Title: A BEAN BURRITO GONE AWRY
Post by: bk on December 26, 2005, 12:06:39 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you're pondering how a bean burrito goes awry as well as the word awry, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just having a bean burrito and waiting to see if it goes awry.

Welcome five GUESTS!  What you are seeing is an acute ATTACK OF THE WUSSBURGERS!  It's most unseemly, but what can you do.

Has Ann caught up?

I have mixed feelings about THE PRODUCERS.  I did not see the musical onstage.  I have the cast album.

Nathan Lane gets on my last nerve, and Matthew Broderick looks like he's making some very strange faces - at least in the television promos.

I did see the original film, but only on television.  For me, one of the funniest things EVER was the reaction shot of the audience after the opening number of the show....  There is a moment of that shot from the new film in the television promo, and the people in the shot seem to be saying "aren't we funny?"  I can't quite say what I mean, but it seems calculating and NOT funny at all....I guess they just seem smug and pleased with themselves.

ANYWAY....I am reticent....oh yes, I am reticent, although DR ELMORE's point about editing in MOULIN ROUGE is well taken.

Hmmmm.....I must ponder this.

Best films

Capote
Good Night and Good Luck
Harry Potter and the Temple of Doom
Chicken Little

Ok I didn't go to that many movies. The above four I saw when I was in NYC last month and one before that was Bewitched and that was awful. It had one good joke in it and that was only because I live Boca Raton. Like so many of his fellow SNLers They just don't work when they have to sustain one character throughtout a film. They are good sketch comedians when they play a characher for five minutes or so.

Good morning, all!  Isn't today Boxing Day, whatever that means?  I will put on my glovesd, runs some fast errands, and then settle down for a long winter's work.

TOD:
TRANSAMERICA
JUNE BUG
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
PRIDE & PREJUDICE
THE WEDDING CRASHERS
THE BEAT THAT MY HEART SKIPPED
IN GOOD COMPANY
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FDIRE
THE PRODUCERS

Well, I've got nine here.  I know I saw more than that in the theatre, but all I can think of are Debra Messing's THE WEDDING DATE and THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, both with Charlotte, and neither deserves a 10 best list.

Today is also Saint Stephen's Day, according to my calendar.  In honor of that, I will begin perusing the lovely book on Sondheim that elmore brought us (among other lovely, thoughtful gifts).

I realize that I haven't been in a movie theater all year, although I've gone to much theater.  I guess I have a preference for the cramped overcrowded live theaters over the roomy comfort of the movie theater multiplex.

Skip's seen a lot of movies this year, both in the theaters and on DVD, so maybe I'll purloin his ten-best list and make it my own.  :)

Hey Happy Boxing Day all!  Boxing Day is huge here.  In fact I believe it is still the biggest shopping day of the year (which always cracks me up).  They have the best sales, and the malls open at 1pm (in montreal at least).  But if you get there at noon, the parking lot will already be packed.

The biggest deals are for electronics (computers, tvs ...).  And those stores will be mobbed.

I of course will venture out.  It is tradition. :)

Also my sis called this morning and cracked me up.  Unfortunately little Megan has a cough and has been crying.  When she told me about the crying last night I told her to sing to her.  I mentioned that when I did this she stopped crying right away.

So apparently last night my sis and her hubby had to sing my song to her (i made up a song she loves). Only they did not know the words.  So they were making them up (to the tune i used).  Well everytime they stopped, she would cry again. And when they would sing she would smile.  That made me laugh (even though i'm sure it was not funny to them).

Morning all!  Well, we survived another Christmas.

I have no plans on going out either.  I guess I should take the FireFly Phone back but I think I’ll wait until next weekend.

As for the TOD, if  Star Wars III   was this year ( I can't even remember) then I think it was the only movie I went to see.  I much prefer to be home and watch the DVD so I can stop it if I need/want to.  Not to mention, I like making my own popcorn and I can have fruit juice or hot tea if I want.

