Title: EAR READERS
Post by: bk on November 28, 2005, 12:11:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have prepared you for any and all eventualities, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently reading some ears.

I have always loathed Ebert, and I've equally loathed every one of his partners.  How's that?

I've had a first report on Memoirs of a Geisha and the report isn't good, which is what I've been suspecting.  It will be interesting to see what the critics make of it, but I'm told it's paint-by-numbers filmmaking, very uninvolving, and overscored (like most of today's films), with the music nudging you at ever opportunity, which, of course, has the opposite effect than is intended.   One scene is apparently so poorly directed that you don't know WHAT is going on.

Snacks:  Buttered popcorn is always a favorite movie and reading snack for me.  I also really like Wheat Thins and those Chicken in a Biscuit things, but the latter are really fattening, so I rarely eat them.  I occasionally like beef jerky, beer nuts (again, really fattening, so I don't do them often), cashews, almonds.  I'm not a fruit person, but I sometimes like dried fruits, maybe once every three months or so.  I also like chocolate covered raisins as a snack.  I sometimes get in a cottage cheese mood, and sometimes when I'm doing some late-night watching, I'll rustle up a tortilla with cheese.

Snacks - I like the Bacon & Cheddar Ruffled Chips from MikeSells.  I also like Chiken in a Bisket....popcorn, of course.

NOW however, I eat lovely caramel rice cakes or apples, and my pants fit much better because of it.

Snack foods: Low-fat popcorn

Don't laugh at me for saying this, but we are in the midst of a cold-snap here in Arizona. At 6:30 a.m., it is 41F -- chilly for us here in November, which is usually t-shirt time.

What a busy, busy weekend I've had!  Suffice to say, carpets were steam cleaned, Christmas trees were raised and decorated, leaves were raked, online shopping was done  and WHITE CHRISTMAS was viewed and enjoyed.  All of these tasks and efforts were fueled by a terrific feast on Thanksgiving Day at the House of Sister the Eldest.  Yessiree, Bob (and Nancy), the Christmas season has gotten off to a jam-packed start!

The flip-side to all this is that I picked up a case of the sniffles and sneezies, and last night I started feeling a bit tattered and torn.  I'll be taking Airborne all day today to try to keep this from developing into anything worse.  I can't afford to be sick before Christmas!

Good morning, all!  I slept late this morning, and I have a big work day here at the apartment:
  1.  Holiday concert orchestra parts
  2.  BABES edition notes
  3.  Tax work for my accountant
  4.  Post Office
  5.  Rehearsal with Elaine Stritch this evening

That's plenty, I do believe.  I believe I'll start out by preparing the title pages for the holiday charts, take a break and fret over my editorial preface.  It's good to have some work.

TOD:

If I'm in a movie theatre, I prefer buttered popcorn.  The thing is, it seems that all theatre-popped popcorn these days is air popped.  Much healthier, I'm sure.  But it's dry and somewhat tasteless, no matter how much butter one pumps on it.

At home, I loves potato chips.  Herr's Potato Chips (a brand local to the Pennsylvania area) in particular.  As for snack crackers, I like Chicken in a Basket, Triscuits, and Wheat Thins.  Garlic Butter Ritz crackers are yummy, too.  If I'm feeling ambitious in my snacking, I'll pop a number of crackers in the toaster oven sprinkled with a bit of shredded cheddar and a dash of paprika.

Good Morning!

I'm up... I'm up...

-Still not sure exactly what I'm going to do with my day. There are a few things I do need to get done (bills, mail, banking, etc.); it's just a matter of the order in which I will do them.

But for now, I think just continuing to wake up is the plan.

As for The Topic of The Day...

Popcorn.  But I seem to go in phases with the stuff.  When I'm not eating it, I'm not eating it.  But when that unmistakable aroma from the pot on the stove, the popper and/or the microwave becomes too much to resists, well...  All bets are off.  I'll end up having a bag a day/night for a few days in a row, and that seems to satisfy my popcorn quotient for a while.  And then a couple of weeks later...

*The Orville R. "Smart Pop" microwave popcorn - especially the Kettle Corn variety is particularly good.  However, the best microwave popcorn I've tasted recently is Newman's Own.  Really good stuff.  Worth the extra nickels and dimes at the grocery store.  -And no trans-fats either!

