I also have something called BLUSHING BLOOPERS. I’m not sure how much I will enjoy that one but it stated it had both STAR TREK and Errol Flynn bloopers and it was only five bucks.

In case of my sudden mysterious death and/or disappearance department: I awoke this morning to a "verrry interresting" email from the Church of $cientology's front group CCHR about my Farmer article (the CCHR owns the site that has the most flagrant disinformation about Farmer out there). They are nicely (at least at this point) requesting "all documentation" behind my article so that they can "update their records." I think not. ;) But if I disappear, you will know that Xenu and his (its?) acolytes are behind it.
Macchus: the Oregonian had a very interesting interview this morning with Jack Klugman's son, who lives in a Portland suburb and has written a play that Jack will be doing. He is also editing Jack's book about Tony Randall.
Laura Nyro department: I love Laura, too. One of my fondest memories from my lounge piano days was one night when a woman had been listening to me quite intently and I asked her if she had any requests. She said, "Well a good friend of mine just died this week. I used to go to summer camp with her and she later became quite famous, but I bet you've never heard of her and don't know any of her songs." Well I knew instantly she was talking about Miss Laura, and told her so, which amazed her, and I then launched into a long medley of lesser-known Nyro masterpieces like "Captain St. Lucifer" and "Blackpatch." The woman was in tears (hopefully in a good way, not because of my playing, LOL). It touched me very deeply.

For the first time 10 years, I have a a tree. It's a pre-light jobby so it took naught but to place it and plug it in.
But it adds something festive to the atmosphere of the jernt.

I love thousands of lights. I also like to decorate a tree. But it seems futile when I'm not really here to enjoy it during the bulk of the holidays.

AOL News' lead story on my computer is the nine prisoner jail break in Yakima, Washington. I hope that is just a local news story and not a national one. How embarrassing. Last Sunday the Tacoma Mall shooting, today the Yakima prison break. I guess we will do anything to keep those Californians from moving to Washington. Next thing you know, we will be telling people that it rains here.

The library where I work just got the book, "Tony and Me (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0976830302/002-7701208-5864855?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance)," but it's not out circulating yet. I placed a request, but I'm the eighth and we only bought three copies. It could take a while, but I can do it. :)

I have not gotten a great deal of DVD watching done yet. I did start the two hour documentary on the making of the 1933 KING KONG, and it's a fascinating (though dense) piece of filmmaking. (They could have skipped reading the script treatment for Willis O'Brien's CREATION, for example), but I am only about halfway through it. Nice information, though, and a variety of talking heads who seem to know what they're talking about.

That may very well be true. Being over 50, I certainly appreciated it. I found it completely enjoyable. I still think BEST IN SHOW is the best of Guest's mockumentaries, but A MIGHTY WIND is truly hilarious as it WAITING FOR GUFFMAN. He hasn't stumbled yet.

TOnight, HBO is showing the remake of FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX. If I haven't finished THE POLAR EXPRESS by then, I'll have the DVR record it.
I read some decent things about it. One positive is that it isn't as long as the James Stewart original from the 1960s. I really enjoyed the original, but it did tend to drag just a bit in spots.

I didn't include Elton John in my list. Bernie Taupin's input is enormous. Love Elton's body of work though.
Of course I should not have included Paul Williams and Sedaka either (I don't think either writes lyrics).
"Guffman" and "Best in Show" are very popular in thsi house too. On the other hand, I don't find much to amuse me in "Spinal Tap". These days it looks more like a documentary than a satire.

Well, since Rob Reiner directed THIS IS SPINAL TAP, I don't lump it with the others, though, of course, Guest plays a very prominent role in it, and as a mockumentary, it is the same genre.
Is it just me or do Guest's three films have a "gayer" feel to them? And I don't mean having gay characters necessarily but just a campier, freer spirit about them?

