Title: ONLY TIME WILL TELL
Post by: bk on January 30, 2006, 12:12:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you're still trying to erase the image of a gazelle wearing a jock strap, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - of course, only time will tell if they are on their way, and time's not talking.

I wonder what a gazelle would do on an icy road in ND...

It could be entertaining....

I have a question that has nothing to do with today's Topic of the Day:  Does anyone play FreeCell?  I play it a lot and I usually play an individual game until I win.  I'll "restart" a game rather than just quit and play a completely different one.  Anyway, I have met my match.  Game # 7303.  I have not been able to beat win it.  I've played it more than 20 times and still can't figure it out.  My supervisor has tried a couple of times (I told him about it on Thursday) and he hasn't been able to win that particular game.

Anyone's mission (should anyone choose to accept it), is to play FreeCell Game # 7303 and let me know if anyone can win this game.  I've become obsessed!  I await any news and hints. ;D

And now, I must go to sleep and try to forget (if only for one night ;)) FreeCell Game # 7303.

I don't know from FreeCell.  My personality is such that I have tried to avoid ALL computer games.  Bookworm taught me a lesson.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S....yes, Mr Buddy Ebsen was so VERY good in the part....  And I agree with today's notes (and 'most everyone else, I guess) that everyone but Mr Mickey Rooney is perfectly cast.  I am sure, however, he feels he is the HIGHLIGHT of the movie.

DRTOMovOZ - no, I don't have an X-rated version of Lords of Discipline...but I am sure one exists somewhere! :)

I liked the fairy tales of CINDERELLA and SLEEPING BEAUTY when I was growing up.  I was always afraid of THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF....there was a troll under the bridge!

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was another favorite.

Good morning, all!  I dreamed I was orchestrating a Kander & Ebb show last night, but that's all I recall of it.  Today I have a trip to Toyland and then a trip over to the Frank Loesser office to check out some thngs for the City Opera production of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.  After that, laundry:  a day fraught with incident.

TOD:
I think my favorite folktale as a child was "Hansel and Gretel," mostly because of my fixation with the 1954 stop-motion film with a wonderful cast doing the speaking roles:  Anna Russell, Mildred Dunnock, Frank Rogier, etc.
I was also crazy about Greek and Roman mythology, read child's versions of ILIAD and ODYSSEY many times as well as Hawthorne's "The Wonder Book" and "Tanglewood Tales," which I still prefer to his "adult" novels.

FJL, I have a tax-related question for you.

You may not be able to answer but since you're in that business I wonder if you have any idea why the state of New York has decided my W-2 forms are not good enough to send in with my tax return. Which pencil pusher at some desk in Albany (or was it the less than intelligent legislators) decided that I now have to fill out a form transferring the very information listed on my W-2 form, wasting paper and adding time to the preparation of my taxes. I realize I only have to fill out one section of the form since I only have one W-2 but I still have to waste time filling out the form and it seems that I will have to continue this idiotic process for years to come. Why am I paying taxes for stupidity such as this???

This, by the way, is not directed at you, FJL, it's just a little early morning rant before I go off to push my own pencil (or pen as it were).

TOD:

Like DR Elmore, Handel and Gretel was also a favorite of mine, almost to the point of fixation.  I was fascinated with this story and I collected a number of different story books that told the tale.

I also liked Pinnochio, particularly the Disney movie.

More end of days weather here in Philly--when I came into work this morning, there was clear visibility from my office window.  But within the past ten minutes or so, a dense fog bank crept into the city and I can now barely see beyond the boulevard that runs along our building.

It reminds me of Stephen King's The Myst.

Speaking of Shirley Temple, I spotted the brief clip of her Storybook Theatre show on the SAG Awards last night and I was dazzled by the bright and vivid color.  I would love to see an entire episode.  I recall this show was discussed here before.  Does anyone know if it's available on DVD?

As for favorite Fairy Tales...  Hmm...

"Hansel and Gretel", "Snow White"... But the stories that I seemed to be fixated on were Mother Goose rhymes and Aesop's fables.

...But as I continue to wake up this morning, maybe more of my memory will be jogged.

Good Morning, Ginny!

