Title: THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG
Post by: bk on December 23, 2005, 12:05:21 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you're praying for Rosemary's Baby, you feel the frustration, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're off singing O Cow All Ye Faithful.

I was writing this and posted just moments after last night was locked.  Fortunately, I copied it and saved it before I tried to post:

Well, this isn't as exciting as Jose's party [that he had just described at the end of last night], but I found a little salamander (I think) in my garage tonight!  I hadn't been out there in quite a while but I needed to put a DVD into a new case (I have a whole bunch of empty DVD cases that I got from a co-worker who buys a LOT of DVDs, so she got rid of the cases and put all of her DVDs into paper sleeves because she is running out of room in her apartment).

Anyway, I opened the door into the garage and turned on the lights and right in the middle of the walk area was this little salamander-looking thing, slowly walking along the floor!  I called my sister (I'll admit that I overreacted and freaked out a bit...I never saw one up close like that!) and she came over (she just lives next door) and took it outside.  So, that was my weird moment last evening.

I'm a wimp, and I know it. (a Romanovsky and Phillips (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000008T/ref=m_art_li_5/103-0605132-8786225?v=glance&s=music) reference...does anyone know who they were??)

The other thing is that starting tonight, I'll be (yet again) house-and-cat-sitting at the house with no computer. :P And since I no longer have a housemate to watch his own cat (I kept the cat when my housemate got married and moved out because his wife is alergic...and I like the cat), I have to watch two houses with two cats for a week and a half.  I'll be house-sitting from tonight until January 2nd.  The reason that I do it is because they pay...it's always nice to get a little chunk o' change just before Christmas. ;)

Good Morning! (once again)

I think I'm finally coming down my sugar high/rush.  Whew!  Thankfully, I can sleep in a bit tomorrow morning/today.  I do want to make a run to Border's to check on a few things, but that's about it other than the show in the evening.  -In other words, it will be a good day to do laundry.  Ah, well...

As for the Friday Media Check...

Well, the pile of CDs that was sitting on my table/desk last Friday is still sitting there, so...

I haven't even played a Christmas CD yet this season.

DR Jane - Thanks - I think - for the Good Weather Travel Vibes for my trip in January.  ;)

-Frankly, I didn't even consider the weather possibilities when I booked the ticket.  However, I did make sure that if my first flight out from San Francisco was to get delayed and/or cancelled, that there were at least four other planes heading back to Dulles in the following three hours so that I would get back here on time regardless.  I'll just have to wait and see.

Could you bring your computer over to the house your watching and use dial-up connection?  Or borrow a laptop?  Or buy a laptop?  ;)

*Actually, some of those new cheapo laptops are quite nice, and come with the proper basic software programs preloaded on them.

I have cable Internet access, which would be much more difficult to set up than a cable modem, and I can't afford to buy anything like a laptop, yet.  My credit cards will be completely paid off in a few months.  Finally!!  After four years of non-stop paying and with no access to use them, I will be making some purchases shortly thereafter...I'll add a laptop to my list! ;)

Good morning, all!  The strike, so far as I know, is over, and I must hie me down to 14th Street to the recording office. make a phone call to my accountant, and if he's in, drop off a package of financial figures.  I also have a fax to send to a partner-in-crime.

My sister-in-law confirmed that Fed Ex delivered my family's gifts, and I have several things to deliver around the building, berginning with the super.  Tonight I have a partyat the home of a co-worker from Barnes & Noble, and tomorrow I sleep late.  I like that.

TOD:
CDs:  Christmas music, tons of it!
DVD:  White Christmas, Royal Ballet Nutcracker
VCR:  Cheap holiday porn (not to be confused with Cheap Christmas Trash)

Also embarrassed that I forgot Penny O's show on the ten best list. I saw something else which I cannot even remember what I saw (something on Broadway) which I didn't especially care for.

So the list again

No particular order

Avenue Q
Souvenir
Good Night and Good Luck
Capote
Spamalot
Jewish Thighs On Broadway
and
Alter Boyz (which I just remembered)

TOD - DVD: The Interpreter; CD:  all-Christmas, all-the-time; VCR: a couple of movies featuring Marge and Gower Champion.  I finished that GC book this week and kept thinking how much better it would have been had it not been a re-worked doctoral dissertation.

