Well, you've read the notes, the notes have boggled your mind and you are now as boggled as a boggled BK, and now it is time for you to post until the boggled cows come home.

BK, yesterday (actually, just a little while ago), you wrote:

Quote
And George, when may we expect The Yiddish Sondheim?  Steve is waiting patiently.

I got it back from Larry (my sister's boyfriend), but there's a kind of a snag.  Do you know the difference between a DVD"-"R and a DVD"+"R?  I don't.  The problem (and maybe it's not really a problem, just me wanting this to all work) is that Larry transferred "The Yiddish Sondheim" onto a DVD+R.  I put it in the DVD player that I use the most (I actually have three DVD players) and it wouldn't work at all!  It gave me an error message!  I then put that DVD+R into the player in my bedroom and it played fine, no problems.  So obviously that first player can't play the "+".  I copied it onto a DVD"-"R and that played in my first DVD player, but it wasn't widescreen, like the original!  It showed it full-frame and I couldn't scan back and forth, at all.  I then took that copied DVD-R into my bedroom player and it played perfectly fine and was widescreen, too.

So, for best results, I am going to send you both the DVD+R and the copied DVD-R.  Then, you can send both of them and Steve will more than likely get a good working copy, either way.  I'm sorry it took longer than the Alexis Smith clip, but if this is going to Mr. S himself, I just want to make sure that everything does work. ;D

Perfect sense, except I don't know the difference, unless it's that one is rerecordable media - that should have nothing to do with playback, however.

Good morning, all!  I had a lovely dinner last evening with my librarian friends from Tams-Witmark and other environs.  Charlie Harmon brought along a librarian from the Royal Opera House, a trumpeter who had studied with my friend John Wallace, hopefully soon to be Sir john, one of the great trumpeters.  After dinner, we all walked a block to see our friend Finn's new condo, and I went home, read the mail, watched LAW & ORDER SVU (repeat) and passed out.

This morning I have laundry, Act II notes for Toyland to work on, and then a dress at Carnegie Hall at 1:30.  I'll meet Mark Robinson at 7:30 and we'll attend the concert.  I will try to stop in occasionally today.

What do you think your fellow co-workers in the entertainment world most misunderstand about you?

I don't think I'm on their mind for them to misunderstanding me.  But, I can say that over the years the fact that I do more than one thing well confounds people and even annoys them - the entertainment industry loves to shoehorn people into little boxes, and I've never been one for that, probably to the detriment of my various careers.

Now, what in tarnation am I doing up at six?  And why is the jernt empty?

DR Laura, there is a picture of cake in yesterday's posting. No ice cream though.

Hello all. We are about to leave for the final day of bag packing and then it's time to get ready for the trip. I must learn more about Cardiff, I must pack, I must get a haircut, I must go to my office holiday party tomorrow evening, I must do one last load of laundry before we leave. I must call for the car service to pick us up on Friday afternoon, I must plan for a possible transit strike on Friday morning at 12:01am which may affect getting to the airport in time for check in, I must give my neighbor upstairs our departure and return dates so he can pick up our mail, I must pay two bills on-line so they will be up to date when we return and I must listen to Showtime on Radio Wales to see if I will be broadcast during the segment. I have much to do and little time in which to do it so I leave you now to return later in the day (or evening as the case may be).

I had to be at the office very early this morning for a meeting with my client and probation. Now that is over so I must get a lot of little things done while I wait until court at 4:00 pm.

We were supposed to have a snow storm last night, but it didn't get cold enough. Mostly just rain and slush - not enough for a snow day

Looking forward to THE FIVE PENNIES which I always enjoy and have since the first time I saw it.

Yes, Mr Danny Kaye did some movies that I don't enjoy - and I didn't watch his TV show very often.  But WHITE CHRISTMAS, THE COURT JESTER, THE FIVE PENNIES, and HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON are so joyful and enjoyable that all the other stuff doesn't matter.

Why, even Carroll Baker made a couple of movies I don't like.