Yes, Jason did make it back to his place safe and sound.  Of course, as soon as he stepped down into the subway station, a train was pulling away, so he had about a 20 minutes wait until he make the final part of his trek home.  And, hopefully, he's on the subway back to his office at MTI as I type.  ;)

DR Jose - Cincinnati's name is from the Society of the Cincinnatus, which took it's name from:

"Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, born 519?, BC:  Roman statesman who gained fame for his selfless devotion to the republic in times of crisis and for giving up the reins of power when the crisis was over. Although he was a historical figure, his career has been much embellished by legend...."  (Encyclopedia Britannica online)

Thank you for your continued help, by the way.

TOD: Definately, The Ugly Duckling.  The gayest tale of them all.

In spite of what Bettleheim has to say about it (he found the story a bore, and never did get the gay side of the story - his loss).

My favorite fairy tale rendition as a kid was the Gene Kelly version of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, with the undervalued Bobby Riha as Jack.  I still remember loving the theme song about "A tiny bit of faith and a large amount of hope, and vice-a versa."

Does HR PUFNSTUF count as something of a fairy tale?  That was a fave too.

I agree completely, DR Dan. I saw that clip and was astonished by the clarity and richness of color. I watched SHIRLEY TEMPLE'S STORYBOOK religiously, but we only had a black and white set then, so I never saw the episodes in color and would LOVE to see them now. I have a feeling they'd hold up beautifully. Some of them were outstanding examples of fairy tale representations. I particularly remember "The Little Lame Prince."

If PETER PAN counts as a fairy tale (rather than a fantasy), then it's my favorite. For all of my childhood, it was the one story (and the Disney film) that I dreamed about and longed to be a part of.

Thanks for the update on BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S. I won't be buying it. Actually, I think the first quarter of the old DVD was dirty, grainy, and ugly, but I remember that it sort of cleared up and got better as it ran. Maybe I'm just remembering incorrectly, but I think I'll just keep what I've got for now.

The show ran from 1958-1960...and during those years, I know I didn't know anyone who had ever seen a color TV.

I know the process had been around since the early 1950s, but few shows shot anything in color until the 1960s.

What great news that the Storybook Theater was done in color...it ought to do well on DVD should anyone ever release the episodes.  A few were issued on VHS, but only a few.

The lady up the street from us had a color TV (an RCA, naturally), and we would go there and watch THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR when something unusual was coming on or BONANZA occasionally. She loved having company as she lived alone. She'd serve cookies and Kool-Aid to us and was very, very sweet.

Funny that some syndicated shows with low budgets like SUPERMAN, THE LONE RANGER, and THE CISCO KID shot many of their seasons in color in the mid to late 1950s.

I think one of the selling points of SHIRLEY TEMPLE'S STORYBOOK was that the fairy tales were in color, not than most of the country could see them that way.

Terribly sad news. The playwright, Wendy Wasserstein (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/96859.html) has passed away from lymphoma at only 55 years of age. She will be missed. I didn't know her but I saw many of her plays and, IMHO, she was a wonderful artist.

That is indeed sad news.  Ms. Wasserstein was a frequent visitor to DC and to Arena Stage in particular.  She was in attendance at many an opening night, and she sent her regrets this past December for not being able to make it to the opening of Damn Yankees.  She was also an artistic ally and dear friend of Arena's Artistic Director, Molly Smith.  I'm sure Molly and Arena will be doing something to honor her memory and artistic contributions.

I'm here safe and sound, thanks to DR Jose's excellent driving skills. I'm afraid I wasn't much of a driving companion - I dozed off around 12:30 this morning - but he was kind enough to drop me off at my subway stop before his trek uptown. I think I got to bed around 3:30 this morning. I was up at 8:00 and, to my shock and frustration, my roommate was in the bathroom taking a shower - for FORTY-FIVE MINUTES! I finally had to knock on the door and tell him I needed to get ready. "Oh, I'm sorry - I'm not used to the new schedule." What? What "new" schedule? I've been on MY schedule since he moved in. I don't know what HIS new schedule is and it doesn't really matter - 45 minutes in the bathroom on any morning is too long. Especially since he has a half bathroom in his bedroom. Rant over.