...Otherwise, it's potato chips, pretzels, crackers, various "snack mixes"... basically anything salted and put into a bag.  Oh, and nuts!  Especially almonds, cashews and those assorted mixes - especially the ones without peanuts, but with pistachios in the mix.

Last night I viewed the 225th Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation, SILVER BELLS.  Feh!  What an awful holiday movie.  One of these years I must write my telepic--A YEAR WITHOUT CHRISTMAS COOKIES.  It will be the tale of a bitter, lonely old man who, because he burns his fingertips in a Thanksgiving frozen pizza mishap, is unable to make his customary batch of cut-and-bake Christmas cookies.  And then for some reason or other, he is forced to take in borders to make ends meet.  Among his borders is a young Hispanic girl who is hiding a secret, a ten year old black boy who wants to be an artist, and a middle-aged widow who carries a heavy burden.  Together, these people form a new kind of family that discovers the true meaning of Christmas cookies. This will be a heartwarming and inspiration story that the whole family will enjoy.

At the movies, I eat nothing. It distracts me from the movie. I got in that habit when I was reviewing films because I did take notes and could not juggle a note pad, pen, and food.
Title: Re:EAR READERS

At home, I try to resist eating anything during a movie because unless you measure out the amount you're going to eat in a bowl or cup or something, you lose track of what you're snacking and end up eating too much.

If I am going to eat chips, I take a small salad bowl and put some chips in it. I have to do this because, of course, if I let myself, I'd eat the entire bag at one sitting. My favorite lately has been Lay's Wavy Hickory Barbecue chips.

I read in the newspaper yesterday that unsalted nuts (particularly almonds) are healthier and better for you than either chips or candy as a snack. I like nuts, chips, AND candy!  :D

On the subject of Ebert and Roeper, first off, I loathe Roeper. His worth as a film critic is negligible.

As for Ebert, I found his early writing interesting and informed. He loved film and was able to write about it intensely. But by the time he became a "star reviewer" on TV, particularly after he and Siskel left PBS for their own syndicated show, he seemed to lose his edge and his standards just went into the toilet. Since his brain operation, he doesn't seem to have many critical standards at all any more. He seems to like almost everything studio produced. I'd hate to say he's sold out to the big studios, but that's what it seems like.

Siskel was a political reporter who was assigned to the movie beat when the Chicago Tribute lost their first string critic. He never had any opinion that I felt was worthy of a second glance. (I remember he panned SLEEPING BEAUTY saying the animation was flat and uninspired. See? Worthless.)

Good morn, one and all.

I don't want to be at work, either, Ginny. Unfortunately, Monday is NEVER my day off. ;P

TOD: DRs Jose, Ben and his DP Ant will attest to my affection for Sour Patch Kids. They are my official movie snack food. And Cherry Coke. If it ain't Cherry and out of a fountain, I don't want anything to drink at the movies. I'm sure DR Sandra can appreciate that. :)

I love a good handful of popcorn, but that's about it. I'm not a big fan of salt, and most popcorn tends to be salty, so that leaves me out. I do love me some caramel corn, though. And caramel corn with chocolate chunks a la Dale and Thomas' Popcorn on 48th Street. YUM!

I re-watched "Alexander" (theatrical version) yesterday.

I found it even more engrossing right up to the same point I stopped watching the first time I watched it.

Something about the scene in India where everyone seems to turn against him because they've been away from home 10 years and have some silly notion that they've more-than-completed the initial stated objective of the campaign -- and want to see their families -- brings things to a complete stop for me.

Don't know if it's psychological or....

I find myself skipping over the entire battle with Indians on elephants and the trek back to Babylon before I can settle into the film again.

It's a far superior film, to my mind, than such fodder as "Heaven's Gate"...or even "Troy".  Heck!  I'll state for the record I'd rather watch this one again than to ever waste another second watching "Gandhi" or "The Last Emperor."

It's also missing some key moments in Alexander's life, one of which was his burning of the Persian palace at Persepolis...which he later regretted enormously, according to historians.  It was alleged it was far more splendid than anything in Babylon.

