Title: BANG
Post by: bk on November 29, 2005, 12:06:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes gave you more bang for your buck, and your buck gave you more buck for your bang, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to get more bang for their buck, too.  But that's just because they need the MOOlah.

We don't allow groaning here at haineshisway.com

Assuming that we could be the appropriate age (or "type") for the character, even if we're not really that age any more...or yet, I'd love to play Georges/George in Sunday in the Park With George, and not just because of the name. ;)  This was the first Broadway musical that I had ever seen (even if it was on TV) and I just fell in love with it from the very first time I watched it.  I didn't "get" everything at first, but I really responded to the music and the performers.

And as far as theatrical shows were concerned, it was so different from just about everything that I had seen up to that point.  It wasn't Oklahoma! or Joseph and the Technicolor® Dreamcoat , The Boy Friend or even Follies.  I've always wanted to be part of a production (any production) but no one in Olympia has ever done it.  Maybe someday, but playing the lead is beyond my reach.  Even when I was anywhere near the right age, I was never a good enough actor or singer to play the role.  But I'd still love to play any part in it. ;D

I would like to play Sydney in Deathtrap. A fun mystery and you can play Syndey at many different levels. I saw Stacy Keach do it on Broadway and saw a Brit actor(whose name escapes me at the moment) on tour and they played it in their own way.

Good morning, all!  I work at home on the editorial notes for a while, then go to the Met for the dress rehearsal of the new opera AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY.  My friend Bill Burden is playing one of the leads.  I hope I'll see his beautiful wife Carol there.

Dear Friend BK, I think the musical theatre workshop is fantastic news!  I haven't been so excited about a class since I thought DRSWW was teaching one on cooking.  I think you're perfect for it.

Finally!

From the looks of things (the paucity of posts), a lot of people have had difficulties logging on this morning.

I've been trying for about 40 minutes, and this is the first success I've had.

Must be that midwest storm...blame it on the storm!!!

I didn't get a chance to watch any of my DVDs last evening.

I attempted, with a great deal of success (IISSM, "If I say so myself" in Internet Lingo), to replicate the lunch dish I had last Wednesday....the Italian sausage, arugula, asparagus, mushrooms, & cherry tomatoes sauteed in garlic olive oil and served over orzo.

I had everything but the arugula...but it tasted GREAT!

The rest of the evening was devoured by a phone call from a friend in Beverly Hills, NBC's "Surface" and "Medium"...plus I finished all my Christmas cards.

And I mailed said cards this morning!

Ain't I a stinker!

Blame it on the storm and not on Jose!

We started with a very warm but drizzly morning, but the skies are starting to clear now and looks like the day will turn out nice. Going to get colder, however. It's 66 right now!

Oof!  I forgot about my Deep Discount orders.

There's a batch arriving sometime in the next week (I hope) with seasons 2-5 of "Angel," seasons 9 & 10 of "Friends, and an assortment (3-5 more DVD titles) of odds and ends that caught my eye as I was perusing the listings.

But I swear to you all!  I'm done!  At least, I "hope" I'm done.  I do have some pre-orders in for season 2 of "Lois and Clark" and season 3 of "Mary Tyler Moore Show"...plus "March of the Penguins"...

..and danged if I didn't forget the new batch of Disney tin box titles...those should be arriving in a week or two.

Sigh.

There are three roles in musical theater that I've always wanted to play and as yet have not been able to:

1. ensemble/Groucho in A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE.

2. Albert Peterson in BYE BYE BIRDIE

3. Michael in I DO! I DO!

But A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE would be the best showcase. I sing, I tap dance, I play the piano and clarinet, all of which are utilized in the show.

That's funny, DR Matt--I was going to mention the very same two roles in my list.

I should note that, for the most part, I would never cast someone as myself in the majority of the roles I listed.  Either the wrong physicality or just plain old lacking the skills and endurance for most of them.  This is definitely a dream list.

Re: last night's MEDIUM.

SPOILERS.