Good morning!

A beautiful day here and temps slated to get to near 60 today! I'm going to be out with best friend John and his kids today and we're lunching at a pizza buffet that's the kids' favorite. That will be pretty much the only food I'll have tonight, unless I have a salad tonight.

Have no idea how long we'll be out this afternoon or when I'll get back.

I read in USATODAY this morning that the Fox Movie Channel is doing a Shirley Temple marathon on Sunday, and I shall finally be able to get POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL and (hopefully) THE BLUE BIRD and STOWAWAY. The article said 20 films in the marathon, but didn't give all their titles, so I'm assuming all of those will be included. I won't burn DVDs of the ones to be released next month, but rather will make DVDs of the ones I'm not sure will ever be released (like THE BLUE BIRD).

Happily, I am at GMHC right now.  I wasn't scheduled to work today, I was going to spend the day preparing for our trip this evening.  But since the subways are now running and I haven't worked all week, I thought I would squeeze in a few hours before we go.

Happy B'day William F. Orr!

Chocolate Donuts?!!  I don't remember Chocolate Donuts at any previous Xmas Eve partay!  You're just doing this to punish me, aren't you, BK?

And yes, I deliberately wrote Xmas!  And left "Christ" out of Christmas! Oh, horrors!  I'm so tired of this furor about what stores or anyone else says or does not say over the Christmas season.  Who the Hell cares?  Happy Holidays; Merry Christmas; Season's Greetings; Happy Chanuka; Lovely Kwanzaa; Terrific Winter Solistice!  I mean any of them are people wishing other people well over this festive time of the year. There isn't any malice in any of those greetings.  Get over it, people!  I think the people who feel threatened or angered by this sort of thing have a serious crisis of faith.  Those who are secure in their spiritual faith and religious beliefs cannot have them undermined by the mere words well-wishers use.  It's so ridiculous.

And by the by, Xmas does not leave Christ out of Christmas.  X is "chi" in Greek which is the first part of Christ...it was used, I believe, by early Christians as a code for Him.

The unpacking continues.  The more boxes we remove from our new hardwood floors the more scuffs and scratches we find left by the movers.  Someone is going to pay.  These people really screwed up.

I've spent the last few days working on my media closet, which is right off the media room and will hold all my tapes,DVDs, film reference books, CDs, and records.  It's already getting tight. I don't think all the books will fit.  I am currently boxing records for which I have CDs or those I haven't listened to in forty years and know I'm not going to...many are curiosities but I'm just not going to be listening to records with clips from W.C. Fields movies or The Marx Bros. movies.  Dvds have made that sort of thing a tad obsolete.  (These records are narrated by BK buddy, Gary Owens.)

Well, after two trips to the Wal-mart...mostly out of curiosity...The Lovely Wife and I are done.  We're not that impressed and we just feel sleazy shopping there.  Regards their workers...most of whom I've found rather slow and often a bit dim (I especially like ancient "greeter" who never greets...right after the clerks who can't identify fruit and are utterly baffled when they can't find it on their chart)...you get the kind of help you pay for.

I'm up, I'm up.

Ginny: I'm almost finished with the Gower Champion book.  While it's fun to read these sorts of books, this one is riddled with so many silly errors that it just becomes an annoyance after a while.  And the errors are SO silly that even a perfunctory check of facts would fix most of them.  But, people are so lazy now.  Plus, each chapter reads exactly the same - there's no drama, no pace, and that's why it's taken eight weeks to get through it.

Pogue: I've never been to a WalMart - is it like K-Mart?  The only thing I would say is that according to various DVD chat boards, Walmart occasionally puts DVDs out before street date.

Sorry about the floors DRCP....movers can be careless!

As for WalMart - I liked the regular ones better than the SUPER WALMART that we have now.  It's so much like a warehouse....and it has everything.  The shoppers are inconsiderate, and I don't expect too much from the employees.  They've always been helpful for me.  But I always go at about 5 am!