Well, it looks like my days with Hildy are numbered....I have tried, but there is no longer any denying the fact that I seem to be allergic to her :-\
I really should have not been so hasty in my getting a dog in the first place, but she seemed like such a special pooch...and she is. She is a wonderful, wonderful dog and will make someone the perfect pet...just not me. She gets along great with cats and with dogs and with people...she sheds like crazy, which is the only real drawback, IMO...but from what I am told by dog people, that is not unusual. And I should have remembered that from when I babysat my co-workers German Shephard last year...and of course I had blocked out the fact that I was terribly allergic to that dog, as well.

Six dogs + one Christmas tree = disaster. We tried it once, when we only had five dogs, and it didn't work. Add Fletcher and Peggy to our current combo, and we'd be picking up the tree on an hourly basis! Not the best idea.

I went ahead and headed to Pentagon City Mall last night after rehearsal. Rehearsal ended at 8:30, and I was at the mall by 8:45. Imagine my surprise when I stepped inside and had no major crowds to deal with. Even when I hit the Apple Store, there was no "madness". Apparently, even shopped earlier in the day. -Even some of the clerks at the Apple Store looked a bit surprised that business died down so fast in the evening. Some of them even looked bored. I passed on the one-day only specials, but I did pick up some additional memory (RAM) for my iBook, as well as the OS X Tiger. -And the memory had just come down in price too, so I guess I did get something on "sale" yesterday.

I’m back from the thee’ah-tur on this chilly November day less than 30 days before Christmas.
The bill of fare was “Irving Berlin’s ‘White Christmas’” and what a grand spectacle it all was.
It was tuneful, beautiful, spectacular and a fine tribute to the 1954 Paramount film of the same name.
The set design was unbelievably gorgeous and sets changed so often I cannot imagine the complexity of it all. The changes were noiseless, almost all done in total darkness.
The music was classic Berlin: “Happy Holiday,” “Let Yourself Go,” “Love and the Weather,” “Sisters,” “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing,” “Snow”, “What Do You Do With A General?”, “Let Me Sing and I’m Happy,” “Count Your Blessings,” “Blue Skies,” “I Love A Piano,” “Falling Out of Love Can Be Fun,” “Sisters” (Reprise w/the boys), “Love, You Didn’t Do Right By Me/How Deep Is the Ocean?” (nightclub sequence on a set that totally blew me away!!!), “We’ll Follow the Old Man,” “Let Me Sing and I’m Happy (Reprise), “How Deep is the Ocean” (Reprise), “We’ll Follow the Old Man” (Reprise), “White Christmas”, and for the Finale, “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.”
“Let Yourself Go,” “I Love A Piano” and the "Finale" were full-blown extended ensemble numbers with some of the finest tapping I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. The choreography by Randy Skinner was wonderful.
The costumes were all 50s kitsch...and you’d swear Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen wore nothing snazzier than their counterparts in this show.
The plot is fairly faithful to the film, but the general’s granddaughter Susan is a 9-year-old visiting from California because she’s never seen snow! The general’s housekeeper, Martha, is no Mary Wickes. No, she’s a former showstopper herself and wrangles her way into Phil and Bob’s show all the while eavesdropping and jumping to Wickesian conclusions.
Susan Mansur plays Martha and she’s terrific. A HUGE voice and a heaping helping of charisma explode onstage every time she’s on.
Husband-wife performers Graham Rowat and Kate Baldwin play the Crosby-Clooney roles. Both have big voices. Baldwin really sells “Love You Didn’t Do Right By Me” and Rowat is fine, with a “trained” voice that gets in the way too often for my tastes. (To me, it’s as if he has a certain note he loves to hit and every time he hits it, it's extended and booming, but it’s seldom the note that “ought” to be accentuated. It’s a self-conscious voice, and I hate to say it, but Baldwin indulges in that self-consciousness a few times, too).
Not so the Kaye-Ellen counterparts. THE spectacular male performer in this show is Mark Ledbetter. He’s a hoofer, a singer with a great voice (a great interpretive singer who lets the song be sung) and he exudes more energy than just about anybody except Mansur who has less stage time. Shannon O’Bryan is Judy Haynes and she’s a Vera-Ellen look-alike, physically (from the Loge, at any rate), with a good voice and plenty of hoofing talent.
Ledbetter was front-and-center in both big ensemble numbers and had some good moments with O’Bryan and Howat, as well. To me, he was the standout performer in the company.
I’ve never been fond of the framing for the story...the sappy front-lines stuff and the later “because we love him, we love him...” stuff. Somebody fetch me an insulin sucret!
And the character development is nominal...we “know” these characters from the movie, so we get more songs and dances than we do dialogue (which is a pure-tee blessing since it’s all rooted in 1954 idiom).
The overall production, though, is splendiferous, and director Walter Bobbie has gotten everything to work...and it’s all magic, with the added Finale surprise of snow blowing out onto the audience for a reprise of "White Christmas."
A VERY enjoyable, delightful entertainment!

