Title: THE HAINES REPORT
Post by: bk on December 06, 2005, 01:36:50 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know the report, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be very soon - as soon as they finish listening to their Guy Haines CDs.

Topic of the Day:  Favorite renditions of Sondheim songs?? (including original cast recordings)

#1:  Dame Edna's version of "Losing My Mind" tied with Dorothy Collins' original version.
"I'm Still Here" by Yvonne DeCarlo.  Dorothy Loudon's version is a close second
"Send In the Clowns" by Anni-Frid Lyngstad (the brunette from ABBA) who sings it in Swedish!
"Water Under the Bridge" by Debbie Gravitte

There are, of course, many, many, many (that's three manys) more, but I can't think right now (it's almost 2:15 a.m. PST).  Goodnight, all!

And Thanks, BK!  I got the package today!! ;D

Hoo and Ray! (one of my favorite comedy teams from radio days)
I got rid of my computer glitches, so that i can at last log on to this here site.  It's nice to know Guy did well in SF.

I'm back just in time for all the upcoming clebrations!  And like Foremost milk and its cows, I am fastidiously fresh.

So, hello everybody, this is Mrs. Norman Maine.

DR Jane, yesterday you mentioned that two of the side effects of my antibiotic are dizziness and malaise.  The only side effects it said with the bottle are diarrhea, dizziness, nausea.

I never seem to get dizziness or nausea.  I always get drowsy.  The sad part is it's not even for antibiotics.  It's anything that could even remotely make you dizzy.  Now, not advil or motrin.  But sudafed that says non-drowsy totally knocks me out. And any other med like that, and I"m a goner.

So often it's hard to tell if i'm still sick.  Right now i think it's turned into a bit of a cold.  At night I have this drip in my throat (easily remedied by sudafed).  And my nose is running a bit.  But my throat is pretty good.

Only 2 more days of the antibiotics.

There was nothing on tv last night that I watch.  The only thing I taped was THE CLOSER with Kyra Sedgwick (sp?). That is on here on Mondays.  Really good show.  It's sort of like the order part of LAW AND ORDER.  But basically it is named because she excels at questioning witnessing.  Very good show, and she is fantastic in it (and I don't even like or watch police dramas).

Tonight is THE AMAZING RACE.  Hopefully it will be interesting. Last week they sort of misrepresented that hot air balloon crash.

Also I will tape BOSTON LEGAL.  And perhaps the VICTORIA SECRET FASHION SHOW.

Good morning, all!  This is the BIG DAY and I am starving.  I cannot eat a thing until after I am dismissed from St Luke's-Roosevelt around 3:30 pm or so.  I will spend the morning working on orchestrations and trying hard to not think of food.

TOD:
I prefer the original casts on most performances:  Dorothy Collins and Glynis Johns are still irreplaceable  IMO.
on UNSUNG SONDHEIM, I'm crazy about "There's Always a Woman" and Debbie's "Water Under the Bridge"
"What Can You Lose?" the great Guy Haines recording
"Send in the Clowns" Cleo Laine's Carnegie Hall recording from the 70s
   "Goodbye for Now" Liz Callaway

I had a FASTIDIOUS biopsy this morning (I know that's not the proper use of the word, so sue me!) when I went to the dermatologist. Results next week. He thinks it's nothing but he wants to be sure. It was a spot which showed up a little more than a year ago. He said it was pre-cancerous and we got rid of most of it with a cream (Carac I believe it's called). Now for the last follow-up since there is still a slight mark he decided to biopsy it and make sure it's nothing serious. It may be a basal cell skin cancer but he said that would be easy to remove and if it's the remains of the pre-cancerous mark that will be easy to treat also.

No more sun for me!!!

Good morning!

DR elmore - I hope your procedure goes well today and that everything is OK.  Do you have someone to help you get home afterward?

DR Ben - Did you receive the mail I sent you?  Your volunteer work sounds like fun and it's so worthwhile.  If I were staying in my favorite Comfort Inn, I'd pop in to help!