And I always say hello to the Greeter first!

Good Morning!

Well, it's Good Afternoon by now for me...  In any case...

I got out of bed at 12:01PM EST.  :)  I believe I actually got a full eight hours of sleep.  Very nice.  And now... Hmmm...

I just finished wrapping my final Secret Santa present - a glitter-lava-lamp style Angel nightlight.  I've had a blast with this year's round of Secret Santa.  I think there's a possibility that my giftee may know my identity already, but, still, it's been fun, and I found some fun and interesting and practical(!) gifts over the past two weeks.  My two favorites were an individual chocolate cake kit that you make in the microwave - and it came complete with frosting, sprinkles and party favors(!) - and I also put together a "day off kit for my special person consisting of two 24 oz. Miller Lites, a container of snack mix, and two Christmas music mix CDs (I used a lot of from the various BK-produced albums).  We're having the big "revelation party" after tonight's show.  Should be fun!

*And I'm also hoping there's not too much "temptation" on the food tables tonight.  ;)

OH!!!  -And this is a BIG OH!!!!!

In other Lestat news...

I received my official rehearsal schedule this morning for the New York/Broadway production from the concertmaster/contractor.

The orchestra won't be joining the process until March 1 - we start previews March 11 - which means I'll have a good three weeks after Damn Yankees closes to get re-settled back in NYC, and possibly take a small vacation.  Hmm... L.A... Sydney... Melbourne... :)  In any case...

I'll probably end up sitting in some of the New York rehearsals as it is, just because I want to, but a little down time after the run here in DC is actually looking a very good thing right now.  It would be nice to be back in the city and be able to enjoy the city again for a few before the whole Lestat machine gets going.  But, still...

It's Official!

:D

*With or without Jack Noseworthy in the cast.  ;)

It's now "resting" in the refrigerator.

There will be enough sauce for about 18 servings.  So...

Bruce:  Honestly, I have been away for 8 days and have only posted here.  But I've been reading FSM Messageboard and all the hoo-haw over the "Anonie-Mouse" issue.  It's really quite hysterical in many senses of the word.

And seemingly sane folks have apparently been blind to that individual's manipulations, machinations (and not to mention insinuations any time someone challenged his idiosyncratic ways).

I was doing my best to play nice with him when I couldn't totally avoid him...but...oh, well.

I like Target....I like K-Mart....I like Walmart!!

Our K-Mart used to be a dump, but about 7 or 8 years ago it was completely remodeled and looks fabulous and clean and I have found some of the most unusual DVDs there, so no K-Mart is my friend.

I was thrilled when the Super Walmart opened close to downtown because the other two Salem Walmarts were way out south or way out north...this new one is a quick drive and I can get my groceries and other items all in one place...and right now they have the coolest, retro-1950s Christmas ceramics in stock (cookie jars, plates, coffee mugs, salt/pepper shakers, snack trays, etc.)....in fact I just now returned from there!

And of course Target is always fun to look through.

And speaking of wrapping presents, I just received this fwd: from a dear friend, and I think the DRs here on this site, might like it too.  -If they haven't been fwd:'ed it already.  ;)

Quote

"Male Wrappers"

This the time of year when we think back to the very first Christmas, when the Three Wise Men; Gaspar, Balthazar and Herb, went to see the baby Jesus and, according to the Book of Matthew, "presented unto Him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

These are simple words but, if we analyze them carefully, we discover an important, yet often overlooked, theological fact: There is no mention of wrapping paper.

If there had been wrapping paper, Matthew would have said so:  "And lo, the gifts were inside 600 square cubits of paper. And the paper was festooned with pictures of Frosty the Snowman. And Joseph was going to throweth it away, but Mary saideth unto him, she saideth, 'Holdeth it! That is nice paper! Saveth it for next year!' And Joseph did rolleth his eyeballs. And the baby Jesus was more interested in the paper than the frankincense."

But these words do not appear in the Bible, which means that the very first Christmas gifts were NOT wrapped. This is because the people giving those gifts had two important characteristics:

1. They were wise.
2. They were men.

Men are not big gift wrappers. Men do not understand the point of putting paper on a gift just so somebody else can tear it off. This is not just my opinion: This is a scientific fact based on a statistical survey of two guys I know.

