Title: RANT

Well, you've read the notes, you've heard the rant, the rant has heard you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're in Pomona, ranting.

In my CD player:  songs that I downloaded from iTunes:  the six songs written and performed by Nellie McKay for the soundtrack to "Rumor Has It," which is not available in CD form...only by download.

I also downloaded from iTunes three Sondheim songs by Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley on their "Opposite You" CD, but they're part of a five-song medley!  I have to download the other two to get the whole thing because one song is the first song in the medley and doesn't end properly, the second song that I downloaded is the middle song of the medley and doesn't begin or end and the last song is the last song and doesn't begin!  It's Sondheim, so I don't mind too much, but it would've been nice if iTunes could've indicated that it's a medley. :P

Good morning, all!  And a special good morning to you, DR Tomovoz!  How can we survive for 10 days without you?  DRBen's absence was bad enough!  I was E&T most of last evening and missed the new plateau.  I think HHW should treat it rather like ships crossing the equator and make a huge special event of it.  My court hearing went well (I think), and the trip to Broad Street wasn't so terrifying as I anticipated.

This morning I'm up quite early to finish things for my accountant, then a visit to the recording office for more Toyland work and, hopefully, the beginnning of THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.  I need to hit the NYPL Theatre Collection today or tomorrow as well.

Wasn't there a famous "Concert for Balderdash"?

TOD:
CD:  MRS HENDERSON PRESENTS, Bach Cello Suites (Yo-Yo-Ma) Victorian concert overtures
DVD:  SWIMMING WITH SHARKS, KING KONG (still!)
  VCR:  Lowest of the Low

Up early again...but not for long.

I watched four (count 'em 4) DVDs yesterday -- "Fantastic Four", "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," "Lady Sings the Blues" and "The Emperor's New Groove."

I, too, have "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/Petulia" (John Barry) and "The Glass Slipper" (Bronislau Kaper) in my CD player, along with Kaper's "Lili,"  Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?" (2-CD edition) and Legrand's wondrous "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg."

Standing by are Leigh Harline's "Warlock" and John Williams' "Memoirs of a Geisha."

FYI (especially the concerned vixmom): I've had no more repeat episodes like the ones I had Monday.

I stayed home yesterday with a touch of some crud or other that made it prudent for me to stay close to home/bathroom.  Otherwise, I was fine.  I would not have been able to watch four (count 'em 4) movies on DVD had I not been feeling well.

I went to bed early last night and my eyes popped open at 3:15 a.m.  My throat was a bit dry, so I've been up since then doing little things that needed doing, including posting here.

But the lids are heavy...and I need a few more hours sleep before leaving for work.

Ciao-ders...!

Yes, and the 5 weeks were hell!  Stop it.

No, the DVD player is not multizone; I had needed one badly since the other was so old mothing new was playing well on it.  I would like to purchase one that will play anything but not at the moment.

According to the list at the top I'm the only one in the room

It's a day full of Broadway, Off-Broadway and London cast recordings, with one exception. I have The Fantasticks (Off-Broadway), Follies (OBC), A Grand Night for Singing (BKs CD), Halleluham, Baby (OBC), Little Me (OBC), Marry Me a Little (Off-Broadway), 110 in the Shade (OBC), Romance, Romance (OBC), Oh, Coward (OBC) and Cowardy Custard (via Tom of Oz and London). I also have Barbara Cook's latest CD, Tribute. It's the one CD that is not a cast recording.

Right now I'm listening to the soundtrack of Call Me Madam. I put it together myself from the DVD so it's got more tracks than the release I found last year. I prefer my version.

We have nothing planned for the VCR or DVD but who knows what may pop in to the machines.

We have to do laundry after work and then we are meeting a friend and we will have Chinese take-away (I've been Europeanized) for dinner.

I will probably watch something as I begin to get back into my exercise routine. I have not done anything since December 15th and I must, must, must begin again.

Didn't someone here (maybe it wasn't here) post a link a while ago about finding the right code to make any DVD player multi-zone? Apparently the code is set by the manufacturer but if you know the correct code and how to plug it in, you can change your DVD player from one zone to multi-zone. The sellers and manufacturers don't tell you that but I've heard it's possible. Am I just repeating some urban legend/conspiracy theory or is there something to this post?

