After a not good year for a few reasons, I am in fact about to go on a sensible diet to prepare for the rigours of travel in September and to attempt to regain some physical well-being which has been absent for the past 8 months!

I have heard of people going on an eat nothing white diet.  My diet shall be of the non wacky kind! Some added exercise is also called for!

DR. Vixmom asked if there were any tv series with a Rabbi and their family.

There was one.

Lannigan's Rabbi.
A detectiver series that was part of the NBC Mystery Movie franchise. It starred Art Carney and in the first episode Stuart Margolin played the rabbi and Bruce Soloman played the role in the remaining 4 episodes. The late Janet Margolin (no relation to stuart) played the rabbi's wife and Janis paige played Lannigan's wife.
The first episode was based on the book Friday the Rabbi Slept Late

Good morning!

The sun hasn't quite come up yet, but it looks to be a very clear, bright, but cold day.

A nightmare woke me up around 6, and I couldn't fall back asleep so I just got up, read the enwspaper, and now I'm here.

DR Vixmom, every awards organization has different ways of nominating potential winners for awards. Not every group does it the same way, and even the winners aren't determined the same way in every group. For example, once the Oscar nominations are made (by the individual segements of the academy - film editors nominate film editors, actors nominate actors, directors nominate directors),  then the entire Academy membership votes on the winners . The Emmys have "blue ribbon panels" that view every nominated show in a particular category and then vote for the winner.

I don't know from diets.

I spent so much of my life string-bean thin that, after I finally gained some weight, I never thought of a need to lose any poundage.  I mean, I guess it was OK to have just 145 pounds stretched over a 6 foot 2 frame, but it was dang hard finding clothes that fit.  To be honest, it's still hard finding clothes that fit, but back then it was nearly impossible.

The very first time I ever realized I needed to diet, I was horror-stricken because I had always been one of those 98 pound weakling types who could eat anything and never gain a pound. As I moved through my 30s, I began picking up weight and didn't really notice. I had a partner who was an excellent cook, and he and I made big meals and over the years we were together (8), we both put on weight. But when you're happy and busy, you just don't pay them much attention when you gain a few pounds every year.

Anyway, when the first local production of A CHORUS LINE was announced for here, I was desperate to be in it, but I realized I'd never be able to dance that show weighing what I weighed and being as out of shape as I was, so I went on that Dexitrim diet. Those were the pills you could buy that would curb your appetite. Of course, I also had to change my eating habits and switch to diet drinks. People ahd told me that Dexitrim would make me too hyper to sleep, but that was never a problem, and I did lose the weight. Got down to 167, auditioned, and got the part of Greg in the show

Now, I find that a combination of exercise and not overeating at meals and staying away from sweets and snacks like potato chips except on rare occasions help me lose weight.

I have no plans to leave the house today, so I should be able to get in some good video watching, especially since my morning started so early today.

I do want to see last night's IN JUSTICE that the DVR picked up, and there are several movies here that I'm anxious to sample. I also have some phone calls to make to friends which will occupy part of the afternoon, too.

Good morning, all!  After two 5:30 am wakeup days, I slept in.  I watched THE BOOK OF DANIEL, which didn't grab me or repel me (hmmm) and went to bed.  Once again, however, the religious right prove themselves total morons in condemning a program with only peripheral knowledge of it (and our own DRMBarnum watches Bollywood based on the box cover!).

Today, a meeting at noon about the next NYCGMC concert; they want me to do a dance medley from Hollywood films and the meeting is with the choreographer, then a lot of work on a chart for Judy Kaye, and tonight goddaughter Charlotte and I see Ms Kaye in SOUVENIR, which closes tomorrow.

Last night DR MichaelShayne asked:

"Since I see dr elmoore on line I have a few questions for him.

Did you appear in the "documentary" about the recording of the recording?
Did you orchestrate Ron Raines' song Gigi on My Favorite  Broadway: The Love Songs.
Have your orchestrations ever appeared on Evening With Pops or any other program?"

