Title: OPENING NIGHT 1

Well, you've read the notes, the notes have spoken to you, you have spoken to the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they may be attending our second opening night.

Bruce, I'm sorry you didn't feel it went as well as it could have.  I wish I could say who gives a flying fig what the critics think anyways, but I know in your business, it's a big deal.  However, if it's any consolation, I've never been one to give a flying fig what the critics have to say.   ;)  And besides the fact, because you know every little nuance of the play, things stood out more obviously to you than hopefully the audience, so I wouldn't count the critics out just yet.   ;D  It's still a brilliant play, and if Matt's fans, and your boardmembers here have anything to say, word of mouth will fly no matter what.

I hate that when that happens. I was going to comment that I have done soem community theater.

I woudl have to say one of the funniest experiences i had at an opening night was when I was in college and they were doing Richard Sheridan Brinsley's play, "The Rivals". They had this one poor gal in a very deep cut dress and she was very flat chested. They forgot to sew her lifts properly adn she bent over the props popped out

THe other opening was an outside play I was in. It was ceremoniously cancelled by a tornado baring down on us

I am my own worst critic, so we'll see what happens.  As Doris Day so beautifully put it, Whatever Will Be, Will Be.   I may or may not read them - haven't decided yet.  LA critics, whether the review is good or bad, are generally not the greatest writers in the world.  We lucked out for the most part on What If last year, but you know what - the reviews didn't help at all.  Word of mouth did, though.

We've got some interesting folks coming tonight, including Rose Marie, and my pal Richard Sherman.

Sounds like a lovely evening. I have started working with deaf students and theatre. WE hope to do Children of a lesser God. A native from North DAkota, Phyllis Frelich, made a name for her self in that play.

Congrats, BK, on opening night!

It seems like every opening night I've had as a director has seemed similar to what you describe. Energy a little off, despite a packed and enthused audience,  laughs from the night before suddenly missing, and actors begin to press a bit...

And what people have told me is Friday can be a weird night for theatre. Lots of people are coming from work, end of the week, people's minds are just settling into the weekend. They are ready to pay rapt attention to a show, but maybe not to open up and laugh just yet. Add to this the opening night jitters, and the heightened expecatations, and it can feel not quite "right", but then it turns out everyone in the house is enjoying themselves more than they let on.

Congratulations are in order for:

DECEIT - its author-director, cast and staff!  Press on to Night Two!

DR TPUNK for her birthday & ascension to God(dess)hood.

DRRODZINSKI for posting pics of the party.

DRJOSE for the Bargain of the year at Old Navy.

DRJOSE - all of those strange happenings last night could be attributed to Friday the 13th AND a full moon, I would imagine.  Very strange stuff....maybe today will be better.

Oh....and deaf gay bears.

Hmmmm.....best opening night....  Many exciting opening nights, but I guess the one of the best was the first time I directed JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT in 1991 or '92.   It went very well and I had a good young cast of High School & College students, but they were not as enthusiastic about the production as I was.

But on opening night - the audience was great, all of the numbers "hit" and all of the bits worked, and we used the Mega Mix from the (then) newly released CD of the London Cast with Jason Donovan (this was before it was ever done on tour, and my pianist and I transcribed it and worked it out from the CD) - and it was a GREAT success!

Hmmm....two worsts....both of them similar.

September, 2001.  I played Felix in a production of THE ODD COUPLE, a role I have always wanted to do.  My friend Ernie played Oscar.  Unfortunately, he didn't bother to learn his lines.

It was torture.  I never knew what he was going to say - I never knew what act or scene he was going to be in.  But it was my job to get us back where we were supposed to be and make sure we said everything we were supposed to.  Of course I had to do this while cleaning the apartment, having a sinus attack, and other prop handling duties.  I would do all right until he called ME by his name....  Which he did often all throughout the run - which included the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in the middle of our second week.

It was still fun - but I would like to do it again - even with Ernie, if he would remember his lines.

The second was just last September - when I played Jules in My Three Angels.  Again the guy playing the lead angel NEVER got his lines, and he would just stand there not talking - he was never in character - everything was a mess.....and at the end of the night he was convinced he had done a great job and "the audience never knew."