Yes, DRRODZINSKI, you could have had sex with Miss Barbara Payton, if you had $2....according to her rap sheet.

Hmmm....EBB TIDE....well it's not the BEST Frances Farmer film to see....I guess I would call it torpid.  But it IS in color.  JMK might have a better suggestion.  COME AND GET IT or SON OF FURY are a couple of choices.

Hmmm....good morning everyone.

Well I am off to work this morning at the World of Wisdom Bookstore.  Hopefully everyone will keep to the schedule, and I will be home around four o'clock.  We shall see.

TOD:

DVD: The Hunters - fun war movie with Mitchum and Wagner, especially the jet plane scenes

CD: The Iron Giant - original soundtrack with some fun 50's tunes.

VCR:  Solomon and Sheba - whew Gina Lollabrigida, can't understand a word she's saying, but this is a BIG production.  Yul Brynner took over after Tyrone Power suffered a heart attack....  Sheba, I guess, is somewhere near Italy....and even the Pharaoh looks confused sometimes when Queenie is talking to him.  But she has a plan....

Friday greetings!  It's Epiphany, the 12th day of Christmas, and what that means in our household is that I'm now allowed to start taking down decorations.  You know what I'll be doing this weekend!

TOD:  CD(car) - original cast recording of Spamalot.  We listened to this in DH Richard's car on our family trip to Indianapolis several weeks ago and my guys were aghast when I said I'd never seen a Monty Python movie.  While DS Rob was home we watched both Holy Grail and Life of Brian, the dumbest things I'd ever seen.  I do like the Broadway album, though.  For my CD player at home, I have 4 recordings by Angela Gheorghiu.  I saw her on the PBS rebroadcast of the New York Philharmonic New Year's Eve concert and wanted to hear more.

DVD - Empire Falls

VCR - those same Marge & Gower Champion movies I've been trying to get to for weeks now.

DVD: Episode of the 1950s TV series BLONDIE. It is much funnier then I was expecting. Also, the Akira Kurosawa film SCANDAL.

VHS: I have several movies taped but don't know if I will get any of them watched this weekend, but if I do it will be the JRand55 recommended THE HUNTERS (see his post above).

CD: Some KAMUELA AND THE SOUTH SEA ISLANDERS and a little RICHARD HYMAN.

Forgot to post this earlier.

We had dinner w/a friend in from out of town. We went to a new Greek place on 46th and 8th Avenue. It's been many things but now it's a Greek place. A little pricey for what they have but it's midtown and you can't escape it.

Anyway, as we were eating in comes Shirley Knight and Kathleen Widdoes. I didn't recognize Ms. Widdoes until we were leaving since all I saw was the back of her head during dinner. Anthony was using the facilities and my friend, Dick and I were at the door waiting. Ms. Widdoes was walking out ahead of her friends and I stopped her and said how much I enjoyed her in After the Ball. She thanked me and said, "you know, we've made a little recording of the show" I said, "yes I know. I have the CD. I'm a friend of Bruce Kimmel's" She was very pleasant and thanked me again as she walked out the door. My friend, Dick, said "You're braver than me. I couldn't do that" Hmmm, I guess I'm a real New Yorker :-)

Listening to A Grand Night for Singing right now. Even though the show was not great shakes, I do like this CD. Thanks for recording it Bruce!

Hello!  Its a busy day in the office today so I don;t know if I'll be around much.  Glad to see RLP back.  Last night I dreamed he was lying on the floor of his apartment gasping like a fish on dry land and I couldn't reach him.

And speaking of back, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN has finally opened here, and I'm going to the first afternoon showing today unless I find it's a sellout. Will post thoughts later.

I think it goes without saying that this is the movie I've most anticipated this year after it opened at the Venice Film Festival and won the Golden Lion. If I don't get to see it today, I won't brave the crowds for the weekend. I'll see it Monday or Tuesday afternoon when folks are at work.

And tonight is NBC's controversial THE BOOK OF DANIEL. A couple of NBC affiliates have already pulled the show and refuse to air it. I'm petrified our NBC station will do the same. There was a news story last night talking about the flood of e-mails the station has received protesting the show (before it's aired, of course!) So, I wait and hope. I may have to ask some kind DR to record the show for me if I find the station here cancels it.

