Well, you've read the notes, you know all about the homicide that is being perpetrated and who the perp is, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - their cud is killing them, and they're hollering bloody mooder.

The Vatincate was group of disgruntled
Cardinals in the 14th Century. The members had the audacity to think that the Pope was indeed fallible. They were thought (but not really proven) to be hatching a plot to replace the Pontiff with a far more liberal candidate (not actually a member of the eight or "ate"). The Plot was discovered by spies of Bishop Lawrence of Sardinia. Members of the "Ate" were tortured by the Vatican officials. Bastinado was the torture of first choice but was replaced when it was realised that at least 5 of the accused actually enjoyed the pain. The members eventually confessed with the threat of an all day session listening to the latest round of would be eunuch choristers in "Roman Idol" - a popular entertainment of the day.
There were calls for execution but excommunication and transportation to the mines of Salzburg was the eventual outcome. It was rumoured that two of the ex-cardinals eventually escaped to Koblentz and for reasons best known to themselves, joined a group of touring "entertainers" known throughout middle Europe as The Rhinemaidens.

Hi Vixmom.. If there are any historical errors, blame Jose.
-
hmmm favorite detectives etc...
I do love the Hercule Poirot as played by David Suchet
and Sherlock Holmes as played by Jeremy Brett
and SIR Derek Jacobi as Cadfael,
Detective Christopher Foyle as played by Michael Kitchen, (Foyles War) , Roy Marsden as Adam Dalgleish, John Thaw as Inspector Morse,
I am not sure if Leo McKern as Horace Rumpole would be included in this category as he is a lawyer, but he does do a lot of investigating and discovery so I am adding him in!
Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, David Jason as DI Morse,
and of course James Garner as Jim Rockford... not because the series was particulary good but because James Garner always makes me smile
-

Well you've obviously done your research I am sure its all absolutely accurate!!

Is it still raining? Has the weather gotten cooler and are the brushfires out?

Well I am going to wake the other peoples in this house and get the day started (its 6:40 AM on Thursday morning here!)
Have a great afternoon (evening? I just can't get the exat time difference!)Tom!!
-
~~~~~HAVE A GREAT DAY VIBES~~~~~~
for DR Jason!!!
-
Good morning, all! I don't have much today, chiefly a trip to the Horace Mann School to see goddaughter Charlotte's dance recital this afternoon.
Before that, I've got a trek to the office for some Toyland work and then the NYPL for another look at the new Kurt Weill Edition.
TOD:
Helen Mirren in PBS Prime Suspect series
John Nettles and Daniel Casey in Midsomer Murders
Imogene Coca as Grindl
Nick and Nora Charles
In books, I've enjoyed the Sir John Fielding mysteries even though I feel Bruce Fielding sometimes slips from his 18th-Century language and the Jane Austen detective series.
-
Glad to hear you have rain, DR Tom. I hope it helps the fire situation. We'll be in your position by April, they tell us.
We are now at Day 100 with no rain.
-
Der Brucer and I were talking about things like the TOD just a couple of nights ago, over dinner. He'd opined that the current rage for police procedurals on television would soon fade - they're running out of interesting new stuff, and will be repeating themselves soon. So what would make for interesting fodder for the detective show, we wondered.
Well, producers could return to the good ol' detective, the guy who makes his living poking his nose into cases and solving them. We just need some interesting detectives to do the detecting, that's all.
Such as?
Well, how about David Branstetter (http://www.thrillingdetective.com/brandstetter.html), the death claims investigator Joseph Hansen wrote about? Der B thought that he would make a great detective, being an ordinary guy working in the Los Angeles of the past.
I wasn't quite as sure Branstetter would work as a series lead. Something told me producers and network suits would say, sure, great idea, but let's give ol' Dave a girlfriend.
Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins would be an easier sell.
-
I had a 7:45 wakeup call from our wandering keyboard boy DR Jose; he was bumped from his original flight to San Francisco this morning and he's now arriving around 11:20. I've alerted the media, the police and the bars.
And for the record, I was out of bed at 6:45 am! And I'm still not awake.
Thursday greetings!
TOD: My DH Richard is a huge fan of DVD mystery series and here are some of the sleuths I've grown to love:
Lord Peter Wimsey, played by Ian Carmichael
Inspector Barnaby, from Midsomer Murders, played by John Nettles
Nero Wolfe, played by Maury Chaykin
My favorite sleuths appear in mystery series books:
Karen Pelletier, a Massachusetts college professor in a series by Joanne Dobson
Glynis Tryon, the town librarian in a series by Miriam Grace Monfredo
Anneke Haagen, an Ann Arbor computer consultant in a series by Susan Holtzer
Theodosia Browning, a Charleston, SC, teashop proprietor in a series by Laura Childs
-
How could I forget Peter Falk as Lt Columbo!!
Excuse me sir, I'm sorry I don't mean to bother you, there's just been this little thing that's been nagging me, you know how it is sir, well I was just wondering.....
and then BAM he lowers the boom!!
Love it!!
I vaticinate for a living at $120 an hour.
-
Jim Hutton's Ellery Queen and The Snoop Sisters....both already mentioned, but they are my favorite TV detectives. I will also add Paul Drake.
TV Cops - Reed & Malloy, of course. Followed by Sgt. Friday and his various sidekicks.
Sam Spade - Humphrey Bogart, Charlie Chan - Warner Oland, Sherlock Holmes - Basil Rathbone, Robert Stephenson
Books...hmmm. Nancy Drew, Ellery Queen, the Hardy Boys....
-
I shall have to give the Mitchell LP a spin, DRELMORE, because the songs on it were not familiar to me.
I guess DRJOSE is flying over right now!
-
Call me unsophisticated, uneducated, a country bumpkin....
I just don't "get" the significance of this piece of "art"
PARIS - A Frenchman who attacked and damaged “Fountain,” a urinal declared a work of art by Dada pioneer Marcel Duchamp, was ordered on Tuesday to pay a fine of $262,700.
A Paris court also gave Pierre Pinoncelli, 77, a three-month suspended sentence for taking a hammer to the absurdist artwork, the second time he has attacked it since 1993. The attack last month left the ceramic urinal slightly cracked.
Duchamp was a leader of the Dada movement, an avant garde “anti-art” school of the early 20th century that mocked conventional standards, and “Fountain,” made in 1917 — is considered one of the most influential artworks of its kind.
“This was a wink at Dadaism,” Pinoncelli told the court in his defense. “I wanted to pay homage to the Dada spirit.”
-
Call me unsophisticated, uneducated, a country bumpkin...
OK, since you asked,
You're unsophisticated, uneducated, and even though you live in a thriving metropolitan area (who knew Long Island was a thriving metropolitan area), you're a country bumpkin!
Well, you did ask ;D
-
As for Beyonce's hair....my guess is that THIS is the look they were going for - from this 1962 photo of MM....at least both of the waves are headed in the same direction, but something went wrong.