I know some of you have not been fond of her kids.  But I just love them.  I think those are my favorite scenes.  The way the middle child talks always makes me smile.  And last night's visions (oldest child) were some of my favorite/and most interesting parts of the show.

I wasn't too crazy with the final result (what the wife did to her husband). That didn't satisfy me at all (even though he was creepy I thought what she did was really horrible).

But another good episode.

I played a couple of roles I really like already, both Neil Simon:

Felix in THE ODD COUPLE
Mel in PRISONER OF SECOND AVENUE

And I have also done Hysterium in A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

I would do them all again!!!

I would like to play the father in THE HEIRESS/WASHINGTON SQUARE.  And I would like to play Cosmo in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN or Phil in WHITE CHRISTMAS....so I could do those DANCES!!!

What's this hoary old tale about some kind of class?  Yes, I think a musical theatre class taught by Professor Bisque would be invaluable!

And what's this about doing a play at The House of Pies?

MEDIUM spoiler - - - -

DR Jennifer, what that husband was was more than creepy. He was a CREEP! a MURDERER! and worst of all, he dishonored his wife's name when HE was the guilty party. He looked on it as his WIFE's fault that he was drunk because it was her birthday.

What kind of chauvanistic, lop-sided thinking is that? HE GOT WHAT HE DESERVED. I found the ending VERY satisfying.

Back from my adventures in Aventura, Florida.  (Actually my folks live in Miami Beach but we stayed at a hotel in Aventura.) Now that's what I call a mall, and the treacherous battles I witnessed for parking at the mall made for some exciting moments, full of drama and tension, some of which had to be broken up by the security folks who ride around on bicycles especially to handle such conflicts.

Nothing my parents had described prepared me for how close they were to the hurricane damage down there.  The people in charge of the clean-up were in the process of clearing away the downed trees, and one monster of a tree had fallen within feet of my parents' terrace.  Walking out onto their terrace and the great fallen oak being practically within reach was a frightening sight, but as I've mentioned the only damage they sustained to their physical property itself was the screen on the terrace being bashed in.   I hesitate to call them lucky in such an instance - if they were indeed "lucky" in the purest sense of the word, they wouldn't have been in Florida during the hurricane itself - but clearly, they were very close to the situation having been dangerous for them.  But no one in their complex was actually hurt, despite the many downed trees.

Doesn't anyone else find it odd when they air a show and the DVD comes out a week later?

It's happening with Once Upon A Mattress, too - but it only happens on RARE, RARE occasions.  It completely precludes the show involved from having any sort of rerun life, so it makes you wonder what the network is thinking or if they simply feel that they'll get some Christmas bucks.  But, if it's some huge movie that they are throwing a lot of money and promotion at, then the DVD tends to come out in a regular time frame - three to six months later, so that they get their reruns out of the show.

DR Jason has reminded me of another role I would like:  Voltaire/Pangloss/etc in CANDIDE.

I read in the paper last night about a high school in Cherry Hill NJ that is putting on ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. They are doing it with two different casts:  on is the show as it is traditionally played, and the other in which the characters' genders are switched.  Dale Wasserman actually gave the school's drama teacher permission to do such a production and was open to help out with any questions the teacher and his cast had.  This was a nice change of pace from the story of the high school that was doing GREASE that was closed down by Samuel French  just because the show was cast with all girls (who played the male roles as males.)

I just realized that my post on TOD never made it.  Fortunately, I happen to save it in wordpad.

TOD:

Without a doubt, my favorite musical role would be Sweeney Todd.  He gets some of the best numbers Sondheim has ever written and has a mad scene, to boot.  There are a number of things I would like to try in the part that I have yet to see any other performer do.

Other roles would be Max Bialystock, The Leading Player in PIPPIN, Pseudolus, Prof. Harold Hill, John Adams, Ben Stone, Oscar Jaffee, The Baker from INTO THE WOODS, Chuck Baxter, Phineus T. Barnum, Ozzie in ON THE TOWN, and Edna Turnblad.

As for plays, Kenneth Talley in FIFTH OF JULY, Randle P. McMurphy, Elwood P. Dowd, Salieri in AMADEUS, Big Daddy, Hickey in THE ICEMAN COMMETH, Oscar Madison or Felix Unger, and, of course, Hamlet.