Oh, Bruce, ain't Showbiz grand! You rehearse and rehearse, and it couldn't be worse, then outa the hat - the big first night... But, sheesh, your "process" actor sounds like quite a trial. I have given up being a trial. Now it's the director's show, and I'm lucky to be there at all. Younger actors, overripe with "talent" or (Godfibbid) "genius" can lean away from any direction at all - it interferes with The Performance.

Speaking of lucky to be there at all... last week's audition in San Diego has not led, by now, to being cast in that particular show... but I did get a call from a friend of those producers, who needs An Older Actress for a short gig in Colorado in February. So I'll shlep down there again some time next week to talk to this dude. His friends recommended me so highly, blahblah.

Note to you kidz just starting out: sometimes They can't cast you in THAT show, but they can remember/recommend you for another gig. And - life is long. Try not to annoy the director - said director can opt NOT to hire you again... or WORSE, will tell others how difficult/annoying you are in production.

There is actually a lot on tv tonight (which rarely happens on a Friday).

We have a new Ghost Whisperer.  And Close to Home.  And the show that many of us seemed to like from Sunday, In Justice.

I will also tape/watch The Book of Daniel, although not sure it will be my cup of tea.

So did anyone else watch Dancing With the Stars?  I liked it.  I was most surprised by Jerry Rice and Tatum O'Neal. I was least impressed with Master P (although in fairness he only had one week).

I had to watch the first hour on tape (since i was watching my niece at the mall while her parents had a bank appointment).

Speaking of watching the baby at the mall, it was quite interesting.  This is one of the only times i've been with her without her parents.  And since she's been sick lately, it's the only time recently she's been at the mall.

It was so cool watching her experience all the lights. I guess now that she is 3 1/2 months she can actually see the stuff around her.

She was so interested in everything. And we had a great time!

Accompanying Rant to BK's Rant:

BK, he doesn't feel "emotionally connected" to the lines???!!!  It is horse pucky!  He's an actor.  He should have thought about his "emotional connection" to the lines a long time ago.  If he felt he couldn't get "emotionally connected" to the lines, he shouldn't have taken the part.  It's the actor's job to make the lines work whether he feels "emotionally connected" to them or whether he's out on stage thinking of Chinese food and "emotionally connected" to nothing.  As the old adage goes, "Acting is Truth...once you learn to fake that, you've got it made."  It's the actor's job to tailor himself to the role; not have the role tailored to him...or to his inadequacies!

I HATE, HATE, HATE actors who make excuses for not doing the minimal requirements of their job.  Worse, I hate actors who make excuses couched in the mystical, artsy-fartsy, pooka-pooka ethers as if "Acting" is "Magic".  It is magic, but it's based on the very pragmatic principles of Laurence Olivier's break-down:  "Say your lines, pick up your pay, and piss off!"  It's always the actors who can't get the simple things done, who  alway speak of "the art of acting"  as being much more difficult than it is.  It's a cover for their own incompetence.

We just got our first TV in...they couldn't put the main one in because they have to run a new line and didn't have the time because they didn't bother to find out that we didn't want to place the TVs in exactly the same position as the previous owners. So they're coming back Monday to finish the job.  But it's nice to be partially connected.

Also is does anyone else have both Adelphia cable and internet services?  I want to know if something that happened to me yesterday is a national or local problem.  On the work order form for my cable connection was my private internet information...an identity theft waiting to happen with the first disgruntled employee.  Frankly, I was a little amazed that after I set my internet codes, they sent me an email with all the info on it.  I've been with MSN and SBC and have only ever seen my password as x's.  This concerns me no little bit.

The Lovely Wife & I will be attending the local gay theatre group's production of Corpus Christi tonight.  Tickets for two: $30.  We're not in LA anymore.  Of course, I doubt the quality of the production will be what I'm used to paying a $100 or so dollars for in LA or 60-70pds for in London.  But I'm very interested in seeing a production of this controversial play...probably made much more controversial than it actually is by a lot of narrow-minded religious bigots who disguise hatred and intolerance as faith and family values.
Title: Re:RANT
Post by: bk on January 06, 2006, 09:14:35 AM
Pogue, I would call Adelphia, tell them your passwords are YOURS and they are NOT to print such things on work orders or anywhere, and then change them all with them on the phone.