AND the BEST is that I don’t have to listen other people hacking, coughing, sneezing, using the cell phone, the kids crying, etc, etc.  To be very honest, I might have to listen to Bear snoring on the couch but I’m used to that.   :D

Morning-after-Christmas greetings!  I crashed last night and am very tired today.  We've discovered that we have some furnace problems - too much heat or none at all - so we have a call in to the HVAC guy who's married to our niece.

Found the comments on The Producers all very interesting.  It's going to be our New Year's Eve movie - my mom and my aunt are looking forward to going with us.

I'm not entirely sure I've seen ten films this year.  Usually, when we've gone to see films, we've had the grandlads in tow.  This has led to our seeing a couple of films twice: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (because the first time we took William alone, and Alex insisted that he get to see it as well, so that made two times) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (because der B thought it best we check first to see if it really was too dark, but it wasn't).

Personally, I liked King Kong.  Anyone who is worried about having to sit in a theater for three hours should take one of those inflatable donuts, if comfort is the problem.

I am officially "over" the holidays.

The past three days have been filled with various/sundry assortments of family "personalities" and I, for one, have been sated of such frivolity for a minimum of one more year.

I've heard the same stories, the same jokes, and the same bitches over and over and over for three days.

Tired of it/them all, I am.

But wait...there is one more night.  Yes, fried chicken, green beans and potato salad are being served up at my mom's house for us and six others.  It will be a subdued group, as all of us have been together at the past three days worth of doings and all the other relatives who popped in, performed, ate, exchanged/received presents, and dashed out again.

We motley few shall congratulate ourselves on another holiday season of get-togethers and jobs well done with each of the meals we've all participated in as cooks and sideshow attractions.

Seeing "Lestat" on Saturday will be nothing compared to the performances I've witnessed the past few days...all the high drama and playing nice while daggers flew silently across rooms.

Good morning!

A gorgeous day-after Christmas morning here with beautiful blue skies with a few cumulus clouds. Temps to be in the mid-50s today.

But I have absolutely no plans to be out among the shoppers today. I'll talk a walk, but that will be the extent of my outside time. I have plenty to do around here, and some DVDs to watch.

I am looking forward to seeing THE PRODUCERS so I can enter into the discussion, but I have to say that the TV-spots look very flat. Perhaps it's because I did see the entire original cast in the show in NYC some years ago and am so familiar with it and the original film.

Still, despite reviews that are all over the map (one local critic gave it two stars; the other three stars out of four), I will see the film. You bet I'm starved for movie musicals, and (except for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA), I will support them with my $$$ when I can.

The best film I've seen this year was CAPOTE followed by GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, SIDEWAYS, HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, and BATMAN BEGINS.

I have yet to see SYRIANA, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (which doesn't get here until the 13th of January), CINDERELLA MAN (with the DVD sitting here on loan, but I haven't seen it yet), or the films just now released (MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, THE PRODUCERS, MUNICH, etc.)

With everything in reruns tonight on TV, I have THE BLUE BIRD to watch (and burn a DVD of) today, and I will probably watch one of the old roadshow classics today that I got for Christmas: THE AGONY AND THE ECSTACY or DR. ZHIVAGO.

I'm trying to think if I even saw ten films this year...

Good Night & Good Luck, I liked a lot...I can't think of any more right off the top of my head.  Uusually about this time, The Lovely Wife and I see all the films we missed during the year when I can get into them free with my WGA card because they are touting them for awards.  Alas, this year we were a bit pre-occupied with other matters.  We've a lot of catching up to do.

Interesting word, "farrow."  I just looked it up.

As a noun, it means "a litter of pigs."   As an adjective, it means "not pregnant", and is used to discribe a cow.

THE PRODUCERS seems to be dividing people in terms of reaction the way ONCE UPON A MATTRESS did.  Among our acquaintances, both have been running pretty close to 50/50 in terms of thumbs up or down.  No trend noticed in terms of the same people liking or disliking both, though.

Good Afternoon!

I think I'm going to pass on the sales today.  However, I may head to Trader Joe's and/or Target to pick up some supplies - just not sale items.  -And I do have that Border's coupon, so... We shall see.  Otherwise, I'll probably venture out with my friend, Andy, to see "The Producers", and maybe grab dinner someplace if we can find someplace that isn't mobbed.