1.  I was not in London for the recording of SHOWBOAT so I am not in the documentary; I was here running errands for the Maestro.  I was the one who went to the Secaucus warehouse, once ownership rights were cleared, to pick up the three pieces from SHOWBOAT that had only been discovered recently:  "The Box Office Scene," "Apache Dance," and "It's Getting Hotter in the North."

2.  No, I did not score "Gigi" for Ron;  I don't know who did, but I assume it's the same orchestration on his recording for JAY, where the tempo and performance are better.

3.  I've worked on three Evening at the Pops concerts:  Sarah Jessica Parker, Nathan Lane, and a holiday one in which Liz Callaway sang my chart for "A Place Called Home."

About the Grammys, I am a member of the NARAS and a Grammy voter.  I'm sure Dear Friend BK is as well, but I don't know if there are any other members on the site or not.

TOD:  Look at my photos:  you think I diet?

What's that old joke about the garlic diet?  You don't change anything you eat, just eat garlic with every meal.  You don't actually lose weight, but you look thinner from a distance.

My weight situation has been a matter of what Joan Rivers said:  "I got married and my body said Thank God!"  Or at least off by a few years, anyway.  For the first ten years of my adult life, I was obsessed with exercise and being at or near a perfect weight and build, but I was generally miserable about life in general.  Now, a decade and a half later, somewhere along the way I've become very content and happy as a human being, and concerned about my major weight gains only to the extent they'll create health problems, the effects of which I'm starting to feel.  But the long period of all that effort to look good was generally a terrible one, so maybe I associate the striving for physical "perfection" with some degree of restlessness and misery.

There, that was cheaper than therapy!  :)

Misery is the surreptitious end-product of many religions.

I'm up.

I went to bed early.

Exhausted.

Watched the first hour of "Book of Daniel"...not bad.  Has potential.  Certainly doesn't live up to the horrific fuss made over it by the clueless right.

It certainly wasn't worth the withdrawal of freedom of speech by preempting it from airing, which would have allowed folks with brains to have decided for themselves whether or not they wanted to watch it.  I think NBC should cancel its contracts with the offending affiliates and offer affiliation to more intelligent, less-easily swayed-by-hysterical-fanatics independent channels in those areas.

Recorded all of "Book of Daniel," plus the two-hours Sci-Fi block of "Stargate, SG-1" and "Stargate: Atlantis."

I loves my Stargates, I do.

Yes, the fundamentalists' outpouring of venom about THE BOOK OF DANIEL was similar to their outrage over THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST which I found to be very moving and VERY spiritual. A masterful story of temptation and faith's triumph over it.

Jesus' words in the show last night were so full of simple wisdom and love and concern. What's not to like? The fact that a priest has problems? Who doesn't? The Catholic priest in the show had Mafia connections? Comes with the territory in certain parts of the country (and besides, THE GODFATHER III got there first).

Well... I guess I'll workout between shows today.  Or not.  Hmm...

I slept in this morning.  More accurately, I let myself sleep a full eight hours.  Rest is good.  Sleep in good.  And since I was up late last night...

And even if I don't end up working out between shows, it'll be OK.  I'll be OK.  *If the weather was a bit warmer, I'd go for a run around the Tidal Basin - Arena Stage is just a stone's throw away from that area.  I'll be packing my running shoes and clothes to take to the theatre just in case.  -And I would really like to go for a run too, and it's been a while since I have.

Which leads to...

As for the Topic of the Day...

I've dealt with weight issues/problems since my pre-adolescence.  It was always sort of strange for me since my three younger brothers have never really been "fat".  (However, in retrospect, they were always more active - played team sports, etc., so...)  But I digress...

