Title: I FEEL A SPIEL COMING ON

Well, you've read the notes, you've been spieled, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're purchasing Kritzerland CDs and copies of Rewind right now, then they'll be on their way.

Good morning, all!  It's nearly 8:00 am and I'm amazed to see myself so far up at the beginning of the posts!  I have a brief post office trip this morning. the conclusion of the Act One critical notes on Toyland, a bit of shopping before my music librarian's monthly dinner tonight.

TOD:  most memorable Christmas gift?  A Siamese kitten around 1962.  She lived for around 16 years and I was quite fnd of her.

Awww...DR Michael S, PM me your address and I'll send you a Christmas gift.

My best Christmas gift ever was the Mickey Mouse phone my parents gave me when I was in high school.  It's not only that it was an expensive item (and phones were expensive to buy back then!), but that it was an acknowledgement and appreciation of my silly side from my parents.  It really meant a lot to me.  And I still have it and it still works!

Today we also celebrate St. Jose, the patron of harvests.

I always knew there was someone to blame for that.

I didn't write the following.  It's something that der B sent me, but I'm not exactly clear where he got it.

Quote
The "winter program" at Ridgeway Elementary School in Dodgeville, Wis., changed the lyrics of the Christmas carol "Silent Night" to the more inclusive "Cold in the Night." ("Cold in the night, no one in sight, winter winds whirl and bite.") After this success, the program's next step will obviously be:
(a) Changing "O Holy Night" to "Uh-oh! Wholly night!" a song about a lunar eclipse.
(b) Singing "O Little Town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania."
(c) A song celebrating the comeback of the American auto industry, "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Ford."
(d) A ditty about hoping for snow at the Panama Canal, "I'm dreaming of a white isthmus."

More from the same source.

Quote
Some schools have ruled that red and green cookies cannot be brought into class in December because the color combination strongly suggests the divisive sectarian feast day of Christmas. Therefore:
(a) Red cookies may be brought to school. Green ones too. But, please, not on the same day.
(b) A fruit bowl containing just pears and cherries is a serious constitutional matter and should be reported immediately to the ACLU, care of the Christmas erasure desk.
(c) In December, the San Francisco 49ers may not be shown playing the New York Jets, except on black-and-white TV sets.
(d) All traffic lights must be turned off until Jan. 1.

Multiple choice questions were always my favorite when I was in school.  Sometimes the teacher would add a choice that had some real humor, just to throw people off (or let him/her know how far we were in the test, by the timing of the laughter).

Quote
The three wise men in the Nativity scene are objectionable because:
(a) They fail the multicultural test. Though one is black, neither of the other two is a disabled lesbian, wiccan or vegan.
(b) "Wise Men" should be "Persons of Wisdom."
(c) Describing the first people to come to see Jesus as "wise" implies that idiots can't become Christians, which experience tells us is just not so.

Post by: S. Woody White on December 13, 2005, 06:49:59 AM
I also love cross-reverences.

Quote
Christians believe Jesus came down to Earth and made himself human in order to encourage:
(a) Consumer confidence
(b) Season's greetings
(c) A festive period between bowl games
(d) His birth scene to be surrounded by plastic reindeer, elves and court-pleasing woodland creatures
(e) Frenzied end-of-year gift giving
(f) Religious songs that are easily converted into weather songs in Wisconsin
(g) The ACLU Christmas-erasure desk

All right, one more:

Quote
Before backing down and permitting a full Nativity scene, a public library in Memphis agreed to allow the scene, but only if the baby Jesus, Joseph, Mary and the wise men were removed. This left a shepherd boy and some farm animals. Next year the library will accept a Nativity scene only if it consists of:
(a) A shepherd boy and some chickens
(b) A shepherd boy and some ferrets
(c) A shepherd boy explaining that the head librarian in Memphis thinks with a brain that may or may not be the result of Intelligent Design.

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN led the Golden Globe nominations with 7 nominations. THE PRODUCERS got four nods including Best Picture, Best Actor (Nathan Lane), Supporting Actor (Will Ferrell), and Best Song.

