Title: WHAT'S MY SEGUE?

Well, you've read the notes, you've segued from one paragraph to another, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to segue to coming home, but they don't know what a segue is - they think it's a dance.

I must be going to bed now because I'm going to see "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" at 9:15 in the morning!  Why does my niece (it was her decision) have to see a movie at the first showing...especially when it's so darned early?  That's what I want to know.  Anyway, I'm going.  But before I do...

¡¡¡ HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR GINNY !!!

Good morning, all!  Today I have another trip to Toyland, then a trip to Brokeback Mountain.  After that, it's anyone's guess.  I realized my Father's birthday is in 3 days, so I have to send him a card and shop for his Christmas gift.

I plan on keeping the one I can't forget in my private atelier.  It's no one's business until my private diaries are published.  Or one of my friends spills the beans.

Getting ready to leave for work.  My sister Molly is driving.

It is as difficult to buy a tire in Indiana on Sunday as it is to buy beer.  It just ain't happening!  So I am driving on that THING that they give you....it's a toy tire.

And tomorrow I will travel back to BIG O ...  that's twice in less than a week!

Yes, I thought the KING KONG remake was going to be wonderful....they certainly promoted it as something exciting and talked about the HUGE model they built.  I think I was used for one shot and all it did was raise its arm....the rest of it....a man in a monkey suit.  Toho Style, but without the Toho humor.

Deadly!

Lucie Arnaz was probably looking for you, MR BK.

And after all you have $10.46 that you didn't have yesterday!

Loathed every second of the KING KONG remake back in the day. For a long time, it was always the movie I said was my all-time worst movie ever made. Probably replaced by by 1492 or INCHON, but it was truly awful.

The one I'll always remember I believe I've talked about here before: my first boy friend Clay whom I met when I was a freshman in college and he was a sophomore. Our first encounter was a total shock to me since I was tutoring him in Spanish (he was a football jock not adept with foreign language) and didn't imagine in my wildest dreams that something other than schoolwork was about to happen.

One thing I discovered on my DVR that I had forgotten I had recorded was THE PRINCESS DIARIES II. Never having seen it, I believe I'll be spending the afternoon with Misses Andrews and Hathaway.

Ann Hathaway is in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, too.

Read on the internet this morning that BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN has won Best Picture of 2005 from the L.A. Film Critics Circle. Director Ang Lee won Best Director.

Philip Seymour Hoffman won Best Actor for CAPOTE with Heath Ledger from BROKEBACK coming in second in the voting.

Jennifer stay home and rest, don't mess with a sore throat.  If you like black licorice, it might help soothe your throat.  It worked for me with my cold and mild sore throat.  I like Panda natural licorice.

DR MattH, I love the Princess Diaries movies.  I'll be curious to see if you like #2.  I would think there would be way too much teen girly stuff for most men.  But I love it!

Btw, just watched Veronica Mars.  Weird how they only announced which ending won at the end of the show.

Also, do you feel like you need a PhD just to follow some of the happenings.  There are so many confusing twists and turns, that I find myself having to think things through just to keep everything straight.

And I love the big shocking twists at the end of each episode.

I'm up, I'm up.  Lovely long sleep, but my throat is so trashed from coughing yesterday I can barely produce any sound out of it.   I'll have some nice hot emergenC and C if that helps.  In the meantime, where in tarnation IS everyone?  You'd think it was a Sunday or something.

I see I've finally come up with a topic that no one wants to touch with a ten foot Pole or even a five foot Czech.  Feel free to make your own topics.

Then I will give you the same advice I gave Bruce, sleep propped up on pillows.  It might help your throat as well as a cough.  It just keeps everything from draining to undesirable places.

Sunday greetings and thank you all for the lovely birthday wishes.  We were at the Indiana State Museum at 11am for our timed entry into the Lord of the Rings exhibit, which was quite interesting even to me - not so much of a LOTR fan.  We spent a couple of hours in the exhibit, had lunch in the museum cafe, and shopped in the gift shops there and at the Eiteljorg Museum next door.  The museums are a nice walk away from our hotel along the canal - it's pretty cold, but very refreshing.  We're relaxing in our room now, having hot chocolate, before proceeding out later for the steak dinner I've requested.

Had a nice afternoon thus far with two movies. First up was THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2, and, yes, I was definitely not the target audience for this movie. I'm sure preteen girls loved it, and for the young at heart (DR Jennifer, that's you), it could also be fun. Even I found parts of it fun and even sweetly, innocently romantic.