My friend Matthew is busy this afternoon, so I've sent Skip Kennon an email to see if he's free.  My goddaughter Charlotte is booked until 8:30 so she's out and her father's singing in New Jersey tonight with Rob Fisher, so Ron's unavailable.  I may be standing outside St Lukes at noon hiring someone.  Otherwise, I'm stuck in the hospital until the doctor releases me.

We woke up to three inches of snow much to the disgust of the Vixter who (despite my precautions) had worked herself up to expecting a blizzard of epic proportions and who had carefully planned how she was going to spend her "snow day " off from school

As I dropped her off at school  with my customary, "I love you have a great day" she muttered  "It's too late for that"  and trudged off to class.

Me too, DR vixmom, as did your story about The Vixter's thwarted snow day!

I just spoke on the phone with Vixdad. He rides into work on the train with one of the Vixter's schoolmates' mom.  She said her son had exactly the same reaction as the Vixter's, apparently going so far as to say that the TV weather forecasters should be sued for raising people's hopes and  expectations and then letting them down.

On location here at the Oakland Airport.  What I hate about Southwest:  No reserved seats, you board in groups.  I did an online boarding pass, which put me in group A, of course.  But, now, if you don't get to the airport ninety minutes before the fly, the line for even group A is ridiculous.  I'm first here, but only because I was here two hours early.

The Super Shuttle, which I also hate, was twenty minutes late in picking me up, and I was not the last customer - we had one more pickup.  The driver was a complete jerk - I'd been told by the dispatcher that I was the last stop.  The driver informed me I wasn't.  I got a bit annoyed and informed him that I a) was upset that he was twenty minutes late, and b) that I wasn't too happy we had another pickup.  I asked strongly how long it would take to get to the airport?  He got very loud with me, telling me I was making him nervous.  I said, "I'm making YOU nervous?  I wasn't twenty minutes late, I don't have another pickup to make."  He then said loudly, "Look, I'm very upset - they have a new system and it isn't working well" blah, blah, blah.  I said, "Your system is your problem, you were supposed to be here between five-fifteen and five-thirty and it's now five-fifty."  I thought seriously about telling him what he could do with his shuttle and his system, but he said it would only be twenty minutes to the airport once we got the last guy.  He didn't, of course, mention that the last guy was completely on the other side of town.  And the other guy took almost ten minutes to come downstairs and get on the van.  The other person in the van was already calling a cab, which I said I'd go halves on.  But, then we got going and I got here in plenty of time.

I will be asking for a refund (I didn't pay, but my hosts should get the refund anyway).

The group B line is now huge and there are people in line for group C.

DR Vixmom, I got a hearty laugh from your tale of woe concerning the Vixter. How well I remember the same thing when I was her age. However, I found, even as a teacher wishing for some time off, that the heavy snow never came when forecast. The big blizzards always came by surprise which made our joy even more delicious.

She'll be out soon for her holidays anyway.

Our local TV critic wrote a scathing pan of the holiday classic A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS saying he had always found it dull, gloomy, and a downer.

Guess that's why it won the Peabody and Emmy Awards in 1965 and has remained a viewing favorite for four decades and sold millions of copies of the delightful jazz score. Obviously, he's talking about some other CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS that I've never seen.

Owing to the fact that (or, in other words, "Because...") nothing else was on TV last night that even slightly interested me, I tuned in to the SciFi Channel's "The Triangle".  It has great credentials and a very interesting cast.

I was lucid only through about an hour of it, but despite at least one terribly banal dialogue exchange, it developed an interesting story and built up quite a bit of tension.  I believe (as I missed the last 15 minutes napping in my rocker) it's continued.

Frankly, I can't see how that last 15 minutes could possibly have tied up all the loose ends and wild hypotheses that had been expounded on up to that point.

But...I HAVE seen TV movies do that, too.

David Campbell doing just about everything in the off-Broadway production of SATURDAY NIGHT

Raul Esparza doing "Franklin Shepard Inc."