My guess is the hairdresser did the best he could - but I surely wouldn't want to be in charge of hair and makeup on THAT movie....although I am sure each and every person involved has his/her own retinue and staff.....
Good morning!
Beautiful day here with cloudless skies. It is very cold and not likely to warm up much today - mid 40s is probably all we can hope for. Somewhat warmer forecast for tomorrow.
-
Fictional detective favorites would have to include Sherlock Holmes, the master of all, and Agatha Christie's two marvels Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Tommy and Tuppence in print are not among my favorites though I did like their TV incarnations.
Love Kinsey Milhone in Sue Grafton's alphabet series, but many of them end up being crime dramas rather than full blown mysteries. The early ones (especially B and D are my favorites along with the later M).
I've tried to get into P.D. James' books but I find them tediously detailed. She's a fine writer but just not my cup of tea.
-
As for TV detectives, Jim Hutton's Ellery Queen and Helen Hayes and Mildred Natwick as the Snoop Sisters likewise top my list, and I'm really craving to see these shows again. I only have one episode of ELLERY QUEEN on tape and none of THE SNOOP SISTERS. If Universal won't released these on DVD, I'm hoping they'll eventually show up on the new SLEUTH cable channel which now is running THE A-TEAM, MIAMI VICE, HOMICIDE, and DRAGNET (old color and the more recent reincarnation ).
I also enjoy Peter Falk's Columbo and Angela Lansbury's Jessica Fletcher.
On the British side:
David Suchet as Hercule Poirot, Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, and Ian Carmichael as Lord Peter Whimsey
-
Movie detectives:
William Powell as Philo Vance and Nick Charles
Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes
Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade
Albert FInney and Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot
Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple (not at all like the books but very entertaining)
Dick Powell and Robert Mitchum as Philip Marlowe
-
Page Two TOY STORY Dance!!!
-
I'm having lunch out with friends today but I should be back in time to squeeze in the three hour mystery shows from last night.
And I guess I should add Kristin Bell's Veronica Mars to my list of favorite TV detectives.
Raindrops keep falling on my head. Big, giant raindrops the size of Mack trucks. I think I'm at my capacity, folks. If my mother calls me one more time and wants to 'discuss' things or ask any more questions, I think I'll implode. She called last night at midnight to check up on me, and then pronounced that there were to be no more secrets and if there were any more to get them out in the open right now - be done with it. Bottom line, I may or may not be 'out' to my mother now. I don't know - it was an out of body experience and I'm not sure what I told her. This, in addition to all the crap that started going down on Tuesday, has just about done me in and the anxiety that I'm feeling is overwhelming.
DR TPunk, a trained social worker, was kind enough to provide me with a crisis hotline number, so I called them at around 1am because I was having a panic attack (not as bad as the one I had at work Tuesday, but close) and the lady on the other end of the phone tried to calm me down so I could at least get to sleep. I'm so exhausted right now, both physically and emotionally, that sleeping shouldn't have been a problem, but with a zillion things running through my mind, I had to talk. And talk. And talk.
I don't know what the future holds for me and my family. I'm so tense and anxious right now thinking about the discussions we will inevitably have and how they may react to what I will have to eventually tell them that I can't stay focused on anything but myself, which is the last thing I want to think about right now. SERENITY NOW!!!
You guys have all been so wonderful these past few days. I really appreciate it and need it. I need to feel like SOMEONE'S gonna stand by me. It's nice to know I can depend on HHW.
-
Hey, DR Jason, you can depend on us! We are all thinking about you and sending non-anxiety vibes.
I don't know what the issues are that you are dealing with, but I will bet that once you clear the air with your family it will be a huge load off of your shoulders.
Take care buddy and accept this big hug from me!
For those who did not recognize her in that photo from the film version of "Dreamgirls," the girl on the right is Jennifer Hudson, one of the "divas" from two "American Idols" ago....she was up there with Fantasia, Latoya London and Diana DeGarmo. Jennifer got ousted much too early. In fact, she got better each week she performed and some of the guest artists whose music was being featured were totally blown away by her.
She is playing Effie in the film...and that's a HUGE step for her career, I think.
-
Re: last night's LOST i think i sort of agree with DR MattH. Last night's show was not as good as most past shows. Most of the shows recently have ended with a sort of gasp/shocking ending. Last night's show didn't have that.
Also not too much happened during the show. And Charlie's backstory wasn't that interesting. Although I do think his backstory was probably the most realistic. I mean some of them have been way out there (kate a murderer, hurley a cursed lotto winner ...).
I wonder if something bad will happen to baby aaron though.
-
Re: Last night's "Lost":
SPOILER
SPOILER
This episode was quite unsettling for me. I found Charlie's backstory quite interesting and much more moving than most of the ones we are treated to. His vivid dreams are most likely induced by whatever power the island is under. I thought it extremely interesting that he would be so persistent about the baby in view of the character assassination everyone was willing to place upon him "presuming" he was using drugs. John Locke was especially pretentious and over-the-top last night...it totally shocked me that he felt he had the right to judge Charlie as harshly as he did...first telling him he had lost the right to be trusted (as if Locke hasn't been far more underhanded and conniving) and then to violently strike Charlie, who was quite evidently distressed and in need of understanding. Locke is normally the one who provides such insights...last night he was curiously devoid of same. From the previews, it seems Locke is bent upon a course of tyranny. Interesting, too, was Claire's genuine concern over what Charlie claimed was his reasons for being upset about the baby...that she went to Eko for baptism, and submitted to it herself, speaks a great deal about her belief in Charlie, regardless of how she has acted toward him.
There are strange things brewing on the island...and last night's episode seemed a harbinger of rough times ahead.
-
Jason, you know I'm a only a phone call away!!
((((HUGS))))
RE: LOST
Vixdad and I now appear to be the ONLY humans in the western hemisphere who have never seen this show.
We were speaking to his parents the other day, who live in the middle of nowhere in northwest Canada, who get only three TV channels, one of them in French.. and THEY have been watching the show avidly
We are so out of touch....
-
AS long as I'm "confessing" We never saw Sex in the City, The Sopranos, or Survivor either.....
Yes, Jason many of us are here for you if you need us. Keep us posted. Some of us have gone through what you're obviously struggling with now and may be able to help.
Good luck!
Re: "Invasion"
SPOILER
SPOILER
Last night's episode was deftly constructed -- a violent shooting, lots of blood...and the obvious requirement for a blood transfusion for a "changed" one that everyone who watches the show KNOWS won't work unless it's from some other "changed" one.
It was a lot of manufactured hyperdrama with very little insights or new information.
There were some good moments for the main characters, but what's with letting Tom and Mariel off the hook, so to speak, suddenly portraying them as stabilizing influences on the other hybrids. Didn't we just last week see proof that Tom is arming and training hybrids for warfrare?