And as for the "The Producers"...

Even though I haven't seen it yet, I loved how the reviewer for The Washington Post put it...  Something along the lines of... "In a perfect world, the film would have starred Nathan Lane and Gene Wilder."  -But since that's not meant to be we get the "charisma-challenged" (I loved that adjective) Matthew Broderick.

;)

-And, yes, I still want to see it.  Just lots of friends in the foreground and background.

And as for the Topic of the Day...

I think I may have actually seen 10 films this year, but I don't think I have a Top Ten... Or maybe I do... Let's see...

"Millions"
"The Prize-Winner of Defiance, Ohio"
"Brokeback Mountain"
"Madagascar"
"The Constant Gardener"

Alas, I wish I could have included "Rent" and "Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride", but that is not to be.  I did like "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", but I'm not sure I would put that on a Top Ten.

And I know I'm leaving off one or two... Just can't think right now... I think I need to get my workout in... ;)

OH!

And as for "Junebug"... The Washington Post did a nice rundown of the Best Films of the Year that we all should have seen, and "June Bug" was on the top of that list.  And I didn't realize that it's star, Amy Adams, is the same Amy Adams who did the costumes for "What If?".

I like DRMATTH's use of the word "flat" for the TV promo for THE PRODUCERS.  That is the word I was looking for.

I may see it.

I only saw ONE movie at the theatre this year, so far, KING KONG, and except for some of the unnecessary changes and the awful music - I liked it.   No need to see it again because of its length, but once was okay.

And only because I really liked these two paragraphs from Stephen Hunter's review of "The Producers" in The Washington Post...

-DON'T READ if you think this might be a SPOILER for you...

Quote

An ideal world -- that is, a world run by me in contravention to all laws of physics and biology -- would mandate an ideal "Producers" starring Nathan Lane and Gene Wilder. Alas, back here in the real world, Stroman's film stars her legit boards boys Lane and Matthew Broderick, Mostel having gone on to that great delicatessen in the sky and Wilder pretty much retired. It's not that Broderick is bad, or even disappointing; he's something far worse -- he's not Gene Wilder. He doesn't have Wilder's God-given gift for suggesting a hysteria more intense than a seizure, which it resembles and which twists his rhythms into giddy pulse-crazed gibberish sited on the outer reaches of human irrationality. He goes hysterical the way bullets go ballistic -- at hyper speed and damn the consequences -- then returns in a flash, crisis solved, to sweet-natured, blue-eyed docility. Broderick is just Matthew Broderick: hardworking, decent, possibly charisma-challenged. When he goes hysterical, it's just an actor doing a fair hysteria, not a man touched by the deity speaking in tongues.

But I know some of you are Zero's people. Zero had the most astonishing comb-over in captivity, and that dainty fat-guy fussiness. He seemed to possess a size 54 waist while wearing size 5 shoes, and was astonishingly light on his feet, like a 600-pound Tinker Bell. His eyes narrowed into psychotic greed with extreme passion and his fat fingers seemed hungry to rip more more more flesh off the carcass. It was great, I give you that, and it's just taste that you favor Zero and I favor Nathan. The case for Lane rests on those really cool aigu-et-grave- accent eyebrows going for him, which means that everything he says is deeply insincere. I treasure that in a man. He makes lies sound like lies and the truth sound like even worse lies. He's a belter, too. He seems to be channeling Ethel Merman, and when he power-blasts a number you can practically feel the spit-spray through the screen.

I was simply thrilled with the quality of the Fox Movie Channel's broadcast of THE BLUE BIRD. The Technicolor is so vivid it made my teeth hurt, and the art direction and production design as magnificent as always. Fox used that stereo processing they do to their films, and the music spread nicely along the front soundstage.

That forest fire sequence is really something to see with the sharpness and clarity that this broadcast attained. Hopefully, the DVD (whenever it's chosen for release) will be this vivid!

Harry Potter's Protection Spell

It's not wizardry, but Harry Potter apparently protects his legions of youthful fans from injuries, at least during the weekends his newest books keep them huddled indoors on reading marathons, British researchers said.