Steven Spielberg got a Best Director nomination for MUNICH, but the film was not nominated for Best Drama nor did Eric Bana get a Best Actor nomination.

George Clooney got three personal nominations: Best Director for GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK, Best Supporting Actor for SYRIANA, and Best Screenplay.

I think I mentioned this before, but the Christmas present I most remember was a Robby the Robot mechanical man that talked and moved with a hand crank. I LOVED that gift, and I remember having to go to some Christmas gathering the year I got it and not wanting to go because I wanted to stay home and play with Robby.

Glenn Erickson usually reviews DVDs, but occasionally he'll review a current in-theater film, and he's given his seal of approval to the new KING KONG. He picks a few nits here and there but basically raves about it.

I respect his opinion more than most critics out there right now, so that might persuade me to catch it down the line. I won't be there tonight at any midnight showings, however.

A couple of Christmas presents stand out for me:  one (whose actual name I forget) by Kenner where you could build your own skyscrapers.  The kit included girders that snapped together, then building facades you clipped onto the girders.  Then circa 1965 or 1966 I got the coolest James Bond remote control racetrack set, complete with "tire slicing" hubcaps and an "oil slick" where the cars skidded going up a hill.

I'm sure that if the Weavers win, they will immediately say it was G-d's will, which of course makes sense.  As I was telling Betsy last week, I'm sure the Lord on High has set the Weavers' win as His number one priority because really everything else in creation is going so swimmingly right now.  ;)

If anyone feels like sending me low cholesterol vibes, that would be great.  About three years ago we discovered in a routine blood test that my cholesterol and triglyceride levels were at the "you should have been dead by now" stage.  But the good news is I brought them down dramatically through completely natural means (my brother-in-law was a VP at both Glaxo and Pfizer and told me to avoid the prescription cholesterol drugs if I could, since I'm still relatively young and they have long-term side effects).  But the bad news is I probably got a little lax and stopped taking some of the natural supplements and also occasionally started having "real" cheese again, and last week discovered my cholesterol was way up again.  The weird thing is my triglycerides were lower than they've ever been, which indicates that I'm at least not intaking much fat (I have enough already, LOL).  So I'm back on the plant sterol/red yeast rice regimen and have sworn off any "real" dairy for at least a few months.

Wasn't that an extremely fascinating health report?  Yes, I knew you'd think so.   ::)

Plumber is here, plumbing.  I'm here, being his drowsy chaperone.

Glenn Erickson (DVD Savant) has been far too wacky lately to take seriously.  He recently argued the subtext and brilliance of The Son of Kong in a way that would make you think he was talking about Citizen Kane.

Now, might I ask where in tarnation IS everyone.  Tis the season to be jolly, not errant and truant.

Just took a peep at the Golden Globe nominations - they are the usual - whichever and whoever has courted them is up.   How else do you account for the fact that The History of Violence is up for Best Drama, yet its director is not up for Best Director.  How else do you account for Spielberg being up for best director but his film, Munich, not being up for best drama?  Woody, as I completely expected, is up for everything because for the first time in his career he is courting the press like crazy.

On another note (C#), the movie people have once again taken over my street - I'm sure it's the same yokel up the street renting his house out to whomever he can.  They are, as you would imagine, loud, and annoying.

On another note (Db), there is some truck directly in front of my house, hammering nails into the electrical post out front - some "communications" company from Upland - I wonder what that's about?

Thus far the Kritzerland sales spike is one order.  Better than none, baby.

And where are FJL, and Ben, and Vixmom, and Ginny, and Cillaliz, and WFO, and WEL, and and and...

Which is odd because they had the No Parking signs from six am to ten pm.  Maybe they're coming back, but it doesn't look like it.

Plumber is under the house, doing something or other.  He's actually more of a handyman than a plumber, so he'll also be looking at the chimney in the den.  The Chimney In The Den - that's the title of my next novel.

DR RLP - how was the partay?

