Der Grampa and I will be grandladding again today, with a variation.  Mommie will be with us for at least part of the day.  We're off to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire... second time for us, first for the lads and Mommie.  This way, if William finds the movie to be too much for himself, one of us can go with him out of the theater, while Mommie gets to stay and watch to her heart's content.

Then, we're all going shopping.  Mommie will go shopping on her own, while we take the grandlads to make lists for Santa.  They're each going to have a notepad, so if there's anything either of them wants, they can make the note.

After that, we'll all be dining at a steakhouse.  Hopefully, that won't turn into a disaster.  Of course, with Mommie's firm belief that "You can't expect a five- or eight-year-old to behave..."  Uh, right.   ::) :P

It's going to be a fun day.  I hope.

Fred, thanks for your excellent thoughts on Miss Chita. What you say makes sense and, regarding the conflict, is probably true. I admit, I am not the general theatre going public so what's on stage is not always what I may want to see. I do agree with you that the choreography around her marriage to Mordente was a good bit and made it more touching.

I am so tired.  I was feeling better last night.  But for some reason I tossed and turned for much of the night.  And for the rest of the night I was up.  And at 4am my throat started hurting. But I could not take my antibiotics (cause they had to be taken with a meal).

I feel so bad that I could not help my sis with the baby.  I knew she really needed the help when she told me how exhausted she was and how much she wished I could have come over. :(

I've been watching Joan Rivers this morning on the Shopping Channel (in Canada).  Her stuff is interesting.  Not necessarily my taste (I think she caters to an older crowd). But she does seem to be selling out like crazy.  And it's sort of entertaining to watch while I'm half asleep.

I think I'm ready for the last season of FRIENDS. I remember crying through several of the episodes the first time around, and I suspect the sentimentality of it being their last year will hit me again.

I had a very funny experience with FRIENDS. Didn't watch it at all for the first five or six years, but watched one episode and immediately got hooked. Started taping the syndicated reruns (which seemed to be shown in the correct order) and then buying the season boxes when  they finally started coming out on DVD.

By the time the show was over, I liked the show better than WILL & GRACE, SEX AND THE CITY, or FRASIER, the other comedy shows that I had grown fond of during the time I discovered FRIENDS.

I kept seeing someone decorating (i.e., "trimming") a tree next door...and could only imagine BK must have been annoyed by the singing that some folks do while decorating.

Saturday greetings from a busy library!  To counteract our usual parade of bottom-feeders, we have had lots of "normal" folks in today for excerpts from Human Race Theatre's Seussical:  The Musical, a fundraising workshop for nonprofits presented by my predecessor, and a genealogy workshop.

DH Richard and I attended a lovely holiday concert last night at Miami University.  The Collegiate Chorale (coed) did a assortment of pieces, including "choral selections" from The Nutcracker.  That put the lyrics to "Jingle Bells" to several of the familiar Tchaikovsky tunes.  Very clever.  The second half of the concert was the Choraliers (all women) doing Britten's Ceremony of Carols.

Vibes to bk and his "Glittering Diamonds:"

"Glittering Diamonds...75 Years and Beyond:  On December 3, 2005, one of the most jubilant events in the history of Los Angeles City College will take place on the Vermont Avenue campus.  A star-studded salute to the achievements of the students, faculty, and staff of the Theatre Department and Academy will be held at 8:00 pm in the Camino Theatre. This concert-style benefit performance celebrates 75 years of excellence in theatre education and training. The once-in-a-lifetime show will feature appearances by celebrity alumni Cindy Williams, Mark Hamill, Hugh O'Brian, Diana Canova, Victor Love, Annette Cardona, Alex Henteloff, and Michael Lembeck, among others. Directed by Al Rossi and Bruce Kimmel, with Musical Direction by Rob Bowers, the evening will consist of songs and scenes, with tributes to distinguished alumni, including Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Charles Gordone, award-winning actor Paul Winfield, and one of American's most important theatre directors, José Quintero. Video montages of the film and television work of these and many other professional alumni will be an integral part of the event. Many current Theatre Academy students will also appear. The event will include a silent auction of theatrical memorabilia, and conclude with a post-performance champagne reception for performers and audience. This opportunity to renew old friendships, create new ones, and affirm the continuity and continuing excellence of the training at LACC is a one night only experience, memories of which, like diamonds, will last forever. Producer of the event is Fred Fate, Chair of the Theatre Academy, in association with Tina Saddington, president of the LACC Theatre Alumni and Associates, and Richard Galope, Executive Director of the LACC Foundation.  All proceeds will go to providing student scholarships and to support continuing development of the programs of the Theatre Academy.  For more details and ticket information call the Theatre Academy Box Office at (323) 953-4000 x2990."