My mother is a registered dietitian, and, unfortunately, I have some rather unpleasant memories from my younger years of being 'reminded' how to eat and what to eat.  And since my father was in the Coast Guard, he would, from time to time, try to get me to exercise... Well, sometimes he would make me exercise.  -Sheesh, that sounds like I was abused - which I wasn't.  It was the age old situation of a parent trying to get their child to do something they did not want to do, something that was good for them.  I'm just saying that both my parents were concerned about my weight problems as I was growing up.

Of course, nothing compared to the pressure and various other assorted feelings I dealt with once I got into high school.  Kids can truly be very cruel at times.

Once I got into college, I was, more or less, happy with my weight, with my size.  Yes, there were many times when I tried to eat healthy food, tried to get in some exercise, but there were also times when that concern was just not a concern.

Fast forward a couple of years later when I'm in my late 20s and early 30s, well...  Let's just say that the gay culture can sometimes be crueler than kids.  So...

The only "name brand" diets/lifestyle plans that I've been on have been "Body For Life" and "Atkins".  BFL sort of worked for me, but I found planning the time to eat all those small meals throughout the day a major obstacle to sticking to the program, to it's success.  *I would really love to see a diet plan that is based on a different "clock" - one where one's day starts at 10:00am, and not 6:00am.  Atkins worked for me initially - I remember losing eight pounds in the first two weeks.  Eventually, that commitment slipped by the wayside, partly because I lost interest, and partly because I began to feel that the whole Atkins protein-heavy plan was not exactly right for me, not good for me.

I did try some of those diet pills a few times.  Bleh!  They did make me feel hyper, and I didn't like that constant feeling of always being "on".  It was just plain weird and unnatural.  So...

Last year, 2005, I made a conscious effort to get my life in order, get more things under control.  My body was one of those things.  There were various attempts throughout the year.  Small steps.  I had read various diet books and articles over the years, and just started taking the best things - the things I liked, the things that made sense to me - and letting those guide my daily habits.  Slowly but surely changing my mindset.  My priorities.  And then...

As I've been recounting here on HHW, I started a new "plan" the week of Thanksgiving.  So far, so good.  I had bought that "Slim in 6" series a couple of months back, and I started using it again.  And that's been the basis of my exercise routine.  The intermediate level is a 45 minute workout, and I used that for the first two weeks, and then advanced workout is just under an hour, and I've been using that since then.  Six days a week.  I chose the program since it focused on getting trimmer and not on bulking up.  Just getting more active, getting a good sweat in.

As for the eating portion of my plan, I've basically just been refraining from eating white sugar and white flour.  I haven't totally cut those things out, but I've been making a very conscious effort to keep those things off my dinner plate.  I also read Dr. Perricone's latest weight loss book which actually has one of the most sensible diets I've come across.  I think there's a bit too much emphasis on dietary supplements, but the part about getting more good fats and essential oils (mainly Omega-3s) back into one's diet really made sense to me.  More importantly, although, like in most diet plans, one can lose a "great" amount of weight in the first one or two weeks, after that the weight loss is very gradual, one to two pounds a week.  Which is a good thing.  The slower it comes off, the slower it is likely to come back on.  Not only is your metabolism up, but your mindset is also changed.  You're breaking old habits and developing new ones, better ones.

Presently, I'm not exactly sure just how much weight I've lost - and, frankly, after getting on the scale last week, and being disappointed with the numbers, well...  However, I'm over that.  I can definitely see a difference in my body.  I can tell that I've lost weight, and that I've also put on muscle.  -And other people are starting to see that difference too - which always helps!  I've lost a good inch - more like an inch and a half in my waist - and I can see that "V" starting to develop from my shoulders to my waist.

There was a little blurb on Men's Health about how for every pound of weight lost, you lose a 1/4 inch off your waist.  But you have to be careful where you place your tape measure since as you lose weight, your navel will start to shift "up".  And, lo and behold, mine has!

Well... This post is turning into a short story... And I do need to get ready to head in for the matinee...  So...

Have I said too much?....

;)

Oh... And I guess I should have added that a major trigger for me to get into better shape was my father's bout with prostate cancer in 2004.  Thankfully, he's fully recovered from that now, but that was truly a scare.  And since his incident now "makes" me and my brother more likely to develop the same thing, well...