Re actors, I just want to throttle them sometimes and say, "Do you think Marlon Brando paraphrased the words of Tennessee Williams?  Do you think in the recent revival, Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin indented words in their big speeches just because they felt like it?  Do you think Al Pacino inverts words and fucks up the language when he does a David Mamet play?"  The answer, of course, is no.  And yet, I don't have a take of this monologue that we shot last night that is letter perfect, or with a performance that I would call stellar.  Having to put soft dissolves in it is a joke, but that's what I have to do.  And you know what?  I STILL don't have it letter perfect, not one take.

At the first rehearsal for this show, I said to each actor, "You'll notice that there are times that the dialogue in the show is written in an "arch" or "old-fashioned" way.  I did that on purpose, so please understand that when you're working on it."  FIRST THING OUT OF MY MOUTH.  Last night the guy says, "Well, it's just so not the way I would say it."  And I said to him, "You?  It's certainly the way the character would say it."

Tomorrow is our trip with the grandlads (and their parents) to Philadelphia.  Wednesday, we made our test-run up to the City of Brotherly Love, and made sure we knew exactly where the Arden Theater is located (along with parking nearby).  Then we went over to the Reading Terminal Market, one of my favorite places in the world.  We definately want to make a stop there on Saturday, if just to see William's reaction to all the different kinds of food on sale there.  Alex, who "only likes" certain things, will doubtless be saying "yuck" to almost everthing.

We had originally thought of taking the family to the City Tavern, a reconstruction of the city's oldest restaurant, but I found a comment on-line about how the service is slow, and therefor not quite family friendly.  Heck, the place dates back to Franklin's day, when children understood about being seen and not heard.  We later had dinner at the joint: the food was excellent, but not what we'd serve to the grandlads, or even their Daddy, too fancy.

While at the Market, der B checked out his second choice: the Down Home Diner (http://www.hollyeats.com/DownHome.htm), Jack McDavid's salute to good food for everyone.  But in reviewing the menu, der B wasn't too sure that the Diner was a good choice, either.  Sure, they make a soup and grilled cheese sandwich combo, with the soup being a tomato soup, but the soup also has basil, which would no doubt cause Alex to go into a screaming fit.  Yes, he's that spoiled.

I led der B down a block to the next alternative, the Hard Rock Cafe.  Yep, they're everywhere.  But they do have a child's menu, which has a variety of foods that Alex might at least try.  The big thing will be to keep him from ordering the macaroni and cheese, as he "only likes" the stuff made by Kraft, and will spit out any other version he's offered.  Yes, he's that spoiled.

All and all, a successful day in the city.

What amazes me, at the store, is they number of people who are buying books of the 37-cent stamps.  They come in books of twenty - just how many letters are they going to send out before the price goes up?  Or are they buying them as collector's items?
Title: Re:RANT

From your comment I assume they are not buying to 2 cent make up stamps so they will have to trundle back to the Post Office or store to purchase even more stamps.

Since I have no plans on mailing anything between today and Sunday (I just put a letter in the box with a 37 cent stamp), I bought a book of the new stamps when I went to the post office at lunch time.

On the drive home from Philly, I put on the musical Cyrano, the version from 1973 with lyrics by Anthony Burgess and music by Michael J. Lewis.  It may not have worked on the Broadway stage, but it certainly works on disc.  Der B was unfamiliar with the original play, as it turned out, so I had some 'splaining to do.

SPOILER ALERT: If you aren't familiar with the play, skip to the next message.

There is one thing that puzzles me, upon reflection.  Just how old is Cyrano supposed to be?  He is Roxanna's cousin, they played together as children.  She is a young unmarried lady, lusted after by the Count de Guiche, her guardian.  This, as I understand it, would make her perhaps eightteen years of age for most of the play (the final scene takes place fourteen years later).  So, for Roxanna and Cyrano to play together as children, he would have been, at best, four or five years older than she.  This would make Cyrano something like twenty-three, at most, for the majority of the play.