Stephen Gwilym of the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and his colleagues counted how many 7-to-15-year-old children came to the emergency department on the weekends when J.K. Rowling's two most recent tomes were released and compared them with other summer weekends from 2003 to 2005.

The number of children brought in with injuries during the weekends "The Order of the Phoenix" and "The Half-Blood Prince" were released was about half the usual -- lower than any other weekend in the three-year period, the researchers found. There was nothing else unusual about those weekends, such as odd weather, that could explain the findings, they added.

"Harry Potter books seem to protect children from traumatic injuries," the researchers wrote in the British Medical Journal.

"It may therefore be hypothesized that there is a place for a committee of safety-conscious writers who could produce high quality books for the purpose of injury prevention," they wrote, noting, however, that "potential problems with this project would include an unpredictable increase in childhood obesity, rickets, and loss of cardiovascular fitness."

Staying in a Shirley Temple mood, I then watched POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL. Sad to say, the local cable station had some trouble with the Fox broadcast with digital breakup in several places; therefore, I did not burn a DVD of this movie.

Still, Alice Faye's superb voice on her songs makes it clear why this was a stepping stone on her way to real stardom at Fox, and the film remains on of my favorite Temple films.

I still have STOWAWAY on the DVR to watch, probably tomorrow. I don't want to overdose on Shirley.

I noticed that THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA had already started on HBO-HD, so I flipped over to see how the film would look in high definition.

I got into it around the time of the song "The Phantom of the Opera" and stayed through "Masquerade." The production looks even more lush and splendid than it did on DVD, but the extra clarity only emphasized to me Patrick Wilson's total blandness as Raoul.

I have seen interviews with Matthew Broderick and he seems like a very sweet, humble, and down-to-earth guy.  The kind of man you would enjoy lunching  with on a Saturday afternoon.  However, I don't think I have liked anything he has done acting-wise since WAR GAMES (and no, I am not forgetting FERRIS BUELLER)  Granted, I have not yet seen THE PRODUCERS (on Broadway or on film) so I will try and keep an open mind.  Unfortunately, the last time I kept an open mind for Matthew was for THE MUSIC MAN.

I enjoyed Mr Broderick's performance in "The Producers"  on stage much more than that of Wilder in the old movie. I enjoyed  Mr Broderick's performances in "Glory" and "Biloxi Blues" and "Torch Song Trilogy"
I've never really taken to me Wilder's "hysteria" in any of his movies.

Horses for courses I guess.

Of course I find Mr Broderick way more attractive than I do Mrs Broderick.

I agree about Matthew Broderick and BILOXI BLUES. I think he's wonderful in the film. I am not a fan of FERRIS BEULLER, but I just don't like the character or plot. It had nothing to do with Broderick who seems to be playing what's written very well.

I thought he was a ridiculous choice for Harold Hill and found that TV-THE MUSIC MAN very hard to sit through.

DS Rob and I just returned from a holiday open house at the home of a local family in which the wife is a good friend of mine, the son is a former student of DH Richard's, and the younger daughter and Rob were pre-school classmates.  It was fun to see all these kids interact as young adults and to catch up with people that I don't get to see often since I work out of town.

Just watching the news and may I say something?

My heart goes out to the Dungy family and their loss.  Tony Dungy is a football coach whose son committed suicide last week.

What I don’t understand is the hundreds of people who are turning out for the viewing and will (no doubt) do the same for the funeral tomorrow.  Now if you were a friend of the family, I can understand the need to be there.  But to just show up, forgive me, but I don’t get it.

Why do people turn such a sad event into a side show? Let the family grieve in peace!

I can't imagine what it must have been like to have Christmas yesterday, knowing they would have a viewing of their son today and to bury him on the morrow.

The Chronicles of Narnia
The Squid and the Whale
The Family Stone (just saw today and it was great IMO)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
The Wedding Crashers
Red Eye (love that Rachel McAdams)
Sin City
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Mr. and Mrs. Smith

I'm probably leaving some off.  And I'm going to see a few movies this week that I'm sure belong on the list- Brokeback Mountain, Syriana, Transamerica

It was fun, but I was ready to leave and get back.  I did make arrangements for my 17 year old niece, Samantha, to drive here tomorrow and stay until Thursday.  It should be fun. I have promised her indoor ice skating, bowling and movies.  I'm really looking forward to it. She loves movies, so she is very easy to entertain.