I wanted to see it, of course, because there was much publicity at the time of its release about Julie Andrews doing a small amount of singing in the film. She starts talking the song, and I sort of despaired that she'd be able to find any kind of pitch, but lo and behold, she did sing. Very low and very soft, but she stayed on pitch, and it gave me a warm feeling to hear Julie once again in song. No, the soaring soprano is a thing of the past, but we have her films and recordings for the Julie of old, but we also know now that in small doses, she can take to song just fine.

I next pulled up off the DVR the brilliant 1940 fantasy THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD. I have resisted watching this movie again for the last thirty years or so because every copy of it I've ever seen was a dark, murky public domain disaster.

I don't know which print TCM got its hands on, but it is astonishingly bright, clear, sharp, GORGEOUS. What a joy to see this wonderful movie looking so new and wonderful again!

Since I'm not watching SURVIVOR, and I don't watch EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION (expanded to two hours tonight so there wouldn't need to be a DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES rerun), I will be watching some DVDs until 10 when a new CROSSING JORDAN comes on tonight.

Haven't picked out which movie it will be yet.

I'm back from the movies and I've just emailed my semi-complete draft of the BABES IN TOYLAND Editorial commentary to everyone on the project for their feedback.   I still the critical commentary on each musical number to write, but I've finished an Intro, History, Commentary on Score and Libretto, Listing of all sources used, Editorial Method, and Acknowledgements.  I'm hoping my colleagues will tell me where it's vague, redundant, poorly spelled and poorly worded.

As for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, I have nothing to say beyond how emotionally wrenching it is by its very understatement and beauty.  I can't think of any symbol for innocence, hope, and love more potent than Brokeback Mountain since Kane's Rosebud.  It's quite a haunting film.

DRTPunk, I wish I'd invited you to come with us.

I thought you would have liked Danni actually since she has played so honestly.

I am a bit surprised that your fav is Rafe, since he has acted sweet, yet backstabbed all his alliance. I find him very odd.  Because he acts so completely nice. Yet he has almost singlehandedly screwed everyone who was supposed to trust him (cindy, judd, jamie...).

And I will freak if Lydia wins. She has done nothing thus far!

OK, news flash.  One hundred and thirty-one years ago today, in 1874, James Lewis Kraft was born.  He started his career in life, as a wholesale cheese distributor and processor, honestly enough.  However, in 1916 he patented a pasteurized process cheese, which was low-cost (read: cheap) and wouldn't spoil.  People weren't interested at first, but during WWI the U. S. Army bought more than six million tins of the stuff.  (Think of it as Army food.)  Later, during the Great Depression, it's low-cost (read: cheapness) made the stuff popular with the general public at last.

So now you know who is to blame for all the lousy cheese that's flooded today's market.  Easy-Mac, anyone?   :P

I debated coming to meet you but I am so stopped up I don't think I would have been good company, and I definitely wouldn't want to get you sick.

Please tell Rodzinski that he should see the movie!!!

Right now, der B is watching The Third Man on one of the cable stations.  The story is interesting, but the music has me in a zither.

We were watching that yesterday!

Just me and Jane in the jernt.  You'd think it was a Sunday or something, what with 38 posts at 11:30.  We're celebratin' a birthday here - most unseemly.

And then I left to go see Syriana.

For those of you who thought you saw me one the board today and then I winked out before posting.  You were correct.

I was in the middle of writting a post and something unseemly happened to the cable modem!

I guess someone hit a pole because it came back on a few hours later.

I'm sitting here now with Bear snoring in the background.  And I do mean SNORING!!  I wish I could rig this so you could hear him.   ;D

Vibes to TPunk and Jennifer to feel much better very soon.

Sounds like TPunk and I are singing the same malady.

The music for the new Kong, at least on CD, is just like every other film score of the last decade - not a theme in sight, droning, thumping, New Agey, choir for no reason - you know, James Newton Howard.  I, for one, would love to hear what Howard Shore was doing before they canned him.

The thing that I get a kick out of with the original  King Kong  is that back when it was first released, people were fainting in their seats.

I haven't heard of single movie in recent years that had that kind of effect on anyone.

Seems many Christian groups don’t like the expression “Happy Holidays” and want “Merry Christmas” back.

The 150,000-member American Family Association called for a boycott of Target (and other large chains), accusing the chain of banning the phrase "Merry Christmas" from its stores - a charge that Target denies.

And Bush who is usually bashed for not separating his religion from his politics has been bashed for his “Holiday”  vs “Christmas” greeting.  ::)

Back from my birthday dinner at a local Outback Steakhouse.  Had my usual 7-oz filet, a baked potato, and an excellent chopped bleu cheese salad.  We stopped at a grocery, bought a Bill Knapp's Celebration Cake and 2 pints of Haagen-Dasz (vanilla and dulce de leche).