Help!

In the new CC Video catalog, there is a NEW letter added to the description.  Some of the videos have an "a" after the screen ratio numbers:

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit  [DVD: 2.35:1a/Surround/....]  Does this stand for "aspect ratio?"

The CC & DDD customer service operators used to get confused sometimes and answer with the "other" company's name from time to time.  :)  One of them finally confessed to me one day.  Notice that their shipping labels and invoices are absolutely identical with the exception of the company name and logo.

SPOILERS FROM LAST NIGHT'S MEDIUM.

Yes he was a creep.  I don't know if I would call him a murderer since it was an accident when he ran over the girl. And he did not shoot his wife (although he did not call 911 either).  I don't know if he thought it was his wife's fault that he was drunk that night.  But he definitely wanted to shut her up about what she knew.

Allison looked quite unhappy when she realized what the wife did.  I would be curious to know if others were satisfied with the ending. Perhaps it depends on whether you think people should go to jail for their crimes vs the death penalty.  But I really thought that it made the wife seem like a vindictive witch.

Tonight looks like one of those rare nights for me when there is too much to choose from, TV-wise.  Of course, there is TAR (which has some kind of "surprise ending" tonight.)  I will be Tivo-ing DR Panni's FELICITY:  AN AMERICAN GIRL ADVENTURE.  But there is also MIN AND BILL on TCM which I haven't seen in years, a doc on holistic healing and Rick Steves' Christmas in Europe on PBS and Barbara Walters' Ten Most Fascinating People.  I might have to rewire the VCR so I can record on that, as well.

Jeeze, when it rains, it pours!

For me, the only thing that I usually watch on Tuesdays is "Commander and Chief."  I do want to watch the Barbara Walters special, though.

Barbara's "interviews" are so scripted and heavily edited that they are more irritating to me than anything else.  And her subjects are so obviously geared for ratings that the idea that SHE would choose 10 of the most Interesting People of the year is ludicrous.

Television journalists are a strange bunch who care more about what their fellow journalists think of them than what they are showing the public.  I think they might be more than a bit distressed that a LOT of us think their "reporting" and "exclusives" and "stories" are mostly jokes, as are they.

Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, John Daly, Nancy Dickerson & Pauline Frederick....these were reporters and news people.   There were others, of course.  But this new crop of made-up and coiffed news readers are NOT journalists.

I just mailed off the biggest 30lb box up north!  And I would like to say that the post office people that work at the Bureau en Gros post office i go to are so nice.  For some reason if these boxes are 1cm more in any direction, it could end up costing $100 more.  So i had measured the box very carefully and knew this.  Well the woman who measured my box was 1cm different in one direction ($100 more). And i told her this, so she changed it.  The box still cost $71 plus taxes, and insurance and fuel surcharge ($86 total). But is all the kids christmas presents, plus my presents to them, plus my sister's presents to them). So when we split this 3 ways it should be fine.

No offense, DRD-t-M, but since GREASE is, to my knowledge, a Samuel French show, I can't see how Tams-Witmark gave a damn if it were cast with orangutans!

I'm back from the Met and from picking up more Mario Frangoulis charts!  The dress of AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY was interesting, and I liked about half the score.  I think Francesca Zambello is a good stage director but a lousy dramaturg, and I hated her first collaboration with the composer, EMMELINE, which PBS broadcast and which I saw at City Opera.  The handsome baritone Nathan Gunn is wonderful in the leading role of Clyde Griffiths (the Montgomery Clift role has a different namein A PLACE IN THE SUN), and the two ladies are nicely parted as well.

A friend of mine in college wanted to write a musical version, IN A ROWBOAT WITH YOU, and yes, DRJRand55, the rowboat scene was included in a very strange set by Adrianne Lobel.