DR Ron Pulliam - Thanks for the review of White Christmas. A friend of mine is the assistant conductor for the Los Angeles production (which stars the original San Francisco leads from last year), and he was amazed that they were able to rehearse all three companies concurrently in NYC a few weeks ago. -And, yes, there was some "intrigue" involved too. ;)
In any case...
Kate and Graham met while they were both in 1776 at Ford's Theatre here in DC. -I was in the pit for the last part of that run. She played Martha Jefferson, and he was Richard Henry Lee. Good folks. And Kate was also my Nellie Forbush in South Pacific at Arena Stage, as well as the Helen in the concert presentation of The Golden Apple that DR elmore assisted with a few months ago. -Oh, and Kate and Graham got married the day before they started rehearsals for White Christmas. -Now that's a honeymoon! ;)
Who was in the pit? I can't remember if Rob Berman was heading out on the road this time round, or if he was just the Musical Supervisor for the three companies.
...And next year, they are "hoping" to have 10(!) companies of White Christmas playing around the country. That's a lot of "theatre snow"!

I watched IN OLD CHICAGO last night....the 115 minute Road Show version. I hadn't seen it since watching it on the late show MANY MANY years ago. I might watch the 95 minute version to see what's gone... Can't imagine what they took out, unless they shortened some of the musical numbers. Fun movie! Tyrone Power was so very handsome....and his physique made Alice Faye look fat!

My first order of business early this evening was to finish the KING KONG documentary. Included with this is the "Spider Pit Sequence" reconstruction. Interesting in theory and sort of fun but they in no way could match the expertise of the original KONG stuff.

Mel Swope, the show's producer, directed that episode (my first). Great guy. Susan wasn't THAT tall, maybe 5'6 or 7.
The elderly producer of Horror of Party Beach simply didn't realize what he'd been given. He has no idea what is funny or not funny, and he was also trying to get a major to put up the dough, a completely inane and impossible way to go. Had he taken my advice, he would have raised a couple of mil, done it low budget, and filmed EXACTLY what I'd written, he would have had a hit on his hands. Instead, he gave it to "readers" at William Morris, and they, being idiot teenagers, loved the outrageous comedy, but wanted to cut all the character out of the non-comedic characters - do that, and then nothing is funny because the movie has no reality base. Sadly, the elderly gentleman had someone else (presumably an amateur, from what I'm told) do precisely that and now he has, once again, something completely unfilmable. If he had a brain in his head he would go back to my script, raise the dough, hire me to direct it, and my guess is that we'd have a winning picture to shop around.

After KONG, I watched THE POLAR EXPRESS.
I found it delightful, precious, and a ton of fun. At first I wasn't too sure about it, but I became more and more impressed with the film as it unfolded.

Just as the credits were coming up with THE POLAR EXPRESS, I flipped over to watch the remake of FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX on HBO-HD. Very, very similar to the original in spirit and surprises. I think I liked the original actors better than the newer ones, but they all did well with their roles.
After hearing Hugh Laurie speak in that perfect American accent for more than a year on HOUSE, to hear him speak in his actual British accent for two hours was disconcerting!
If you haven't seen the original, this is a good popcorn movie with thrills, surprises, and some melodrama. If you have seen the original, I think you've probably seen the superior version.