It was delightful to come back to even more birthday wishes - thanks, all you lovely people!

So far this is the best tribute to Richard Pryor I have read: http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/entertainment/13384812.htm

The night Keith and I graduated from high school, in 1967, Richard Pryor entertained at our grad night party.  At the time I had no idea who he was, just that he was hysterical.

I am in a terrible trend of buying movies and not watching them. I'll watch something if it comes on on cable, but I am not popping DVDs in, and I even have some VHS movies that I've been sitting on for a long time now.

So what did I get yesterday? A DVD set called "Classic Troublemakers" that has four Lum & Abner movies on it, 5 East Side Kids movies and a bunch of Our Gang. I bought it mainly for the Lum & Abner. I think I've seen all these East Side Kids films, but I'll enjoy the OUR GANGs.

This can now sit beside my unopened 50 movie musicals set, and of course a small pile of movies MBarnum sent me.

I go in phases though, where, when I have the spare time, I am more likely to listen to records than watch movies, and vice versa.

I had been getting in the habit of buying a new release each week of movies that I didn't get the chance to see in the theatre.  But for one reason or another they began to pile up unwatched.  I've been trying to resist lately and just buy classics or what I deem as "must-haves" (like THE INCREDIBLES.)

What I really need to do is join Netflix.

At the time she kept saying she didn’t really sing.

Yes, I remember that she said that, too, but I suspect it was so folks wouldn't get their hopes up that she had regained her singing voice to THE SOUND OF MUSIC dimensions.

When she began the song in the film, it was just talking in cadence, a la Rex Harrison, but after a line or two of that, she did begin singing and she sang pretty much the rest of the number.

Dan (the Man)'s Do's and Don'ts for Future Christmas Recordings:

#1:  Do keep it upbeat, people!  No one wants to hear you sing "Frosty the Snowman" like you've just broke up with your boyfriend.

#2:  Don't include "Twas The Night Before Christmas".  It's not a song.  I'll read the book.

#3:  If your name is Roberta Flack, don't sing "The Twelve Days of Christmas".

#4:  It is more than likely that the new Christmas love song you wrote will NOT become a new classic.

#5:  Resist the urge to do a duet with Bing Crosby, Dean Martin or Rosemary Clooney.  They're dead.

#6:  Listen to Perry Como Sings Merry Christmas Songs for inspiration (even though he ignored #2.)

#7:  Scrap your plans for another A Charlie Brown Christmas tribute recording.  It's been done one time too many.

#8:  Be reverent and be whimsical.  The Roches do a good job at this on their We Three Kings recording.

#9:  "My Favorite Things" is a lovely song but it's not about Christmas.

#10:  Fourteen songs are plenty enough on a Christmas CD.

First I finished THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD. There were a couple of speckles on the print and a quick little scratch. I noticed a couple of places where it was obvious the three Technicolor strips were misregistering, but it only lasted very, very briefly each time, nothing like extended moments in THE PRIVATES LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX.

Next, in an effort to get most of the DVR watched and cleared, I watched POLYESTER. Not one of John Waters' more inspired efforts, this social satire just wasn't very funny. The Odorama numbers which were superimposed on the film in the theater were not on the print that the IFC showed, so one had to guess the smells as Divine started sniffing around.

Tab Hunter did look good, but he was affecting some kind of weird hick accent that made him sound as amateurish as many of the rest of the cast.

And then CROSSING JORDAN tonight had a couple of fairly typical cases one of which I enjoyed and one of which I didn't.

The love lives of the major players are still being puttered around with. On most procedurals, if they do delve into the romantic lives of the players, you can usually count of love affairs not lasting more than four or five episodes. Looks like some of the romances are at the breaking point in this show.

Happy happy birthday to Ginny.  Sorry if I missed the day in terms of Eastern time, but perhaps it's still your birthday where you are.

It's been a very busy day, I'm just getting to the computer. I started with sleeping in and then catching the 1:00pm showing of Syriana. Then home to start working on some Christmas presents.  I found a tape I made when I was a child of my Grandfather speaking and singing in Dutch. He died about 1974 I think, anyway I made copies for family members.

DR Jane,  What did you think of Syriana?

The one you can't forget?  Does it include people you literally just can't forget because you see them all the time?  One person I dated in my twenties has gone on to be something of a local TV personality, so it's not like I think of it with any regret, it's just that when someone's always popping up on TV, you just can't forget that person simply because that person is always there.

If you mean people you can't forget because you still have romantic feelings for them , then there's no one besides my current DP in that catgeory.