*And I also have to say that watching the finale of "The Biggest Loser" was also a trigger in a sense.  It was amazing seeing some of those transformations.  -And it was also "amazing" seeing how noticeably "sad" that one woman was who had not lost any more weight since leaving the ranch.  I don't want to be sad any longer.

OH!  And know it's too late for this right now, but before I forget again...

DR SWW - As for the mac 'n' cheese at the Hard Rock Cafe, it actually may be the Kraft stuff from a box.  My mom is in food service, and they do make those packets available for restaurant use.  They know how picky kids can get.  And, on a practical note, the "meal" can be prepared to order instead of sitting under a heat lamp or in a water bath to keep it warm for hours on end.

The goofiest diet I ever tried was a five day juice fast.  The intent wasn't necessarily to lose weight, but to clean out my system.  And, man--did it ever!  I had bought a juice extractor, and the juice fast involved not just fruits, but vegetables.  You would think that drinking an 8 ounce glass of juice from which all of the pulp is extracted wouldn't effect you much, but the concoctions I was making and drinking were like Liquid Drano.  I don't want to go into any details on what came out of me and the explosive manners in which it did.  Anyway, five day fast--I lasted three.  What makes me laugh is a workshop at the Omega Institute that is called the Seven Day Juice Fast.  Knowing how the plumbing works at Omega, that would be one week I'd rather not spend up there.

For me, the best diet is no diet at all--just keep things balanced and use common sense.

Just came home from an earlier morning showing of The Producers. I rather liked it. There were moments that I laughed and others I didn't because I knew the joke was coming. But the people in front of me did laugh.

And yes it was rather stagey, but I don't think there was any other way to film it. There  were musical numbers performed to the camera, but how else would it be done. It's not really a show that can be opened up. It reminded me of how some of the MGM musicals from stage shows were produced. They were either filmed entirely in soundstages (Brigadoon) or mixture of location and soundstages. (On The Town)

The King of Broadway was sorely missed.  As I felt it told us who Max was. Was it cut because of the punchline "Who do you have to f**k to get a hit show"
Where Did We Go Right was also cut, but not missed. But from the closing credits it is obvious that Andrea Martin and Debra Monk's bits were cut and are basically cameos in Along Came Bialley.

I am sure some people will be glad to see Brent Barrett in a leather man outfit. He played Bryan the set designer.

Uma Thurman was no better or no worse than the original actress.
Will Ferrell was surprisingly good. Not a fan of his other films I have seen and he was quite good. Nice to Gary Beach and Roger Bart in the film.

Almost didn;t recognize John Barrowman with Blond Hair. He looked rather good as a blond. And it seemed he dyed all his hair blond.

There were two songs done over the end credits. There is Nothing Like a Show On Broadway sounds as if it was written for the show and dropped and but back it to give Mel Brooks a shot at an oscar nominations. The other one was The Hop Clop Goes On was rather amusing and sung by Ferrell in rather a good voice.

And stay through to the end of the credits. There is another musical number and a surprise cameo.

Re:  eat nothing white.  It's actually very good advice, at least in terms of processed foods like white rice, white bread (and bleached white flour), etc.  Most bodies have a very strong insulin reaction to the "white" foods, which turns pretty much directly into fat.  I am certainly overweight these days, after having been pretty buff for my 20s and even 30s (if I do say so myself  :)), but I've found that rather than "diet", changing my eating habits to only whole grains (which I pretty much have done anyway for decades), no dairy to speak of (only soy and the like), and getting lots of fiber through veggies and such, just makes me feel better.  I try to keep my carbs to under 100 a day, my fat to less than 30gms a day (usually a lot less than that), and my calories--well, I don't always count calories, LOL.

Now there is one I even missed!!

Looked it up. Good cast

Henry Corden who went later to be the voice of Fred Flintstone and was born in Montreal!!