I am so irritated at the office supply places around here. Last year it was easy as pie to find the Strathmore digital photo calendar kit and I made wonderful calendars for the family. Now, they all say that they won't carry the kits because they'd rather have people bring in their photos and pay them to make the calendars.  I just said, well, that's not going to happen and left.

I found them online and ordered a ton from an arts supply place and they were on sale, but still it irritates me.  So much for shopping local.

Luckily I have 2 kits from last year. I started making the calendars for a year from a person's birthday. So it's your year. But that takes keeping up with everyone all year, so I'm going back to the annual thing.  My parents just got back from seeing the Polar Bears in Churchill Canada, so I made a copy of my dad's disk of photos and that will be the first calendar I make.

Btw, here is Joan Rivers tip of the day (IT'S A GOOD ONE).

I know many people have more than one watch. Well when you are not wearing it, pull on the winder (not sure what you call the little piece that sticks out that you turn to set the time).  This saves the battery!

I feel so stupid.  Cause i've wasted so much of my batteries. I've never stopped my watches when not using them!

This is such a great tip. I can't believe I haven't been doing this all these years.

....And, yes, I've been busy/errant & truant/etc.  And, yes, I do have a lot of reading and posting to catch up on...  But that's life.  Well, my life right now.

Rehearsals are going well, but since we started orchestra rehearsals on Thursday, the days have been longer than usual.  -And we're not even officially into the 10 out of 12's yet!  -That's what happens when you place a four to five hour orchestra rehearsal back to back with a standard eight hour staging rehearsal.

I'm trying to get as much busy-work done in my "free time" so that I can actually take Monday off.  Totally off.  -However, I am playing a few hours of auditions on Monday at Ford's, but those should be very easy and leisurely.  -And it's a few extra dollars too for Christmas shopping... which I'll get done sometime before December 25th... I hope.

;)

However, I did have time to watch four episodes from the tenth season of FRIENDS. Hilarious and because one know all the character-driven back history with the six leads, the comedy just gains that much more depth. Compared to so many comedies on today, this one has such gut-wrenching humor. Many comedy shows now may make me smile and even laugh out loud a little, but rarely are they filled with several big belly laughs in each episode.

Evening all.

I want to apologize for being so E & T lately but I think that is something that will be the norm for awhile at least.

I don’t know how else to say it:  I’m having health problems.  It seems I get over one thing only to have something else go wrong.  It’s taking everything I’ve got just to make it back and forth to work.  I literally sleep on the bus ride home, get home, eat and then go straight to bed.

One of the problems I’m having is going to take surgery to correct and after the first of the year I will be out of work for about six weeks.  A few days after finding out that I need surgery, I contracted a really bad UTI.

I just can’t seem to catch a break and please, please believe me when I say I am just as sick of being sick as I know you are reading about my being sick. I was never like this before.  It just seems like these past couple of years everything is going wrong.

It's interesting to note that problem I'm having surgery for is the same problem I've been going to the doctor about for the past year.  I was told that "everything is normal".  I was starting to think it was in my head but swore that the next time it happened I was going to go to the ER.  It turns out that was the best thing I could have done because they found the problem and everything is NOT normal.

It is my most fervent hope that after this next surgery, I will be pass the bad times once and for all.    :)

Sorry to be so long winded when I finely did post, I just wanted to let you guys know so you wouldn’t think I was mad or upset or anything like that because I’m not posting.  It’s just that I’m so worn out that I can’t see to catch up on  posts or emails and I feel so far behind and out of it that I can’t comment on what’s going on.  So please bear with me.  I will answer emails and post when I feel up to it.

I’m counting on you all to keep me company when I’m off for those six weeks.  Thank goodness I bought the lap top and have the wireless router for when I’m bed ridden those first few days/weeks!

You are all in my thoughts and I hope everyone is doing well.  I also hope you liked the cards and CD.  If you didn’t get one, it was only because I didn’t have an address to send it to or you didn’t say you wanted a CD so I only sent a card.

Just let what I've had to go through be a lesson to all of you.  You know your body better then anyone.  If you think that something is wrong, then something may very well be wrong no matter what the doctor tells you.    Go and get a second or a third opinion if you really think that something isn't right.

Cillaliz do you do a different photo for every month?  I bet everyone looks forward to your gift.

Yes, the Strathmore Digital Photo Calendar Kit is great. It comes all prepunched with a binder and plastic covers for front and back. You go to a website and it prints the calendar page on one side and the photo you upload on the other. You just snap it together and you have a decent looking calendar.   This year should be fun, we had 2 weddings so there are tons of family photos.