No, actually the last time Theatre Charlotte did MY FAIR LADY, I auditioned for Colonel Pickering, and even though I was older than the actor who got cast as Higgins, the director thought I looked younger and wanted an older actor in that part, so I lost out.

After PHOENIX, I settled in with my two favorite comedies on TV: MY NAME IS EARL and THE OFFICE.
EARL had some funny moments as Earl tried to make amends with his father (Beau Bridges) for costing him a mayoral election. Earl's brother Randy has become one of my favorite comedy characters on TV. He is a simpleton personified and very funny.

THE OFFICE had another winner with office worker Jim throwing a barbecue/karaoke party and not inviting boss Michael (who finds out about it anyway). Michael goes to his improv class instead with some hilariously and repetitively bad improv from him.
I've been reading some rumors that NBC may move these two shows to Thursday night at midseason and let SCRUBS and WILL & GRACE form a four comedy block on that night. (JOEY would move to Tuesday). I know those of you who love THE APPRENTICE wouldn't be happy with this, but I'd love to see NBC reestablish a comedy block on Thursday.

After those shows finished, I ACTUALLY and FINALLY started SPANGLISH. I only got about 20 minutes in. Tea Leoni is annoying as all get out (and looks about 15 years older than Adam Sandler who's playing her husband; not that there's anything wrong with that.) Cloris Leachman is playing an alcoholic former singer.
At this point, I don't know where it's all going, but I'll stick with it. I have to say, though, that this doesn't seem to have the instant appeal for me of James Brooks' former hits TERMS OF ENDEARMENT or BROADCAST NEWS.

You know, I just don't remember any "surprises" in the original Flight of the Phoenix. I'm afraid "surprises" are the watchcry of today's TV and film fans. Everything has "surprises" - for me, their not so suprising, but that's what makes horse racing. I am watching the completely insane Godzilla: The Final Wars. I think it's safe to say that in the history of Godzilla films there has never been one as completely wacko as this one. More later, but my mind is boggled, oh, yes, my mind is boggled. I guess there are "surprises" in it, too, in that not one word or image makes any sense.

I'm back from SPAMALOT, which has now replaced THE PRODUCERS as the funniest show on Broadway. Dylan and I went backstage to see Todd Ellison after the show. Hearing the orchestrations in the theatre, I will reiterate that Larry Hochman was robbed of a Tony: his work is stylish, funny, clever, varied and much more brilliant than LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA.
One extra plus: in the finale, when Sara Ramirez threw the wedding bouquet, which turned out to be real flowers, it landed in Dylan's lap. It's now sitting in a glass of water on my table.

Well, I just had two surprises. I just watched two episodes of the old TV series FRONTIER CIRCUS and they were quite enjoyable!
It wasn't really a surprise, but I did enjoy them never-the-less. The first episode had my dear friend Carolyn Kearney as a guest star along with Robert Sampson who I find to be quite a good actor.
The second episode had Glenda Farrell, little Roger Mobley, and an actor that it seems like I see a lot lately on old TV shows, Joby Baker...in fact he was in the movie HOOTENANY HOOT that played on TCm the other night.

Mitch Vogel was the boy in "The Reivers" if that's any help.
And he did some work on "Little House on the Prairie," playing an older student named Johnny Johnson on whom Laura develops a crush. He was a recurring character on "Bonanza" in the early 70s.

Not that I know of. It started last year with a limited run here. It was so successful that talk began that it might be taken to Broadway.
I note now that it's in both LA and San Francisco this holiday season.

They have shots for folks with true allergies to dogs.
I say "true" because I had a series of allergy tests and discovered I have no "true" allergies to anything...just sensitivities (which are worse 'cause they cannot be treated with shots/meds).
So...if you were to be tested and had a positive reaction to animal fur/dander, you could get shots that would allow you to have animals without ill side effects.
Or so I've been told...