I am so tired.  Last night  after I left the office I wen to the all night post office where I waited in line for 1/2 hour before I could finally post my various packages...$75 and some cents later  I headed over to a business Christmas partay which did have a very nice buffet  and an open bar (I had my usual two Shirley Temples  ;)) I left there at 9:40 and headed out to do some Christmas shopping... finally arriving home at 11 PM and threw in a load of laundry before hitting the hay.

Woke up at 6:30 am, moved the laundry to the dryer got my shower  and woke up the Vixter, fed her, warmed up the car (16 degrees F  out! BLECCCH  :P)  drove her to school, went Christmas shopping  and got to work at 9 am.  I am now ready to go back to bed and sleep!

DVD-R and DVD+R are the two most common recording media, but DVD-R is compatible with more DVD players than the + version. Both are one-time only recording discs, and they're different only by the way the information is encoded on the disc.

I agree with you completely about Danny Kaye. Though he could sometimes be too silly and push too hard for effects, there is no fault I can find with his work in WHITE CHRISTMAS, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, THE COURT JESTER, and THE FIVE PENNIES. And I'll admit that I haven't seen all of his films.

Yes, ALIAS has its last new episode for awhile tonight, and a few other shows have new episodes, but not LOST or VERONICA MARS. No worry about VERONICA here. It's preempted for a local broadcast of an NBA game. I assume they're show it at 1 or 2 a.m. like the last time they did this. Of course, the station doesn't have equipment to tape it in high definition, so it's only the standard definition version that gets shown. Bah!

Our local film critic gave the new KING KONG only two stars (out of four). Thought the special effects were amazingly well done, but found the running time ridiculously long (same story as the 100 minute original stretched to gargantuan proportions) and the characters (except for Kong) cardboard and one-dimensional.

I saw "Brokeback Mountain" yesterday.

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are amazing.

The photography is wonderful.

The location is stunning.

The story is great.

It packed its strongest punch for me with Ennis Del Mar's closing line:

"Jack....I swear...."

It was not overtly gutwrenching as I thought it would be.  In many ways, it was much more.

I haven't let myself think too long and hard about it.  But it's not easily summed up, emotionally.

It's one of those so-real-it's-surreal experiences, for me at any rate, and I'm of an age (and from a time) when the issues in this film were forbidding and unalterably life-shattering.

One of the critics, possibly Variety's, put it perfectly (and I'm paraphrasing):  It has an ache at its center!

I'll be thinking on this one for quite a while.

I love it when the semester ends. But why do they have to ruin it by making me take final exams? Next is my final for the dreaded Dr. C. Part of me just wants to go in there and get it over with so I never have to see him ever again, but the other part of me is a chicken and just doesn't wanna.

Dr. C's class is on the postcolonial novel, and if anyone knows what that means, now would be the time to tell me. Apparently, it has to do with a bunch of people griping and writing stories without plots but with lots of sex.

Since it's late spring and almost summer where our Tomovoz lives, I suggest the following be served for his birthday!

Quote
Pineapple Upside-Down Cake
Recipe courtesy Gourmet Magazine

Recipe Summary
Difficulty: Medium
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Yield: 8 servings

For topping:
1/2 medium pineapple, peeled, quartered lengthwise, and cored
3/4 stick unsalted butter
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar

For batter:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 to 3 teaspoons ground cardamom
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 stick unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon dark rum
1/2 cup unsweetened pineapple juice
2 tablespoons dark rum, for sprinkling over cake

Special equipment: a well-seasoned 10-inch cast-iron skillet

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Topping:
Cut pineapple crosswise into 3/8-inch-thick pieces. Melt butter in skillet. Add brown sugar and simmer over moderate heat, stirring, 4 minutes. Remove from heat. Arrange pineapple on top of sugar mixture in concentric circles, overlapping pieces slightly.