One is Mark, who said the only time he ever wraps a gift is "if it's such a poor gift that I don't want to be there when the person opens it."

The other is Edio, who told me he does wrap gifts, but as a matter of principle never takes more than 15 seconds per gift. "No one ever had to wonder which presents daddy wrapped at Christmas," Edio said. "They were the ones that looked like enormous spitballs."

I also wrap gifts but, because of some defect in my motor skills, I can never completely wrap them. I can take a gift the size of a deck of cards and put it the exact center of a piece of wrapping paper the size of a regulation volleyball court but, when I am done folding and taping, you can still see a sector of the gift peeking out. (Sometimes I camouflage this sector with a marking pen.)

If I had been an ancient Egyptian in the field of mummies, the lower half of the Pharaoh's body would be covered only by Scotch tape.

On the other hand, if you give my wife a 12-inch square of wrapping paper, she can wrap a C-130 cargo plane. My wife, like many women, actually likes wrapping things. If she gives you a gift that requires batteries, she wraps the batteries separately, which to me is very close to being a symptom of mental illness. If it were possible, my wife would wrap each individual volt.

My point is that gift wrapping is one of those skills like having babies that come more naturally to women than to men. That is why, today, I am presenting:

GIFT WRAPPING TIPS FOR MEN:

* Whenever possible, buy gifts that are already wrapped.  If, when the recipient opens the gift, neither one of you recognizes it, you can claim that it's myrrh.

* The editors of Woman's Day magazine recently ran an item on how to make your own wrapping paper by printing a design on it with an apple sliced in half horizontally and dipped in a mixture of food coloring and liquid starch. They must be smoking crack.

* If you're giving a hard-to-wrap gift, skip the wrapping paper! Just put it inside a bag and stick one of those little adhesive bows on it.  This creates a festive visual effect that is sure to delight the lucky recipient on Christmas morning:

YOUR WIFE: "Why is there a Hefty trash bag under the tree?"
YOU: "It's a gift! See? It has a bow!"
YOUR "WIFE (peering into the trash bag): It's a leaf blower."
YOU: "Gas-powered! Five horsepower!"
YOUR WIFE: "I want a divorce."
YOU: "I also got you some myrrh."

In conclusion, remember that the important thing is not what you give, or how you wrap it. The important thing, during this very special time of year, is that you save the receipt.

I shop at Wal-Mart when I have a bunch of staple items I need. There isn't one partic ularly close by, so I start and list, and when the list gets to 8 - 10 items, then I make a Wal-Mart run. Target is closer and often find myself there. Nicer stores here than Wal-Mart or Kmart, but a tad more expensive, too.

Wonder how Dino's concert at Carnegie Hall went?  Didn't DR RODZINSKI do the program for it?

Is Carnegie at four-wall house?  That is the producer rents the hall and presents an artist?  I mean, you don't have to be invited to play in Carnegie Hall, right?  Or am I mistaken?  I don't know for sure.

If I had the money, could I present an evening of myself at Carnegie Hall?

The old historical romance DESIREE with Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons came on this afternoon on the Fox Movie Channel, and since I've never seen this film in its entirety, I had the DVR catch it. I then watched about 30 minutes of it before coming to the computer.

Obviously, Fox is priming this for DVD release, because the print used for the telecast was pristine with enveloping surround sound and very punchy colors.

The spaghetti sauce sounds delicious, DR RLP.  I love spaghetti, but alas it is forbidden as I lose these last 15 pounds.

Good for you!

I still have a "goal weight" I want to get to, but over the past couple of weeks, I switched over to the mindset of just eating healthier and being more active for the long haul.  -Which has made all the difference in my motivations.  But, I still do get on the scale, but I only do that on Mondays now.  The daily weigh-ins were truly frustrating me.  -Why can't I lose two pounds each day?!?!?  However...