Daisy Eagan doing "Broadway Baby" on the Tonys

Michael Cerveris and Rebecca Luker doing "Happiness"

Last night after drving home from work, picking the Vixter up from her dance class, running home and making her dinner and then droppingher off at her play rehearsal and then doing a quick bit of shiopping, running home and meeting Vixdad, picking the Vixter  up from her play rehearsal and going to a diner for a quick bite to eat, putting the Vixter to bed,
I sat down and had a lovely long telephonic chat with William F. Orr, The Errant and Truant,  He pleads that he is busy setting finals, and researching the purchase of a new motor vehicle, but sends all his best wishes.

He also sends a speciific message to DR Jason... he has JUST (last night) opened his email from you containing your singing and he was absolutely blown away.  He says it was wonderful and wants to know when BK will be offering you a record deal.

You're right! I'd forgotten about that... I hope, though, that I've vastly improved since then. And, I was sick on the day we recorded POOP.

I have an idea!

WE'LL put on a show!

We have all the talent we need right here.  We have the director and choreographer, the singers and the dancers, we can build sets and sew costumes.

Why, Sure!

EVERYbody will come.

Finally home.  Flight was delayed twenty minutes.  And for whatever reasons, they let five sickening businessmen preboard before even the preboards.  They, of course, took the bulkhead aisle seats, but more importantly they took ALL the luggage space in the first three compartments.  How obnoxious is THAT?  I had to put my stuff in the fourth luggage compartment even though I snagged the second row aisle seat.  And we all know how easy it is to have to go two compartments in back of you when trying to retrieve your luggage so you can leave the plane.  Happily, I was there so fast that the gentleman in front of that luggage compartment handed me my overnight bag and laptop, and I got off the plane quickly.

Can I say how much I'm not liking abc.com?  I was trying to check if LOST is new tomorrow (apparently it's a repeat).  But they make it VERY difficult to figure out.  Almost every other station website says "new" or "fresh" when they list their shows. It makes it so much easier to figure out what is new.

That non-drowsy stuff gets me too.  Yeast infections were also listed as a side effect, so don't forget to take an acidophilus blend.

A friend just sent me this....

     WARNING! WARNING! LIBERAL BIAS AHEAD

After numerous rounds of "We don't know if Osama is still alive", Osama himself decided to send George Bush a letter in his own handwriting to let him know he was still in the game.

Bush opened the letter and it appeared to contain a single line of coded message:

                     370HSSV-0773H

Bush was baffled, so he e-mailed it to Condi Rice. Condi and her aides had no clue either, so they sent it to the FBI.  No one could solve it at the FBI so it went to the CIA, then to the NSA.

With no clue as to its meaning they eventually asked Britain's MI-6 for help. Within a minute MI-6 cabled the White House with this reply: "Tell the President he's holding the message upside down."

I'll post photos as soon as I'm able. First, we have to find out if we can even keep a cat. I have a feeling she's going to say no. She's one of those weird landladies who magically appears out of thin air and taps you on the shoulder to confront you about who left the front gate open the night before or, "Are you aware that your bathroom is flooding the rest of the building?" We've had many knocks on our door from her telling us that we've recycled the wrong stuff and she got billed for it. Of course, she doesn't know what it was that we recycled that was wrong, but she got the bill for it and wanted us to know it. The other day, to help "keep the apartment warm," she gave us some sort of inner tube to lay across the bottom of the door to block any drafts that may come. I have a better suggestion - turn on the heat!! :)

Anyway...I've a feeling she'll say no, but here's hoping. And the pictures would go up right away, of course. ;D

I LOVE this version...not so much because it's three hunky men singing a song that was written to be sung by women (which is always a good thing ;)), but because the music director didn't take the song so quickly to make the lyrics unintelligible!  I've heard too many performances (locally, I'll admit) that try to take the song as fast as possible...much, much, much (that's three muches) too fast for the performers.

Back from RENT, and I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. It's more a "regular" musical now as opposed to a pop opera, so I liked that aspect quite a lot.

The sound level was several hundred decibels less in the theater today than was present at the Nederlander Theatre when I saw the show.

And the ability to use montage during the numbers to keep the visual interest equal to the aural interest was a help. Now, there are things to see other than folks with wrap around mikes singing in your face.

No, I still only like about half of the score, but that half is performed sensitively and beautifully by this cast, and it's great seeing so many of the original folks doing the roles they made famous.