I'm very sleepy. I didn't get the cleaning done I would normally do for guests, but I did the basics and I've very sleepy, so I'll save the rest until tomorrow.

I saw "The Producers" last night (for free!) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  It was the 10:25 p.m. showing (I didn't get out to my car until almost 1:00 a.m.) and there was a sizable audience, most of whom thoroughly enjoyed it as well.  There were several people who were literally slapping their knees because they thought it was so funny.  I never slapped my knee, but I did laugh out loud quite a few times.  The "flatness" of the filming didn't bother me.  I've said it before and I'll say it again...my standards are pretty low ;).  I've seen a lot of stage shows filmed for television, and having read reviews that criticized it for looking like that, I was expecting it and wasn't disappointed.

Today, I went to see "King Kong."  It's long...three hours long...but for the most part, worth it.  The entire dinosaur sequences and all of the giant bug scenes were totally over the top and seemed like they could be in a completely different King Kong movie.  If the dinosaurs and the bugs could be cut way down, it probably would be the right length for me.  Otherwise, it was very good.  All of the special effects were great and the beginning of the movie setting up the Depression era was very well done.  I vaguely remember seeing the original movie on TV when I was a kid and I never saw the Jessica Lange version, so I don't know what the differences are between those and this new version.

Shopping was crazy.  We left at 11:30am even though the stores only opened at 1pm.  The parking lot was starting to get crowded even that early.

Some of the restaurants in the mall opened and some stores opened early.  Oh, we had to stand outside with my dad first in front of Best Buy cause he wanted a laptop.  There were hundreds of people standing outside the store.

I shopped till 4pm. And by that time it was so packed.  More packed than i've ever seen the malls packed (even on Christmas eve). Totally crazy, but fun! :)

Ginny your home town was kind to us, meaning it didn’t rain too much.

On Bryan’s birthday we even managed a quick trip to the zoo to see the lights, and I mean quick.  Bryan got off work late and then there was a long line leaving us only 40 minutes to walk around.  It was still fun and we were glad we went.  From the zoo we went for a very late dinner and then to Bryan’s favorite dessert place.

On Christmas evening Bryan got off a bit earlier so we went for dinner and a movie (Walk the Line).

Christmas morning Keith made matzos brie, we opened our gifts, and had a relaxing day.

Bryan’s dinner, in spite of a power outage, was suburb as usual.  He makes the best corn soup I have ever had.  The potatoes were just barely cooked enough before the power went out to make mashed potatoes with caramelized red onions-oh so yummy.  The stuffed squash we left in the warm oven as long as possible and it was just done, not to perfection but delicious all the same.

Not cooked in time were the vegetables and the cheese and spinach ravioli Bryan made completely from scratch.  We were sorry not to even have a taste.

Dessert, a chocolate mousse with a fig sauce, was cooked after the power returned.

Thank goodness for Chanukah.  Without the candles on the  Menorah we would have been plunged into total darkness.  It truly was a miracle.

Craig sent us a package to Bryan’s place which never arrived.  I feel bad for him and he paid express delivery fees.  We did talk to him and he was having a very nice Christmas in Bucharest with Ioana, her mother and grandmother.  Having found homes for two of their rescue pets they were down to just the one cat and dog before their company arrived.

Hi, Jane!  I'm glad you had such a nice time, even with the power outage, visiting with Bryan.  It sounds like the men in your family are very good cooks.  My nephew, Perry, who was here from Atlanta for Christmas, brought his homemade sweet potato pie for our holiday dessert - it was yummy!

Speaking of pie, I just put a pecan one in the oven for our nephew Chris.  We're meeting him and his parents and his fiance (who we'll be meeting for the first time) for lunch tomorrow at the Montgomery Inn.  Chris is an Air Force search & rescue helicopter pilot.  The first time I took a pecan pie to his family's house for a holiday meal he said, "I didn't know people could make this at home!"  So, now he gets a homemade pecan pie whenever I have the chance.