Batter:
Sift together flour, cardamom, baking powder, and salt. Beat butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, then gradually beat in granulated sugar. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla and rum. Add 1/2 of the flour mixture and beat on low speed just until blended. Beat in pineapple juice, then add remaining flour mixture, beating just until blended. (Batter may appear slightly curdled.)
Spoon batter over pineapple topping and spread evenly. Bake cake in middle of oven until golden and a tester comes out clean, about 45 minutes. Let cake stand in skillet 5 minutes. Invert a plate over skillet and invert cake onto plate (keeping plate and skillet firmly pressed together). Replace any pineapple stuck to bottom of skillet. Sprinkle rum over cake and cool on plate on a rack.

Serve cake just warm or at room temperature.

Cooks' notes:
• Some of the food editors found 3 teaspoons of cardamom to be too much, but others loved the intense flavor.
• Cake may be made 1 day ahead and chilled, covered. Bring to room temperature before serving.

...Dr. C's class is on the postcolonial novel, and if anyone knows what that means, now would be the time to tell me. Apparently, it has to do with a bunch of people griping and writing stories without plots but with lots of sex...
In other words, the postcolonial novel is much like the postmodern novel, but the cast of characters dress funny.

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers.

I believe I have finished my Christmas shopping.

Son gets a Starbucks card. No surprise for him, but he will use it.

DR Sandra gets memories: We are going to Las Vegas to see Plaid Tidings next week.

Sis gets a donation in her name to the Red Cross.

DH's nieces and nephews get a llama donated in their names to Heifer Project. Said llama will be used as a pack animal and hair from it will be woven into warm clothing. It will go to someone in the world who needs it.

I love Heifer project.  One year our Sunday School managed to raise enough for one cow, 2 pigs and some chickens

NOW my question for ASK BK day - what is the difference between and screenplay and a scenario?

A scenario usually denotes the "story" - the screenplay is the finished, fleshed out, dialogued script.

I don't like to knock the other guy's work, so it's a hard question.  There are certain things like Bounce, where I know I would have done it differently, and had it sound differently - but that's just taste.  Of course, I would love to have done the original Follies, complete and with great sound balances.

DVD-R and DVD+R are the two most common recording media, but DVD-R is compatible with more DVD players than the + version. Both are one-time only recording discs, and they're different only by the way the information is encoded on the disc.

FInished the first disc of Season 2 of GOOD TIMES. Funny and a little pognant too to know Esther Rolle is no longer with us.

Then I put in THE GLENN MILLER STORY.

I'm glad to have it on DVD, but the transfer is a disappointment. Far too grainy in spots with color that fluctuates during shots from dim to bright and weird surround processing that puts ambient sound cues in weird spots like front right or the surrounds whether they're appropriate to be there or not.

The music sounds great, but overall I think Universal missed the boat on this one.

Here it is:  The Jack Randall Earles King Kong Report:

"Kong is climbing the Empire State Building.  That is all."

I wish they had used that line from the original.

Okay....here goes.

Good performances by Jack Black, Naomi Watts, and Colin Hanks.  The CGI is amazing.

Adrien Brody has a hellacious honker that is VERY distracting and he must play in film biographies of either Jimmy Durante or Danny Thomas or BOTH very soon now.

Other performances are also good.

The film is TOO long....just too long.  Over three hours....three hours and fifteen minutes including the coming attractions that I was subjected to.

Once we get to New York everything works.  Well worth seeing, but it's a long drink of water!

THE MUSIC OF THIS FILM IS A COMPLETE FAILURE.  The best part musically are a few samples of Max Steiner's score.  Kong doesn't have a BIG theme to match the 3-note descending theme that he had in '33 (it is sampled ONCE) - and the rest is pretty but doesn't seem to fit the film.  Too bad.

This is a film to see once, and MAYBE buy the DVD on sale.....no need to see it more than once at the theatre.

The two other people in the theatre for the 1 pm showing seemed to enjoy it as much as I did.

Just read the VARIETY review of this Sunday's ONCE UPON A MATTRESS. As we suspected, a misfire all around.

I'm sure I'll watch since not many musicals make it to be big or small screen any more, but having done this show myself, I have a great fondness for it and am sad they wasted this golden opportunity to do it right.

Here's the VARIETY pic. Sorry for the quality; I tried resizing it larger and, of course, it loses resolution when you do that.