Overall, it seemed like a stall for time...and I'm not at all clear on what they want us to think about Tom and his role as a hybrid...which is probably the "intent."
Oh, no. I'm sure BK has never seen it (at least, he's never mentioned watching any episodes and he usually keep us informed of any TV he does watch), and there appear to be quite a few others here who don't watch it, too. You're in good company.
-
Vibes to you, Jason. I obviously don't know your specific situation, but it just so happened that when I was 30, I had a really drastic "outburst" in an office environment, which just happened to have followed a week of a fairly stressful family situation. Not exactly what's happening to you, but some parallels. It ended up changing my life around, all for the better. I wish good things for you.
DR Jason, turn off the phone and let messages from your mother take over for the nonce. You're going through enough angst, it appears to me, to let the famlly coast on theirs for a while without you. This is when sex and drugs used to work for me.
Was anyone else addicted to the Happy Hollisters series of books as a kid? Was this series ever made as a TV show or film, I wonder.
Encyclopedia Brown was also a real favorite when I was a kid.
As an adult, I watched Murder She Wrote a lot, but I kept getting an uneasy feeling about Jessica Fletcher, given that any time she showed up, somebody got killed. Not the greatest person to be around. :)
-
I'm up, I'm up.
I don't watch TV at all, save to see how low Alias can sink. I have never seen episodes of any shows except The Sopranos and Curb Your Enthusiasm (and only two seasons of the latter). I know The Sopranos is coming back, but frankly they have been incredibly stupid about their audience, taking, what, over a two-year hiatus? I'm afraid I won't be returning to the show. I've never seen Sex and The City, Raymond, Friends, or any other series of the last ten years - I saw two episodes of Seinfeld.
I think Angela Lansbury is great, but I thought she phoned in a coy second-rate performance on this series. I never understood the success of it.
My brother's theory was that she was a serial killer who kept planting false clues and getting innocents arrested in her stead!
-
Actually Jason... I found this at this at the same site where I found these "useful" excercises for bk...
This however, may actually be useful:
The roots of Vedanta philosophy ask us to believe in ourselves and believe in God. Karma yoga, the yoga of action, is knowing your gift and using it. No one can force you to do what's not for you. In the Bhagvad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna, "It is better to follow your own calling imperfectly than follow another's perfectly. If death should come while following your own path, this is surely better than living with the fear and anguish of following a false path." (3:35)
When we're forced to do something that is against our own nature, our soul is unhappy, there is no peace. When the soul is unhappy, pain begins to trouble the body as well. Rather than change your ways to conform with the world, you must eventually find a way to express your truth from your heart regardless of the world.
Does Dominos "do" a chocolate pizza?
No, but Papa John's does a cinnamon pizza that's amazing.
There's a Dunkin Donuts down the street...perhaps I should go pig out on bowties and blueberry cakes.
-
HowEVER will the show survive?
Hard to imagine.
DR Jason - It's not a pizza, but here's a chocolate pie that's served by one of my favorite restaurants in Cincinnati. My thoughts are with you.
-
Are there any plans to celebrate Mozart's 250th birthday tomorrow?
-
A cinnamon pizza? Hmmmm...sounds interesting.
-
My God, I could eat a whole pile of that chocolate pie, Ginny. It looks amazing.
One of the things I hope to get out of therapy is an alternate to binge eating to make myself feel better. Until then, though, that pie looks really, REALLY good!
I went back to Academy this afternoon, after my lunch. I haven't been in a while. Guess what was waiting for me when I arrived,
A Naxos CD of Gracie Fields, Looking on the Bright Side. We are big Gracie Fields fans. For those of you who don't know her, this site can give you some information (I'm sure Vixdad knows about her also)
Gracie Fields (http://www.graciefields.freeserve.co.uk/)
I also found the recent DRG release of the 1986 Debbie Allen Sweet Charity
and my best purchase today is the hard-to-find 1964 London cast recording of Little Me with Bruce Forsyth and Swen Swenson (he's from the original cast). It has Rich Kids Rag which is not on the Broadway cast album.
I will be busy listening this afternoon. Go way, don't bother me ;)
I have BIBBIDI BOBBIDI BACH. It's very interesting.
Happy birthday to Wolfy tomorrow! I think I'll listen to his Requiem again tonight. It seems appropriate, somehow, and I'll follow it up with "Regina Coeli."
Whatever do you mean, DRS ELMORE & RLP?
-
DR BEN - when Gracie Fields sings "I Took Me Harp to a Party" - I am ON THE FLOOR!!
That and "The Biggest Aspidistra in the World" make me laugh and laugh. I first heard that at my grandmother's oh so many years ago. It was on a 78 RPM (remember those?). My grandmother came over from Sheffield when she was 11 years old (in the early 1900s) and never got to go back for a visit but she kept her love of England strong.
I misspoke about Sweet Charity. It's the EMI original 1986 release with not a shred of notes or anything except a picture of Miss Allen and a track listing and small shots of various cast members, such as Michael Rupert.
I went back to Academy this afternoon, after my lunch. I haven't been in a while. Guess what was waiting for me when I arrived,
A Naxos CD of Gracie Fields, Looking on the Bright Side. We are big Gracie Fields fans. For those of you who don't know her, this site can give you some information (I'm sure Vixdad knows about her also)
Gracie Fields (http://www.graciefields.freeserve.co.uk/)
If he doesn't I am sure his folks do!
and now some busy work for the masses:
Subject: Math Problem
1. Grab a calculator. (You won't be able to do this one in your head).
2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area code).
3. Multiply by 80.
4. Add 1.
5. Multiply by 250.
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number.
7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250.
9. Divide number by 2.
Do you recognize the answer?
Jack, don't know if you're interested but here is a Web site with the lyrics to I Took Me Harp to a Party and The Biggest Aspidistra in the World and other comic pieces by English women comedians
JRand55, have you worn your kurta whilst watching a Bollywood movie yet? Meena is waiting for your entrance!
Here is the Indian outfit I want!
(http://www.homeindia.com/catalogue/apprmen/sherwani/images/21161l.jpg)
-
I think the hat would look smashing on me!
-
Of course if I went out in public dressed like that, in Salem, I would likely get smashed...and not in a good way! LOL!
-
However, this one is more in my price range (the outfit...not the model).
Just $74.95 + postage!
-
I have a version of I TOOK ME HARP TO A PARTY around here somewhere. Very funny, as I recall.
-
Thanks for the link DRBEN... Biggest Aspidistra is also a comic gem!
DR CP do you shelve your LP's in the library with your books?
-
DR BEN - when Gracie Fields sings "I Took Me Harp to a Party" - I am ON THE FLOOR!!
Miss Fields co-stars in HOLY MATRIMONY, one of the sources for DARLING OF THE DAY.
-
DRMBARNUM - no, I haven't worn my Kurta yet....and I just bought another one of the same style...this one brown instead of peach.
