Well, you've read the notes, you've digested the notes, you thought the notes were sweet and sour and filled with wontons, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently on a slow boat to China.

Good morning, all!  The weird dreams continue: last night involved a meeting of CANDIDE fans in what appeared to be a cross between an HHW assemblage, the NYPL, and my grandmother's house in Ashland, KY.  I did have a lovely discussion with Leonard Bernstein about Victor Herbert during the course of it.  Barbara Cook was there, in  an 18th-Century gown, looking about 25 and weighing around 110 lbs.  We are approaching March, which will be the 50th anniversary of the show's closing, but I don't know what's going on in my mind!

DR Dan, I too love BLEAK HOUSE.  There are rougher times appproaching.  This is not one of Dickens' sunnier books.

I had no marmalade this morning. I did have oatmeal, raisins and a banana and a cup of coffee with which to begin my birthday.

Also on this date (February 2nd) in:

1653 New Amsterdam - now New York City - was incorporated

I knew there was a reason I moved here. Only 300 years before I was born New Amsterdam rose up and began preparations to welcome me.

Slow Boat to China, that's one of my favorite songs!

TOD:

A book I always wanted to see on film is Mark Helprin's WINTER'S TALE.  Because of its spans of time and location, I've believed that the only way it could be properly handled was as a miniseries for TV.  But having seen how such novels as LORD OF THE RINGS have been handled with aplomb, I can see it being done as a two hour plus motion picture.  As far as casting, the only thing that comes to mind right now would be signing up Johnny Depp as lead character Peter Lake.

And I'm very surprised that Caleb Carr's THE ALIENIST has never been filmed.  One would think that this would be a filmmaker's dream, with its turn of the century atmospheric setting and its mystery/thriller plot.  At the time I first read it, I pictured Judd Hirsch as the psycholigist/detective.  I'm not immediately sure who I would cast today.  Dare I say Mandy Patinkin?

A book that I think would make a fine independent film (indepenednet film only becuase of limited audience) would be the Foster Hirsch bio of Harold Prince called HAROLD PRINCE AND THE AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE.  The new edition, which includes Bounce and other more recent projects, has an unexpectedly beautiful arc in the return to working with Sondheim that I think could be meaningful to indie film audiences even beyond the theater nuts.  Whether it would work comemercially is another story, but I'd love to see this book filmed, possibly with Ed Harris starring as Prince, not sure who as Sondheim.  Sam Mendes would, I think, be the director of choice.

Mike Barnum... I hope that the new gas boiler you are getting is NOT a SLANT-FIN brand boiler.  if it is, reconsider!! Ours just broke down again last night, I am sitting here missing work waiting for the plumber to come.

We had this put in new 6 years ago to replace the boiler that we had from 1955.  the 1955 bolier had never broken down but we feared it might and decided to invest $3800 in a brand new one to be on the safe side.  Well this is the 6th winter in 6 years that it has broken down.  The first time was the day after it was installed.

I have got so many shows on the DVR that I think it will take most of the day to watch them, to get ready for another barrage of them to go onto the DVR tonight!

And I read that the WB is moving SUPERNATURAL from Tuesdays to Thursdays at 9 after SMALLVILLE starting in (I think) mid-March which will be yet another show to be either watched or recorded.

And I guess those of you who are fans of COMMANDER IN CHIEF saw that ABC is putting the show on hold to debut a new comedy series (SONS and DAUGHTERS) in the slot. COMMANDER will return in mid-April to play its four remaining shows. Whether it's renewed for next season is up in the air right now. The network has not been happy with the steady ratings erosion that the show has experienced during the season.

Being in the film business, I'm not in the habit of giving away potentially good ideas.  So I won't say which books I think should be filmed.  You never know...I may get around to adapting them some day.

Mystery author Sue Grafton has said she will never allow her Kinsey Milhone series of alphabet mysteries to be filmed either for the movies or television.

But if she did, I'd love to see M IS FOR MALICE filmed. It's got a nice crime drama plot and a poignant conclusion that brings the story full circle.

When I first started reading the books, I thought Jamie Lee Curtis would make a fine Kinsey. Now, perhaps Sandra Bullock or even Cameron Diaz.

From last night's late night posts...

DR DakotaCelt - Most of the Broadway houses have Assisted Listening Systems/Devices available for their patrons.  Heck, I even know some people who are not HOH who get the headsets in order to hear the show better.

A couple of years back, there was an initiative to have more signed performances, but I haven't heard much about it lately (pardon the bad pun).  However, I believe some of the smaller theatres that have subscription series do designate a performance or two throughout the run for Hearing Impaired (captioning) and/or Visually Impaired (audio description) audience members.  You would probably need to contact the box office for each theatre for that info rather than Telecharge, TicketMaster, etc.