BK when you write as screen play does it include "stage directions" or is that something that only a director adds?

Yes, I try to make it as visual as possible, so that the reader can "picture" the movie as they're reading it.  Smart directors will just take what they like from the writer's stage directions if they're top-notch and really clever and visual.  Dumb directors (most working directors today) will completely ignore them and do their own thing.

Over 3 hours long! Boy, even this Bollywood Boy will have a difficult time with that!

She's a 30's gal, MBARNUM, Naomi Watts' performance is terrific.  There is a nod here and there to something more modern, but it isn't too jarring.

Another thing about the music.....the tiddly wink music that is played for the introduction to the New York performance is awful.  And of course the conductor and musicians seem to playing something completely different than what we're hearing.  Maybe they have Howard Shore's music on their stands!

But this is the sequence that THEN cribs verbatim from Steiner - only goes to show how threadbare and WRONG this score is.

Sometimes, it's hard to explain exactly why a person becomes fond of something that leaves another cold. I can't explain it either. I just know that it makes me laugh.

I suspect we all have TV shows and films that the world judges lame or lousy which we just love (for any number of reasons).

I am listening to a version of the song SHRIMP BOATS by a singer named Dick Beaver. I just don't think that Dick Beaver is a good name for anyone.

Neither is Nellie Manley.

There was an executive in my home town, Dick Head.  Sad.

I'm back from the dress at  Carnegie and now I must prepare for the concert.  I'm watching a PBS documentary "Once Upon a Sleighride," about Leroy Anderson.  The documentaryi includes an Ed Sullivan clip of Pat Stanley and Kelly Brown in the de Mille  "Lady in Waiting" ballet from GOLDILOCKS.  Also, Elaine Stritch discusses the show briefly (too briefly) with Robert Whitehead, but she isn't as sardonic in her comments as she was to me about it.

There was a Dick Beavers on the recording of "Pal Joey" with Jane Froman.

And there was a Richard Beavers (aka Bruce Langley) who appeared in "Easter Parade" (singing "The Girl I Love" number).

I've always been particularly wary of members of the Lipschitz family.

I've always worried I'd meet one named Kissy.

I'm expecting nothing at all for Christmas, therefore anything that shows up will be a complete surprise.  This hasn't been a big year for presents - only one for my birthday, really, and a lovely surprise from FJL and Skip yesterday.

Larry - Believe it or not, the head of a department at a place I worked in the 1980's was Dick Genetelli.  (Now if your last name is Genetelli, why would you name your child Dick?)

It's been a strange year gift-wise with the way the holidays have fallen, with Hannukah falling mostly between Christmas and New Year's.  Our office holiday party is this Friday, more than a full week before there's actually any holiday.  But Skip and I took our first walk down Macy's holiday lane last Saturday night and sort of declared that the beginning of our holiday season.

So glad the tchochke got to you so fast, Bruce.   Hooray for FedEx!

DRJason, this sounds like a story my father, who turned 84 today, used to tell us about growing up in Appalachia in the late 1920s.  Did you have to walk to work today through six feet of snow with frozen toes?

LOL, My mother used to tell a similar story about walking miles throught he snow to go to school. Problem was she only lived about 6-8 blocks from the school. We used to tease her about what route she would take to get home and back

Ben, have a great trip.  We very much enjoyed a day tour from Dublin to the country.  One of the stops was at the ruins of a monastery on a lake.  The opening scenes of BRAVEHEART were filmed at the lake.

Don’t forget to check out Thornton’s, if you can find it.  Be sure to try the special toffee and, my favorite, the mint toffee.  Every day I went to the one in old town & purchased toffee and humbugs.  I would love to know if they still sell humbugs.  Following are two Dublin locations from their website:
Thorntons, Dublin-Jervis
Unit 1B Jervis Shopping Ctr
Lower Abbey Street

Today has been a pretty hectic day at work.  We had our gift exchange (I got a box with 11 different puzzles!) and the person who got what I gave (9 small jars of different Knott's Berry Farm jellies, jams and preserves) gave it back because she doesn't like things like that (which I do...that's why I got it :)).  But since she loves puzzles (and I don't), we're trading!  But it's under the table because another woman who collects puzzles asked first if we could trade and I didn't want what she got...a couple of books and something else...I don't know what.  So, don't tell anyone! ;)

