Well, you've read the notes, you've intuited the point of the notes, the notes have intuited the point of you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're on the lam from Harold Angels aka The Linguini Killer.

Good morning, all!  Another day of cleaning house, laundry, a bit of banking, and perhaps some toyland notes.  I was feeling puny and earachy last night, so I was in bed by 10 pm, and I got up at 5:30 to learn where things stood on the strike, which is still on.  Today should be interesting, though, because people are being summoned to court and the TWA has now put a commercial on television asking the workers to return with no (or few) consequences.

DRJason, have a safe trip!  Here's my thanks to the anonymous DR helping you out.

TOD:
  Spamalot
  Two Gentlemen of Verona
  Rent (the show,  Again!)
Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire
  Transamerica
  Brokeback Mountain
  Pride & Prejudice
  The Wedding Crashers
  The Beat My Heart Skipped

Sorry I haven't been able to post. I did try to get on here yesterday morning, but the site was down.

It is sad but I am the healthiest one in my family.  Actually i'm quite a bit better. My throat has stopped hurting and it is only slightly scratchy at night.

Anyhow I had to take my sister (who is sick) to the doctors on Tuesday. And then yesterday I had to take her 3 month old baby to the doctor. Originally it was for a slight eye infection (of course her regular doc is closed for the holidays).  But she ended up having to get meds for a nose problem as well.

So I had to find them a doctor!  The place I wanted to go had to register babies first. But you could only register them after 2pm. But by then all the appointments would be gone.  So we ended up registering her when we got home (in case she needs more care). And we went to the clinic.  They said they take babies first. But of course when we got there they were disorganized.  First trip to talk to the nurse got her file upgraded. Second trip up got them a room to breastfeed.  And the strange part is that the nurse put the baby's file in the room and the doc saw her right away!

Very odd that they are telling people on the phone that babies are given priority. Yet when he you get there the nurses don't do it! :)

By the by, according to local news, the MTA and Mr. Tussaint are currently negotiating in Manhattan, which is odd as he is due in court in Brooklyn in 6 minutes. I'd like to know how he thinks he'll get to court without his trains running!

Anyway...sounds like they're trying to resolve it finally. We'll see what happens...keep your fingers crossed!

For some odd reason, I've been humming the opening lines of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" to myself, except I keep hearing the "In betwixed, in between"  line of Styne's trunk song.  Anyone know what the rest of the original lyrics were?

The most entertaining show for me this year was THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. It was my favorite of the four shows we saw this summer. I also loved SPAMALOT and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.

Closer to home, I saw the national tour of HAIRSPRAY which was superb, a local production of SEUSSICAL which was very entertaining, and a local production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS which I also enjoyed very much.

On the movie front, my favorite film of the year so far has been CAPOTE. For a huge budget film, I also loved HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE and BATMAN BEGINS. RENT was a pleasant surprise and I thouoght GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK was outstanding (and it features some of the footage bk wrote about in the notes today; it was not reenacted by other actors but the actual footage from the Army-McCarthy hearings).

The state mediation has suggested the workers get their asses off the picket lines and return to work and for the negotiations to continue.  The strike may end today, but the matter has to go to the union's board for their decision.

Alright it is official.... in the interest of non-denominational celebrations I will NOT be sending Christmas cards this year... I will be sending New Year's cards...

It is a statement for peace and unity and celebration of an event we all share and should not in any way be considered an indication that I might be disorganized or behind schedule in getting my Christmas  and Hannukah cards out on time

So, is the union being charged one million a day?  I hope no one is going to forgive that, because they are causing people too much grief.

TOD - maybe if I list everything I saw this year, it'll add up to 10!  In chronological order:

La Cage aux Folles (NYC)
Jewish Thighs on Broadway (NYC)
Mamma Mia (Indianapolis)
The Producers (Dayton)
The Lion King (Chicago)
Anything Goes (Middletown High School)
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Cincinnati)
My Fair Lady (Dayton)
Walking Down Broadway (NYC)
Ten Tenors (Dayton)
The Full Monty (Dayton)

Oh, it's 11!  That's more live theater than I'd seen in one year in a very long time

I saw very few live shows and concerts this year.  The best of them was Dame Edna: Back With A Vengeance.

On my worst list, the awful production of City of Angels I saw in North Hollywood.

I also saw The Drowsy Chaperone, but while I enjoyed it, it wouldn't make a "best" list.  Saw everything at the Pasadena Playhouse, but none of it would make a "best" list.