On the TOD, I feel like I have been on a diet my whole life. Which is ridiculous because I have never gone over 150, and yet it's always on my mind.  My freshman year in college was when I was the biggest, I gained about 30 pounds and used Jenny Craig to get back down to a more comfortable weight.

Since moving to NYC after college, I have pretty much gained and lost the same 7-8 pounds over and over again.  I've used e-Diets and Weight Watchers to lose the weight but it's usually back in 9 months to a year.  Currently I'm about 2 pounds above the highest weight in my comfort zone if that makes sense.  I'm thinking about going back to watching points using the weight watchers scale but not actually going to meetings or paying them to weigh me or anything.  I also think that I've plateaued with my workout schedule.  I'm going to have to kick it up a notch. :)

I think my best diet strategy is just not to eat when I am bored.  And not to think about it all the freaking time.  Besides, Rodzinski doesn't seem to have a problem with what the few extra pounds have contributed to my curves.

Topic of the Day:

A few years ago, my friend Margo (who weighed a lot more than I did) wanted to adopt a second child from China, so she looked into different weight loss programs (Weight Watchers, just exercising at the YMCA, gastric-bypass, etc.), but nothing appealed to her.  In the 80s, she had actually done the Optifast liquid diet and it worked...but then reality set in and she gained all the weight back.  Anyway, since she didn't want to have to buy two tickets for herself, she found this program that was offered here in Olympia that was like Optifast (all-liquid meal replacements) but wasn't as calorically restrictive.  When she did Optifast, it was no more than 580 calories a day!  What she found was called Take Charge and it was no less than 1000 calories a day!  You could drink all the meal-replacement shakes if you needed, didn't need medical monitoring because the idea was to stay above 1000 calories.  So, as she did this program, I could really see a difference and I thought, I could do that...so basically on a whim, I did.

I went to their orientation and signed up.  It was a breeze!  I loved it.  I've always been a picky eater and knew that if I was to try any kind of weight-loss program (I had never tried anything before), it would have to address that in some way.  This took all of the decision making out of the process.  I lost 121 pounds over the next 10 months and even went to London during this time and took the shake packets with me!

One problem was that it was very expensive...averaging $500 a month.  I was able to handle it, but that was the beginning of my credit card issues.  The other problem was that the program was based in Seattle and the two people were driving down to Olympia every week, but as time went by and people dropped out (as they always did), there weren't enough people in the program long enough for them to justify paying two people to drive down to Olympia every week.  Damn them!  The abandoned us!  Anyway, reality set in.  I gained most (but not yet all) of the weight back. :P

But, almost four years later, my credit cards are almost paid off!  In just two more months, I will be completely debt free!!  Now, I can join some kind of weight loss program (which I intend to do) and actually afford it.  I don't think I'll be able to go back to the Take Charge program (they still offer it in Seattle...a three-hour round-trip drive), but I really want (and not just "need") to do something else.

And that's my only diet/weight-loss experience. :)

Ohhhh, don't get me started....

Where to start...

Let's start with The Dinosaur Musical.

It's an original story, by the Reale brothers.  Willie writes the book and lyrics, Rob writes the music.  Basically, several years after a truce is made between carnivore and herbivore dinos in an effort to preserve both types of animals, a couple of Tyranosaurus Rexi (the plural, I hope) convince their new and naive king, Quincy, to break the truce.  They are met with resistance from a group called The Resistance, an alliance of herbivores and some carnivores, who liked how things were going with the truce.  In a sub-plot, Eleanor and Mindy, the teen-aged daughters of a Resistance T. Rex and a lovely Parasaurolophus chanteuse named Reginald and Carlotta (respectively), plot to bring their parents together romantically.

Does the show work?  Yeah, for the most part.  The target audiences are kids aged five and up, and their parents.  There is singing and dancing, satire mixed in with some tender moments (Quincy's wish that his father, King Marcus, wouldn't die is given an entire Ashman/Menkin wish song).  The book drags a bit in spots, and could use some more work, but the target audience enjoyed the show.  (Good lighting and other special effects helped, of course.)