Oh, they did....it was a miserable run...

My opening night (and closing night) story:
My friend and I wrote a Christmas play once. We set it in a store with greedy children and weary parents. The Santa told the real story to the children. Our Santa was the most Santa-like man from our congregation. The children all knew their lines and their cues from the speaker before them. All went well when we practiced with the children. Santa, however, ad libbed in the performance, which threw the children off completely. They didn't know when they were supposed to speak.

Of all the shows I've been involved with, I think my favorite opening nights have been the school performances I used to direct.  My top two faves are The Wizard of Oz and The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf.

I adapted and shortened The Wizard of Oz so that it could be performed by 100 fourth graders on risers and a small stage.  The night of our performance, the kids were so excited, they all hit their notes, the energy was unbelievably high and the audience had the greatest time.  It was a magical evening.

The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf was special to me not only because the show was fabulous, but because it was a triumph for one girl in the cast.  I'd taken a chance in casting a girl who wasn't having the greatest year, academically, socially and at home, in a leading role.  It was a huge character role and she really struggled and was very unsure of herself.  She ROCKED the audience on the night of the performance.  I had teachers and staff coming up to me for weeks afterward saying they couldn't believe it was the same girl.  I can't think of an opening night better than that.

Best opening night I attended:  Memorial Day 1961 - Chicago - Ethel Merman (who had never toured before) in GYPSY.  She (and Chowsie) got a standing ovation as entrance applause.  I had always heard that she was wonderful on opening nights (but less so other times) and this was the case... although IMHO Angela was better in the role a dozen years later.

Good morning, all!  Today I get to sleep late and then play in Toyland at home.  Perhaps I'll even finish the Volume Two notes.

My weirdest opening night was when I still thought I would be an actor, and I was playng the Major General in a production of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE.  At the end of my entrance song, I was supposed to slam the tip of the sabre I was carrying into the ground between my feet.  Well, I did but I slammed the sabre into the tip of my bbot, vutting by big toe and performing the last 15 minutes of the act wondering if I was heavily bleeding heavily.  They bandaged my toes (I got two of them) and sent me back.  I spent the opening night party at the ER getting repaired and shot full of tetanus vaccine.

BK, I think you are your own worst critic and I suspect that reviews will be be better than you imagine.  Having been at the early reading, I can say the play's construction is solid, you play fair with the audience, the laughs are there, and all the twists are cleverly done.  It is, in my opinion, the best mystery you've written and it works very well both as a thriller and as theatre.  And, as I think directing may be the very best thing you do, I doubt that you've left anything to chance there and that the play covers all its bases neatly and smoothly with your usual polish and eye for detail.

It is tough to get laughs rolling when you have a third house full of critics, but they also can't be deaf to the intermission and after show buzz going on around them either.  And just because they weren't laughing doesn't mean they weren't enjoying it or with it.

Like Fred Willard's wife,  I think the play has the potential to be one of those solid regional theatre hits and get done everywhere.  You might call Sam French and get someone from there to see it.  It should definitely be published by them and, if it is put in their catalogue, it will get done all over the place for years to come.  But, of course, it should have a helathy professional run first...and I think it will.

As you said, bk, reviews didn't matter a whit to WHAT IF? so forget about reviews and hope the remaining performances entertain the audiences which is what it's all about anyway.

There is a critic in town who writes for a weekly free entertainment rag that has never given me less than a mixed review whether in a play or a musical. I can't do enough to please him no matter what I play, so I just stopped reading him altogether. Even if I got a good review, I'd have to entertain the fact that he was right the times he slammed me, and I don't think he was. So he is persona non gratia to me; I don't care what he writes.

The most exciting opening night I was ever a part of was FOREVER PLAID. After the show, we were swamped by people who weren't familiar with it, didn't know exactly what it was they were going to see, and were enchanted by the whole enterprise. My entire PLAID experience is probably the most fulfilling and rewarding experience I've ever had on stage: comedy that always worked, hugely enthusiastic audience reaction to the music and moves, and sentiment of the piece.