I want to make my own calendars! I wonder if there are any places here that sell that kit.  I've seen many places that make the calendars for you. I wonder if the prices would be similar.

I ordered mine from Jerry's Artarama here's the link http://www.jerrysartarama.com/art-supply/catalogs/0066023000000

They are on sale for $7.95.

DR Jane, how do you tell your friends you are not sending gifts. You just say it? I've never heard of anyone doing that, but I guess it could work!

Yep-LOL.  It is easy to do when most of my friends feel the same way.  In addition to gifts I used to bake up a storm, now most of my friends and I try to watch what we eat.  We also don’t have children at home and the same flow of people running through our homes to help eat the treats.

Gift giving should be fun and if I see something I know someone will want I send it then instead of waiting for the holidays, certainly a different approach from when I collected things all year, beginning the day after Christmas.

How do you know that he's a guy?? ;)

I have a friend, Misi (pronounced just like "Missy" and that's her full, legal name...she had it changed) who loves and used to collect giraffes.  If your giraffe was a girl, I'd suggest naming after her (even though you've never met her).  She moved to Portland last year to be near her son and grandkids.  I haven't seen her since then, but I've heard that she's doing well. :D

I've been errant and truant since yesterday.  After work, I went to my sister's and we and my niece played Scrabble®.  I came in third...last. :P But it didn't surprise me.  Anyway, after that, I eventually came home and started to watch "Mysterious Skin" that I got from Netflix.  I watched the first 30 minutes or so before I started to nod off.  I figured I'd better get myself to bed before the movie is over and I won't know what I watched!  So, I'm going to watch the rest of it a little later tonight.

Today, my niece and I went to see "Rent" again. During the song, "Take Me For What I Am,” the movie stopped and all of the lights came on!  A couple of people went to the lobby to find out what happened, but eventually someone from the theater came in and said that there was a power surge and that EVERY movie had stopped.  They said that they'd be able to get everything reset in a few minutes, which they did.  After the movie was over, I drove my niece home and I went to work for a couple of hours.  I'm home now after dinner (I had a coupon for a free Whopper from Burger King...a.k.a. BK ;) AND I also had a diet Coke, the official drink of HHW) and will be watching the rest of "Mysterious Skin" in a little bit.

But the only Broadway Divas that I've seen live are:  Betty Buckley (in Sunset Blvd. on Broadway 10 years ago this month!), Patti LuPone (in concert in Seattle, earlier this year) and Bernadette Peters (in concert, here in Olympia eight or nine years ago).

Fabulous all! ;D

Well, I don't really, that came from Keith.

So I asked Keith how he knows it's a guy and he said it's asexual and George (his original idea to name it after my brother) could also be a girl’s name.

Misi is cute and much better than Missy.  I will pass your suggestion on to Keith.  Thanks.

I checked the new CD’s that arrived, no Annette- something we should correct.  My thoughts are with her and my best wishes she can stay in her home.

I finished up the first disc in the FRIENDS Season 10 set. All hilarious and memorable. Looking forward to the other shows.

They didn't do a full season that last year, so I understand there will be fewer episodes to watch in this box. They did have some intriguing extra features on the fourth disc since there weren't any episodes on it.

And I have to say the video quality of this 10th set is really very good (the shows were not shot in high definition). When I watched some episodes from season 4 a week or so ago, some of them were not especially sharp, looking almost like they had been taken from videotape masters.

These new ones are much sharper.

Next, I pulled THE DAYDREAMER off the to-watch shelf and viewed it.

Having taken some flack earlier this week for ragging on Rankin-Bass's RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEEER, imagine my surprise to be reminded that this feature film was made by the same Rankin-Bass responsible for RUDOLPH.

Of course, they had a feature film budget and talented folks like Ray Bolger and Jack Gilford and Boris Karloff and Margaret Hamilton to voices by folks like Burl Ives, Hayley Mills, Patty Duke, Tallulah Bankhead, Ed Wynn, and others. The songs were lovely (was that REALLY Hayley Mills singing that song; I know she gets credit on the soundtrack album) and while the animation had that jumpiness and poor lip matching just like RUDOLPH had, a bigger budget made for more settings and fancier effects.

All in all, I liked it but mostly for the songs. The DVD looked just fine. I was afraid it was going to be from a tape master because it began looking a little soft, but it quickly sharpened up and was fine looking. The PatheColor might have been just a touch faded, but nothing terribly awful. Anchor Bay did the transfer, so they probably didn't break their necks looking for the highest quality materials.

Then I put in one of my favorite movies - THE NUN'S STORY.