Back from belated birthday dinner.  I don't even remember the name of the restaurant, but I believe it's the same location as the late lamented Maison Gerard, near Universal Studios.  The salad was very good.  I ordered cabonara, as is my wont, but while the noodles, cream and butter were fine, the pancetta was all fat and barely cooked and it skeeved me.   Dessert was a vanilla custard with chocolate and caramel sauces, and it was quite good.

Hmm, the one you can't forget.  Well, no one in the romantic longing one who got away type way.  And lately it seems the people I wonder what ever happened to seem to show up in my life again.  It happened with 3 different people in the past year. Pretty cool actually.

George-
Harumph retracted. I misread your post, and when I read this:

"Okay, I'll wait until the new notes are up and today is locked."

I thought you were waiting till then to post an image. Now I have some mail to look forward to!!

Well, I'm still not smoking but I'm gaining weight and it's driving me crazy.....of course the holidays aren't exactly the best time to diet, so I just thought I'd let it be known I'm not happy I had to bring up the fat clothes today

Let me say it again - WHEW!

;)

The first weekend of Damn Yankees went very well.  The show is really coming together nicely, and the audience response has been wonderful.  -And we were actually sold out for today's matinee, and all but the Family Boxes were sold for the evening show.

We still have a day call on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, but, hopefully, those will not be too involved.  Just going over a few minor places.

And now...

Dan, I object (fervently but gently), to Rule #2

I enjoy Johnny Cole with the Robert Evans Chorus and Orchestra's version of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," which is on an LP I've had since childhood.

The song is based on a poem, rather than a book, and if you are objecting to people putting music to poems, why many a great and romantic song would be lost!

Once I got home, I started preparing the mail I need to send out tomorrow.  I wanted to get it all done tonight so that I can just drop it off at the post office tomorrow morning on my way down to Richmond.  -And save me some time in the morning too for a few extra winks - which I'm sure I'll be taking advantage of.

Momentarily, I will be folding the laundry that I washed and dried two days ago... Finally!  And I also have some picking up and straightening up to do before heading to bed.

And, then, well... Bed.  Sleep.  Rest.

:)

Hey Jose-
Up until like 9pm est, we were still on page 3, so we've really kicked it into high gear here.

I do have to admit that I have yet to read today's Notes and Posts... Mea culpa... But I hope to catch up on those sometime this week.  I'd say tomorrow, but I will most likely be errant and truant for most of tomorrow since I will be trekking down to Richmond for the day.  I need to dig some stuff out of my storage unit - as well as checking into arrangements into getting all that stuff moved up and out come the New Year(!).  I also plan to take care of some Christmas shopping while I'm down there, and I'm catching up with various and sundried people throughout the day.  Should be a fun day.

I do plan to head back tomorrow night around 9:00, so I may do some late-night catching up once I return to Fairfax. And then it's rehearsal at 11:30 on Tuesday. *And it's photo call too!  They usually let staff bring their own cameras too, so I'll try my best to snap a few pics of the cast.

The movie DRAW! with Kirk Douglas was on Fox Movie channel this evening, and I saw just enough of it to wonder if it was shot for $5 in the same number of days, so cheap did it appear. But I forgot that Fox sometimes tosses in old TV movies into the mix. Not enough feature films in the Fox film library?

Well, time for me to get my act together so that I head on road tomorrow morning...

VIBES to those who need them.

OH!  And Arena Stage is auctioning (via e-Bay) off some interesting Damn Yankees "items" as part of their fundraising efforts.  www.arenastage.org

Well...

Goodnight.

FOX MOVIE CLASSICS
I enjoy that channel, but lately I am fearing for its future. Someone is beginning to tinker with what has been a pretty solid outlet for uninterrupted and well-chosen movies. On Friday nights now, they show one movie three times in a row. Who needs that?

The Fox logo is now appearing more often during movies, something they almost never did before.

Small signs, yes. But the road to AMC and TNT, once good movie outlets turned into some boorish soul's marketing nightmare, is a short one.

Boy, I never would have thought we'd end up with this many postings from the way the day went.  Who knew?

Cabonara is very simple really - spaghetti noodles (or fettucine or whatever), butter, cream, onions, parmesan cheese, and pancetta (hopefully cooked and with NO FATTY BITS).  When done correctly, absolutely fantabulous.

Title: Re:WHAT'S MY SEGUE?

Rodzinski - No, it's not anyone that famous, certainly not a celebrity like that, just someone who's on a local program fairly regularly and I always seem to see him and hear his name.

(Again, I emphasize no regrets about it not having gone on any longer than it did.  It's just, well, odd to see someone you knew that way long ago on TV all the time.)

But I'm not mentioning the name because I'm not sure the person is "out" to the general public.