I suppose I could put Mr. Kevin Spirtas' show on my best list, but that would be unseemly.

The transit strike is apparently at an end, pending ratification which, of course, will happen.  My only question is whether the union will be forgiven its fines along with the workers who striked being forgiven their fines.  Given the grief they caused people, and the illegality of the strike, I would hope that those fines will NOT be forgiven - otherwise, a) they learn nothing, and b) other unions will follow suit and have illegal strikes.

Top shows that I've seen this past year:

La Cage Aux Folles (Capital Playhouse, Olympia)
City of Angels (Capital Playhouse, Olympia)
Miss Saigon (Fifth Avenue, Seattle)

I worked backstage for a touring production of The Full Monty, so I didn't actually see it (or anything ;)), but it was fun working on it.

Stephen Schwartz, Debbie Gravitte and Scott Coulter all performed together and I got to see their!  Fabulous!

Melissa Manchester in concert was also a wonderful evening.

Okay, that's six.

"The Chronicles of Narnia:  The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" is the only movie that I can remember that I loved.

That's seven...and that's all for now. :)

I did find time while scarfing down a salad this afternoon to watch the first episode on the First Season DVD set of CSI: NY. During the first season of this show, the producers desaturated the color from the show to give the program a gritty, morose reality. In terms of tone, it certainly worked, but the show's ebbing popularity during its first season convinced them that the show was too much of a downer.

This season has seen the hues become more vibrant (not to match the Las Vegas or Miami counterparts, of course, but definitely brighter and more colorful). And the ratings have been much better this season as a result.

I've been lucky that I can zip back home for a couple of hours between bouts of travel around town. Perhaps others stay out all day until their errands/work are finished.

At any rate, I still have an hour or so before I have to think about packing up the car with the gifts for this evening and heading out.

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from the Green Room!

...I did manage to get out of bed "early" today in order to get my workout in this morning.  Alas, since there were a few things I had to take care of after my workout - and before my shower - namely paying some bills online - I ended up greeting my friend, Justin, at the door in my underwear.  Rest assured, it was all very innocent.  Kind of comic actually.  So, while Justin watched the final hour of "The Today Show", I took my shower, got dressed, and then we headed out to breakfast at the Silver Diner nearby.

Breakfast was good - eggs, bacon, etc.  -And The Silver Diner now offers a substitution of strawberries with fat-free cinnamon sour cream for their hash browns and biscuit, so that's what I had with my eggs.

Justin has applied for a job at Arena Stage, and since I had to go in for understudy rehearsal today, he tagged along with me for a little bit of a tour and meet and greet.  It was sort of like a job pre-interview.  I'm hoping he gets the job, and he really wants to work here too.

Then after he went on his merry, marry, mary way - he was flying back home to Tennessee this afternoon - it was time for the rehearsal...

The understudy rehearsal went very well.  It was our first understudy rehearsal, and they were all pretty much on top of all their lines, blocking, music and lyrics.  We were able to basically run the show in real time.

The highlight of the day was when we ran "The Game".  The male swing, Sean, covers all the baseball players, so, when it came time to run "The Game", he played and sang all the parts.  It was a virtual tour-de-force.

Then after some notes from the stage manager, we did some detail work on the music and choreography.  And that was that.

We'll be having another understudy rehearsal next Wednesday along with a brush-up rehearsal right after that with the full company.  And, then, hopefully, that will be it until we have the put-in rehearsal for Sean in mid-January.  -Alas, we'll be losing one of our ensemble men to the tour of Spamalot.  But, Sean is more then up to the task.  -And then we hope and hope that no one else gets sick or injured for the rest of the run.

*Normally, we'd be having understudy rehearsal each week - five to ten hours each week.  Well, since everyone was so on top of things, the stage manager has just decided to only have rehearsals on an as needed, as requested basis.  HOO and RAY!

Greetings from home!  Left work at 4pm today - everybody was crabby there - and am now home for Christmas cocooning with my family until noon next Wednesday.  When I arrived, our house smelled wonderful with a beef stew DH Richard is making for dinner and Kiri te Kanawa is singing carols on the iMac.  Much better than a crabby library.

I actually began thinking of posting around 9:30 a.m. est, but my mom suggested a shopping trip to get me shoes, shoes, shoes.

And we got shoes.

This afternoon, I watched "Jane Eyre" on the Fox Movie Channel.  Quite an atmospheric and wonderful film.

My mom has finally caught up on her soaps (Young and Restless and Bold and Beautiful) which she taped while we were out, and which she delayed her viewing of until I could watch "Jane Eyre."