I think the red one With the Turban from the first one would be a perfect out fit for you to wear to the Courts Hollywood Show.
-
I think the hat would look smashing on me!
I hope you can find a bag to match.
-
Miss Fields co-stars in HOLY MATRIMONY, one of the sources for DARLING OF THE DAY.
Yes, she does.
And I can't think of Miss Fields, without then conjuring up Lady Peale and her Faeries at the Bottom of her Garden. ;D
-
Beatrice Lillie often referred to herself as a mezzanine soprano.
-
I hope you can find a bag to match.
I will NOT say anything.... :P ::) :P
-
DR Vixmom, it didn't work for my phone number.
I think you have many zeros in your last four digits, then it doesn't know where to place the actual number! It was close but it got it as 0004 instead of 0400.
On TV, I loved Hart to Hart, Remington Steele, The Rockford Files and Moonlighting. As much as I loved Angela Lasbury, I never watched "Murder, She Wrote." I don't know why. :-\
There is also Nick & Nora and Sherlock Holmes, the musicals. ;)
NICK & NORA has a good score, but it was not a good show!
Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk were the first Nick and Nora I ever saw.
Jason, as Shakespeare wrote:
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell; my blessing season this in thee!
JRand, no...some record albums are in a media closet I have off the TV room in the new house...where all the CDs, DVDs, Videos, and film reference books are.
On the long bookcase that runs along the back wall of the library I have a seating bank (with more shelves below). I can lift up the seat in front of each case and underneath, behind the shelves of the seating bank, and below the main part of the book cases is concealed storage three feet long, two and half feet high and deep under each of the five bookcases along that wall. Inside will go my comics, various other periodicals I've collected over the years, and my 78 rpm records since my hand-cranked Victrola is in the library.
The rest of the records (those which I have on CD or just those I rarely play anymore) are stored in particle-board bookcases in the large storage area of the house which will also be the gym and crafts area.
-
Thank you, George.
Ben, is the Brit Little Me an LP or CD?
I'm taking a break - just about finished (I think) with the longer promo spot, at least it's roughed out - I can already see things to adjust, and I have to go in search of a better line or two from the tapes I haven't seen yet. I'll wrap up the long spot by two, then start on the shorter spot, which should go a lot faster. My goal? Both spots roughed out in decent shape by five. Then I'll polish them when I get home from the show.
Oh, Lordy! I've been listening to the OCR of DESSA ROSE this afternoon, and--even though I knew what she was going to say before she said it--LaChanze's final line has made me all verklempt.
*Choke*
-
Due to q quick lunch, I was able to squeeze in some SUPERMAN episodes from the second disc of the set along with the three shows from last night.
Enjoyed all the SUPERMAN episodes, especially "Superman in Exile." The reactor that makes Superman radioactive is a fairly laughable special effect now, but when I was a kid, that machine scared me to death.
BONES had two cases, the more interesting a which took the scientist and the FBI man (Bones and Booth) to LA to investigate a prostitute who had been torn apart by coyotes. What made the case interesting was the scientist's utter disdain for cosmetic surgery and the beauty of each person's natural uniqueness. Nice to hear it spoken aloud, even if it was by one of the loveliest actresses on TV.
-
VERONICA MARS had more of a caper and less of a mystery this week, not one of my favorite episodes. However, there was one sequence featuring Veronica and her dad which brought tears to my eyes.
-
And CSI: NY also had two cases to investigate. The better of the two involved the death of a subway surfer. Who knew people actually do this?
The other case involved the death of a stockbroker with a pretty obvious solution.
-
What is this Dessa Rose thing everyone is talking about? I am from Indiana, I don't know what that is. What is it? Is it based on anything? Is it like Delta Dawn?
-
DR MATTH - so how are things looking on the date front?
-
RE: LOST
Vixdad and I now appear to be the ONLY humans in the western hemisphere who have never seen this show.
I've only seen it once, and that was more than enough for me. Such is horseracing.
-
I was wondering as well...about that date front that is...not Dessa Rose.
Although...wait a minute...who is Dessa Rose?
-
I remember well your dismissive comment re the plot line and acting DR Jed. We have not watched it at all.
I respect your taste in such things. Of course DP Colin and I may be the only people in the Southern Hemisphere not to watch it.
My copy of "Dessa Rose" has yet to arrive.. Maybe today.
Let me clarify that:
DR CP's movie THE FLY is on Bravo tonight.
Had to log out abruptly earlier because I was having a real "Dilbert Moment" here at work. I called our systems geniuses to ask them to install the color printer on my desk computer and they said, "Not without your manager's approval." Oy. When my manager got back from his meeting, he said, "I don't care if everybody in the department has it." So, once I had the approval of someone who hasn't been alive as long as I've been a member of the American Library Association, the systems geniuses had to wave their magic wands over my computer. End of Dilbert moment.
OK...I just made an appointment for a therapy session - my first - tomorrow morning. This is a very good thing, so keep your fingers and toes crossed that she and I work well together.
DRJASON - therapy is like an aspirin when you have a headache. It is usually JUST what someone needs, if they are wise enough to take it. Congratulations.
-
DR MATTH - so how are things looking on the date front?
Thanks for asking. He took a half day off from work last Friday, and we spent part of his free time together. We had lunch on Sunday, talk on the phone every night or so, and are having lunch again tomorrow. So, things proceeding slowly but surely.
He lives out of the city, way on the other side of the county from me, so quick meetings are difficult. He's also a volunteer with several organizations which require a large part of his free time. So, I am pleased with how things are going, but we're definitely not breaking any speed records.
-
Do you mean BAKER STREET?
And then there's also TRIXIE TRUE, TEEN DETECTIVE.
Ooo! I forgot about Baker Street (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CQQGVE/qid=1138313619/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/002-7701208-5864855?s=music&v=glance&n=5174), which is FINALLY being released on CD with bonus tracks! But as Tomovoz pointed out, I meant Leslie Bricusse's Sherlock Holmes: The Musical (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000025HYH/qid=1138313686/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/002-7701208-5864855?s=music&v=glance&n=5174).
Well, awards certainly don't mean everything, but LOST did win last year's Emmy for Best Drama, this year's Golden Globe for Best Drama, and was Show of the Year for the National Association of TV Critics last season. Industry professionals certainly seem to like it, and it was among the Top Ten most popular series in the ratings last year and so far this year, so the general public seems to like it, too.
So, there is support for it out there as well as with a few of us at HHW.
-
DRJASON - therapy is like an aspirin when you have a headache. It is usually JUST what someone needs, if they are wise enough to take it. Congratulations.
My friend, Sal, put it this way. He said, "therapy is like having someone organize all the stuff that's floating around up there and helping you to put it in order." That's exactly what I need.
The most delightful book just became available here at my library - and I'm one of the first to check it out!
DR Ginny, do you work in a public library? I am in an academic one.