Like DR elmore, I slept in too.  Just needed the rest, wanted to sleep a bit more.  In any case...

It appears the rain has stopped for now - we had quite the downpour last night around 3:00am - the sound of the rain on the deck woke me up.  But, again, no rain outside now, just a lot of overcast.  So...  I'm thinking I might go for a short run - and put some of my new Old Navy workout clothes to good use.  We shall see...

Most miserable opening night I ever had was for WEST SIDE STORY. The production design had Sharks and Jets moving stage pieces around as scenes changed, and these things had to be as choreographed as any of the dances we did, and the night before we opened, I was at the theater past 1 a.m. getting the choreography for my piece in my head. Before the show opened that night, we had a set choreography rehearsal for each scene, but that was the first time we ever got it right - right before we opened, and I was SO nervous the entire performance hoping we'd do it right. It went fine, but I couldn't enjoy performing in the show because of the worries over that set change movement.

My favourite opening nights have usually concerned my own plays.  It was a great joy to see my Thin Man pastiche mystery, WHODUNNIT, DARLING? (which I wrote with pal, Larry Drake)  play before an opening night crowd, hearing them laugh in all the right places and generally seeing it work just as I suspected it would, reinforcing my own sense of dramaturgy and that I knew what the Hell I was doing.

Likewise with my Sherlock Holmes play, THE EBONY APE.  I had originally written the play to be done at my old alma mater at UK, but it was rejected by the head of the Theatre Department at the time, for what I found to be reasons that were utter flummery...most glaring of which was that it's huge two-story main set couldn't be designed and mounted on the university stage.

This I knew to be nonsense since I had performed in plays there that had had much more daunting sets.  I also had a ground plan of the theatre and stage and had consulted it when writing my play.  The theatre had plenty of wing space for everything.  The shop was right off the stage.  Many's the time we rolled multi-leveled wagon units on and off stage during a performance.

Anyway, the local theatre company decided to do it, were eager to do it; I produced with them and directed.  We also got some grant money. We had the largest turnout for auditions ever! We got unprecedented media coverage both paper and TV.

We ended up mounting the show in The Opera House...the major theatrical house where all the touring shows played (This was a grand old theatre which in the old days the Barrymores and others had toured in.  During my college years, it had been a 65-cent,  second-run, double-feature house where I had spent many an hour watching an odd assortment of films like The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes; Royal Hunt of The Sun; The Fixer (on a bill with Tarzan and the Great River); Support Your Local Sheriff, etc.).  Shortly after I left school, they had re-done the place and the first legit theatre piece to play there was Belle of Amherst with Julie Harris.

We ended up using a designer from the University theatre department to design the set that the dept. head said couldn't be done (the designer had his own things to prove to the head) and the play opened to great acclaim and went on to have a successful run.  We could have held it over, but the theatre was already booked.

The opening night party was a flurry of effusion and compliments. I got blissfully giddy on champagne.  And the head of the University Theatre Department came up to me to congratulate me and tell me how well the "impossible play to mount"  had played.  I love vindication.  We got a huge amount of press and publicity that could have been the University's had someone had the foresight to see the advantage of built-in  "successful alumni comes back to his school to do his play" publicity.  But too many petty issues and ego got in the way and deprived the University of that moment.

As for Opening Nights...

They can generally be a little weird for me, especially when I'm behind the piano, in the pit for the show.  -Where no one can really see me.  Yes, they hear me, but they don't see me.  So, I always feel a little left out at the party watching everyone else get congratulated and complimented, and then I get, "Oh, I didn't know you were here?  Did you see the show tonight?"  Umm... Well... If you read your program...

But that whole scenario comes with the territory.  -And this has even happened where I've done show that were "piano only".  In short, I guess I do have an ego.

;)

Otherwise, Opening Nights are also weird for me since I generally can't relax that much and have too good a time since I - and the rest of the cast and crew - have another show the next day - and sometimes it's a matinee (ugh).