There is always something going on, somewhere to go or something to do.  None of it urgent, consequential or essential, as those things go.

But...busy, busy, busy.

Topic of the Day...

In no particular order - well, it's the order that I'm remembering things...

"Brokeback Mountain"
The Color Purple
Sweeney Todd
See What I Wanna See
On the Razzle
- Up at Williamstown
"Millions"

...And a couple of other shows and movies I know I'm forgetting at this point and time.

I hope everyone who has ever gotten sick-to-death of a particular song can appreciate what I'm saying...I am so tired of "Mary, Did You Know" -- hearing it, hearing about it, and hearing "Mary" pronounced "MAY-ree".

TOD:

"Irving Berlin's 'White Christmas'" (times 10)

That's the only theatrical event of my year, thus far.

Movie: "Brokeback Mountain" and "War of the Worlds" are the only two films I've seen in a theater this year.  Both are stunners, IMO.

DVDs: The Astaire-Rogers box set and the complete "The Thin Man" box set are my favorites of the year.

My mom, my aunt and I played two games of "Super Scrabble" last night.

That's the one with a bigger board, greater point values (up to quadruple word value), and 200 letter tiles.  It took us about 3 1/2 hours to play two games.

Most enjoyable.

OH!

And today was also the Arena Stage Christmas Party.  It was going on while we had understudy rehearsal.  Our stage manager graciously fixed me up a plate of food while I was playing.  And they had Thai food too!  YUMMY!  Chicken satay, Beef in Red Curry, Chicken in Yellow Curry, Tofu in Panang Curry, etc.

And then there was a table full of "naked" gingerbread men with cups of frosting, red hots, colored sugars, etc.  -And I actually ended up eating one of the them...  Well, two of them.   -Hey, I worked out this morning!

...And I'm just wondering if there will be any public backlash in the coming days on the New York City Transit...  I'm imagining the number of dirty looks that the bus drivers, train operators and booth workers will be getting over the next couple of days...  Yes, I'm sure many people will be thankful to be able to ride the trains and busses again, but I'm sure many people will be riding them just for spite.  -Or something like that.

My parents got Super Scrabble and they love it.  My sister and I got them a large lazy Susan at Costco (for Christmas) so that they don't have to lift the board to turn it around (and move all the tiles).  My sister has the regular Scrabble game and got herself one, too.  It's quite a nice and large lazy Susan.

Did my huge shopping for the partay.  All that's left to buy is fresh Parmesan cheese for the spaghetti and bread, both of which I'll pick up tomorrow night.

Reading the Jack Noseworthy spin borders on nauseating.  The director LOVED working with him and thinks he's brilliant, Jack LOVED being part of the creative process and contributing, but the character is being taken in "a different direction."  What does that MEAN?  The character is based on a character from the book - what direction could they be taking it in?  Either there were creative differences, they're downsizing the role, or someone wasn't happy.  Just say it and be done with it.

Raced me there DR George.  It is my least favourite BK album - and I love Paul Simon's work!!
For me it just did not work! But I do love the Guy Haines track and I love The Capeman's song. (But then I think the score from the show is brilliant)
Title: Re:HARK! THE HAROLD ANGELS SING

The Simon album was the most controversial I ever did (save for the Dame Edna track), but I stand by most of it.  His songs are just so peculiar to he alone and he and Garfunkel, that it's just difficult to present them any other way and have people like them.  While I dislike a few of the tracks for various reasons, I'm fond of many of them, especially Amanda McBroom's Still Crazy After All These Years, Jane Krakowski's Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover, Tami Tappan's track (can't remember the name), and Jose Llana's America, to name a few.

I, too, liked several things in The Capeman score - not all of it, but I thought there was a lot of first-rate material there.  The show, unfortunately, was just wretched.  The set was great, and the sound was the best I've ever heard in the theater (Simon brought in Roy Halee, his long-time engineer, to mic the band and figure out the blends).

Alright it is official.... in the interest of non-denominational celebrations I will NOT be sending Christmas cards this year... I will be sending New Year's cards...

It is a statement for peace and unity and celebration of an event we all share and should not in any way be considered an indication that I might be disorganized or behind schedule in getting my Christmas  and Hannukah cards out on time

;D I simply didn't get mine all out.  The main reason is I lost track of who I sent them to. Every time I set my cards and address someplace to work on them I had to move and make space for the workmen.  It just became too confusing. ::)

It's called "You've Stolen My Heart:  Songs from R. D. Burman's Bollywood" by The Kronos quartet and Asha Bhosle.  Has MBarnum heard (or even heard of) this??  I liked the few clips on amazon.com that I've listened to...so far.