It was yummily yummilicious.  Tons of great food and good cheer.  I was almost instantly filled up despite the fact that I'd not had any of the "room full" of desserts.  I had a small sliver of my cheesecake and pie and they were "very good things."

When I went to claim my dishes/serving pieces, my foods were mostly gone.  A few servings of one of the souffles were left, along with a quarter of the cheesecake and one whole coconut pie.  As I said, there was a room full of desserts.

I claimed my pie and have put it in my freezer.

I've also cleared my calendar of the "want-to-do" things except one.  I am going to see "Brokeback Mountain" at noon pst today.

I feel better than I did yesterday, and I'm more relaxed.

It's amazing how stress can creep up on you when you aren't even aware it's happening.

Plumber has left the premises, but will be back around six to repair the broken drain - apparently I don't need to be here for that, which is good, since I won't.

He checked the chimney and says nothing seems to be wrong with it, so I may try lighting another log today to see what happens.  Maybe I didn't have the flue open all the way when I attempted it last year.

I'm still coughing like crazy, and there is still all this guck breaking up and I'm SICK OF IT!

Other than that, I feel hunky dory and also dory hunky.  The skies are bluer than blue and I am not.

We have now had two Kritzerland orders, which is better than 0 baby.  No Rewind orders, not even from those hainsies/kimlets who, for all these years, have professed to want a book with this subject matter, and yet haven't wanted to read the book - I find that a fascinating conundrum.

Tuesday greetings!

TOD - The Christmas right after my 12th birthday, my parents gave me a set of World Book encyclopedias, which I used throughout junior high, high school, college, graduate school, and adulthood until, in 1994, we traded my set in on a new set when Rob was in elementary school.  It resides on a shelf adjacent to our family dining table and has answered many mealtime questions.

The benefit that Skip did the other night went really well.  Ed Harris and Amy Madigan did a phenomenal job with a one-act musical that Skip wrote with Eduardo Machado about James Barrie and his wife reuniting after twenty years.  It was of course a thrill meeting the stars, as well as Josie de Guzman who also performed on the program.  And Toby and Dylan got to meet them as well, since the restaurant where the after-dinner took place was right across the street from our building.

I must go pick up at least one package - The Five Pennies has arrived.

The Golden Globes are a joke - they frequently nominate films that they couldn't possibly have seen - last year in particular, some movie was nominated that wasn't finished until just before its Christmas release.  Yet, they nominated it anyway.

My brother had that Girder and Panel set. He could make building so tall that he could build them around me, which he did once. I was standing inside a five-foot Sears Tower.

Add me to the voices crying out agains Tom Ewell. May he rest in peace, but I do not know how that guy got some of the choice parts he played.

He made up for his lack of acting skill by having no charisma.

Cholesterol-reduction vibes to JMK.

I remember TV commercials for margarine or something where Buddy Hackett was dressed in a shirt that said "Cholesterol." And he walked around muttering, "Nobody likes me."

Ewell had a TV show that lasted a season that I remember....I didn't even think he was funny when I was ten years old.  He lived with his wife, his mother (Mabel Albertson, I think) and his three daughters and was the sad sack woebegone husband, father, son beset by all of these females.

It was painful.

[sob] My copy of THE FIVE PENNIES has not arrived nor have I even gotten a shipping notice. I bought a bunch of Christmas presents on the same order and perhaps some had to be back ordered. At any rate, no FIVE PENNIES yet.

I guess I could listen to the soundtrack CD.

Kind of strange that Zach Braff grabbed a Golden Globe nom even though SCRUBS has yet to air this season.

Not strange at all. The Globes eligibility year is January-December, and SCRUBS aired from January through its last rerun this summer.

What I did get in the mail was THE SPY WHO LOVED ME to replace the older copy which would no longer play in any of my DVD players.

Naturally, I put it in to make sure it would play, and watched the whole thing. Looked good. I remember thinking before (when the old DVD did work) that the repurposed surround sound was very anemic, but this special edition sounded better to me, and the bass was definitely more than I remember hearing before.