At Arena - where I'm currently at - they have an "End of the First Week" party which is always a blast.  It's a Sunday night.  No performance on Monday.  And we've just finished a long stretch of shows during the opening weekend...  Whew!  And the best part of it it that it's just the cast and crew and orchestra.  We all know each other, and there's none of that "I have to be nice and smile" stuff in the air (like is usually there on opening night).

But, if I had to pick my favorite opening night, it would have to be, hands down, Sweeney Todd at the Kennedy Center three summers ago.  Just such a magical experience all around.  And it was also the first Opening Night of the Sondheim Celebration.  -And the closing night of that was also pretty spectacular.

And, if the gods of the theatre are smiling on us, I'll be able to experience my first Broadway Opening Night on April 13 with Lestat.  -Heck, I know I'll be giddy on March 11, our first preview - which will be my first Broadway First Preview.

Weird opening night:  I MD'd the premiere performance at Portland's swank Brunish Hall in the equally swank Center for the Performing Arts.  Anyway, it was three cabaret artists, including Susannah, whom I was MDing for (the two others had other people, damn them, damn them all to hell).  Anyway, they had asked me to play a little "seating" jazz, and Susannah and I had a funny "bit" about cell phones worked out (more about that in a mo).  So's, anyway, there I am playing some "cocktail piano" getting ready for our "bit", when one of the other singers pokes her head out from the wings and does one of those hilarious stage whispers that she thinks no one can hear, but of course everyone can.  It turns out her pianist had forgotten his music at the hotel and they needed me to "vamp" until he returned.  So of course I'm pulling tunes out of the vast recesses of my increasingly addled brain until I get the "OK" sign from them several minutes later.

Which brings us to the "cell phone bit."  Susannah thought it would be hilarious (as did I) if I set my cell phone on the piano during my "Seating Music," and she would then call me from her cell phone from the green room, interrupting my playing.  She would have her mic on, and would start "yakking" at me whilst I protested that I was trying to play, and we would get the "turn cell phones off" message delivered in a clever way.

Well, it was a brilliant idea save for one fatal error:

Susannah forgot to turn her mic on.

So, I'm playing, the phone rings, Susannah starts talking in my phone, but I can of course hear that her voice is not going out to the house.  So there I am, to kind of quote Comden & Green, "Talking to Myself," and trying, ever so subtly, to let Susannah know to turn on her friggin' mic.

The show went much better than the pre-show.   ;D

My favorite opening night was when my alma mater put on Cole Porter's Anything Goes....

It was in Dille Thrust Theater and the audience sat around the stage. Prior to the premiere they had significant problems with the audio and they ended up going to the twin Cities and getting loaner equipment from the Guthrie. Once the equipment was in place the chips fell into place.

As the audience came in and got settled they tropical sounds playing in the background and water lapping.

The other premiere was actually a highschool production that was not too bad and that was to Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. It was done as part of a masters project for the University of North DAkota's Theatre Arts program. I was impressed with the male lead's ability to handle the complexities of the score for someone so young.

IT was a great show... I hated the movie version. That was cringe worthy.

That was how I felt, Matt H, when I first saw it. I didn't want to even go. Plaid? I only went because my friend and I had season tickets to the community theater.  Before the first song was over, I just KNEW DR Sandra would love it. So I bought another set of tickets and took her to see it.

By the way, we'd love to see your photos.

The very first play I ever directed was Miss Margarida's Way. A one woman show. It was very difficult for me to know if the audience would laugh or not at the right places. But I had a very good actress named Rona Frame and was able to play off the audience. Since the play took place in a classroom, we actually did it in a classroom. We allowed people to walk in if they were late and she would berate them for being there. The biggest laughed came from something that was a mistake on my part. There was a point where I had here put on a pig snout. At least when I bought it I thought it was a pig snout. It turn out to be a the top part of a male organ. I kept it in because it killed them every night after that.

I'm going to do my best to get down to LA to see "Deceit", most likely the last Friday night as I have a show between now and then.  If the school I work at on Fridays has that Friday off, then it will be easy, if it doesn't, it will be a challenge.  More later....

Your story's very edifying and moving!
Thank you for sharing it with us!