I just got off the phone with DR Jose...he's in San Francisco...when he called he had just come down the hill from Coit Tower and during the last part of our talk he was ascending Lombard Street (the world's crookedest street) and had to stop and rest.
San Francisco has some steep, steep streets...and they can wind the fittest among us.
So far, he's been very good...he has bypassed several chocolate shops.
Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk were the first Nick and Nora I ever saw.
moi aussi! I'm back from Charlotte's dance recital, and an interesting reciatal it was. Those kids have got to raise their standards of listening, and a lot of the recital looked like too much MTV viewing. A Asian-American student did a wonderful Korean Drum Dance involving three hanging tom-toms and an off-stage drummer that deservedly brought down the house.
DR TPunk, Charlotte and I want to see TRISTAN AND ISOLDE on Saturday night. Do you want to come with us?
What, no Boston Blackie fans here? Get with the times, people!
-
FJL-
I am a fan of the Hollisters. I posted on them back in the days before you joined up. I found a website that has a lot about them.
The four books I have, inherited from cousins, I think, are:
THE HAPPY HOLLISTERS
THE HAPPY HOLLISTERS AT CIRCUS ISLAND
THE HAPPY HOLLISTERS AND THE INDIAN TREASURE
THE HAPPY HOLLISTERS AND THE OLD CLIPPER SHIP
-
Back when there used to be a cable channel called The Nostalgia Network, they used to show Boston Blackie on there.
-
I also have two books of a similar series to the Hollisters: The Malones. Featuring quirky daughter Beany Malone.
-
Yes, JRand, I hoped to come into work today and hear that a few of America's finest ballerinas had inquired as to who that handsome devil was watching from the wings last night. Alas, I heard nothing, and am smart enough not to post on here if I did. TPunk knows kickboxing.
-
WHEW!!! I got a couple days behind....not a good thing to do, I am finally caught up.
-
DR Jason...hang in there, you've got lots of friends here. If I was there I would give you a great big hug!!
-
Well, the time is getting near and I am getting very very excited. I drove by the new house on the way home and saw a U-Haul in the driveway....so nice to know they are getting everything out of there. I close on the house at 8:30 AM on Feb 1. Then I'm going to work all day....yeah right my mind will really be there...but then I'm taking off from Feb 2-10 to clean, paint, finish packing and move.
-
The elpee cover of the night is the Bob Judd Quartet at Costella's Chalet. Wherever that is. I found the album at an antique store in Gilroy, California, Garlic Capital of the World.
It is actually really a nice-sounding album. Tends to be medleys.
Today I bought a new sofa chair and mattress and box spring. The sales are great right now and I took Paul who was most entertaining. He's like a kid in a candy shop and does a great job distracting the salesman so I could take my time looking
-
So, I'm off to pack up the dishes I don't use very often and to call and see if Dominos has a chocolate pizza!
-
Last night I went to a Broadway one-woman show, opening tonight, called BRIDGE AND TUNNEL. It features Sarah Jones, as a multicultural poetry jam. Now, the show isn't itself a poetry jam, Jones just plays various characters, all immigrants from different lands, performing at a poetry jam, only a couple of whom attempt real poems. It is somewhat endearing, some good laughs. She is definitely talented at taking on the differnt personae. It didn't blow my mind as entertainment, but it held my attention.
-
I think the hat would look smashing on me!
I guess this answers the question, does anyone still wear...
-
Off to dinner.
-
I mentioned Boston Blackie.
I shall now be on my way to do a couple of errands. From there, I shall be on my way to the theater for tonight's performance. Pray for Rosemary's Baby.
-
The new high powered "popemobile" is I believe a Vatican VIII.
Oh, a V-8.
-
Sad but true!
Another misguided effort by Ford to save their empire!
Or a misguided effort by me at making punny remarks.
-
Arrgh! There was a huge back-up on the highway tonight and my 40-minute commute took me an hour and a half. I never did see the cause, but I got off just as traffic was beginning to slow again. Just think, I could still be sitting there!
-
One thing I could do without is my current bachache.
For one thing, it hurts.
For another, I can't help feeling like I'm copying our esteemed BK. He doesn't need my detracting from his originality like that.
One thing I could do with more of, is the weekly visit from some of our local schoolkids.
These are a class of developmentally disabled youths, who are being taught some basic survival skills, such as how to shop at a supermarket and pay for their purchases. I had two of the lads come to my register today. One had a real problem understanding the quantity of money involved - his purchase, a bunch of carrots, came to 99 cents, and instead of handing me a dollar he insisted on handing me an entire wad of bills. His teacher had to quietly but firmly try to get him to understand how much he needed to pay. I don't think she was getting through.
The other young man had several purchases, and interacted with me quite well. The teacher gave him a little assitance in handling a credit card, but he didn't need too much help. And, at the end of the transaction, when I said "Have a pleasant afternoon," he beamed when he said "Thank-you!" And, after a moment, he said "You, too!"
With that, I didn't care about my backache. Well, for about ten minutes.
-
Time to get dinner made. Later.
-
So, I'm off to pack up the dishes I don't use very often and to call and see if Dominos has a chocolate pizza!
DRCillaliz, I like the sound of that, chocolate pizza!!
DRJason, I send good vibes your way. Take care!
-
Yikes, that is not fun Ginny....
-
Good morning, all! I don't have much today, chiefly a trip to the Horace Mann School to see goddaughter Charlotte's dance recital this afternoon.
Before that, I've got a trek to the office for some Toyland work and then the NYPL for another look at the new Kurt Weill Edition.
There is a Man School in New York? My God, think of the number of scholarships I could award.
-
Mmmm...I could use a chocolate pizza right now.
I just got a very supportive phone call from my dad, who just spoke with my mother about last night's conversation. I'm still not entirely sure where we all stand in the outing process, but I certainly feel exposed. He was very supportive but made his position clear on how he feels about homosexuality, as if I didn't already know. Anyway, he said they just want me to be happy and healthy and he recognizes that I'm nearly 30 and I'll make my own decisions and he hopes I'll make the "right" one. He didn't flip out. He didn't threaten to never speak to me again. He just told me to take it one step at a time. One foot in front of the other. I still don't know where that puts us, but it opens the door for communication, I suppose.
-
I found Bricusse's Sherlock Holmes rather dreadful. The only good thing is that he appropriated London is London from Goddbye, Mr. Chips for it.
-
Jason I’m glad your father is supportive and in your mother’s odd way it seemed to me she was attempting that last night.
Children usually don’t live the lives parents choose for them, and you know what…. most parents adjust. What is important to parents is their children are happy and feel good about themselves and are nice people. Well nice person, while difficult I’m sure you will get through this a stronger person. Good, good vibes.
Go visit Jose this weekend and have fun.
-
Elmore, yes we saw BLEAKHOUSE. Did you find it difficult to hear at times? Keith being totally unfamiliar with the story had trouble following at times.