So why is it the part is so often played by men much older than that?  Cyrano is still a young man!  He dies when he is certanly less than forty, and that's just for one scene!

DRSWoodyWhite, you're exactly right.  Cyrano is not an older gentleman, but a young one, still older than Roxane or Christian.  I suspect because the role is such a great one and Walter Hampden wouldn't let go of it, that any classical actor between thirty and death wants to take it on.

Don't forget in a major bit of absurdity, Ms Close played young nurse Nellie Forbush, who can't be more than 24 or 25, in SOUTH PACIFIC.   And in closeup television, to boot!

I "googled" and found this!

It takes place during the reign of Louis XIII, when Cardinal Richelieu was waging war against the Spanish in the north of France and Flanders during the Thirty Years' War. The siege of Arras, in which Christian de Neuvillette dies, is a historical event, which took place in 1640 and in which the real Cyrano took part at the age of 20. The final fourth act takes place 15 years later, in 1655.

I've just learnt that French actor/singer Lambert Wilson (Remember; DR Jose is President of his US fanclub! - He's gonna "hate" me for that!) has tried for years to produce a French version of SUNDAY IN THE PARK but finally gave up.... because Mr Sondheim asks for prohibitive amounts of money!

Rodzinski and I watched Dancing with the Stars.  I agree with your comments. Especially Master P- what was with the sneakers??

Bk, re: the Adelphia thing.  It's apparently their national policy.  Supposedly so if they have to get in on someone's computer and work on it, they can.  A woman at the local office here (where I paid a visit in person) said you'd be surprised as to how many people don't remember their information.  That still doesn't explain why it needs to be emblazoned on every work order.  Anyway, she was very nice and gave me the name and number of her supervisor who she said would help me locate who I can write to at the national office and explain that this isn't a particularly good policy for security reasons.  It seems to me one is only one disgruntled employee away who could take a sheaf of such forms and start an identity theft disaster.  Just another reason I never put my credit card over the internet.

Just returned from BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, an achingly poignant and devastatingly sad film that will be with me for awhile. Beautifully shot and acted and sparsely written, it is quite something.

The theater was full, perhaps a few scattered seats here and there, but a sign was up that both the early evening shows were already sold out.

Both newspaper critics here have given it four stars (out of four).

And now I have to get ready to head in for the show.  It's "Out Night" at Arena which is their Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender/etc. night.  It's one of their special subscription series.  Normally, there is a group of about 25-30 people that are there for Out Night, but this time round we have a big group from the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, some local groups as well as the usual subscribers.  Should be a lively house - especially during the second locker room scene.  ;)  -And then there's a meet-the-cast reception afterwards - which usually has some very good food and drink.

And, as 'luck' would have it, I have a bunch of friends coming to tonight's performance too.  Fun, fun, fun.

*Btw, "Out Night" is also unofficially known backstage as "Date Night".

I also think Lisa Rinna has a lot of potential. But the one I was most impressed with was the woman wrestler. I'd never heard of her before.

Gisele and Drew Lachey were also good.

I voted for the woman wrestler.

Who knew Master P was little romeo's father?  I think they cut him a lot of slack because he only had one week. It just didn't seem like he tried that hard. Although he kept saying how he was doing it for the katrina victims.

I can't believe they gave him 4s and that sportscaster guy 5s. That guy was robotic, but he tried so hard. And i really thought that it must have taken a lot for him to do that.  ANd he was good. I think he will learn a lot.

Not sure who will go. Part of it is popularity. But you'll remember Kelly Monaco (last year's winner) got slammed by the judges early on.  So it's really about the potential.  Slim and flexible women like lisa rinna, gisele and stacey (is that the wrestler's name) should do really well.

Matt, it was Betsy's station here in Portland that broke the story.  It was one of the reasons she ultimately got out of broadcasting--it was a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week thing here in Portland for months.  I was in the studio one day right after the bodyguard (the fat one, can't remember his name, Shane, maybe?) had gotten back to Portland, and Harding's coach had been stupid enough to use a cell phone to call Harding's attorney (this was back in the early days of cell phones) and a reporter had picked up the whole conversation with a scanner.  And he had it on tape!!  We sat around the studio and listened.  The finagling they were going through was incredible.  Of course you probably know Tonya has continued to get herself into one scrape after the other, despite her shiny new nose, LOL.