I had had nothing to eat all day, so after walking home from the theater, I fixed myself a belated lunch and watched some more of DEAD MAN'S FOLLY that I had started last night. Having seen this and read the book a couple of times, I do remember the identity of the murderer, but I'm enjoying seeing how the writer-director is trying to deflect attention away from the guilty parties by planting uninportant information and making it seem important. Fun.

The movie is pretty lame, but Debbie does beautifully with the songs, and that piano solo Chat Everett "plays" is one of the most beautiful piano solos in the movies. (It was the last cut on the first side of the soundtrack LP.)

And, yes, I've been extremely errant and truant and truant and errant.   That just happens sometimes.

I had actually tried to post yesterday - which was my day off - but I just "felt" like staying off the computer and/or looking at a computer screen... My eyes needed the rest.  And I think sleeping till Noon... and then taking a power nap around 7:00 also had something to with my absence.

-Sometimes you just don't know how tired you are until you have the time to be tired.

Absolutely, Jose.  You can go, go, go...and then worry that you're not going enough.  But when you sit back and relax, you suddenly realize you've passed a threshhold and need rest.

MBarnum - Some famous Sondheim Bollywood trivia:

Dainty June and Her Bollywood Blondes sang "I Have a Moo Cow" in GYPSY

"Sweet Bolly Plunkett saw her life pass" - sung by Patti Lupone in a current hit revival

"Bolly Moses, natcherly we're punks" from East Side Story

The recent revival of his show BOLLIES featured the great Bolly Bergen

He was mentored by Oscar Hammerstein, who wrote "Bolly High"

Etc.

Michael Lembeck also played a caterer with whom Blanche Devereaux fell in love but scorned because he was "just" a caterer and therefore not good enough. As for Chita Rivera's new show...

I saw "Chita... And All That Jazz" a couple of years ago in Richmond.  I liked it a lot.  And she did a ton of dancing - backed up by a mini-chorus of dancing men.  *"Hey, Big Spender!" was FUN-NY!.  With not much book involved.  It was basically a career retrospective/revue.  I thought it was destined for a larger venues, but it peetered out somewhere along the way.

Hmmm...your liking it (and my LOVING it) aren't really the same things as MBarnum enjoying it.  Of course, it's gaudy and has huge production numbers, which he might love, too...it's hard to say.

Hugh O'Brian has a "bit" as Mitzi Gaynor's fiancee and, later, hubby.  He has a scene or two...nothing major.

If you want PRIME O'Brian, look for "Where Love Has Gone" with Lana Turner.  It's a soaper, for sure, but Hugh is majorly exposed on a beach in something resembling Speedos.

My hometown, Louisville, KY! They're going to fly her out there one day this week to get a tour from the "relocation counselor" so she can see the city and look at some apartments. They'll give her moving expenses, a 401K, health benefits and several other perks as well as close to 50% in pay increase. Is she going to take the job? She doesn't know yet.  ::)

(you think I remember their names?  I have trouble remembering my name some mornings...)

Okay I looked 'em up

Robert Westenberg and Chuck Wagner
Well, Bob and Chuck may have been the first Princes on Broadway, but only Chuck was involved with the original original cast, at the Old Globe in San Diego (http://www.theoldglobe.org/productions/intothewoods181.html).  The fellow der Brucer and I saw play Cinderella's Prince was Kenneth Marshall.  (If it had been Westenberg, I'd have insisted that der B and I wait at the stage door to say hello; he's a friend of mine from college.)

Watched NCIS for the first and last time tonight. A serial killer due to be electrocuted in a few days decides to play cat and mouse games with his old nemesis (Mark Harmon) in a canny plot to postpone his execution.

No likeable characters (well, except for one brainy guy the rest of the cool officers loved picking on; I HATE bullies), a scenario so full of holes and contrivance that my eyes were rolling in my head before fifteen minutes had passed.

But the show has been flowering in the ratings this year, and I wondered why. THAT'S the biggest mystery involved with this show that I could fathom.