Oh no!  I loved her.  She used to call the Drama Book Shop and talk.  I was quite fond of her.  She'd ask what new book were out, and everytime I mentioned a bio, she'd say, "No, he's (she's) dead.  It's too depressing."

RIP, Shelley.  You were always fun to talk to.

Instead, I put on the Biography episode concerning Hedda Hopper. Her career as a supporting character actress in silents and early talkies has always been more interesting to me than her more famous career as a gossip columnist. Had no idea that she had also dabbled in selling real estate and had sold land to the likes of Mae West and Bob Hope, both of whom were multi-millionaires partly because of their vast land holdings.

Copied from the internet this morning, announcements of some very tempting sets coming in April from Universal:

Marlene Dietrich: The Glamour Collection will include Blonde Venus, The Devil Is a Woman, Flame of New Orleans, Golden Earrings and Morocco.

Mae West: The Glamour Collection will include Go West Young Man, Goin' to Town, I'm No Angel, My Little Chickadee and Night After Night.

There will also be a Carole Lombard Glamour Collection, but I didn't copy down the names of those films.

I have been listening to the cast (?) album of  ClowAround. (A show that closed out of town)

The music that they used for the intro to the video promotion was Berlin's There's No Business Like Show Business.  Which had the lyrics "Even with a turkey you'll know will fold"... How prophetic. It opened and closed in Oakland, CA after 14 performances.

All the major papers were there last night - the Times, Daily News, Variety, etc.  Have no idea when the reviews will hit.  Tonight we have the LA Weekly and a few others, and tomorrow Backstage West.

Favorite Shelley Winters moment and I actually saw it! (June 20, 1984)

She was a guest on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson. The guest before her was Annie Potts. She was talking to Johnny and she turns to Annie and tells her she looks familar. Annie says we did a movie together and that Shelley played her mother. We had a big scene together in the cementary. Shelley says "Oh that was you? You are much better looking in person!"

Saturday evening greetings!  This first day of my vacation has been lovlier than lovely.  Started out at the stroke of midnight, when the ESPN2 broadcast of the US Figure Skating Championships finally began and I stayed up to watch the whole thing.  Most exciting for me was the bronze medal in ice dancing for Ryan O'Meara and his partner - one set of Ryan's grandparents live here in Middletown and are great folks we know from church.

After a little sleep, I did some pre-vacation errands, then DH Richard and I went to a PR event for our local public library at a nearby coffee shop, went out for lunch, and did more pre-trip errands.  Took a short nap, watched more skating, and am now getting serious about packing during the interval before the ladies' skating final.

Re my earlier post, about Fletcher cutting his ear.

Fletcher, the deaf Dalmatian, somehow caught his ear on his crate, and put a huge gash in said ear.  He was bleeding all over the place, and when we tried to catch him he thought he'd done something wrong, not to mention when we finally did catch him and tried to put pressure on his ear that just hurt that much more and the thought we were trying to punish him...

Does this sound a bit messy?  Let's just say he looked like a extra from Sweeney Todd.

We called the vet's office, let them know we were coming in.  I called work, let them know I'd be late, then got ready, putting an extra layer of clothes over my work clothes so I wouldn't look like I belonged in the meat department instead of a cashier.  Yup, when we got to the vet's Fletcher kept insisting on running around, scared by this point.  It took four of us to hold him down while he had a muzzle put on him and a temporary bandage on his ear.  Then they took him to an operating room, and der B drove me to work.  I was late by just half an hour, and busy as all get out.

Finally, der B picked me up after work, and Fletcher's in the car with him.  The ear looks great; we can hardly tell where the stitches went in.  He's still groggy from the sedatives he was given, of course.  But he's going to be fine.

Now we just have to get him to lose weight, something like forty pounds!

Pour Guiness into a pint glass. Float Baileys on top of Jamison in shot glass. Drop shot glass, carefully, into Guiness. Drink quickly before it curdles.

Yes very similar....

We have a coffee drink up here that is fun to make in the winter....

It called a Canadian Snowball....

In a large coffee mug, place a scoop of ice cream..
add black coffee
mint or peppermint flavoring
whipped cream
drizzle with chocolate syrup or chocolate shavings

YOu can add a bit of windsor whiskey if you want...