You know, that is always the problem I had with that Shakespeare dude.  How could some director expect me to say, "To be, or not to be?"  That is sooo not me.

Tonight, a side trip into the Salvation Army store on my way to the subway netted some interesting LP finds.
The cast LP of the Off-Broadway musical LET MY PEOPLE COME.
Two mint LPs from Hungarian performers, one guy sounds kinda like the Hungarian Englebert Humperdinck. Very catchy songs. And a rock band called Illes, who sound like a Hungarian Guess Who or something.
And I accidentally bought a Goulet LP I already have.

Santino vastly overrates his own skills, and now he has Nikki Hilton feeding that ego of his. It will be fun to watch him take a fall because Nick is the more imaginative designer. And what has happened that I am typing about dress designers on a reality show I do not know, but it IS entertaining.

So, was everyone already aware that the singing group THE COWSILLS inspired the TV series "THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY"?
In Barry's obit in today's L.A.Times, it claims that they turned down the chance to do the show themselves because the producers wanted to cast Shirley Jones instead of Barry Cowsills' mother.

More bad news for independent record stores--

Now that Aron's Records is closing, another major record store, Rhino Westwood, which has been doing business here for more than 30 years, has announced that it's closing next week.

Causes include music downloading, the popularity of CD sales at Wal-Mart and Best Buy, Amazon.com, and...that enormous store on Sunset Blvd., Amoeba Music.

The L.A.Times says that they "reportedly" turned down the opportunity to do the show themselves.

WITHOUT YOU is a great album. As grim as the cover would suggest.

I actually got a chance to ask Roddy about that cover when I met him in Bowling Green, Ohio once. I watched InJustice tonight.  I think it was the pilot.  It's really interesting to see our side of things, at least the way you need to unravel things and figure out what went wrong etc.   It could be an interesting show.   I'm sure it's modeled on the Innocense Project, but the lead attorney isn't anything like the attorneys I know who actually work there - but that's what fiction is...

I get so irritated at this whole Book of Daniel bruhaha. Come on if every legal show had to be acurate, there wouldn't be any on tv. It just isn't that interesting or that dramatic most of the time.  So it may stretch it for most clergy. Get over it.

I'm a major Cowsills fan. They were wracked with a lot of internal fighting over the last 25 years or so. The Partridge Family was "inspired" by them, and basically producers liked the idea of a mom singing with her  kids in a rock band, but it was clear they couldn't really act.

Don't know if it is available on CD, but should anyone ever run across their semi-conceptual LP CAPTAIN SAD AND HIS SHIP OF FOOLS it is a really fun and lovely record.

1988 Grammy Nominees that year for cast album
were:

Into the Woods (winner)*
Anything Goes (lincoln center revival)
Chess (Broadway)
If Thee I Sing/Let 'Em Eat Cake*
Show Boat*

These three albums I thought were very worthy and my choice would have Show Boat.

Anything Goes and Chess were also very good. Chess especially for Judy Kuhn and the late David Carroll.

I still wish I knew what the criteria was when the vote the grammy in this category. Only Into the Woods and Chess writers received nominations the others receive some kind of honorable mention.

So do they vote on:
Quality of the recording? (Technical etc)
The singing?
The score?

For those on the West Coast, IN JUSTICE was new.

For those who watched the DANCING WITH THE STARS results show what did you think?

I won't give away who was voted off.  But I think the top ones pretty much have to be safe. I mean if Drew Lachey was #1, even if it was in last place with the fans, he couldn't really lose.

There were a few I was nervous for.  I was hoping the disastrous Master P would get the boot.  I was also hoping that Lisa Rinna (who did well) would not get voted out (she was in the bottom 5 i think).  I was also hoping the sportscaster guy would get another chance (he was very manic, but he tried!).

I wish we could find out the placings! We only find out bottom 2.

I found THE BOOK OF DANIEL very enjoyable. The first quarter hour was very noisy and manic, and I wasn't enjoying it, but afterward, things settled down and I got interested in the characters and all the pltolines. At the end of two hours, the show I felt it was most similar to was DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.