Technically speaking, Sam French shouldn't have cared how GREASE! was cast, either. Unless forbidden by the author(s) or their estate(s), theatre groups are welcome to cast females in male roles (and vice-versa) so long as the characters are played as written in the script with no change to the author's original intent. In other words, where the script says "he," it has to remain, "he," etc. And, obviously, the casting of a female in a male role must be necessitated by a lack of talented men who could play the role. In addition, the casting of men in women's roles and women in men's cannot turn into a drag show or tongue-in-cheek "bit" - the roles must be played legitimately. Otherwise, I suspect the cease & desist of GREASE! is most likely a high school urban legend.

Of course, I have heard nightmarish tales of Samuel French and our friends at Tams-Bitchmark...erm...Witmark. Many of our customers refuse to work with them.  :-\ There again, if you talk to a few of OUR customers, you might here some tales, too... None about me, of course, but tales nonetheless. ;)

DRJason, I have worked for Tams-Witmark on HIGH SOCIETY and GOOD NEW and worked with their cooperation on THE GOLDEN APPLE, several Kern shows, FIFTY MILLION FRENCHMEN, and BABES IN TOYLAND.  I'm sorry your customers have complaints, but I have always found the Aborn family of Tams-Witmark friendly, co-operative, and very honorable.  I can say the same about my relationships with MTI and Rodgers & Hammerstein.  Most customers don't like paying what they consider high fees and getting negative answers to their inquiries; I can understand their frustrations, but sometimes the answer is no, you cannot rewrite ther book to CAMELOT or no, you cannot have the Broadway orchestrations to the revival of ONCE UPON A MATTRESS.   Since I have worked with all the major leasing houses in the City except Samuel French, I have to say I suspect your complaining customers say the same things about MTI to the other rental companies.  Of course, I cannot prove it but I can speculate.

In this case Samuel French was pressured by an unhappy author to threaten the production.  Considering the large income French makes on this show each year, it's smarter to fight for the author than to have an unhappy one yank the property and take it elsewhere.

DR Elmore: I'm sure they have many of the same complaints with all of the licensing houses. They hate so-and-so for not giving them the rights to such-and-such (when in reality, the customer either waited too late or there's a tour that's restricting the show) or so-and-so charges how much for six weeks of additional rental?!?! Unfortunately, the majority of the complaints I've heard about Tams (and this is purely based on what my customers have told me) are customer service complaints. Many of them complain that the customer service reps at Tams are rude. I don't know, though - I've never worked with them directly. It's all hearsay from the crazy people that call me when they want to do LES MISERABLES and RENT.

Then, I watched MADAGASCAR. Clever animation, funny character voices, and a group of four penquins that absolutely steal the show (think Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough in THE GREAT ESCAPE).

I don't know what Dreamworks Animation would do if they couldn't draw on allusions to classic and not-so classic movies and television. I lost count of the paeans to classic films all over the film in both dialogue, music cues, and visuals that flash by one's eyes. They're funny, but they constitute too much of the adult-oriented humor that the film contains. Pixar's writers have it all over these guys in turning out truly humorous and original scripts.

Yesterday, I recorded off TCM THE LADY IN THE LAKE, a Philip Marlowe picture starring Robert Montgomery as Marlowe told from the first person point of view. We only see Montgomery in mirrors and other reflections and otherwise only see what he sees through his eyes.

An unusual experiment that I don't think was wildly successful, but the mystery itself is OK. I remember when I saw it the first time, I didn't guess the murderer's identity. This time, I'm dubbing it onto a DVD for my mystery collection.

Sounds to me like the GREASE! thing was a fairly high-profile to-do if they were advertising around Philly with print ads and such. Philadelphia's a big market and, as DR Elmore pointed out, Sam French had the authors breathing down their neck about it. It's the licensing house's job to protect the intellectual property of an author, so if the author says "make them change it or shut it down," that's what we have to do as long as there's a legitimate reason for doing so.

The group in question didn't cast the show as an all-women's show because they couldn't find men who could play the roles - they were doing it to change it up...to set it up as an all-girl's school performing GREASE! In the world of intellectual property, they re-conceived the show. That was not the authors' original intent or vision, so the authors  wanted it changed or closed down. Similarly, the Bernstein estate has been very specific about WEST SIDE STORY - it is not to be played in a modern day setting, nor is it to be presented in concert. We also have very specific guidelines concerning song order for that show - you cannot rearrange the stage production to reflect what is presented in the film.