As for the Topic of the Day...

As of this point, "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" is still in pre-production.  Stephen Daldry is slated to direct.

*And as soon as I finished reading the book - well, even as I was reading it - I thought it would make a wonderful movie.

I've always wanted to see "Catcher In the Rye" on the big screen too.  -Although, I think there was a feeble attempt at it a few years ago with something called, "Chasing Holden".

And I would love to see the three novels by Jack Finney that appear in the collection "Three By Finney" made into movies:

"The Woodrow Wilson Dime" - A great time-travelling tale.
"Marion's Wall" - This was the basis for the movie "Maxie", and, alas, the movie bears only a slight resemblance to the source material.
"The Night People" - It would provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase the city of San Francisco.

How 'do, all?

I agree that "Kavalier and Clay" will make a great film. I'm looking forward to it when it finally happens.

I would have said "A Million Little Pieces" would have been a good choice, but considering the discomfort I had just READING some of the chapters, I can't imagine seeing it. Not to mention the recent scandal surrounding the book - I doubt that any studio would touch it as a potential property now.

Last night's re-run of "Lost":

SPOILER

SPOILER

(And yes, for anyone who never saw the episode, and recorded it to watch later, this would be a spoiler, of sorts).

As disappointed as I was that they repeated an episode, I was totally delighted to see this one again.  Hurley's backstory is wonderful...and Hurley, himself, is an intriguing character not lately given much to do.  I loved that last scene when Hurley revealed his secret to Charley, who then refused to take him seriously.

I am pretty proud of myself that I can actually ask that question and know what it means!  ;)

I can not actually prepare a powerpoint presentatin, that is something my 12 year old daughter is doing for a school project.

She is doing a project entitled "Music of the American Revolution" and is showing how the lyrics were used as propaganda by the different sides, using the same tunes and rewriting the lyrics.

She has found some "ree and legally downloadable MIDI files"on line for  "Yankee Doodle", "Heart of Oak" and "Nancy Dawson" and wants to import them into the slides where the lyrics for each song will be shown.

Last night she how to do it and I just looked at her blankly.

DRMATTH - Yes, DRMBARNUM has already answered the question posed by your Valentine....it was indeed Miss Coleen Gray who played THE LEECH WOMAN, I think MBARNUM just interviewed her!

However, in addition to Miss Gray - the film featured Grant Williams aka The Incredible Shrinking Man, Gloria Talbott (the Girl Who Bought Superman & Daughter of Dr Jekyll), and Phillip Terry (ex Mr Joan Crawford).

He mentioned Yvette in connection with Allison, because Yvette played the second femme role in ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN....most mainstream film watchers would probably know her best as the laughing girl on the telephone in New Year's Eve party sequence of SUNSET BOULEVARD.

Hayes and Vickers shared an agent - professionally.  Hopefully he has read my internet biography of Allison (now I am beginning to sound like DRJMK!).

DR Vixmom - Looking at the PowerPoints I have on my computer here at work that I've downloaded and modified, it looks like The Vixter should first save her clips to a file on her computer.  Then, when she's on the slide to which she wants to attach a clip, go to the INSERT menu at the top of the screen and from the drop-down menu select Movies and Sounds.  From there I don't know exactly what will happen, but this might be a start.

Her project sounds very cool and I hope she gets an A+!

It cost $130,  which I hadn't budgeted for, but hey I guess it could have been worse!

I have always thought that the CAT WHO....books by Lilian Jackson Braun would make a nifty TV series, sort of along the lines of MURDER SHE WROTE.

I would cast Tom Sellek in the lead role as Jim Qwillerman. He has the right personality, I think, and he is at about the right age now.

Freddy might do a nice job as Koko...even though he isn't pure Siamese.  :D

Ohmigod!  Yesterday was Victor Herbert's 147th birthday!  I totally forgot, or I would have asked you all to listen to some of his music.  I listen to every note written for BABES IN TOYLAND about twice a week, and I still haven't decided if the most beautiful song written for it is "Barney O'Flynn" or "Mignonette," but it's a score full of beauty, charm and wit.  I think he's a greatly under-appreciated composer awaiting re-evaluation and I apologize to all of you, and to Victor, for  forgetting him yesterday.  I blame it on the colonoscopy appointment.  and Jose.

In honor of Mr. Herbert here is a portion of a song for those of us who feel Math Challenged. It's a little number he called I Can't Do The Sum. There are many more verses, as Mr. Moore can confirm.

Verse 1
If a steamship weighed ten thousand tons
And sailed five thousand miles
With a cargo large of overshoes
And carving knives and files,
If the mates were almost six feet high
And the bos'n near the same,
Would you subtract or multiply
To find the captain's name?