As I was getting ready for bed last night, I looked at myself in the mirror, and for the first time in a long time, I truly thought - and felt - I looked thinner.  Healthier.  -And after the dietetic splurging I did at the party last night, that was just the thing to lessen the "guilts".  -And some of the moves in the exercise routine I've been following have been getting "easier" too.  Two sets of push-ups today!  16 in each set!  Never in my life have I been able to do that!  :)

So...

Once you get those last 15 pounds off your frame, what will your splurge meal be?  -I have to say, I already have mine picked out... but it will only take place after I get two pounds below my next goal weight.  -Yes, pasta and dessert will be involved.  And enjoyed con gusto!  ;)

My sis called and her husband is very sick coughing like crazy. And my sis is really tired.  I almost went over. But it is supposed to snow 5cm this evening. And I hate driving when there is snow on the road.  And unfortunately her house is one major long road away.  And it is the worst when it is snow covered.  Anyhow my sis said she'd be okay. Thanks to all for the birthday greetings!!!
Haineshiswaydotcom is truly an egalitarian web site.  Even Wussburgers get their birthday party.

And speaking of Wussburgers,

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. CRAIG BROCKMAN!![/move]

My birthday had an inauspicious beginning.  At 1:00 am, I noticed we had no hot water.  Went to the basement and found the fuel-oil tank was empty.  No furnace, no heat.

I called our fuel-oil man Kenny, of whom I posted some pictures here a few months ago, and left a message.  Left a message for the furnace man.  Furnace man called back and said he would be here first thing in the morning and advised us to "bundle up".   :-\

Well, I managed to sleep as the house went down to 58 degrees, but Joe was up worrying till I got up at 7, and then he went to bed.

The upshot was that the furnace man brought over 15 gallons, I called Kenny back and discovered he has moved to Connecticut!!

Running the business had gotten too much for him with a new wife and child to support and dead-beat customers and all, so he sold it to another established company here.  They did have someone over in under an hour, so we got our heat back up.  But Kenny will be missed.

The nice thing about a cold house is you get a lot of birthday hugs!!   ;D ;D

I don't love Walmart, but mostly because it is always so crowded in their parking lot!  And I don't really like to grocery shop there (since i like to check out the circulars and try to buy what's on sale).

Going to watch a couple of the Connery Bonds on SPIKE TV - haven't seen these in many years....

YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
IMHO "From Russia With Love" is still the best of the Bond movies  - and the best of the books!

I have a great diet for everyone.  Get sick for 3 weeks! :)

Actually I'm not sure how much weight I lost.  But I truly needed it.

At least there is one good thing that came out of this illness.

Strangulation and a shooting is "very enjoyable?"  What is this world coming to?  And at holiday time, too!

Well, since I enjoyed the second season of MURDER SHE WROTE on DVD over the past week, I watched an episode from the Biography Channel. This one co-starred George Maharis, Kim Hunter, and the late Carrie Hamilton. I had only a vague memory of having seen the show as I watched it tonight, but as the conclusion got nearer, I remembered the identity of the killer.

After THE FIVE PENNIES was concluded, I put back in the first season disc of CSI: NY and watched what was their second telecast episode (but the third one filmed). The team had a track down a rat that had eaten a bullet which was evidence in a crime scene. Fun!

Well, you have a point there, but I have plenty to clean here. Tomorrow is the dreaded kitchen mopping, and I'm determined to do it tomorrow morning after I read the newspaper to get it out of the way so I can enjoy the rest of Christmas Eve day and evening.

It's the film biography of jazz trumpeter Red Nichols. This band was called "The Five Pennies," and they were very popular during the 1920s. He had such folks working for him as Glenn Miller, Gene Krupa, the Dorsey Brothers, etc. They all went on to great, great fame heading their own bands as "Red" got out of the business.

There are a few Walmarts  on Long Island (they are rewlatively recent arrivals in the past 5 - 8 years)  but the nearest is about 15 miles away which on Long Island on Christmas Eve  means a hour trip  not to mention what the parking lot and store itself would be like when I got there!

Guess I'll be picking up extra bread crumbs at the grocery tomorrow!