I took nearly 300 pictures this weekend while I was visiting Our Nation's Capitol. I did the touristy stuff yesterday - the National Archives, four of the Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery and the Washington Monument. It was a busy day! And then I got to sit in the pit with DR Jose and his fellow musicians, which was quite a fun experience. Believe it or not, last night was the first time the whole weekend that I was able to forget the stresses of last week and just have fun.

Many, MANY thanks to DR Jose and his parents for putting me up - and putting up with me - this weekend. FRUIT LOOPS!!

DR FJL - RE: Your IE problems - Are you on a PC or Mac?  The Mac version is just not "it", so...  However, if you are on a PC...  Check your Internet Settings.  The default is to check for "newer versions" of each page automatically.  I find that that just eats up way too much memory and bandwidth.  Better to set that option to "Each Visit to the Page".

I just signed up for a screening tonight of the newly restored South Pacific that's about to make its appearance on DVD.  I don't know exactly what they're showing, whether it's a digital projection of the DVD itself, or a newly struck 70mm print (one would hope it's the latter, but who knows).  One of the main reasons I'm going to go is because the screening takes place at the Pacific's Theater on Hollywood Blvd.  The Pacific's was formerly the Warner Cinerama (written about extensively in the Kritzer books), and it's been closed for twenty years or so.  About ten years ago they started to have events and screenings there, but I've never managed to go to one.  So, I'm going to try and wrap up everything by six so I can head over there for the seven o'clock screening.

Believe it or not, last night was the first time the whole weekend that I was able to forget the stresses of last week and just have fun.

Many, MANY thanks to DR Jose and his parents for putting me up - and putting up with me - this weekend. FRUIT LOOPS!!

And don't forget about the pizza... and the desserts... And the Cheese Nips!  ;D

And I wasn't "putting up" with anything.  Always nice to have a friend along for the ride.

With only '24,' COURTING ALEX, and CSI: MIAMI with new episodes tonight, I should finally be able to get to that CSI episode from last week. I don't think it's ever taken me this long to get to one of my favorite shows. I guess I just had a busy weekend media-wise.

Have you ever been at work and just felt like not working.

Undoubtedly, and I don't even have to be at a job to feel that way. I've got open DVD sets (SUPERMAN, CSI: MIAMI) strewn all over my couch, and it's just easier to let them sit than clear up the mess.

Sounds like a great trip and a great getaway for you, DR Jason.

DR MattH: Yes...for as badly as I was feeling throughout parts of the weekend, it was good for me to go, and I'm so happy that I got to see and appreciate some of our country's history.

Standing in front of the Declaration of Independence, the cornerstone of our liberty and history, and realizing what people had to go through - and are continuing to go through - to get us where we are today helped open my eyes to the bigger picture and made my problems seem not so big. What really turned me around, though, was standing up against the Washington Monument looking up at the clouds, watching the dark rainclouds break away and seeing bright blue sky peeking through. I felt infinite. That's the only word I can use to describe it. Infinite. It made me feel like everything is going to be OK. I don't know when or how, but it will be.

Oooh...the pizza. I may have to go back to DC to see MAME just for the pizza at Matchbox. There are no words. And the fried onion strings. And the miniburgers. And the banana pudding. And the Nips. There are just no words. ;)

I can't believe I forgot to mention that I spent Saturday at the National Zoo and got to see the pandas, including the baby. Other than a slightly upsetting phone conversation with my dad just across from the elephant compound, my day at the Zoo was splendiforous. Again - I have pictures and will post them later.

You may find it interesting (and then again, you may not) to know that some of the exteriors of the lovely Miss Hepburn going into her apartment in Breakfast at Tiffany's were shot at a building my late Uncle Charlie owned.  Likewise with Barefoot in the Park, but why the lovely Miss Hepburn was in those shots remains a complete mystery.   ;)

Oh that is right, DR Jason, you wanted to see the pandas...were they as fun as you had hoped? I too find them fascinating.

The pandas were BEAUTIFUL. They have to keep the male and the female separated (they can only be kept together for short periods of time during mating season), but the baby was with the momma. He's 6 months old now, but he's still very small compared to his mother. One of the most fascinating, if not disgusting, things about the pandas is that they don't really digest their food, so they eat all day and night when they're not sleeping. Basically they poop out everything they've eaten before it's had a chance to digest.