The lunch itself was wonderful, as always.  I brought home-baked (from a store-bought dough) Nestle's Toll House chocolate chip cookies and some Clementine tangerines for the morning break, and some Smokies for the actual lunch part.  There was just a butt-load of food and most people (including me) loaded their butts full! :D

And right now, I'm leaving to go see a local production of Children of Eden.  It should be pretty good.  I won't be back until late (it is a long show), so...Laters!

DRLaura, nice presents.  Today we received a delivery from Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, Michigan full of goodies for Bryan, and a few for us.

Tomovoz, sweet photos of the bears.

MBarnum SCRIMP BOATS is on my Jo Stafford CD Keith gave me for my birthday.  He also ordered her Christmas CD which never arrived and won’t until after the holidays so he cancelled it.

Since I had had that trouble with my old copy of THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, I thought maybe I'd better check some of the other Bond films that I bought around the same time.

So, I picked out MOONRAKER. Never been one of my favorites but thankfully the disc played just fine. Looked and sounded very, very good. There is still 30 minutes or so to go with it.

Then, it was time for tonight's ALIAS.

spoilers - - -

1. One of the biggest mistakes they ever made (apart from letting the show run two or three years too long) was the decision to rid themselves of Michael Vartan. Even now with what we know about their messy romance and break-up, the two have incredible chemistry on-screen together. Every scene with him tonight only reinforced in my mind that he was the true unheralded backbone of this show.

2. What a shock when the identity of the person behind the glass was revealed! Wow!

Here's what I don't understand about KING KONG. On the TV, the effects look horrendous, just cartoonish like every other CGI movie (to my eyes anyway). So are these effects that improve on the big screen? People are raving about them, but it is hard to imagine from what I've seen.

GOOD TIMES:
My opinion lies omewhere between MBarnum and Matt H.

They've been showing marathons on TVLand, so I tuned in and watched a few for old times' sake. They started out enjoyable, then really started to grate on me a bit.

The issues good and bad:
What is done well is conveying the inside of a slum apartment and the lifestyle within. I think it was important for me to see that as a youngster living in suburban (white) Chicagoland.

You have great characters with strong spirits, Michael, the younger brother, a unique kid character in TV, as this politically aware and smart kid. John Amos conveyed the father very well.

With JJ though, you have shameless mugging, even though he said some funny stuff, especially his putdowns of Thelma, it got a bit obnoxious at times. And Florida was a bit sanctimonious. And then the show never lifted out of the doldrums, like when they are finally moving and they kill off the dad. Then Moses Gunn came on to battle JJ for overacting. THEN Thelma marries a promising football player who JJ trips at their wedding causing him to blow out his knee and ruining his career...

It was like, okay, if they are going to live in poverty, that's one thing, but they kept having these near brushes with escape that turned into even worse situations.

It was a downer. And too loud. But sometimes worthwhile nonetheless.

And that's GOOD TIMES as I saw it.

Great theme, too.

DR JANE - I would recommend NARNIA without hesitation.  The original line was the one I quoted!  LOL....there was nothing that original in the new GNOK GNOK.

As for the CGI - well, DR RODZINSKI, it does look better in the theatre, but it is still obvious....but I got to thinking, it's a technical photographic effect just like stop motion photography is a technical photographic effect - so we have what we have today.  There are a couple of VERY obvious effects, but for the most part it's well done.

The finale on the Empire State Building with the airplanes is exciting (badly scored) - but dividing the Jack Driscoll character into two people (one a writer and the other an actor) really weakens the film and the relationship with Anne.

I got back from seeing Children of Eden a while ago and it was very good.  Good singers, pretty good actors (overall, the chorus was not bad...not incredibly fabulous, but not bad).  I'm not spiritual at all, but I love the music and performed "In the Beginning" in an AIDS benefit several years ago.  Quite powerful and touching.