DR George, I have not heard of that particular CD, but I have heard of Asha Bosle...she is one of the top Bollywood singers for the last 50 years! I believe she has been dubbing the singing voices of actresses since about 1950 or so....and she is still at it!

I thought I said this, but I probably wrote it in a confusing way.

The baby has a pediatrician. I would imagine most babies have one.  But when my sis called, it turns out the doc was on vacation that week.  And she works alone (has an office in her house).  So that is why we needed backup.

One fun thing I'm already talking to Paul about is  painting the inside of the turret to look like the white brick of fairy tales and in an inconspicuos place to have Rapunzel with her golden hair hanging down! I would not suggest Mandalay.

Congrats on the house, DR Cillaliz.  It reminds me of stately Wayne Manor.

Wayne Manor is interesting!

No don't take the broom at all...even to the garage.

And of course MY suggestion for the name of the house is:

Dragonwyck!

Good vibes to Jason’s HHW angel.

Matt H the banks are closed on Monday.

Cillaliz, Good vibes you will soon be living in your beautiful new home with a turret.

Thank you for the info, DR Jane. I suspected as much, and I think this confirms my suspicions about postal deliveries, etc.

Great house, DR Cillaliz!!!

And I hope once you take possession and get started with decorating, we'll see some inside pictures, too.

Terrific, and I'm so happy for you!

We got a late start on the George C. Scott CHRISTMAS CAROL after dinner and present exchange, so that's why I'm so late coming on-line.

I've never seen this entire thing. Loved Roger Rees in this (he played Fred), and Edward Woodward was a good Ghost of Christmas Present.

But I always miss the music of SCROOGE even when the movies are as well done as this one was.

Among other nifty gifts I received tonight was BARBARA COOK on the BELL TELEPHONE HOUR, another DVD I resisted buying for myself and a kind friend got for me. Can't wait to watch it at some point over the next few days.

And of course my illustrious ancestor Henry IX, aka Henry the Black, Duke of Bavaria lived in Billung Castle in Saxony.  After an eventful life, he entered the monastery at Weingarten where he died and is buried.

Back from a somewhat frustrating evening and rehearsal.  Frustrations about our publicist and one of my actors who just can't seem to get out of his own way.

Has Ann caught up?  Will she leave without posting?  This seems like it will be our lowest Christmas ever in terms of views and visits and postings.

Good Morning!

I'm back from a helluva partay!  A truly joyous and festive time was had by all.  We did the whole White Elephant Gift Exchange/Steal...  And I have to say that there are some very creative people in the show - both in the gifts they bought and the ways in which they wrapped them.   My own special "touch" - a roll of pennies in the gift bag to make it feel heavier.  ;)

I was the second to last person to pick, so I decided to "steal" the pair of lottery tickets that were going around.  Alas, the last person to go made a bargain with someone else, and he took the tickets.  BUT then someone else decided to make a bargain with me, so she took the tickets and agreed to split the winnings if they turned out to be winners.  -And I ended up with a plastic snowman filled with mint chocolate m&m's.  -Are you still with me?  Well...

When all was said and done, the two scratchers were not winners.  Ah, well.  But, again, a fun time was had by all.

OH!  And the FOOD!

As soon as stepped into the door, I made the decision that this would be my holiday party food splurge.  Lasagna, eggplant parmegianno, mac n' cheese (not from a box!), beef empanadas, spinach empanadas, pizza rolls, Ro-Tel/Velveeta Dip (that was "kicked up" with jalapenos and ground beef!), a great cheese platter....  Then came the dessert side of the table: ambrosia salad, blueberry dump cake, fudge (three kinds!), pumpkin cake, brownies, almond cake, vanilla ice cream, etc., etc., etc..

So... I guess I'm doing TWO workouts tomorrow/today... And I'm fasting!

;)

*Of course, tomorrow night/tonight is the big Secret Santa party where everyone's Secret Santa will be revealed.   Ooooohh!!!  Aaaaahhhh!!!

And as for Jack Noseworthy's departure from Lestat...

:-X

But seriously, I wish him - and the rest of the company, especially Drew Sarich - well.

And on the way home from the partay, I made a stop at the 24-hour Rite-Aid and finished my Christmas shopping.  Can you say American Express Gift Cards?