The other exhibit that I spent a lot of time visiting was the cheetah conservation area, where they've recently had 5 cubs, who are now as big as their mother. Sadly, because the Zoo can only care for a certain number of animals, the cubs will eventually be sent to other Zoos, so they had to separate the mother from her cubs to let her get used to being away from them. She paced back and forth next to the fence for hours, looking and crying for her babies. They let her back into the big exhibit with the cubs later in the day, but they're trying to wean the cubs from their mother and this is the best way to do it, I guess. I also found it interesting that the zebra and cheetah exhibits are only separated by a chain link fence, so the cheetah cubs would just lay and stare at the zebra like so much lunch.

Have you ever heard a zebra? It's like a foghorn! You could hear him from across the Zoo. And cheetahs sound like doves, with a high-pitched bleat. They also bark like a high-pitched dog. And then when they meow they sound exactly like a domestic cat. One that could eat your head, but a cat nonetheless. ;)

DR MBARNUM after watching MAMBO GIRL last night, I moved on to the neglected CHITRALEKHA starring the lovely Miss Meena Kumari!

Whew!  There is NO Eastman Color left in the ENTIRE world, it was all used up in this movie.  I really really liked it and place it second only to PAKEEZAH.  Of course Meena plays the same kind of character - a dancer-whore....but she is much less sympathetic for most of this movie....stealing another woman's fiance, etc.

HOWEVER her three dancer friends and Mr MehMood are all so funny....and the songs....love the first SONG!

Have you run the "Check for Update" for IE?

Otherwise... I prefer to run Safari on my Mac.  I do have IE for those times when I need to use it - there are some music sites that only work properly with IE.  However, that usually means IE and a PC, so...

I also like Camino - which is Mozilla's Mac-only browser.

I should be in midtown later this afternoon.  I could make a house call if you like.

*Oh, and the AOL browser - whether on a PC or Mac - causes multitudes of problems.  I hardly ever use the browser in AOL.  -And AOL's "frame" just takes up too much screen space.

DR Jason I would love to see some of your National Zoo pictures!

We went there when the Vixter had just turned three years old

As we wandered by the pigmy hippo pools, Vixdad told her there were little hippos submerged in the water (they apparently stay down for 20- 30 minutes at a time)

She shouted "Hello!" into the pool in her tiny three year old voice and just then a pigmy hippo popped up out of the pool and wiggled its tiny ears at her, to her great delight.

She spent the remainder of the visit  sreaming "Hello!" into every pool of water we passed in hopes of seeing a hidden animal pop out!

I love dumb criminals stories

Quote
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - The business cards got a response, but surely not what their owner had in mind when he had them printed up.

They came to the attention of Leavenworth police, who used them to make a drug arrest last week.

Sylvester J. Williams, 21, of Leavenworth, was charged Monday with possessing crack cocaine with the intent to sell it, Maj. Patrick Kitchens of the Leavenworth Police Department said.

Kitchens said Williams remained in custody Wednesday on $75,000 bond.

He said police had heard for some time that Williams had been selling drugs in the area. "Then we heard that he was handing out business cards," the officer said. "In the course of our investigation we were fortunate to come up with one, and we gave him a call."

Kitchens said the business card had an image of what appeared to be an alarm clock being hit by a boxing glove and said: "For a quick hit on time call the boss."

"When he answered, we agreed to buy some crack from him, we went up there, and we arrested him," Kitchens said.

The arrest was made Friday.

"It makes our job considerably easier when they advertise and let us know where to get ahold of them," Kitchens said.

I'm feeling very sad about Wendy Wasserstein's death.  She was one of the three professional instructors in a playwriting workshop I had in college and she was simply the best.  Her classes were never straight lectures--she led lively interactive discussions with the students in which she instilled in us the idea that any of our everyday moments in life could be dramatized on stage.  She never self-promoted her own work and was always respectful and constructive when dealing with our scripts.  Though she taught the workshop for only a scant three and a half weeks, I will always think of her as one of the most delightful theatre instructors I ever had.