One can say the lines and sing the songs word for word, but there is a big grey area called "intent," and ultimately the author - the creator of the material - should have final say in how it is presented.

As to refunds and such for productions that have been C&D'ed - I dunno how that works. I personally have never handled a cease and desist - our lawyer would handle all of that stuff.

And just to cover my butt (in case anyone from any of the licensing houses reads this), I am speaking solely on my own behalf. I do not claim to be an official rep for my company or any other and I acknowledge that my views on these matters comes from my point of view. I don't know everything about the business - certainly not the legal aspect of it - but I am marginally able to speak about these things in generic terms. Does that exonerate me? ;)

DRJason, you're exonerated in my book!  I appreciated your insight here about "intent."  Rodgers & Hammerstein stopped an OKLAHOMA! several years ago in Atlanta, I believe, because the theatre's "intentions" had more to do with the director's reshaping OKLAHOMA into something the authors had never intended.  It's a murky area.

"Intent" is a very murky area, and we haven't even gotten into discussing "parody!" Sometimes I don't fully understand it, in fact, but I'm just a customer rep - I don't really have to deal with the legalities of it all. I find the entire subject of licensing shows pretty fascinating actually. I know your job is tedious, DR Jason, but I think that it's SO great foir shows to be able to live on ad infinitum after their Broadway and road tours are completed.

JMK, if you're still on and happen to read this, I remember a couple of weeks ago you were hit by AOL with the charge of sending out unsolicited bulk e-mail and they froze your account. You called and spoke at length to someone at AOL. Did they ever give you a definite number as to what constitutes sending unsolicited bulk e-mail (I doubt that they would share that number with anyone)?

We had the same thing happen today. Anthony sent out an e-mail with many, many addresses and as soon as it went through he was kicked off the system and when I tried to log back on we got that message about violating TOS (terms of service). I was able to get back into the account without much hassel but I'm still furious because two weeks ago Anthony sent out another large e-mail to perhaps not as many e-mail addresses but enough that it was similar in size.

I know it's not worth my energy to despise a company but sometimes I just want to shout from the rooftops how much I loathe AOL.

If you haven't figured it out yet, we are back from a lovely holiday on Long Island. I have read all the notes and a few days worth of posts but have much catching up to do so I won't be posting much in the next day or two till I figure out what you're all talking about.

Although I will say Vibes to anyone who needs them and it's good to be back. I have to post news about Anthony's Volkswagen commercial and where you will be able to see it on-line. I will do that tomorrow.

In Seattle quite a few years ago, I saw the Alice B. Theater production of Company, where April and Kathy were played by men (as men) and one of the couples was made into a gay couple and another became lesbians.  There was an article from a Seattle paper posted on the wall of the theater lobby telling of how Sondheim himself had heard about the "reimagining" of the show and wanted to stop it, but since the company was so close to opening when the cease and desist came through, they were allowed to perform the show.  I thought that it was a wonderful production.

There was also a review posted that said that this was what Company was all about!  That Bobby WAS gay!  But even after seeing the show, I never got that impression.  It was the original script (before the Broadway revisal) and their production was about Bobby realizing that he wanted someone, but not specifically a man.  The person who wrote the review got it wrong.  I saw a matinee and I almost stayed for the evening performance.  As I was driving home, I was sorry that I didn't stay.  It really was very good and I was sorry to hear that Alice B. Theater closed for good. :(

Hello! I am posting from home!  Vixdad fixed the modem problem last night but I didn't know about it til now.

Thank you all for the vibes and prayers and thoughts.  They are very much appreciated and they seemd to have worked.,

Although the angigram did show one artery not functioning at 100% the DR said it was too small to risk  'stenting' and was better left to its own devices for now, the rest seemed clear and  he is resting (somewhat uncomfortably) here at home - much to the relief of his loving wife and daughter.