Ginny Im also interested in the Billy Joel book. I work out to his music almost every day.
-
Hmmm, interesting Samantha Harris (host of Dancing With the Stars) was interviewing P Master on the show. She took him to task, asking why he had only practiced 20 hours total (for 4 weeks) when the others averaged 130 hours.
I almost think if he put in the time he could do better. I tend to think America might be annoyed at him for this. Cause besides the judges being mean to him, I think most people thought that he was trying so hard but just not as good as the others.
-
Oh gosh..Sajid Khan... he was dreamy... *sigh*
Who is...........or was..............Sajid Khan?
Ginny Im also interested in the Billy Joel book. I work out to his music almost every day.
Well, Jane (and others who've asked) the "story" is just the lyrics to his song New York State of Mind. But the watercolor illustrations by someone named Izak are stunning. There is a little dog in each picture and his adventures make a little story, too. There is a companion CD single of the song in the back of the book. Billy Joel's dedication reads:
"This book is for everyone who lives in New York or who comes and falls in love with it. No matter where you go in the world, you never really leave New York and it never really leaves you."
-
Tomovoz, I hope there weren’t any fires last night and the rain helped some.
Elmore and Ron thanks for the updates on Jose.
Lately I have been binging on junk food and too much chocolate. It finally got to me and I plan to diet this week. Even if I hadn’t intended to diet today I would have-barely had time to eat.
Cillaliz I’m so excited for you. Good vibes for a smooth closing.
-
Jason, I agree with Jane - go to Washington and take full advantage of your role as MTI rep!
-
DR Jennifer, I'm not voting for him this week. Last week I thought he was trying. I don't think that anymore. I still don't like the judges, but they were nicer over all than last time
-
Ginny the book sounds sweet. The artist name is familiar to me, just can't place it.
-
Just got a message from DR Jose: He's having fun in San Francisco and I believe he said he's just about to head into the theatre...?
Providing it's not too stressful for him, what with four shows this weekend and just returning from SF, I think I am going to go visit him. I miss him and want to see him and I need the company and I want to see his show and at least one of the Smithsonian museums, so I think I'm gonna spend the $20 for the scary chicken bus out of Chinatown and hie myself away for the weekend.
And then, of course, I'm off to Boston again next weekend... I'm becoming quite the traveler!
-
DR Jason - go for it and have a wonderful trip.
-
Ginny the book sounds sweet. The artist name is familiar to me, just can't place it.
The blurb on the jacket says his work appears frequently in leading fashion magazines and ad campaigns for Henri Bendel and Neiman Marcus.
-
Good back vibes to everyone who needs them!!
-
Loved Mike Myers in that skit...
However my favorite SNL skit is cowbell!! "I need more cowbell"
Keith is ready to watch something-'night.
-
DR TPunk, Charlotte and I want to see TRISTAN AND ISOLDE on Saturday night. Do you want to come with us?
Thank you for the invite! I am tempted, but my weekend is once again filled up with the training of 10 potential hotline counselors at GMHC. Can I say maybe and then decide on Saturday depending upon the time we finish up and my level of exhaustion?
-
Yes, JRand, I hoped to come into work today and hear that a few of America's finest ballerinas had inquired as to who that handsome devil was watching from the wings last night. Alas, I heard nothing, and am smart enough not to post on here if I did. TPunk knows kickboxing.
No, but perhaps some of the male dancers asked about you?
-
Elmore, yes we saw BLEAKHOUSE. Did you find it difficult to hear at times? Keith being totally unfamiliar with the story had trouble following at times.
Ginny Im also interested in the Billy Joel book. I work out to his music almost every day.
I loved BLEAK HOUSE, but I kept getting lost with so many characters. I think it's quite intriguing and I love the liesurely pace of the story. I just started reading the new BRANDO UNZIPPED, which is very graphic and pornographic: the writer's smarmy "confidential" style is rather repellant. The stories may all be true, but I still question his scholarship.
-
Jason, I'm glad that you were able to get an appointment so quickly. Take care of yourself.
Of course! It would be late afternoon or early evening, depending on her Saturday dance classes.
-
Folks, I am exhausted. Let's just say that today was a rough one for me. Thankfully, the sweet and attentive Rodzinski was on hand to take me out to dinner and provide the space for me to unload some of my work woes. And now, I must get back to work.
Speaking of questionable books, the flap over James Frey's A Million Little Pieces rages on. Apparently he was on Oprah today and she raked him over the coals and tonight Larry King had an interesting panel of memoirists and others discussing the implications for the publishing world and the recovery world. The librarian listservs are full of discussions about whether or not we should reclassify the book from nonfiction to fiction.
More cowbell.
-
Jason, I'm glad that you were able to get an appointment so quickly. Take care of yourself.
I'm glad, too. Thank you so much for everything you've done for me - you've been amazing. :) Now, take care of yourself, too!!!
DR Rodzinski - you're a lucky man!
-
One thing I could do without is my current bachache.
For one thing, it hurts.
For another, I can't help feeling like I'm copying our esteemed BK. He doesn't need my detracting from his originality like that.
One thing I could do with more of, is the weekly visit from some of our local schoolkids.
The other young man had several purchases, and interacted with me quite well. The teacher gave him a little assitance in handling a credit card, but he didn't need too much help. And, at the end of the transaction, when I said "Have a pleasant afternoon," he beamed when he said "Thank-you!" And, after a moment, he said "You, too!"
With that, I didn't care about my backache. Well, for about ten minutes.
Well? Which is it? A backache or a bachache?
Could it be a Bachache, because of Mozart's birthday?
I'm in the middle - literally - of reading that book and I have to say, even knowing that he "embellished" (sp?), it's a hell of a read. I got through about 200 pages on the train ride back from Boston on Sunday. I'd be done with it by now if life hadn't kinda gotten in the way, but I'm chomping at the bit to get back to it and finish. I do, however, take issue with the idea of him calling it a memoir if it's not all entirely true. I'm glad Oprah called him out on it.
-
I mentioned Boston Blackie.
Okay, then what about Eischeid? Where are all the Eischeid fans? Joe Don Baker? Anyone?
-
No, but perhaps some of the male dancers asked about you?
I'll take flattery from anywhere! But I did learn that one of the guy dancers, (ballerinos?) Charles Askegard, is married to Candace Bushnell, the impetus for SEX AND THE CITY.
-
Jane, I often find the sound in British productions just awful...It's like the mix is all wrong. Last night we were watching the constant gardener and had to re-start the film after ten minutes and crank up the sound to almost ear-bleeding levels to hear the dialogue.
Rodzinski, I used to watch Eischied. I worked with Suzanne Lederer in the Cruciifer of Blood (my swan song as an actor) who was the girl in it. Wonder where the Hell she is these days?
-
Spoiler if you don't want to read chatter about tonight's DANCING WITH THE STARS.