Four of the thirteen characters die (one by natural causes) in the course of the show, nothing too morbid or lingered over.  The deaths didn't seem to bother any of the kids watching.  Guess they're more resilient than their parents credit them to be.

Casting?  Two juveniles as the young girls, three other females (two doubling in roles), four men (again, two of them doubling).  Yes, TCB, you could easily play King Marcus, and could probably also handle the doubled role of Swifty Levine, a triceratops direct from the Borscht Belt.

At the moment I am slowly finishing my last almond macaroon, compliments of DR Jose.  I feel so lucky to get such wonderful treats sent to me.  The folks on this site sure are grand.

Once I finish this cookie I will be very good for the next few days and loose the few pounds I recently gained-blame it on Jose.  The trick is not to diet, but to eat properly and to burn off more calories than you consume.  Once the weight has been lost eating well and exercising have then become a way of life.  Also obsessing, as I do, about your weight helps.  The trick is not to gain more than a few pounds before going on a quick weight loss sprint.  It is so much easier to loose just a few pounds and doesn’t take long at all.

The wackiest or dumbest diet I have ever been on was the time I took diet pills.  I’m sure they were harmful to my system.

Donna Migliaccio (who was thrilled to hear of your coming Broadway debut, DR Jose) was marvelously arch as the vile Mrs. Gapp, one of the plotting T. Rexi, and loveable as Mamma Lucredzia, the corythosaurus who invents "Spaghetti," which is also the very good number that opens Act II.

Rounding out the cast was a Pteradon named Armando (doubling as the other T. Rex, Mr. Glut), and a couple of minor characters, again doubled, a cynical and French Pachycephalosaurus named Genevieve and a crafty Troodon named Gertrude.  (Gertrude gets a very clever comedy number in Act II, "I Don't Think You Really Want to Eat Me," another show highlight.)

The show has a lot of music, which is of course much better than the book at this stage.  Would it work on Broadway?  No.  Would it work off-Broadway?  Yes.  Would it work in regional theater?  Absolutely.  It's exactly the sort of show that kids need as an introduction to live theater.  (By the way, the theater was packed, with more kids than adults in the audience.)

Besides book-work, what the show needs is a cast recording.  It runs about ninety minutes, plus intermission; cut most of the book and you've got a good CD.  But, so far as Donna knows, there haven't been any nibbles.  It's a shame; most of the current cast lives in NYC, and would probably be thrilled to reconvene in a studio to give the show a longer life.

Or is that too blatant a hint?   ;D 8) ;)

Now, how was my day?

The Daddy was mostly very good today, except for his habit of tailgating at seventy-five mph.  I could have done without that.

William, the younger lad, was very very good today.  He was particularly happy to get a new Discman, which distracted him during the drive up to Philly and back.

The Mommy was on a hair-trigger most of the day.  If asked whether a glass of water was half full or half empty, she'd probably pour the water out out of spite.  And then blame you for her being thirsty.  Both lads were listening to their Discmen en route, but she still found several occasions to scream at them, because something was "bugging her."

Alex, the older lad, is sullen, insolent, and uses his Discman and GameBoy to withdraw from the world at every opportunity.  He takes great offence at anyone telling him that he can't always be in withdrawal mode, such as not wearing the headphones when he's out on the street (he couldn't or wouldn't hear traffic around him, not a good thing for a country kid to try in a big city).  Put Alex and Mommy together, you've got a screaming match.  Not fun.

Der Grampa was, for the most part, his usual adorable curmudgeonly self.

I survived.

The Hard Rock Cafe, Philadelphia, was the best choice we could have made for our post-theater meal.  Basically a burgers joint with a pretty decent bar and a rock memorabilia theme, we had onion rings, nachos, and burgers, except for me (decent fajitas) and the lads (spaghetti for William, who will eat almost anything, and a small pepperoni pizza for Alex, who eats amost nothing.)