Enjoyed quite a few episodes of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN from disc 3. This one contains one of my all-time favorite shows - "Semi-Private Eye" where Jack Larson does a hilarious riff on Bogart. This is the other episode that contains commentary, and this one is more informative than the other one and is highly recommended.

"Pookie Puts the World Right" (Ivy Wallace).
I didn't read others in the series. I remember the illustrations and the story line about banishing winter (and the consequences). It would have made a lovely animated feature for little children.

Good Afternoon!

Whew!  A nice run around the Reservoir in Central Park.  Twice!  In just under 30 minutes.  One lap is 1.5 miles, and my goal was to run a little faster for the second lap.  I didn't necessarily have a better pace/time for the second lap, but I also didn't slow down, and lose pace/time.

And I have to say, scenically speaking, that is one great run!  I had never been up by the reservoir, so...  And today was a perfect day for a run.  I had done a Google search for running in Central Park, and found out that the path around the reservoir is an actual running path, so... That's where I headed.

Once I got back to the apartment, I did some much needed stretching/yoga.  -I had basically taken off the past few days, and once I finished my run, my lower back was still feeling sort of tight.  It's much, much better now.   And my hamstrings are starting to loosen up too - I'm digging touching my toes without as much effort (as I used to effort).  ;)

...And I guess during my final bit of stretching/yoga, I ended up taking a brief nap.  Guess I needed it.

:)

Dix Hills leopard keeper is sentenced

   4-year deal in leopard case
Dec 21, 2005

BY ZACHARY R. DOWDY
STAFF WRITER

January 30, 2006, 4:13 PM EST

The Dix Hills man who beat his wife and, chained her to a basement staircase in their home and drugged her was sentenced to four years in prison for the crimes yesterday.

Anthony Barone, 35, was sentenced yesterday by state Supreme Court Justice Robert W. Doyle in Riverhead as about a dozen of his relatives looked on -- and just after his wife of 14 years pleaded with Doyle through sobs to mete out the maximum term.

"I'm just begging you today to give him the maximum," said Anastasia Barone, who said she was kicked in the face by Barone -- while he was wearing steel-tipped boots – and punched, chained and drugged by her husband, who had made their house a den for a pair of leopard cubs. "In front of my children he kicked me in the face."

The couple has four children, ranging in age from two to nine years old, who lived at the house, too, despite the cubs.

Charges against Barone, who once ran a successful tattoo shop in Lynbrook, stem from assaults he committed against Anastasia Barrone in May 2005, after the couple argued over a pending separation.

At the time, police said Barone erupted into a rage and pummeled his wife. He was charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, weapons charges and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He pleaded guilty last month.

Doyle sentenced Barone to four years for the assault charge and lesser time for the other charges, the terms of which will be served concurrently. Suffolk prosecutor Donald Mates had asked Doyle to sentence Barone to five years in prison.

Looking forward to the SUPERMAN commentaries.

"Semi-Private Eye" is definitely the better of the two. There are almost no gaps, and one or the other (Larson and Neill) talk quite a bit, mostly Larson.

In order to get to that episode, I skipped another of my all-time favorites "The Clown Who Cried" which used to make me cry when I was young watching this episode.

What does emu taste like? Chicken?

I can't imagine eating kangaroo. Aren't they on the endangered species list?
I have not eaten Kangaroo or Emu and will not.  Tourists are more likely to do so. Check with Jose - he may have had eithert or both plus crocodile.
Most kangaroo species are far far far from being endangered. Koalas are in more trouble but only in some regions - mostly health problems!  There are large scale relocation programmes when there is overpopulation in communities. Tasmanian Devils are also having problems at the moment!

Just did a little research on SHIRLEY TEMPLE'S STORYBOOK. It really existed in two incarnations. The first aired 13 episodes in 57-58 produced by Henry Jaffe Enterprises on NBC (reruns on ABC in 1959). The shows were "Sleeping Beauty," "Dick Whittington and His cat," "The Wild Swans," "The Nightengale," "Rapunzel," "Rip Van Winkle," "The Magic Fishbone," "The Land of Green Ginger," "Hiawatha," "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," "The Little Lame Prince," "The Emperor's New Clothes," and "Mother Goose."