I don't think we've ever mentioned this before here, but I felt exactly the same way about ALEXANDER, DR Ron. That Indian battle just left me cold, and I've skipped it every other time I've seen the film.

But I find a lot to like in the film and have no trouble following its disjointed continuity.
Title: Re:EAR READERS

Regarding films:  I've never known anyone whose judgment was totally reliable concerning how I might react to a film.

I've accepted many such judgments in my life and found myself stunned that my reaction was so different from theirs.  This goes both ways...films that are recommended that I find loathsome, and films that I am warned against which I find to be totally engaging and entertaining.

An awful lot depends on one's mood/mindset/mental state at the time of viewing...and this affects critics and friends and whoever else one might get an opinion from.

If the premise intrigues me, or the cast is attractive in some sense, than I will probably give a film a try.

Of course, sometimes there are films that are so bad that it's impossible for anyone to overstate their badness.

I usually see those in stores...and find myself wondering why I'd never heard of this film with THAT cast...and then it's clear.  No one dared release it to a theater and...life's too short to watch something that obviously not worth my time.

A big yes to Michael Learned and 50 Cent.  Sally Struthers, too, but can she play Hispanic?  Carroll O'Conner could have done the part of the bitter old man say ten years ago, but he would have difficulty with it now.  I was thinking more along the lines of Edward Asner.

As a general rule, I don't read other film critics to validate my own feelings. I'm secure enough in myself to know what I liked and didn't like about something. But it IS interesting to read other points of view IF those viewpoints are supported by knowledge of movie history and an ability to express one's feelings specifically about the work at hand.

I do think it's helpful to find a critic who sees films in a similar way to myself (no one is ever going to agree 100% of the time) when I'm on the fence about whether to spend hard earned money going to a theater. And I'll read quite a lot of critical commentaries before I make a decision about MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, for example.

Re: last night's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.

SPOILERS

.

.

I really liked last night's show.  My favorite storyline was Bree's.  I really liked it.  Hopefully we will be rid of George.  What an ending!  My second favorite was Gabrielle. I think the storyline with the nun will be quite entertaining. And it's very funny to see Carlos religious.  And next week's preview said the nun wants him to go to Botswana to do charitable work! My third favorite story was Lynette. This was good, but not nearly as good as the others.  And I agree with DR MattH, the Susan storyline did nothing for me.  Also, again another episode without Alfre and son.  And I must say, I seem to prefer these episodes.

I am very curious to see what will happen with Bree.  I happen to catch Roger Bart (George) on GMA this morning. And they were asking him if he was gone, if Bree would be blamed ...  Very interesting.

Someone handed me a UPS "InfoNotice" about 30 minutes ago.

It informed me that UPS  attempted to deliver 4 packages on Wednesday and that a second and final attempt would be made on Friday.

WRONG!

First, three of the packages were not shipped UNTIL Wednesday.  One package DUE for delivery on Wednesday was NOT delivered.

A phone call revealed the attempt was made on Friday, Nov. 25 (not Nov. 26) and that a second attempt would be made today (not last Friday).  Would I be available to accept delivery?

SPOILER .... or

POTENTIAL SPOILER....

I concur wholeheartedly with the positive assessments of last night's "Desperate Housewives."  The Bree-George story line did take an interesting turn.  Oddly, I found George's singing voice rather pleasant!  I wanted to hear the whole medley whether Bree did or not.

I think the writers were wise not to cram too much into this story line....sustaining too many threads doesn't work as well in only a one-hour time slot.  Perhaps the Alfre Woodard story line will take an interesting twist in the future.  Her considerable talents have certainly been well wasted, thus far.

I was glad to see a Susan story line free of Mike, her daughter and her mother.  She remains my favorite "housewife" on the show, but only the writers can bring her to vivid life.  This season, they've not done much for her.

I really loved the scene with all the wives playing cards and Edie stating what needed to be said about Susan's plan to get to know her father.

I find myself not-too-crazy-for the Gabrielle-Carlos twist.  She ought to take the money and run.  She has control of it and now it looks like he's planning on giving it all away.  There's a huge hole in this plot right now.

I have to say that The Applewhite storyline has never interested me once we knew who was in the basement, so I don't miss the family at all when they're not present.