We had a great server, knowledgable both in how to work a table and Rock and Roll.  Good combination, given where he works.

Which brings us back to one of the real problems: Alex's eating habits.  I don't know what kind of breakfast he had.  I can report that, after we left their house in Maryland (about 10:00 or so), der B and I witnessed him consume:

A candy bar
A Coke
One onion ring (with ketchup)
Three french fries (no ketchup)
Two bites of his pizza, and one piece of pepperoni
(removed from said pizza)
One piece of hard candy
One cupcake
And half of an ice cream cone.

This is a kid eight-and-a-half years old!  And he's in the middle of a growth spurt!  And all he's consuming is sugar and easily-converted-to-sugar starches!

And his parents are allowing this!  "Well, you can't expect a kid to eat what he doesn't want to!" is Mommy's explanation.  (Daddy rolls his eyes at this, but has been worn down too far to fight her by now.)

This is a kid who gets top grades, and is regarded at his school as an absolute phenomenon.  But he will not eat!

And no, it doesn't help when I compare how Mommy feeds him (big joke) with how my own mother took care of me.  Mommy works, and cannot be expected to cook a decent meal for her children.  (Actually, it's Daddy who does most of the cooking, she just doesn't control Alex at the table, or can't be bothered.)

The red flags are flying, and der Grampa and I are not at all happy.

Personally, I'm glad the Divine One has started this series of tribute discs.  While they are no substitute for the original recordings, I believe her when she says it is her intention to honor Miss Clooney and, more recently, Miss Lee.

That having been said, I think the tribute to Miss Peggy Lee is a better match for the Divine One's style.

I took his 6-year-old brother to the zoo this week, and we had a delightful time. He ate eggs and pancakes (no breakfast meats). He happily tried a new restaurant for lunch and a new (to him) food and loved it. And he did not drop the binoculars in the lake.

Good evening!

Back from a long day away from home. I spent about 2 hours calibrating and clearing up the set-up mess on the neighbor's HDTV. He had bought this top of the line HDTV and couldn't understand why the picture was crappy. He wasn't watching high definition for one thing; didn't even know the high def channels were farther down on the cable box listing. The DVD player was not set up for a widescreen TV or for progressive scan, and on and on and on.

He was so astonished by the picture when we finally got everything right (the first late afternoon NFL game on ABC was on) that he said he now saw the TV was worth the investment. He had been thinking he had wasted his money.

I played some of THE INCREDIBLES for the man and his wife, too, and they couldn't get over the difference in the picture. She had rented THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN for them to watch tonight. (I figured he'd want to watch another HD football game instead but said nothing.)

MILLION DOLLAR BABY was a noble effort. Nothing flashy, very spare and effecient filmmaking. Maybe the movie would have affected me more had I not already known about the last third of the movie. Wonderful performances all around.

Be that as it may, I couldn't help feeling that either THE AVIATOR or SIDEWAYS might have been my choice for the Best Picture Oscar last year rather than this. They're all well made and interesting films. THE AVIATOR was much bigger and flashier, but with that size and sizzle came some overdone sections and yet other sections that didn't dig deep enough to be fully satisfying.

SIDEWAYS and MILLION DOLLAR BABY had simplicity on their side, so it's not surprising the awards went as they did.

Sad to say, though, that I didn't get much chance to watch stuff on my TV today. I did get through THE GANG'S ALL HERE this morning. It looked beautiful even though I thought the flesh tones were a tad too pink. But the transfer is obviously going to be the one Fox will use for the DVD issue of the film slated for this year. It was without a speck or scratch, and the FMC used the stereo track to pipe sound through the three front speakers.

Argh! I just heard the clock strike midnight, and I have got to get to bed! I only got 5 hours last night due to having the actor's nightmare, so hopefully, I'll be out like a light the second my head hits the pillow.

Good night.

DR Matt, nice to see you, did you have any ice cream today?