BTW, the scenes with Jesus were my very favorite things about the show.

And people are just plain stupid if they found one second of the show sacrilegious.

But I'll bet NBC lost a ton of money on airing this show. I noticed there were not many national commercials on it. Most of the commercial time was spent doing NBC promos (over and over and over). Since most dramas cost a minimum of $2 million an episode to shoot, you had $4 million worth of show with very little commercial time being sold to support it.

NBC has only filmed 6 episodes. We'll see how things pan out with it.

Michael -  There's some unwritten rule that Skip has to sleep with me and I have to sleep with Skip, so i think it's up to Bruce to sleep with whomever must be slept with to get Starfighter a Grammy nomination.  :)

It's interesting that a small label can get nominations if the title is right.  But I think so much depends on having a strong title.

Bruce has been nominated for the Grammy, though, in earlier years, IIRC.

Bruce once wrote an absolutely hilarious riff, which I wish I had printed out, as a parody of someone's all-too-obvious self-promotion of their album.  Bruce's parody had a few lines along the lines of :  "We're talking Grammy here.  Absolutely.  Yes, my Grammy loves my new album and will rave about it to everyone she meets."

We'll be back with more of "The Best of Bruce Kimmel" after this message.  :)

As I rememberr, it was Momma Coswsill turning down the gig for the whole family, because they didn't want to use her.

Hello.  I watched the Book of Daniel tonight.

Possible spoilers ahead !!

Although I will attempt to be vague enough not to give anything away for you west coasters and tivoers out there.

I agree with Matt  I didn't see anything sacreligious in it... I think they went a little over the top with this pilot however... not the Jesus bits... they were the most calm, sane pieces in the show

I understand needing to grab the audience's interest but it seemed as if they dumped enough different plotlines in the first two hours to last five seasons.....

And can we ever see a minister on TV that doesn't live in a mansion?

I suspect the Catholics are going to be a tad upset with the helpful friends of the Catholic priest

I lost interest in Seventh Heaven because the minister there never seemed to consider turning to God or Jesus as an option for the problems the family encountered. I like the fact that the minister has a personal relationship with Jesus, isn't that what Christianity is supposed to be about?

That's how I remember it as well.   I wanted to be Susie Cowsill.

Unfortunately, if you combine the musical talents of my two brothers and myself  you may just have a lethal weapon

Poor Tonya!  She went to a casting call for SKATING WITH THE STARS, but they decided she couldn't skate well enough, and she definately was not a celebrity.

How does someone get nominated for a Grammy...or an Emmy, a Tony or an Oscar anything else for that matter?

I don't mean the politics, the backstabbing, the campaigning ...

I mean the technical process of nomination.  Is there a nominating commitee or can any memberof the appropriate union/association nominate something?  And if there is a committee how does one get on it? Can people nominate projects they themsleves are somehow connected with?

SWW, what is The Dinosaur Musical?
The Dinosaur Musical (http://www.ardentheatre.org/2006/dinosaur_reviews.html) is a new work by the composer and lyricist of A Year With Frog and Toad.  It is receiving it's premier engagement at the Arden Theater in Philadelphia, and has been getting great reviews (see link).  Since the lads have enjoyed the F&T cast recording in the car, der B and I agreed that this would be a great way to introduce them to live theater.  I'll be able to give a better report after we see the show, of course.

Let's not go to the other extreme either... but hey can't the minister live in the three bedroom ranch house next door to the little church that seats 250 instead of in a mansion down the road from the church that rivals St Pat's in size and architecture?

And maybe he could drive a five year old Ford and maybe his wife could look old enough to have actually given birth to the passel of teenagers in the house. sometime after she turned 12

Thanks for the vibes, vixmom.  Things at work are slowly improving.  My job title has been revamped slightly, giving an older employee her due in rank, which I have no problem with.  The only problem was that they waited two weeks to actually inform me of this.  In fact, I had to go hunting for the info after the my new co-lead asked when her planning times would be in relation to mine.  Bad leadership, says I.

I'm glad the vixter likes the WITA arrangement.  If you'd like, I can send you a recording of my performance.  Not my best one, but not bad.