Bree's story is my favorite right now followed by Gabrielle's (now that the new complication has been introduced.)

Fun and interesting storytelling.

Last night's "Grey's Anatomy" was another jewel among a multitude of jewels strewn before us in this wonderful TV show.

The ensemble works beautifully.  The chemistry is right on so many levels and the stories...of the interns, of their quests to learn, , and their successes, and of their fumbles at both practicing medicing and controlling their personal lives...are totally engrossing and entertaining.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!

We can't keep nuker popcorn in the house any more.  Flecher has figured out how to open the pantry door, and then he loves to reach up and grab a bag.  He then tears off the celophane, opens the bag, and eats the popcorn.

This would make more sense, I suppose, if he knew how to work the microwave, but he eats the stuff raw.

For myself, I just finished a batch of quesadillas.  Layers of corn tortillas and cheese, plus some hot sauce between layers.  Yummers.

I've been known to fry up some tortillas for fresh chips, for when I'm on the computer.

Normally, we don't snack while watching TV.  That's more likely to be when I'm serving dinner.

And I'm not big on snacking when I'm reading.

I know, I know.  I just don't like doctors, and I don't like doctor's offices.

Marty was the one who decided to wake me up this morning.  He lay on top of me and washed my face.  He's got a tongue like sandpaper; I'm amazed he didn't scrub my beard off.

Then Buster got a little jealous, and joined in the licking.  Marty took from my nose on down, Buster concentrated on my forehead.  He also washed Marty's face a little, I think.  After a few minutes of this, Mikey came in and started to bark at us.  He wanted breakfast.

It's a routine they have, with a changing roster of facewashers and Mikey as the constant, playing at being an alarm clock.

Good Afternoon!

Bill paying - Done!  (Ugh! - My bank account is like Grand Hotel - money comes, money goes... and goes... and goes...)  :-\

Hair cut - Done! -I was still sort of waking up when I was getting my hair cut.  Nothing bad happened, but I somehow agreed to having my the hairline framing my forehead "shaped", consequently, my widow's peak was  trimmed off.  It's OK - it'll grow back in a few days - but it does like a little "different" than usual.

Post office - Done!  Actually, it took me a couple of attempts to drop off my mail.  I did go to check my PO Box, but I forgot to drop off my outgoing mail.  Then I meant to drop it off on the way to getting my hair cut, but I forgot then too.  Then I meant to drop it off after getting my hair cut, but I forgot yet again.  So, as I was pulling into the driveway, and reached into my jacket and noticed the stamped envelopes... Well, I turned right around and headed back to the post office.  Whew!

And now I've just finished playing host to some relatives who just happened to drop in for the afternoon.  My Dad gave them the key the last time they were here.  ??  In any case, they live in Bel Air, MD, which is not that far away from here, but due to a cement mixer which overturned on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway, and, consequently, closed off all traffic on both sides of the Beltway at Tysons Corner - a.k.a. one of the busiest interchanges around the Beltway...  Well... they were supposed to be here two hour ago... Ah, well... They're here now.

They were going to head out to get some Chinese food, but I "reminded" them that there were lots of leftovers in both fridges - fried fish, barbecued ribs, boiled crabs, baked ham, etc...  And my mom had started a fresh batch of rice in the rice cooker this morning - ?? So... A veritable feast.  -And they're eating all the food that I'm not inclined to eat right now.

-And there's also a cute baby with them, and she seems to have taken a liking to me.

Now if I can just learn their names.

However, what happened near the end of the movie with all the damage running along the right side of the screen! Holy moly! A beautiful DVD experience ruined momentarily by someone scaping emulsion off the film!

That was VERY aggressive stereo surround in the music on the DVD.

Oddly because I've never heard of the man before this show and I've no reason to expect him to be able to sing.  And even if I had known he was a singer, I'd not have expected that voice...

He also won a Tony Award® for his performance as Snoopy in the 1999 revival/revisal of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, that also gave Kristin Chenoweth her Tony Award® for her performance as Sally!

And earlier than that, when the national tour of The Secret Garden came to Seattle, Roger played Dickon and Audra (Ann) McDonald played the Ayah and Amanda Naughton (from "Remember WENN") played Martha!