Next, I put in THE DARK CORNER and watched the first 70 minutes of it. This Fox DVD looked great with just a couple of speckles and just a trace of dirt to mar what otherwise was a gorgeous black and white noir image.

One of my favorites, and what a cast! Lucy, William Bendix, Mark Stevens, Clifton Webb. They are great!

DR GINNY - we also grew up with the World Book which I thought had great pictures.  We had the Encyclopoedia Britannica as well which I loved for all of it's great HISTORICAL data.  And of course Lucille Ball hawked the EB in different magazines!

And, in one of my misguided work-from-home experiments during DS Rob's childhood, I hawked World Book.  What I learned was that I'm not cut out for a career in sales.

HaHa. Well, we never added Toto to the repertoire. Mostly, we stick to some of the less commonly heard (as in, not played to death) of the 70s.

I do a mean "Have You Never Been Mellow" by your country-woman ONJ, Tomovoz. There was a Little River Band song in the mix for awhile.

MBarnum, we've been rehearsing, so we're bound to play again sometime before 2007.

Vixdad was able to dramatically reduce his count by taking fish oil caplets.  He takes a few every day I don"t know the details but I'll try and get them for you.

Oh and BK

This may be the cause of your chimney issues::

The Chimney Song

there's something stuck up in the chimney
and i don't know what it is
but it's been there all night long.
well i waited up for santa all xmas night
but he never came and it don't seem right.
and there's something in the chimney
and it doesn't make a sound
but i wish you merry xmas.
there's something stuck up in the chimney
and i don't know what it is
but it's been there all week long.
well the dog keeps barking up the chimney flue
and we don't know what we're gonna do.
cos there's something in the chimney
and it doesn't move around
and it's been a week since xmas.
there's something stuck up in the chimney
and i don't know what it is
but it's been there all month long.
well it's jammed up tight above the fireplace
now the house smells funny such a big disgrace.
that there's something in the chimney
and it doesn't talk at all
and it's been there since last xmas.
there's something stuck up in the chimney
and i don't know what it is
but it's been there all year long.
i'll been waiting up for santa like i did last year
but my brother says he's already here...
and he's stuck up in the chimney
and he doesn't say a word
and he'll be there every xmas.
and we'll have him every xmas.

Yesterday turned out to be quite a nice all around.  I let myself sleep in a little bit, then got up and out of bed and had my breakfast.  Did some cleaning.  Just took my time.  I didn't end up leaving for Richmond until around 12:30, but I was glad I got all the stuff I got done done in the morning before I left.  -Alas, I spent a bit of time taking care of some bills...UGH!!  -But at least one of those "bills" now makes me an official member of Local 802 (New Yrk City) of the American Federation of Musicians!
Title: Re:I FEEL A SPIEL COMING ON

The drive down to Richmond was uneventful, and my time in Richmond was quite eventful.  Well, at least I ended up spending a good chunk of money.  ;)  I made my usual rounds up and down Carytown, and ended up finding some Opening Night gifts, Christmas cards, Christmas gifts, and even a little something for myself - a reproduction of a French liqueur ad.  -And I even had a discount coupon for it!

OH!  And I even found my "tacky" ornament for this year - an angel nightlight that has a "lava" body with glitter in it.  Quite stunning!

After decreasing the amount of money in my bank account, I headed over to hang out with my friend, Mike, for a while.  -And his two cats.  Mike even cooked dinner - double-cut pork chops, pan-roasted potatoes, and roasted peppers and zucchini.  Quite yummy.  It was nice to get to spend time with him.  One of his best friends died unexpectedly last week, and it was just nice to be there to keep him company.  -Mike works overnight shifts usually, so his circle of friends isn't usually available when he's free.

...And the drive back up to Fairfax was nice and easy too.  -And I managed to pull some stuff from my storage unit too.  Of course, two things I meant to pull, I forgot to pull, so... next time....  Ah, well...

Topic of Yesterday....