I must admit Sasha Cohen has never been my favorite, but she was quite exquisite tonight.

My favorite Shelley Winters' films are THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, A PLACE IN THE SUN, A PATCH OF BLUE, and, supremely THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER.

That shot of her underwater remains one of the most surreally haunting shots in cinema history.

Have had a full evening of skating. When I went down, I watched the men's national championships which I had the DVR catch since I was on the phone and later computer while they were going on.

I was delighted with the results and felt the three most deserving skaters were indeed the top three finishers. While none of them skated an entirely clean program today, they were all interesting and lyrical, and I enjoyed them.

My favorite skater of the day finished in 5th place - Scott Smith. I'll look for him at future national championships.

While the women were skating live tonight, I watched a couple of shows on the DVR. First up was MONK which had a fun case and a guest starring role for Malcolm McDowall. Good fun and a surprise revelation at the end.

NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, for me!  I'm also right fond of DOUBLE LIFE.

I know this has nothing to do with Shelley Winters. But.....
BK produced the original concept album for the musical version of The Night of the Hunter.

Next, I watched SUPERNATURAL. My local WB station preempted the show on Tuesday night to show Charlotte Bobcats NBA action, and just tonight got around to showing the episode. Sadly, they don't have the proper equipment to record in high definition, so the recording was the standard definition version of the episode. Still, great tension and a most surprising ending.

Tomorrow, the WB repeats the episode in high def, but with so many things coming on tomorrow at 9 (HOUSEWIVES, '24,' L&O:CI), I figured I'd better watch this tonight.

Then I watched LAW & ORDER from Wednesday night. The show has not been up to par since the death of Jerry Orbach, but the episode was still entertaining and featured more trial than usual.

Like the men, none of the women were able to sustain a perfectly clean program, but both Sasha Cohen and Kimmie Meisner deserved their placements. And I liked Emily Hughes' routine though it didn't have the degree of difficulty or the elegance of the other two ladies' programs.

Still, if Sasha turns professional after the Olympics and Worlds this year, it's going to be an interesting battle between the ladies behind her now.

I got back from a game of Scrabble® with my sister and my niece.  I came in third! ;) I was creamed.  But it was fun.  My sister bought the official Scrabble® dictionary but we have "house rules" where anyone can look up a word before you play it.  That way, there is no challenging of words, because we all know it's correct!  Of course, when we play with our parents, we play the game correctly...no "house rules."

I had a wonderful evening at the First annual Siouxland Short Film Festival. It was a smashing success.  They had 70 submissions, there were 2 cuts and tonight we saw the 10 finalists in the regional division and the 5 finalists in the Grad School division.  There was a huge turn out and the quality of the films was fantastic.  What a fun thing to have here.

Hello, folks. Just popping in to say hi and let you know that I've been E&T because of a stupid mix-up with the cable company that installed our new cable modem. I haven't had internet at home since Monday as a result and we've been so swamped at work that I've not had a chance to check in during the day. I'm still here (a FOLLIES reference) and as soon as I'm able to scrounge up a few minutes during the day, I'll post some more.

Hope you're all well!

There is a group of folks here called the Sioux City Film Institute that decide what independent films to bring into the Orpheum, helped screen the submissions with this film festival and the Silent film festival etc.   So tonight I asked about getting involved and was welcomed into the group. I am really looking forward to it.

I'll be there at Barrymore's on Monday evening if I don't have to go to the office on Monday, which I won't be sure about until Monday morning.  Tuesday Jan. 17th is a deadline for tax estimates (normally, that deadline is Jan. 15th, but because of the 15th being a Sunday and the 16th beng the holiday, the 17th becomes the due date this year) and we're doing some complex clients' estimates at the last minute.

Ginny and Ben and anyone else (whether you're going to the Barbara Cook concert or not), are we still looking at possibly getting a drink or something after the Barbara Cook concert on Friday night?

Good Evening!