In the holiday spirit, there hasn't been so much talk of nudity on the New York stage in a long time as has been spurred on by Johnny Galecki's brief briefless scene in THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED by Douglas Carter Beane at Second Stage.  The scene is said by some whose opinion I respect to really take the audience out of the play and say oh boy, look at Johnny Galecki's [whatever word they might use].  Heard good things about the guy's acting, and hope he doesn't get overshadowed by his own nude scene.   But the nude scene seems to be selling tickets, albeit at discounts.

It's a good movie, not a great movie, and it could have been handled better by someone with some actual film experience.  Yes, the movie is sort of "flat", which didn't bother me too much, BUT when it came to some of the more fantastical sequences, well...  -I was really hoping that "That Face" would have opened up for the big screen.  I also had a quibble with what was "real" and what was "real".  Some of the exteriors were actual exteriors, and others were most definitely on a soundstage - and were made to look like a soundstage.  -Or at least very minimal effort was made to make the soundstage stuff look more real.

And I did stay until the very end.  Actually, Andy and I were the only ones left in the theatre by that time.  I wanted to scream at everyone, "Sit down!  It's not over yet!"

...And the true highlight of seeing "The Producers" was seeing soooo many people that I've worked with, played for and/or am currently working with up on that screen.

And I guess I did blink when Brad Oscar was on screen - although, I think his face was obscured most of the time.  But I did recognize his voice.  -He's the cabbie in the "You Can Do It" sequence.

And it was great seeing Meg Gillentine as one of the usherettes - the brunette - as well as one of the showgirls.

And it was nice to see that the whole "Springtime for Hitler" sequence was basically just the real stage version.  -Although, I did miss the "joke" with the mannequin storm troopers.

...And when the cast listing started rolling... It was basically Tara Rubin's filing cabinet!

;D

-And I do have to give credit and kudos to Stro for using so many Broadway Babies in the movie.

...And I had to make sure that my friend, Andy, knew of John Barrowman's other "talent".

Before heading to the movies, I made a stop at Target.  It was surprisingly not crazy-busy.  I stocked back up on my vitamins and supplements - I've found that the whole Fish Oil and Flax Oil regime really works for me.  And I also bought a Balance Ball.  I've been looking for something to help me stretch out my lower back, and this should help.  -Yes, the Fitness Bug has officially hit me.

And then I headed over to Andy's house so that we could head out for dinner.  Alas, we had to walk his sister's dog, Susie, before heading on down the road.  Susie is an Australian Rhodesian Ridgeback.  Andy's sister has a couple of them, and she "shows" them off from time to time.  And since Andy's sister headed out of town for the week, Susie is staying with him.  One of Susie's relatives, Kamau, stays with Andy regularly.  -Beautiful dogs.  In any case...

Andy had originally wanted to drive Susie over to his sister's house so that Susie could do her "thing".  Andy thinks that Susie feels more "comfortable" over there.  Well, I just said we should walk her around his neighborhood.  I even took the leash.

Well, we walked down the street.  Around the corner.  Nothing.  Andy was about to suggest that we go ahead and head back to his place and get in the car, but then... TADA!  She started to her "thing", and then she did her "other thing".  Good girl.

-I just kept telling Andy that if he keeps thinking that Susie will not do her thing, well, then she won't.  But if you encourage her, believe in her.... The power of positive thinking.

:)

It really was kind of funny.  Kind of... Dontcha think?

Ohhh...

And sitting on Andy's kitchen table was a box of chocolates.  From Petrossian.  Paris.  His father orders them regularly.   I had no idea Petrossian made chocolates.  I only knew of their caviar trade.  Well...  I had two.

:)

Very good chocolates.

I have eaten so much left-over candy and fudge and dessert today I am completely and thoroughly nauseated.  I'll probably turn into one big zit tomorrow.

My goodness, it hasn't happened in quite some time, but the Merry Searchers returned today, and man, were they searching merrily.