I will sign off as we have lots of phone calls to make and this is a dial up service... I may check in later if not, see you tomorrow.

And don"t forget to watch  Fekllicity on  "The WB" at 8, 7 Central time! Let's get former DR Panni's ratings up.

Oh and Congratulatins BK on the musical theatre gig it sounds wonderful!!! I am jealous  of those kids lucky enough to get the benefit of being taught by someone who really has real life experience and knowledge what the business is like, and not just someone with "book learnin'" teaching them....

oh and TOD (assuming this is a fantasy world that I am the right age, the right look and actually have the talent to pull off the role)

Lady MacBeth
Kate in Taming of the Shrew
Mame
Maria in the Sound of Music
Maria in West Side Story

and just for a change of sex....

Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof
Georges in La Cage Aux Folles

Good all and love to everybody!!

Well, DRGeorge, I have to say I'd want it stopped, too.  Often, by the time the authors discover what some creative genius has done to his piece, it's too late to do anything.  I'm glad you enjoyed the production, but Steve and Mr Furth have had at least two chances to rethink couples as gay or whatever and to reassess Bobby's sexual orientation, and chose to leave things as they were.  One problem I have with the Alice B concept is the same problem I have with Eurotrash opera productions, which now set renaissance pieces in trenchcoats and the merry widow in a World War I bunker:  it may amuise the genius directing the piece but it does play nonsense with the piece's intentions and wreaks havoc on the mind of someone coming to the performance with no prior knowledge of what he is seeing.

Yes, there was a Merry Widow in Brussels wherein the leading lady sang the Act Three waltz to her leading man as they danced over World War I casualties lying all over the stage.

SPOILERS ABOUT LAST NIGHT'S MEDIUM AND SUNDAY'S DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.

.
.
.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES Spoiler....

Jennifer:  If the ghost/spirit of the troubled wife in MEDIUM was wrong, then wasn't Bree also wrong in this past Sunday's episode?

Even though George technically murdered her husband and tried to eliminate her shrink, wasn't her allowing him to think she'd called an ambulance while she consciously decided to let him die was as horrible (you said that you LIKED IT and hoped we are rid of George) as you say you found the ghost's action in last night's MEDIUM?

Why condemen one, and not the other, when both actions are quite similar?

This is a very interesting question.  Yes, I liked this Sunday's episode of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.  But when I say I liked it, I didn't mean i thought what Bree did was right.  Although perhaps since she is one of the heroines of the show, it is easier to overlook her wrongdoings.  IT wasn't quite the same situation as the wife on MEDIUM. Bree did not kill George. The wife intentionally killed her husband.  I thought the end of DH made for great tv.  Perhaps it's also because DH is sort of a comedy and MEDIUM is much more serious.

Anyhow great question.

DR Ginny - I played Lucy in CHARLIE BROWN when I was 13 years old, and sang it well, but couldn't act my way out of a paper bag once I got the costume on.

I wonder what the rightsholders would have said about that performance, especially since I was more attracted to Linus than to Schroeder, but of course I'm assuming we even had permission to do the show.  :)

Topic of the day - As to roles I'd like to play, since then, and in school shows only, I've always done fine in revues, but not book musicals.  A director in the law school drama group, with whom I had gotten pretty close,  said my problem as an "actor" was that I didn't seem to be interested in doing the work to try to become someone else, and that was fine for the revues but not for acting in book shows.   So I guess I wouldn't want to play any role of any sort, since I just don't have the acting chops for it and know it all too well.

I think consciously deciding NOT to call an ambulance that would save George's life, and then telling him that she did, constitutes at least "attempted homicide" on her part.  We don't really know if he is dead or will die, but I think there is no doubt that Bree held his life in her hands and decided it was worthless.

That's the same thing the husband did to his wife in MEDIUM.

I thought her revenge was SWEET!