NBC tried with Shirley again in 1960 for 14 episodes  of less fairy tale-like material including "Land of Oz," "Little Men," "Madeline," "Prince and the Pauper," "Rebel Gun," "Black Arrow," "House of Seven Gables," "Tom and Huck," "Two for the Road," "Onawandah," "Return of Long John Silver," The Little Mermaid," Pegleg Pirate of Sulu," and "The Princess and the Goblins."

I'm not surprised that Bettelheim does not go into "The Ugly Duckling" since his book is primarily geared to fairy tales that were originally folk tales.  "The Ugly Duckling" and all other Andersen stories and Oscar Wilde's fairy tales are literature peculiar to their author's psyches, not original folk tales.  "The Little Mermaid" is indebted to "Undine" by Friedrich LaMotte-Fouque, source for Giraudoux's play and RUSALKA by Dvorak.

...And I just finished answering and/or returning five phone right in a row.  I would hang up one call, and then find a message waiting for me - apparently, I received two calls at the same time, and one of them "won" while the other went to voicemail.

And now, I must pretty myself to head out dinner which will be hosted and provided by DR FJL.  -I'm going to help him clear out his cache.

And then I'll be meeting my friend, Paul, who is up here from Florida this week, at 10:00 after his awards banquet is done at the Marriott Marquis.

From Charles Pogue:
Quote
Jane, the best experience was filming my Sherlock Holmes script for Hound of the Baskervilles in London.  A director who was a collaborator and fan, actors who came up to me and asked if they could change a line, a producer who insisted I be in dailies every day and in the editing room, taking notes and making suggestions (five of the six I made were taken).  Great experience in the greatest city in the world.  It's still the only one of my films I can watch and just enjoy without squirming and seeing all the things that went wrong.

I wish you a future with another film you can watch without squirming, one filmed in your home town would be nice.

We have a first edition, first printing of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.

:)  I'm so glad you made the trip.

Did anyone catch the second episode of BLEAK HOUSE last night?  I was planning on watching it tonight, but I got caught up on a kooky comedy on TCM starring Robert Montgomery and Myrna Loy.

I watched the BLEAK HOUSE premier episode on Friday night and I have to say that I was immediately drawn into it.  Incredibly atmospheric, even with all the "zoom and swoosh" cinematography.  And I guess it was because I was forewarned by the posts here about the thick accents, I was a little more attuned than I usually am when watching TV and I didn't have much trouble understanding the dialogue at all.

I don't overall recall much about the first BLEAK HOUSE that was done on Masterpiece Theatre years ago, but I do remember Diana Rigg's powerful performance as Lady Deadlocke.  I would have never thought that Gillian Anderson would compare but I find her every bit as striking in the role.  Likewise, I like this production's Ester, too (her name escapes me at the mo'.)  And has anyone recognized Pauline Collins as Miss Flyte?

I did - and Edith's, too. Unfortunately the light was so bad in that area of the hall that I couldn't get a picture. I was disappointed because the pop culture exhibit was being re-done, so a lot of stuff wasn't on display. For example, Carol Channing's dress from HELLO, DOLLY and the original Mr. Mistofelees costume from CATS were put away somewhere.

Many, many thanks to my hosts, Fred and Skip - a.k.a. DR FJL and his ever-lovin' Skip.  It was a truly loverly dinner, and both the wine and conversation were delectable.  ;)

And Toby and Dylan were perfect gentlemen tonight too.

:)

The proper technical term is "thingies".

Alas, my friend, Paul, was trapped at his awards banquet at the Marriott Marquis.  The evening started at 6:00 with cocktails.  Then the appetizer was served at 7:00... But then the entree wasn't served until 9:00... ???... And then they were not-so-entertained by "The Three Waiters"... And then awards were handed out... In short, they were running an hour behind.

-I didn't even find out if he won anything...

Hopefully, he'll be able to make it back up here this summer to see Lestat.

However, it has been nice actually seeing and talking to my roommate tonight.  We totally missed each other when I was up two weeks ago.  Fun, Fun, Fun!  And more wine too!

I watched yet another Bollywood movie this evening that I enjoyed very much.