The aforementioned duet from Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers".  *I remember in college, the two "leading" vocal majors combined forces for their graduation recital.  And they ended with the duet.  There was not a dry eye in the house after they finished.

Those three art song duets by Gabriel Faure - the titles escape me.  *On the recording of the Complete Songs by Gerard Souzay and Elly Ameling, Ms. Ameling does the women's duets with herself. :)

"I Know Him So Well" - Chess
"What Would I Do?"- Falsettos
"Lily's Eyes" - The Secret Garden
"It's Never That Easy/I've Been Here Before" - Closer Than Ever
"What Could Be Better Than That", "Two People in Love", "With You"... - Well, heck, any of the duets from Baby.

etc., etc., etc...

I think it was our second Christmas together when Steve gave me a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer, Cobalt Blue.  He had hinted heavily that he was gonna get me one - since he was afraid I was going to buy one for myself - but it was still a wonderful surprise to find that under the tree that year.

Otherwise, my MOST favorite Christmas Gift - well, actually, Christmas Eve Gift - was/is my niece, Alexandra.  :)

I'm writing a book!

TOPIC OF THE DAY:  My two most memorable Christmas gifts were trips:

The first was in December of 1995 when I went with a local community theater group on a trip to NEW YORK!  I saw five shows in seven days (Sunset Blvd. with Betty Buckley, Victor/Victoria with Julie, Robeson with Avery Brooks, Beauty and the Beast and Swinging On a Star).  I was in the audience for "Regis and [then] Kathy Lee" (Kathy Lee was on vacation, so it was Regis and his wife Joy).  I also went to the Stonewall (it was closed, of course, but I got a picture of the front) and sang at Eighty-Eight's Piano bar (I guess that's now closed, too).  When I was there, I was served by and got an autograph from Terry White!

I also (sadly) went to Colony Records before I got to Footlight.  I paid too much for everything, but I got the London cast recordings of Children of Eden (before anyone else here had ever heard of it) and 1776!

My other most memorable Christmas gift/trip was in December 2001, a trip to London!  My niece and sister and I went (the prices were very low) specifically so that my niece could see her very favorite singing group STEPS in concert.  They're a British group whose gimmick is to have simple choreography so that all of their fans can dance along with them...and they did!  They never really made it big in the US, but my niece got their CDs from England and fell in love with them.  We saw them twice in two days (in the same venue).

We also went to Kew Gardens and walked around London quite a bit.  We took a couple of walking tours and both times our tour guide was this guy named Tom who was very nice.  We went to the Tower of London and on our own, we walked along Fleet Street to where Sweeney Todd's tonsorial parlour was supposed to be!  We also stayed in a hotel a block from South Lambeth (almost a Me and My Girl reference!).  We went into this church that had a section the back where most people can't go.  It held a big book with names of all the Americans who died in England during World War II.  Because we were Americans, one of the nuns let us go back and see it.  It was quite impressive and very moving.

We saw the first two acts of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Brendan Fraser (very nice to look at ;)), Frances O'Connor and Ned Beatty as Big Daddy.  I can't remember why we had to leave, but we did.  On other nights, we saw Starlight Express (which was going to close in January 2002) and Kiss Me, Kate with the WSMA (that's the "World's Sexiest Man Alive" in HHW lingo ;D) Brent Barrett, Marin Mazzie, Michael Berresse and Nancy Anderson.  I got pictures and autographs (but not of Brent...he hadn't left the theater by the time I had to leave.  Dammit :'( ).

When my credit cards are paid off (in just a few months!!), I really want to go back to both places...just by myself!  I should be able to save up some money fairly quickly with what I was paying on my cards.  I don't know if I actually will be able to save up some money quickly ;), but that's the plan.

Evening all!  It's been COLD here in the land of sunshine but we're making it.

I have that Vontage phone service and tried to call home like I always do at lunch time.  I kept being sent to voice mail.

I worried that something was wrong.  When I finely got home, it turned out that Mom had blown the breakers and since she can't see very well, she managed to turn most everything in the house off.  That included the phone and most important, the HEAT!