DR Jennifer, I'm not voting for him this week. Last week I thought he was trying. I don't think that anymore. I still don't like the judges, but they were nicer over all than last time
Well they were mean to him, but nice to everyone else.
What the show did this week was interesting. The judges were brutal towards P. And I think they would have gotten the votes based on that. But Samantha's (host) questions were very enlightening.
I agree with you. I think people thought he was trying and just figured he was bad. But he's putting in such few hours, I was totally shoecked about that.
-
This the production you were in, Pogue?
-
Funny how it seemed like Eischied was a big part of my childhood, then I look up and there were only about 10 episodes ever.
Used to watch that and BARNABY JONES on the "CBS LATE NIGHT MOVIE" which was mostly never a movie, and sometimes was just episodes of the Jeffersons!
I have not read the book, but i saw a bit of what happened on Oprah today. I didn't see the beginning. But I wouldn't say she was brutal.
Yes she did call him out on what he did. And he obviously was put down a few pegs. But she wasn't mean to him. She did say that she was very sorry that she had called Larry King and said what she had said.
She said she got so caught up in the reaction to the book that she overlooked the lies. From what I saw she made me go into detail about which events were fabricated. He mentioned his girlfriend did not committ suicide by hanging herself (she cut her wrists). And Oprah was like "why would you lie about that??"
It seems like he made up quite a bit of stuff.
-
Okay, then what about Eischeid? Where are all the Eischeid fans? Joe Don Baker? Anyone?
I only know Joe Don Baker from the classic MST3K version of Mitchell.
"Mitchell... Mitchell... eeeeyyyyyes on the sammich..."
Speaking of new books, I really want to read the book by the real Alison Dubois called Don't Kiss them goodbye. My dad has a copy and i will ask to borrow it when he is through.
Ah now i see why. There was some added stuff in the properties that i did not see.
-
Well, I was all gung ho to start packing again. and well.....actually I need more packing material that isn't newspaper to pack my dishes. I've used up the plastic grocery sacks and tissue paper. I need to make a run to the store and get some stuff tomorrow so I can finish with the dishes. Oy! I'll be glad when this is done.
-
Good luck, Cillaliz!
-
Thanks, I'm just whining. I am actually very excited, but when I'm packing alone, not much gets done. I'll have help as the time to actually move gets closer. I'm going to be cleaning and painting and all that good stuff too. Time will fly. I am SOOO excited about this that I'm pretty much obsessing about it. But at least it's a healthy obsession!
-
And, I should add, at least I'm healthy in time to work like crazy
-
Very excited for DR CILLA LIZ as she moves into Camelot. Hopefully they will leave behind something special for you to find....and you should do the same for the people who move into your house!
-
And don't take your old broom into your new house. Buy a new broom and a new box of salt!
-
Lovely story DR SWW! Aches and pains can be lessened by human contact sometimes.
Oh and yes, DR DAKOTA CELT - I dealt with PeopleSoft when I was employed for the State of Indiana - and in fact still use it when a job that interests me shows up on the Personnel website.
PeopleSoft - it is impossible to navigate - you can never correct a mistake and clicking through usually takes you right back where you started. And of course there are days when it keeps asking you to log in and refuses to accept your name and password.
-
Curtain just went up on DECEIT.
Thanks, MR BK....I will watch for it in a few days....
-
Thanks JRand. They had a neat folder with the history of the house that I asked them to leave or to copy for me. I hope they'll leave that. If not, I copied down the address and email of the woman who wrote a newspaper story about growing up in the house. She works for a newspaper in Greenville, TX and is still showing up on Google, so I can always try to find her.
-
And don't take your old broom into your new house. Buy a new broom and a new box of salt!
I've remembered that you said that. This time next week I will most likely be pushing a broom, cleaning, moving boxes or just sitting there and smiling.
-
Great, DRCILLA LIZ....I am so excited for you. We must HAVE photos!
Work and study vibes for DR TPUNK.
And now thanks to DR RODZINSKI I am intrigued....INTRIGUED mind you....that there was/is a place called Costella's Chalet featuring the Bob Judd Quartet.....clarinet, accordion, keyboard....and ???....guitar? Can't tell from the photos on the front, but those are nifty tuxes to be shur!
-
Allison Hayes Dance! :o
-
I think it was in this interview that Miss Hayes declared that she looked forward one day to playing Shaw's St. Joan on the Broadway stage.
-
Had a nice conversation with the fella tonight, and our lunch is indeed on for tomorrow, but it's to be an early lunch (11:30) due to work and the necessity of getting home and changed to go to some awards dinner tomorrow night.
He's got something Saturday night, too, so looks like we won't be spending much alone time this weekend unless he wants to do something Sunday. I have no problem with his crowded schedule. When I worked, I was just as busy and had very little free time (one reason I never seemed to stay with anyone for very long; just didn't have the time for the relationship.) Now that I have mostly free time, I am certainly willing to wait and to conform to his schedule.
-
Alas the ambition did not come to fruition.
-
DR TCB - Sajid Kahn is probably best known to American audiences for his appearance in the movie MAYA - with costar Jay North (who had a nude in the film) - the film was the basis for a one season television series the next year....Jay was not naked in the series.
He also guest starred on an episode of THE BIG VALLEY and a couple of others including THE MAN FROM UNCLE.
-
An awards dinner - I hope he wins.
-
Print out Allison's picture and he can carry it for luck.
-
Time for to go to bed here in the EST zone. For this guy anyway.
-
DR Cillaliz, so who did you vote for?
Or who did you think did the best?
I was very impressed with Drew Lachey. I thought he did the best.
And I thought Lisa Rinna was really good. I voted for her.
-
I thought tonight's WILL & GRACE was the funniest of the season. I laughed out loud several times and enjoyed the banter between the principals. Good show.
spoiler - - - -
I noticed on some kind of preview for the last episodes that Taye Diggs is coming back into Will's life. I liked him very much in THE SOUND OF MUSIC-themed episode, but I can't say that he and Eric McCormack had the same level of chemistry that he and Patrick Dempsey or he and Bobby Cannavale had. Anyway, looks like Taye's character is who Will is going to end up with. No real complaints - just a tiny bit of disappointment.
At least Will isn't ending up with Jack as a partner.
-
Geez, I am hungry. And I just realized why. i ate dinner before 5pm! :(
-
Print out Allison's picture and he can carry it for luck.
Thanks for reminding me to ask him if he knows who she is. I have forgotten every single time we've been together or talked together.
-
FOUR KINGS had the wittiest and most engaging episode of its run thus far. The Josh Cooke-Seth Green story was silly, but the other two guys had a funny gym encounter in which glances were stoken at each other's, well, endowments, and the rest of their story revolved around puns and witticisms relating to their sizes or lack thereof. Also, there were some funny graphic jokes on building charts that resembled human anatomy, too.
This was the first episode that led me to think this show might develop into something fun and funny.