Alas, the DVD has not been released yet (promised for 2006), so I watched the first hour on laserdisc. It looks fine, but I'm reasonably certain Warners will do a fine job with it for DVD. I love Audrey in CHARADE and TWO FOR THE ROAD and WAIT UNTIL DARK and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S and SABRINA and FUNNY FACE and others, but I think this is probably my favorite performance of hers.

Tomorrow, I have to get to Friday night's MONK which I still haven't watched. I want to finish ALIEN 3 on DVD, and I have more FRIENDS to watch.

Some of my usual Sunday night TV programs do have new episodes tomorrow night, so I'll have that to watch as well.

I had never heard of THE DAYDREAMER until just now. Sounds pretty cool. Some Goulet music I don't own, I guess.

Just today I was thinking that every year ABC Family shows some Rankin-Bass show that I never knew existed. Today's was a Pinocchio Christmas one that I never remember seeing. Now THE DAYDREAMERS.

I recorded the MAD MONSTER PARTY? music onto my minidisk for my own enjoyment, as Gale Garnett sings a couple of good tunes.

I did not realize that Gale Garnett sang on THE MAD MONSTER PARTY! Every now and then she pops up in a guest role on one of the old WB shows like HAWAIIAN EYE or SURFSIDE 6 when she was a young, struggling actress.

I picked up one of her CDs but really only liked about half the songs on it. But the half that I did like, I liked a lot.
Title: Re:IT'S SHOW TIME
Post by: Matt H. on December 03, 2005, 08:34:48 PM
For those who don't know, THE DAYDREAMER mounts several Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales in stop motion animation with a linking story of the teenaged Hans (played and also voiced by Paul O'Keefe from THE PATTY DUKE SHOW) looking for the Garden of Joy.

And yes, Robert Goulet does sing the title song (and it's pretty).

Am now watching my KING KONG dvd. I just love this movie! And the picture is so clear! They did a nice job on this one!

But evidently there was no money in the budget for poor Fay Wray to be able to have a bra to wear...the weather must have been a bit nippy in some of those scenes! LOL!

No wonder the Hays code was enacted! :o

Thanks for the LACC story link, DRGINNY.

And DRCILLALIZ thanks for the link about Paul's mural.  Your pictures were MUCH better!  That is a beautiful piece of artwork.

Thanks, but I still haven't gotten a photo since it's been finished.  The third floor is pretty cool and was a big deal for him....he's afraid of heights. He was terrified and was a mess every evening when he thought about going back up on the cherry-picker to work on it. But he did it...I am very proud of him for actually getting up there and doing it.  He's working on a mural at a local high school right now and has 2 more outside businesses to paint next year.

I'm waiting for something very special. My sister gave me 2 really ugly cement cats a couple years ago and Paul is going to paint them as Callie and Nilla.   Well, that's the plan, I've been waiting for almost 2 years now.  He swears I'll have them by Christmas, but I heard that last year, so I'll believe it when I see it  :)

DR Danise: Best vibes for your good health. I do hope you'll be feeling better very soon! And thank you for the picture CD!! I'll be sure to pass DR Jose's on to him as soon as he gives me his address. :)

DR Jane: While our giraffes are quite different from one another, I think yours is quite adorable! I'm not sure what I'd name him...I'm horrible at picking names for pets and inanimate objects. ;) I'd call him something cliched like "Stretch," even if he turned out to be female. Actually, if he were female I'd be inclined to call him/her, "Stritch."  :P

Speaking of distinguishing male from female animals...I found out this morning that the tapir on exhibit in the Southeast Asian building at the Bronx Zoo is a very well-endowed male. Poor thing - he had a monkey on his back (literally) when it was apparent that he just wanted some alone time... Haha! Imagine my surprise when I noticed that I had unwittingly snapped a photo while he was displaying his manhood...

Rodzinski, the title song from Daydreamer, sung by Goulet, is quite lovely...though I find most of the score negligible.  I lobbied hard for Mr. Kimmel to include it in the last Guy Haines album as it is a perfectly lovely song for both his voice and, I think, his spirit.  It's also a song that desperately needs reviving...and by somebody who knows how.  Apparently, it was in the mix for awhile...though it didn't make the cut.   I'm happy to say another song I lobbied hard for, the Gene McDaniels classic, Point of No Return, did make the cut...though I'm not sure I had a damned thing to do with it.

BK, wherever you are, hope your portion of the show went swimmingly.  Hope the whole show did, for that matter, but particularly your portion and that you get all the kudos you so richly deserve.  I suspect you're having a swimmingly terrific time at the afters partay, hobnobbing with the likes of Hugh O' Brian and Mark Hamill and feasting on delicious foodstuffs.