No, Friday is my ice cream day, and I had French Vanilla frozen yogurt yesterday.

For dessert tonight at the restaurants, I had peanuts. (It was one of those steakhouses where you get peanuts at the table and can throw the shells on the floor. Not real classy but very southern.

Well I had ice cream today! I was a very bad boy and bought some Breyer's VERY CHOCOLATE CHERRY ice cream...I was buying some low carb ice cream, which tastes just fine, but the flavors are limited...and then I saw all the pink and chocolate on the other ice cream box and thoughts of high blood sugar simply disappeared from my brain! LOL!

And man is it good!

But aside from that, and the Chinese food...which is high in carbs...I have been doing good...sort of.

And I had originally planned to go through it this morning, but...  It shouldn't take long.  It just needs to get done before the pile get any bigger.

I also need to be in bed before 3:00AM tonight!  I need to be up sort of early to run some errands before heading in for the matinee.  And then after the evening show, I'm heading down to Richmond for the night/day on Monday.

In other words, tomorrow is going to be a long day for me.  So...

On a sort of sad note, we're losing one of our cast members, Kevin Burrows, to the national tour of Spamalot after tomorrow night's show.  Although we will sorely miss him, we wish him well - and congratulate him for getting such a great gig.  Our male swing will be going on for a few shows this week, but then our newest cast member should be on stage by Thursday night.  -And, yes, he will be coming in Monday and learning the show in just about ten hours of rehearsal!  -But he's more than up to the task, and he was also one of our "finalists" from the initial NYC auditions.

Just caught a bit of THE BIG LIFT with Montgomery Clift on our PBS. Should they have called it the BIG CLIFT?

I feel this is a severely underrated movie. Great views of postwar Berlin, unpredictable plot, acute political discussions. This movie is, I believe, in the public domain, so easily obtainable for cheap.

Speaking of holidays, which bring to mind the song "Holiday" by the Bee Gees, I heard a song in the store today that I immediately recognized as a Gibb composition, but something new. And TPunk informed me Barry was working with Babs again, and I realized the song was the fruit of that labor.

Well, I think the Gibbs are incredible songwriters, but this song sounded too close to their song "Too Much Heaven".

I have that new CD.  It's not too bad.  It has more up-tempo songs than some of her other recent CDs and not as many ballads, which makes it a little more interesting.  I love her voice but not when she sings nothing but ballads.  She needs to mix it up more...and continue to do so. ;D

Babs sings a song written for Andy Gibb on her new album.

Count me out of the Gibb fan club.. Great melodies - horrific lyrics!! (Especially those by Robin). Rare to find more than monosyllabic words!

And from the "It's About Freakin' Time" news, it looks like it's official!  The CD of the original Broadway cast recording of Baker Street (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CQQGVE/ref=ord_cart_shr/103-0605132-8786225?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance&n=5174) with Fritz Weaver and Inga Swenson is going to be released on January 31!!  Here's the picture from amazon.com's listing:

According to THIS (http://www.iclassics.com/productDetail?contentId=64413) link, there are two bonus tracks:  "Married Man," performed by Richard Burton and "Baker Street Mystery," performed by the Kai Winding Orchestra.

I agree Tomovoz, that the melodies are the name of the game as far as those guys go. I mean, I think "Night Fever" is an incredible song, but I have NO IDEA what the lyrics even are. On there earlier more understandable songs, the lyrics range from inscrutable to laughable. "I Started A Joke" springs to mind. But for sheer volume of melodies, those guys were unbelievable.

"I Started A Joke" is indeed my least favourite Bee Gees track.  "Saved By the Bell" isn't much better.  then you have lovely melodies like "words" and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart".

I've always prefered the songs Barry wrote for other people  -Streisand, Warwick Diana Ross & Kenny Rogers etc.

Cool cover.

It is...and seeing it on a large vinyl album is much better than a tiny (even new) CD.  The art of album covers is not what it used to be.