-
JRand, a little net research just told me that Costella's Chalet was located in a little town called Felton, CA, up in the Santa Cruz mountains, not too far from where I bought that LP. The Chalet was in business from 1941-84.
You know, I remember now that I saw another album by the Bob Judd Quartet on another visit, and I cannot remember if I bought it or not. I think I didn't.
DANCING WITH STARS SPOILERS>>>>>>>WELL AT LEAST CHAT ABOUT IT
DR Cillaliz, so who did you vote for?
Or who did you think did the best?
I was very impressed with Drew Lachey. I thought he did the best.
And I thought Lisa Rinna was really good. I voted for her.
I wasn't going to vote for anyone, but the vote sways this show so much that I decided to vote for Lisa Rinna, too. She is working so hard and did a great job.
Hmm who did the best... I think I agree on Drew. I didn't like the dances tonight as well. I guess from now on they have to do 2 a week, that will probably make a big difference.
-
MY NAME IS EARL also had a funny one this week as Earl tried to make amends to a friend who was on his way to prison. Once again, innocent brother Randy (Ethan Suplee) had some hilarious moments as he tried to find a job that would be his "purpose in life."
-
Well, I'm going to get ready to get some sleep. Another early morning at the office
-
CRUMBS wasn't particularly funny, but it had some poignant moments involving the ever-troubled Jane Curtin character.
I do not like how Fred Savage's character has morphed into kind of the family punching bag taking their abuse and potshots. I don't find their picking on him funny and am longing to see him stand his ground and shake off the guilt trips they're constantly hanging on him.
-
And WITHOUT A TRACE had a very involving episode as the FBI team looked for a missing middle school teacher along with one of her students.
As usual, what appeared to be going on was not the case at all, and the case became much more interesting as we delved into the sad backgrounds of both missing people.
-
DR Ron, how was tonight's SMALLVILLE?
It drives me crazy that they don't put up the placings at the end of the show like they did last year. Bunching everyone together (when they have different scores) is so annoying.
Really though the first place team cannot go. The only way they can go is if the last place team gets the most votes, the 2nd to last gets second most and so on. It would also take a lot for the 2nd place team to go.
It has to be the one of the last 3 teams. But really all the lowest team needs to do to stay is get more fan votes than the team right in front of them.
Hope that made sense.
Yeah I like Lisa's attitude as well. And she is so busy. I love how excited she gets as she improves each week. She is really most improved. Stacey on the other hand seems to stay at the same level.
I really wanted to see that. I like some of hte interviews she does and I have read a number of her books on her bookclub lists.
I saw a bit of Dancing with the Stars and I do have to say, Lisa has impressed me. It just bugs me that they call her a soap diva.....
She is a decent actress but in my book she never reached that level. A diva would be on the par of Ericka Slezak, Susan Lucci, Melody Scott Thomas, Phyllis Stafford, Susan Flannery and a number of others... Lisa just does not have that body of work.
-
Jason - Have a great time in DC.
-
Rodzinski - Glad someone else remembers the Hollisters.
And I also remember the "movies" that were really TV series episodes, but also sometimes just failed pilots that were being unloaded.
(Although what really got to me were the often lame pilots that found their way into LOVE AMERICAN STYLE, which at a certain age I thought was usually the height of naughty sophistication.)
-
Yeah, LOVE AMERICAN STYLE was far over my head. But reruns were shown right in the middle of the day on WGN TV in Chicago, so I watched...and learned.
-
With the TOD being detectives, my favorite song about "private eyes" - does anybody else remember:
I hear talk, I hear the writings on the wall
Too many private eyes and party lines
Secret signs
-
I never understood that song, but it seemed to play a lot in special interest establishments, and could make a good PAGE 10 DANCE.
-
And for crying out loud, they even had the pilot for the TV Barefoot in the Park on LOVE AMERICAN STYLE.
-
And the pilot for Happy Days (the Gary Marshall Happy Days, not the Beckett Happy Days)
-
Just got kicked off very mysteriously. Logged in again just to say that. And to say goodnight.
DR FJL, keep your gremlins to your self.... LOL!!! 8)
Speaking of weird TV shows (but not really), a friend of mine just acquired some videos of an old Phyllis Diller show called "The Pruitts of Southampton." Anyone remember it? I watched the opening credits and had to walk away - it's just awful. Even the theme song is terrible...
"Howdja do? Howdja do? Howdja do, my friend..."
ARGH!!
-
Rodzinski, twas indeed the production I was in.
One of the strangest show I have ever seen and I even have it on tape yet.... It is a british comedy called "Hot Metal" It is a parody of the Fleet Street gossip rags... It was weird....
The other odd one was a locally produced show of oddities and ghosts in ND. They actually had a feature on a guys' gas can collection. Some of the other oddities included the hole to hell, The Wolfe family murders, The pagoda, The Giant gascan pile (in Casselton and it is still standing.) North DAkota's contribution to the wonders of roadside attractions that include Salem Sue and the Jamestown Buffalo. It was strange....
Darn. I've been watching (and somewhat enjoying) this show, but I forgot to set my VCR to tape anything tonight. :(
My niece and I went to Seattle to see a screening of the independent (British) movie, Imagine Me & You (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421994/). It's a movie about a woman who, on her wedding day (as she's walking down the aisle, actually) makes eye contact with the person who did the flowers and instantly connects...in a way that one shouldn't when one is walking down the aisle to get married. She does get married, but starts to question her feelings because the flower person is another woman! It's about how the new bride examines her feelings and relationship and realizes that she does indeed fall in love with this other woman. It's a very cute movie, but nothing incredibly special. It's almost like it's a light-hearted lesbian romantic comedy version of "Brokeback Mountain." Almost, but not quite. ;)
-
Back from the show. Smallish audience, but a very good one, one of our best, in fact. The show was mostly good, although plagued with fumfered lines.
I just read over the two promo spots, and I think I'm pretty happy with them - they read very well, and I tweaked just a couple of things in each - off they'll go in the morning.
-
Oy. What a day. Mostly wasted. I spent from 8:30 a.m. to midnight trying to get the office printer to print out 250 newsletters. I only got about half done. It's a terrible piece of very expensive office equipment. Don't buy a Ricoh.
-
After the movie, my niece and I went to Barnes & Noble and I bought the movie soundtrack to "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever." I thought I had it on CD, but I'm not sure. I know I have the OBC. It was cheap, so I got it anyway.
When I got home, I checked my mail and received two, count 'em TWO, packages from fellow HHWers!! I totally did not expect them. One was from François and the other was from Tomovoz! Thank you both! That was so very kind. :-*
I live in Olympia, WA, about an hour or so south of Seattle. DRs Jed, Ann and TCB all live in Tacoma (but not all together). That's about halfway between Seattle and Olympia.
And we're so close to 300 it would be a shame not to get there.
Hence, I'll just insure we get over the top.