DR François - You have a very good memory.  -I actually still have that Lambert Wilson CD in my collection, but I haven't listened to it since the second time I listened to it shortly after I bought it.  I had to listen to it a second time just to make sure my ears and sense of pitch hadn't gone awry.  ;)  -And, if I'm recalling correctly, I found the CD in a cut-out bin at Tower Records... That should have been my first clue.

;)
Title: Re:RANT

And as for Sunday In the Park with George en français... I believe part of that "fee" had/has to do with the amount paid to/charged by the translator - and the subsequent royalties due to whomever gets the credit.  Heck, if Pacific Overtures could be done in Japanese, and Sweeney Todd in Catalan...  And something tells me that Sondheim and/or his lawyers would not charge an exorbitant amount for the translation/production... But I could be wrong.

*I also have to wonder if the Chicago Art Institute comes into play now since they own the rights to the painting now.  -Well, at least it's in their collection.
Title: Re:RANT

DR SWW and DerBrucer - Yes, I know Donna Migliaccio.  In fact, I've known here since she was Donna Lillard (her maiden name).  She was one of the original founders of Signature Theatre.  I did Into the Woods with her, she was The Witch, and Sunday in the Park with George at Arena Stage.

-It's nice knowing that she's branched out of the DC market.  She got a nice break after doing Guys & Dolls on tour when she got cast as Claudia Shear's understudy on the Dirty Blonde tour.  And the tour was even "her's" for a couple of weeks.

-And I don't think I've seen her since the Kennedy Center Sondheim Celebration....Wow!  That's been three years already!  -Although, I'm pretty sure we've crossed paths since then.  -She likes to rub my head...well, my hair.

;)

DR Iris - Thank you.  How's LA?
Title: Re:RANT
Post by: JoseSPiano on January 06, 2006, 11:21:23 PM
We'll have a gay old time!

:)

It was a very successful Out Night At Arena.  A truly wonderful audience.  Not everyone in the house was GLBorT, but there were at least 100 people there that were part of the series.

Thankfully, there were no cat-calls during the locker room scene.. ;)  -However, there was a sense of "stunned silence" in the house.  ;)  But there was a great response during the courtroom scene when Sister is trying to get away from the Court Room Guard, "Get off me, you Republican!"  -Yes, that's the original line....  There was a true roar in the house.  The Commissioner had to hit his gavel a couple of times to quiet down the "court room".

After the show, they had a very nice reception in the Old Vat Room - Arena's black-box space.  Almost "everyone" showed up - it was a very crowded room.  Beer, wine, sodas... Cheese platters, mini-crabcakes, chicken satay, and "pouffy" pigs-in-a-blanket (breakfast sausages wrapped in puff pastry).  After some mingling, there was a brief Q&A session with the cast.  OH!!...

But before the Q&A, the "men" of Damn Yankees had a special presentation for the assembled throng.  They customized one of the songs, "The Game", for the evening, for the crowd...  "You've got to think about The Gays..."  It was very funny.  Very cheeky.  Very raunchy -but in a very good-natured sense.  -I'd print some of the lyrics here, but since this is a family site...

All in all, a very good evening, and I had a couple of friends in the house tonight too.
Title: Re:RANT
Post by: JoseSPiano on January 06, 2006, 11:24:17 PM
*I did overhear some people talking at the reception... They were asking where their friends went.  Someone said they went home right after the show.  Apparently, they were bored the whole time.  Bored?  Hmm...  I think it's very safe to say that there's no way you could be bored while watching this production.

...Just such a weird comment to hear, that's all.

Oh... And the "command performance" at the Kennedy Center on Monday has been called off.  Turns out that due to the space they'll be using for the reception - and some other pre-arranged entertainment - there's no room for a pianist and a singer.  Ah, well...

OH!!

And we found out tonight that North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, MA, will also be doing Damn Yankees during their upcoming 2006 season.  However, they've received special permission to alter the show, and make it about the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.  And the production will be presented in conjunction with the Boston Red Sox organization.  Apparently, all the contracts have been signed, and there's even an official "Red Sox Edition" of the script being put together.

DR Jason - Have you heard anything about this?

And I just checked out www.nsmt.org, and, sure enough, it's opening their season.