DR JRand55, I never noticed that line in King Kong, but now it has my laughing my head off and I don't even know why?!! LOL!

I might go and get the King Kong set tonight after work, and the LEAVE IT TO BEAVER season 1.

I just got the new 4-DVD set which includes MIGHTY JOE YOUNG and THE SON OF KONG.  Lord knows when I'll find the time to watch them.

I'm off now to 14th Street and tonight's rehearsal.  Back later.

I wonder if they will use that great radio news report in the new KING KONG.

"Kong is climbing the Empire State Building.  That is all."

I love that!  And it's strange that he is called Kong by everybody....although Carl Denham says: "He was a king in his own world...."  And then he has his name up in lights and KING KONG....but he is really just KONG!

In Seattle, the NBC affiliate is King TV (on channel 5).  They have a sister station called Kong (on channel 6)!  Someone has a sense of humor:  TV stations named King and Kong!

And an autographed ST item from Mr S. himself?  That settles it, Mr BK.  Surely they have your measurements at Armani Wells - and when you look at the photos as the years go by - CALL THEM UP and ask them to set aside a tuxedo shirt, studs, tie, and the whole bit.  YOU MUST BE DRESSED TO THE NINES AND THE TEETH AND TIP TO TOE for Saturday evening.  You must dazzle and bedazzle!  Call Armani Wells - they will be GLAD to sell you something!

They are color scenes from the film...not posed.  I know they did the best they could to shoot Clift from various angles that disguised his disfigurements.

I've detected nothing in any of the stills that betray those efforts.

Der Brucer and I saw Bart in a show he did earlier than YAGMCB.  He was in Triumph of Love on Broadway, along with such unknowns as Susan Egan, Kevin Chamberlin, Nancy Opel, Christopher Seiber, Betty Buckley, and the most fabulous singer you'll ever hear, F. Murray Abraham.

Yet another show that didn't really work on Broadway, but works very well in regional theater, IMO.

In another Bart/Egan pairing, he did the singing for young Hercules and Susan sang/voiced Meg in the Disney animated film a few years back.

Marty was very good at the vets.  He didn't try to chase any of the resident cats, including Tripod (whose name is quite obvious when you meet him).  He was very quiet when we put him on the doctor's table, which he normally cannot stand, and didn't whimper even once when the doctor inspected his paw.

Basically, he was given a cortizone shot and a regimen of pills for the next ten days, to make sure any infection doesn't spread.  This means he gets to have a special treat of Fig Newtons, our favorite means of hiding the pills.

Hopefully, he'll be all better within a week.

I have this CD.  A local community theater did this show, and it was very good.  Their theater (a black box, really) only holds about 140 people or so, so the intimacy really helped.  I can't imagine seeing that show in a large Broadway theater.

Well, I settled in with BABY TAKE A BOW tonight. The film looks much grainier than REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM looked, but other than that, the print used was in good shape.

This has never been one of my favorite Temple films, and I still question why one of her better ones like CAPTAIN JANUARY or POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL or STOWAWAY or THE LITTLE COLONEL wasn't chosen instead.

And will we ever get THE BLUE BIRD? With proper mastering, it could look spectacular.

I had about 30 minutes between the end of the Shirley Temple film and the start of my selected TV viewing, so I put in '1776' to watch just the musical numbers.

I thought the Dolby 5.1 sound was not on the mark for "Sit Down, John." You could hear William Daniels' vocals clearly enough but the background ensemble was too quiet in the surrounds and gave them a remote sound that was very disconcerting. I can't believe I didn't hear this the first time I ever watched the DVD. I'll have to run the laserdisc to see if that's the way things come out in the speakers on that disc. I honestly don't think so.

The other numbers I watched and listened to through "He Plays the Violin" all sounded just fine. I left it in the player. I may start the movie there tomorrow and just watch the rest of it.

Back from a very nice dinner with my friend, Andy.  And then we headed downtown to walk around Dupont Circle for a while.  Nice evening for a walk.  We did stop into JR's, but no one was there - apparently, even on Monday nights, the "festivities" don't really start up until around 10:00.   So...  We just headed back to Virginia around 9:30.  It was still a nice evening, and it was very good to get out of the house for a while.