I completely agree with you about the authors' intentions being followed implicitly and I understood Sondheim and Furth's intentions for the show before seeing the Alice B. Theater's production, so I could tell that they actually had some respect for Bobby's dilema.  But to paraphrase Into the Woods, they followed the path, but strayed a bit.  I felt that the ending (and intent) was the same, but how they got there was just...modified a little. ;)

Ben, sorry if it showed I was on--the kids were playing games online and had minimized HHW.  :)

Yes, AOL is shout-worthy, isn't it?  I got the TOS thing twice for sending a "bulk" email to the 60 or so people who are in my community choir.  If you call the TOS 800 number you can get put on something called the "white list" which supposedly keeps you "safe".  However, my second incident happened after I had called the TOS number, hence my extreme anger and threatened lawsuit which got me a whole whopping 2 months free service (even though they promised me 3).  I swear to heaven I am more than happy to start a class action lawsuit against any/all of the following:  AOL, eBay and PayPal.   The only reason I've kept AOL is because my Farmer article is on an AOL Hometown site and has been getting such regular recognition over the past year I haven't wanted to switch to another ISP.  I think now that the NPR thing has aired and things will quiet down (unless $cientology rears its ugly little head  ;D), that it may finally be time to move on.

DR's JMK, Ben, and other AOL "fans:"  A lady called the library the other day to ask for AOL's toll-free number so she could sign up for service.  I wanted to say, "DON'T DO IT!" but that's not my job, so I just looked up the number for her and she thanked me.

The sad thing about this, for me, is that they chose to leave things as they were for this play, which actually needs some reimagining, but cannot seem to leave well enough alone on other plays which DON'T.

I don't know if you have it in your area (or if you're even interested, if you do), but I have Comcast(.net).  According to their info:

The Personal Web Page feature allows any Comcast High-Speed Internet Service member to create and publish a 25MB Web page per E-mail account, accessible via the Internet.

With Comcast, you get up to seven (7) e-mail accounts, which means you could have up to 175 MBs of webpages.  Click HERE (http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=Comcast_net_SitePersonal_Web_Pages17679) for the "Personal Web Page Rules of the Road."

Things look bad for Agent McGee on NCIS.  Oh dear.

AND I think maybe the surprise on the mat on TAR (since the producers AND viewers are pretty much fed up with this editon) could be that BOTH the 3rd and 4th place finishers would be eliminated.  Then next week would be the two top teams for a finale.  But I don't know for sure....
Title: Re:BANG

Well....speaking just from THIS SIDE of the rainbow.

I don't even look at the Tams-Witmark catalog because they still send "sides" - and with a community theatre production and inexperienced actors, you lose a week of rehearsal while they try to figure the damned things out.  I have had a bad experience with their customer service representative but only because everything on the packing slip was NOT in the box.  We were missing a score, but they didn't believe it, and we ended up paying for it.  But I opened the box, and it wasn't there.

Samuel French sent some awful materials for The 1940's Radio Hour....there were scripts but NO vocal music scores...this was around 1992 or 1993, I guess and maybe it's different now, but teaching THOSE songs was fun!  But their materials for LITTLE SHOP were GREAT!!!  Go figure!

MTI has the best service representatives, the best materials (very user friendly). and they are very helpful if you have to schedule an additional performance or need extra material.  Of course you pay for it, but it is always available.  They also seem to know their material better than T/W.

But again that's just from my experience doing two musicals a year for the last 24 years.

Thanks for the findaplay website, DRJASON.  I will pass it along to our Program Committee!

Like Ben, I have mucho catching up to do. Returned yesterday on a redeye from San Jose, where I spent Thangsgiving with TPunk and her mom and also my wonderful Aunt Bea and Uncle Jim. A hectic visit, but fun, and TPunk's mom has no real internet access, so there was no posting. Prior to that I was working so hard at work just to be able to take my days off! So it has been ages, indeed.

TPunk is doing well,  though maybe getting a cold. She's been writing papers for school like crazy. I am pretty good myself after some positive news from a doc (have had some inexplicable irritations of late).

Hope everyone had a good holiday, and I look forward to catching up with the gang.