MY NAME IS EARL had some funny slaptsick and a deceitful character who kept exhorting, "Don't you judge me" that reminded me of some parents I had conferences with during my years of teaching.

I hope NBC's decision to air this opposite CSI starting in January doesn't backfire and kill it. It's a funny show with a good heart.

THE OFFICE had an episode that was amazingly schitzophrenic. Part of it was very funny and the other part made me so uncomfortable (bad reactions to a Secret Santa gift exchange at work that turned into a very sour Chinese auction) that I was squirming in my chair. And yet, the show ended on a note of good cheer and laughter.

This show walks a very thin emotional tightrope, and sometimes they fall off.

I also watched the last half of THE SINGING NUN.

I had forgotten that this was a BIG MGM reunion film with all of the major actors from MGM's golden days: Debbie, Greer Garson, Agnes Moorehead, Ricardo Montalban (who looked GREAT), and Tom Drake. (Had forgotten Katherine Ross was in it, too, as well as the always wonderful Juanita Moore.)

This was shot in Panavision, but looked more like early Cinemascope in 2.55:1 aspect ratio. It was VERY narrow.

Dr. Shrinker
Wonderbug
The Lost Saucer
Magic Mongo

I wonder if they will ever release any of the one-year wonders of Hanna-Barbara on DVD.  Shows like FRANKENSTEIN JR AND THE IMPOSSIBLES, SPACE KIDDETTES, WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME.

DRMBARNUM - I think there is enough music and lights to keep you awake during THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS....it's like a mini Bollywood movie with BIG numbers breaking out all over....and Mitzi Gaynor with a wastebasket on her ass.  Who could ask for anything more?

DR RLP - I am shocked SHOCKED that you have given a film the wrong title.

Mr Hugh O'Brien, Mr Cliff Robertson, and Miss Lana Turner all appear in the film LOVE HAS MANY FACES....with the most amazing example of camel toe on a major star I have ever seen....I had to look away!

WHERE LOVE HAS GONE on the other hand stars Susan Hayward, Mike Conners, Joey Heatherton, and Bette Davis is a white-washed version of the Turner-Stompanato-Crane fiasco.

MR BK you were lucky.  You would have had to work with *gulp* Bonnie Franklin.

I've never seen Frankenstein Jr, except as a comic book, and I heard it's pretty good. Wonder if they ever show it on BOOM, that non-stop Hanna Barbera network.

I liked NCIS - tonight's episode is a repeat and not one its better shows.  I like the actors who play their familar parts well.  But then, that's horses for you.

TAR is headed for the last round up with a two-hour finale next week!  Then let's get BACK to the regular race, folks!!

Living near Indy, JRand, you must have run into Ms. Romano and her two lovely daughters—okay, one lovely one—from time to time.

She claimed to shop at Block's!  So I stopped going there.  And there are NO apartments like the one she lived in in Indianapolis that I know of.  I don't know who the Indianapolis "expert" was on that show, but I don't think they ever did more than open the phone book.

I remember "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl" and a show about Isis.  Anyone remember that?

Good Evening!

Well... I'm almost caught up on the Notes and Posts from the past couple of days.  I believe I just need to catch up on Tuesday and Wednesday (today) at this point...

But that will have to wait until tomorrow/today/Wednesday...

Thankfully, my call is not until Noon tomorrow, but I do need to get up early enough to get my workout in - which I've faithfully been doing the past two and a half weeks! - and also make a run to the grocery store before heading in...

But before I go...

RE: Strep...  I used to get strep regularly.  However, it was not regularly enough to get my tonsils taken out.

I had a little bit of a scare put into me the last time I went in for a strep test.   My doctor informed me that sometimes strep can be almost asymptomatic.  It can hurt for the first day or two and then just sort of disappear.  Sometimes, strep will just truly go away on its own, but other times it may end up lingering.  The infection and the "bad stuff" are still in your system - even if your throat no longer hurts.  Worse, the strep bacteria(?) can actually end up affecting and infecting your heart.   -And that can go on for weeks at a time with no "real" symptoms.

So... I no longer "ignore" my sore throats.

The same bacteria that causes strep throat causes scarlet fever.