Funny that tonight of all nights my boss and I were going to go to the beauty salon to get our hair cut.  I didn't feel like going and with no way to get in touch with Mom, I told her (my boss) that I just wanted to go home tonight.  I'm so glad I did!!

Mom is fine, BTW.  She just wrapped herself in a blanket until I got home.

I have decided that I have GOT to get my Mom a cell phone.  I've just finished a web search and have decided that a Fire Fly (a kids phone) will be perfect for her.  No numbers, just two buttons that I can program with my work and cell phone numbers.

Thanks Jane but I wouldn't be to sure of that!   :D

VixMom, when/if you post anything about that fish oil, I would love to hear about it.  That's one of the meds I'm on (well sort of--I haven't taken any of my meds for over a week).

I'm bad, I know.  I ran out and just haven't bother filling any of them.  The thyroid, the BP or the cholesterol.

Good cholesterol vibes to JMK!

Wants none of that noon glow

Happy Birthday to the Calendar Man!!!

I'm here at HHW but I should be at my banking site making sure all the finances are in order before we leave on Friday. This place is more enjoyable.

We will most likely finish the bag packing tomorrow and we will have the rest of Wednesday, all of Thursday and lots of Friday to relax and get ready for the trip, at which point I will post my "Get out of bitch-slapping free" card since while there will probably be Internet cafes throughout Dublin we won't be at them enough to post with any frequency. If I get lucky and find some time (between seeing the Book of Kells and touching the Crusader's Hand at St. Michan's) I will post. We won't be able to show you anything until we return. Ant has a digital camera but without access to a computer there will be little way to show you what fun we will be having.

We are meeting a friend from Belfast on Monday the 19th. She's driving down and said if there was any place we wanted to see outside of Dublin she could drive us there. We will have to pour over the tour books and see if there is something close by.

I still have to read yesterday's posts. I read the notes but not the posts so I shall go and catch up.

Later.

Somewhere in Queenland. My nephew and his partner have just bought a home there.(Well just across the border in New South Wales) I am going to visit them in mid January.

I have mixed feelings about such activities as Swimming with Dolphins!! I appreciate the gift but believe it is NOT what the Dolphins would wish to do.

Watched two more GOOD TIMES episodes waiting until the network TV shows I wanted to watch came on.

One of the things I find really enjoyable about this show is the boisterous audience reaction. The audiences for this show REALLY got into the story and these characters. I think the studio audience for the years the show ran was probably the most invested audience in the history of TV.

And for the first time ever tonight, I watched BOSTON LEGAL. SVU was a rerun, so I thought I'd give the show a try.

Outrageous fun. The two cases were each interesting. There was a tremendous amount of humor connnected with both of these serious cases, something I wasn't expecting but I'm assuming is par for the course with this show.

I may have to continue to check this show out.

Good Evening!

Unless something totally goes wrong tomorrow night, it looks like tomorrow will be our last day rehearsal before opening on Thursday.  -We've never had day rehearsal on Opening Day/Night - it's sort of the director's "gift" to the cast, but ya' never know.  In other words, a very good show tonight.

Tomorrow is our company Christmakkuh do. We're doing our Secret Santa reveals and such, though I don't think we're really doing Secret Santa the way I remember it. I've always done it where you give little gifts throughout the week leading up to the reveal so the recipient has a chance to guess who their Santa is. We're just giving a $15 gift tomorrow and calling it a day. Oh, well...

The affair begins at 4:00 at at a bar around the corner from the office. Since we're closing early for the party, they're making us go into the office early. Merry frickin' Christmas to them, too...

Apparently our holiday bonuses will be distributed tomorrow at the party, too. Our CEO mandated "a party or a bonus - one or the other," so the VP and CFO took it upon themselves to foot the bill for the party themselves and still give us a bonus. I hate to sound greedy or ungrateful, but I sure do hope that bonus is a doozy 'cause I can't afford Christmas gifts for my family right now...