Sweeney in SWEENEY TODD (the musical, not the play)
Prospero in THE TEMPEST
Sir in ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT/ SMELL OF THE CROWD
Sheridan Whiteside in SHERRY (the musical)
Tevye in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

In DVD phraseology, "anamorphic" and "enhanced for widescreen" means the same thing. Some studios use one phrase and some use the other, but both mean that if you have a widescreen TV, the transfer's resolution will be better if played properly.

I'm not sure, but I think the crazy Christian woman from TRADING SPOUSES is a guest on Jay Leno tonight.  I think we have our next Clara Peller.

LAW & ORDER: SVU had a child abduction case that turned into something else and again made for riveting viewing. Always love the episodes when Stabler and Benson are a team. They've been breaking them up more lately so multiple episodes could be shot simultaneously to save time and money. But the show always works better when the two of them are together.

I saw an ad for the show during SVU tonight. It's on now, so obviously I'm not watching.

No TCB, I haven't made a decision on Hildy. I thought I would wait it out a bit and see if my allergy or whatever subsides, but it doesn't seem to be happening so far.

She is such a sweet, well behaved dog....I just don't know....I just don't know.

However, if I never have to sweep up massive amounts of dog hair again, it would be just fine with me! Man that dog can shed!

It is possible Mike, that you are allergic to the flea shampoo they used on her at the Humane Society, and not the dog itself.  Try bathing Hildy in a mild dog shampoo, and then see if you notice a difference.

I keep hoping Melissa's early Home to Myself album will come out on CD, but I don't think it's likely.

Me neither.  It would take a LOT to get me to watch Leno over Letterman.

I did bath her right after I brought her home. I picked up a shampoo that had no scent.

And who knows, it might not be the dog that I am allergic to. I have allergies this time of year, usually, anyhow.

Part of it all is just my adjusting to being a dog owner...the hair...the paw prints...the poop clean up in the yard...I don't know if I am cut out for it...owning a cat is a lot easier.

On the other hand, she is a joy to see each day!

George, thanks. You'll be happy to know I bought TPunk the ESSENCE OF MELISSA MANCHESTER CD and we enjoyed it on our travels.

Cool!  I'm glad you liked it! ;D

I have never watched this show, but as it started, I popped in a tape to tape it...just to see what happens.  I'm going to watch it tonight...and I'll watch Leno (which I rarely do).

Thanks DR MATTH - I don't have a widescreen or high def TV so the A or E really doesn't mean much to me right now.  Someday maybe, and it's nice to know.

WELCOME BACK to DRs RODZINSKI and TPUNK!

Sending good vibes to DR MBARNUM for his dog days.

DR JENNIFER, my weekly television newspaper said that the contestants on TAR would be greeted at the mat by a surprise.  And like you somewhere around the halfway mark, I figured what was going on.

SPOILER

It was a two-legged race.

DR Rodzinski: Welcome back! Send my good health vibes to DR TPunk.

DR Ben: Welcome back! You ready for Chita on Thursday night?

~~~~~Safe travel vibes for the Simbulan family and good early morning vibes for DR Jose~~~~~
Did anyone watch the finale of The Biggest Loser? Now there's some reality TV that I can appreciate. I was FLOORED by the transformations. I simply couldn't believe it. In fact, I was even inspired to work out tonight. Go fig!
And now...bed.
And she's still bitter about it!  :P
She (and a few others) do some fancy footwork in JUST FOR YOU the Bing Crosby-Jane Wyman movie....Julie certainly WAS a stunner!
Back from an ENDLESS day.  Rehearsal was brief but good, but I'm afraid the band rehearsal was an ordeal because my musical director is doing fifty other things and didn't have the time he needed to make the bass and drum parts easy - no bar numbers - very bad.  We got through it, but it was HARD.  And my drummer and bass player just get irked when the musical director isn't prepared.  Add to that that his brain was completely fried (he teaches kids all day long at various places) and it was a slow, slow evening.  But, more about it all later.
What is this with no postings for over an hour?  People were here when I arrived, but couldn't be bothered to make five lousy postings to get us to two hundred (not that that's important)?  I mean, November has been a month of the wurst WUSSBURGERING I've ever seen.  WUSSBURGERS, one and all and also all and one.