As I will be doing same tomorrow and Sunday as well as playing at my church gig (not being a Walmart sized church, it's actually staying open for Christmas, imagine that--don't even get me started on the utter hypocrisy of these Evangelical megachurches closing on Christmas--oops, too late  ;D), I also wish everyone the happiest of whatever holiday you're celebrating.

Thanks everyone for the good wishes on my house.

Happy Birthday WFO and Craig

It's been a very long day. I was in court for most of it, the last hearing starting at 2:00 pm and ending at 6:00 pm, but it's the time of year that I can generally still get a decent deal for my clients and this worked out well for James, so that's cool.   I especially appreciated the big hug and special thank you from his wife.  It's nice to be appreciated.

Then it was off to a wonderful Christmas get together with good friends. We celebrated my house and Christmas and just being together.

I'm very sleepy and have done nothing to get ready to leave tomorrow, but leave tomorrow I must, so it's time for sleep.   At least I don't go back to work until January 3  Cool beans

Don't know about you, but I am "terribly" saddened by this news!

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday told officials in his hometown in Austria to remove his name from a sports stadium and stop using his identity to promote the city. The governor's request came after politicians in Graz began a petition drive to rename the stadium, reacting to Schwarzenegger's decision last week to deny clemency to condemned inmate Stanley Tookie Williams. Opposition to the death penalty is strong in Austria.

In a letter that began "Dear Mister Mayor," Schwarzenegger said he decided to spare the Graz city council "further concern" should he be forced to make other clemency decisions while he's governor. Another inmate is scheduled to be executed in California Jan. 17.

"In all likelihood, during my term as governor, I will have to make similar and equally difficult decisions," Schwarzenegger said in the letter. "To spare the responsible politicians of the city of Graz further concern, I withdraw from them as of this day the right to use my name in association with the Liebenauer Stadium."

The stadium was renamed for the former Hollywood star in 1997. He asked that the lettering be removed by year's end.

Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Margita Thompson said the letter was faxed Monday to the Graz city hall. The city council was expected to take up the matter next month.

In the letter, Schwarzenegger also said he would no longer permit the use of his name "to advertise or promote the city of Graz in any way" and would return the city's "ring of honor."

The ring was given to him in a ceremony in Graz in 1999. At the time, Schwarzenegger said he considered it "a token of sincere friendship between my hometown and me."

"Since, however, the official Graz appears to no longer accept me as one of their own, this ring has lost its meaning and value to me. It is already in the mail," the governor wrote.

One fine night Pogue might find himself awake at three in the morning - you know, acid reflux, heartbearn, and then we could have one of our old-fashioned late-night frenzies.  We have sorely missed them.

The actor did better tonight - seemed to understand what he's talking about, which is a plus.  Still a long way to go, but progress in any form is most welcome.  We'll see if he retains any of the good stuff from tonight - that's the trick.  I do think our conversation today was helpful and I think it made him rethink his rehearsal approach.

Good Evening!

Back from the Secret Santa party.  Fun! Fun! Fun!  Food! Food! Food!  And, yes, it's official, I have no willpower.

;)

There was some amazing food out tonight.  Someone splurged on a very generous tray of steamed shrimp.  Another person made a great dish of hummus, and served it alongside some pita bread from one of the best pita bread places in the DC area.  Then there was the crock pot full of Cincinnati-style Chili, complete with a pot of spaghetti and shredded cheese.  Soooo good.  And then there were the desserts... I was partial to the Chocolate Chip Amaretto Cookies, and the Cashew Brittle.  -And there was also an ice cream cake from Carvel!

:)

...And almost all of the Secret Santas were revealed tonight - while some will remain mysteries until Tuesday since some people headed out right after the show.  I thought I had figured out who my Secret Santa was, but I ended up being stumped until she came up to me - it was my assistant stage manager.  And the person to whom I was a Secret Santa was also stumped until I went up and gave myself up.

And now... Three days off!  :)

There were three people in the jernt when I said "Rally, baby, rally."  Do you suppose they rallied?  Nooooo.  They WUSSBURGERED, that's what they did, each and every one.  And all I can say to them is that Santa was watching the WUSSBURGERING and he was NOT happy, oh, no, he was not happy.