AND I watched Skating With the Stars for the first and last time....don't think I will be tuning in again.  To see Kurt Browning reduced to...this....among others....  But then....well I won't continue because there is no need for a spoiler for folks who want to watch!

I will say that Bruce Jenner was surprisingly good.

That's because Dylan likes girls:

And Toby just likes to watch:

Time for to go to bed.

I hope MR BK is enjoying SOUTH PACIFIC....

And yes, DRELMORE, I think it was the MOST Caucasian Production of SP ever - I forget where I found the picture, I think it was a college production.  I like to go to GOOGLE and look for images of shows.  Some that come up are quite lovely, and some.....aren't!

I just finished watching Akira Kurosawa's STRAY DOG (1948)...an oddly titled, but gripping police detective film noir starring a young Toshiro Mifune as a handsome rookie cop whose gun is stolen and then used in a couple of violent crimes.

I don't know how it is that I have missed seeing any Kurosawa films in my lifetime! Well, I mean I saw part of RAN way back in the 1980s, but didn't really care much for it...so I guess that is why I never bothered to see any of his other films...but boy have I been missing out. I have several of Kurosawa's other films, all starring Toshiro Mifune, in my Netflix queue.

He is now my favorite Japanese director...after Inoshiro Honda, that is!  :D

Evening all,  I have keys, I have keys.......I don't officially close until Wed am, so I have keys, but I'm not going in again until then.  I met a neighbor dog, Sassy, this afternoon, she was very sweet and her owner seemed like a pleasant person. He asked if I was moving in, and introduced himself.

The former owners left me A LOT of stuff.  Big stuff like a 25"extension ladder, 2 lawnmowers..... i was amazed. They also left the place very dirty.  It was on the market for 6-7 months, but I was amazed how dirty it was after they moved their stuff out.

So, I have decided Merry Maids are in order and there is enough to do that I will pay to have the boxes moved. The bedroom is especially dirty, so I'm going to paint and then rip out the carpet.  Hopefully the floors will be as nice as the rest of the house.  I'm going to paint a couple other rooms as well.   I'm looking forward to that. I love the look of a freshly painted room

The really cool thing they left me was a folder with the history of the house written by a woman who's parents built the house in 1934 and whose family owned the house until 1960.  She's kept track of the people who have lived there over the years and visited a couple times. She writes for a newspaper in Greenville, TX. I have her name and email, so I'm going to write and tell her I'm there now and see what else she can tell me about the place

Today I received a Bollywood movie that was evidently on backorder...I had forgotten it was on backorder and ordered it again this weekend from another company. Unfortunately it is now too late to cancel that DVD from the other company. So now I will have two, count 'em two, DVDs of a 1960s Bollywood movie about abortion and teenage hijinks...or vice versa.

Oh, wow, that is so cool!

I would love to know who all lived in my house over the last 70 years of so.

I also want to give my congrats on this to you, DR George.  It's an awesome achievement!

And thank you!  I've been paying for four years without access to either of my credit cards.  Now that they're paid off, I want to get a new card with frequent flyer miles and start building some up.  My friend Margo has one and pays EVERYTHING with it...every time she goes out to eat, to the grocery, her daughter's college, she even pays her mortgage with it....everything.  I think I may have told this before, but last year, she and her three kids all flew to Hawaii for a week and a half (or so) for only $84!  Total (well, for the flight, anyway)!  That's what I want to do. ;D

DR George.  Partner Colin and I are  flying to New York with frequnt flier points - We pay virtually every bill and groceries and petrol with Amex. The points are then transfered to Qantas. (My Amazon.com habit helps too!)

Mr. Barnum, are you sure that your appreciation of these films doesn't have more to do with Mr. Mifune than it does with Mr. Kurosawa?

Back from the South Pacific screening, about which much more later in the notes.  I'm going to relax for a few moments before diving into them.

One amusing thing was the woman sitting in back of me - she tapped me on the shoulder and informed me that she'd seen me at Deceit last Thursday and even asked me a question.  I recognized her immediately.

What a small world.... A co-worker that jsut returned from LA saw Deceit also. She enjoyed it and thought Matt did quite well and had only heard of Matt Ashford from me...