...Well, I would have posted a bit sooner after getting home from the show, but we had a "little" electrical problem upstairs where the main computer is set up...  And, apparently, the house down the street had a major electrical problem earlier today... Their whole circuit/fuse box blew up... Thankfully, everyone is OK... However, when all the homeowners on the block went out to see what was happening, they all realized that they all have been having electrical problems lately... And then someone found that one of the outlets in my parents' house was on the verge of shorting out... YIKES!!!  So...  An electrician is coming out tomorrow to check out this house and the other ones in the neighborhood... And then I'm guessing the homeowners association will be speaking to the builder on Monday...

:-\

But, again, everyone is OK.  -And I spent a good chunk of time getting the computer re-set up upstairs - and only plugged in what was necessary.

-And I checked the smoke detectors too.

George - We just got our copy of the Dessa Rose Cd as well.  It looks like they took what was done for LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA's CD, with the paperback booklet that came with that, and went a step further to deal with there being two CD's.  Very impressive packaging, and really looking forward to listening to it since I loved the show (saw it three times).
Title: Re:OPENING NIGHT 1

FJL, I bought the songbook to Dessa Rose last month, not realizing that it and the CD were available!  I want to listen to the songs that are in the songbook, then the whole thing.  I LOVE Flaherty's music!  Ever since I first heard of Once On This Island, I've gotten all of their shows and the songbooks that go with it.  I even have Lucky $tiff (as recorded by our very own BK!) and almost sang the song "Nice" with a friend of mine here in Olympia.  We were good.  We just never had the opportunity to sing the song.  Darn.
Title: Re:OPENING NIGHT 1
Post by: FJL on January 14, 2006, 09:49:40 PM
I wonder, though, if packaging like the Dessa Rose CD packaging, where there's a book that contains the entire script (although clearly specifying it's not the performance version), will cut into sales of the script by people who buy published scripts for reading pleasure or for their libraries.  But maybe that's not a big enough market to worry about
Title: Re:OPENING NIGHT 1
Post by: George on January 14, 2006, 09:51:29 PM
I would think that it might (mind you, I said might) increase sales, because if people have to be completists, they'd get every different version that's available. ;)

One of my absolute favorite Christmas songs was written by Ahrens and Flaherty, "All Those Christmas Clichés."  Christiane Noll sang it on "A Christmas Survival Guide" but she sang it a little too humorously (in my opinion).  I'm guessing that it was written for "A Cabaret Noel," sung by Lainie Kazan (who was in A&F's My Favorite Year, playing the same part that she played in the movie).  Lainie's version of "Clichés" is definitive!  It's also one of my favorite A&F songs. :)
Title: Re:OPENING NIGHT 1
Post by: George on January 14, 2006, 10:09:42 PM
And I think that Christiane is just too young to sing the song.  Someone of her tender years just doesn't have the history in life that I think the song requires.

Shelley Winters...

I still remember when she was on "Inside the Actor's Studio" - back when they had actual actors on there - and she "performed" a bit of Shakespeare.  It was so incredibly moving and real.  And everyone in the auditorium seemed to be amazed too.  -She was demonstrating how Shakespeare's "language" can be "our language" too.  She succeeded in her demonstration.

...And "A Place In the Sun".

DR MBarnum - Glad to know that you found some bargains at Old Navy too!  I wasn't originally planning on heading back there today between shows, but since I had to head out in that direction anyway...  I'm glad I did... 2 t-shirts, 2 sweatshirts, 1 polo shirt, 1 fleece pullover, 1 pair of gloves and 1 knit cap... All for just under $25.00!

*And as for trying things on before buying them... I think I picked up that very common sense tip from watching "What Not To Wear", and it's some of the best advice I've ever gotten in regards to my wardrobe.  Not only does it end up saving you some money in a lot of cases, but it also saves you from having a "fashion emergency" day.

Alas, there was a little dip in the energy during tonight's show due to the Redskins' loss... Ah, well...  *Of course, our closing night happens to be Superbowl Sunday, so...

However, Brad Oscar hosted a watching party at his apartment between shows, and they had TONS of food leftover... And they brought all that food back to the green room... The empanadas were particularly good.