Refrain
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Put down six and carry two,
Gee, but this is hard to do.
You can think and think and think
Till your brains are numb,
I don't care what teacher says,
I can't do the sum

And here's a verse, unpublished in the sheet music but published in the WOMAN'S HOME COMPANION, Feb. 1904:

If Laura's mother's hair is gold
When once that hair was black
   If Katie's little brother knows
Just why the cat came back
If canned tomatoes have gone up
   To forty cents a can,
   And Mary's age is twenty-four
Why, then, how old is Ann?

Refrain
   Oh! Oh! Oh!
Put down six and carry two,
Gee, but this is hard to do.
You can think and think and think
   Till your brains are numb,
I don't care what teacher says,
   I can't do the sum

And I always liked the cruelty of this verse:

If Clarence took fair Gwendolin
Out for an auto ride,
And if at sixty miles an hour
One kiss to capture tried,
And quite forgot the steering gear
On her honeyed lips to sup,
How soon could twenty men with brooms
Sweep Clare and Gwennie up?

Refrain
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Put down six and carry two,
Gee, but this is hard to do.
You can think and think and think
Till your brains are numb,
I don't care what teacher says,
I can't do the sum

In this age of Lemony Snicket, I think we're ready for a BABES IN TOYLAND that deals with child abuse, murder and demonic possession once again, everything NBC, Shirley Temple and Disney omitted.

I watched SCANDAL un film du Akira Kurasawa....made in 1950 and starring Mr Toshiro Mifune and Miss Shirley Yamaguchi.

It has been discussed in these here notes before.

I enjoyed it very much.  Mr Mifune plays a hip painter who rides a motorcycle who offers a ride to a stranded stranger who is a famous singer....he realizes later.  They are photographed standing on the balcony of a hotel...and the tabloid press proclaim them SECRET LOVERS!!

A young Mr Mifune is VERY handsome and Miss Yamaguchi is lovely.

I liked the film very much....

No breakdowns, that is, until she handed me the bill for my initial consultation! Apparently she forgot that I'm covered by my insurance so that I only have to pay $25 per visit. She tried to charge me 50% of the initial consulation, which was $220! I'm in the wrong business....

In other news...

I just spent the past hour or so going through some of my old clothes.  I was able to keep about five shirts and four pairs of slacks.  *The slacks - well, actually Banana Republic khakis and chinos - are also "old" - I bought them almost three years ago hoping that I would be able to squeeze comfortably into them someday...  Well, that someday is here (well, almost here), so...  **Yes, they were on sale, and I just couldn't pass it up - three of them still have the original tags on them, never been worn!

The rest of the clothes are being laundered and/or are in the trash.  And I'll be making a drop off at Goodwill tomorrow.  I have a couple shirts I remember buying in high school!  And which are now way too big for me - Was I ever really an XXL?!?!?  *And a few of them were part of Britches (purposely) over-sized line, so...

There was one truly laugh out loud moment...  I came across a baseball-type jersey, a Mickey Mouse one.  When I tried it on, the term "tent" came to mind.  I could actually wrap it around me!

It started out with good reviews for the original few episodes, but since the show was taken over by Stephen Botchco, the reviews have not been so good. Most critics I have read have not liked the direction of the show or the calamity-of-the-week plots that he's inflicted on the series. Also, as I've read, DOnald Sutherland's duplicitous character has been reconceived and not to their liking.

Again, I don't watch the show; I'm only reporting on what I've read.

Also, as I've read, DOnald Sutherland's duplicitous character has been reconceived and not to their liking.

Again, I don't watch the show; I'm only reporting on what I've read.

I liked the show...and Davis, especially...but Sutherland became wearisome in the early going....on one show, he'd get the upper hand...on the next, Davis would seize it back...I had neither the strengh nor interest in watching this yo-yo of a show continue in that vein.

Glad she won the Golden Globe....but the show ain't for me no more.

I heard and partially saw  a TV commercial fpr lestat on the TV this morning.  It was during the TODAY show which I had on for background noise while I was doing some chores and waiting for the  plumber.

When I realize what i was hearing , I ran in  but I just got to the set in time to see a closeup of Hugh Panaro fade out to the poster picture.

I have a question for those with TV tech experience....what is the difference between an HD tv and a plasma tv. Is it good enought simply to get a plasma tv?

Most of the stuff that I watch is pre-1970, so I wouldn't guess it would matter much as far as HD tv goes...or am I wrong?

I could maybe someday afford a nice sized plasma...but an HD TV is just not in the cards any day soon.

Dan - I don't mean to question how great your place of business is, because i'm sure you and your co-workers must love it, but maybe someone in your human resources area possibly needs to look at what's being told to people about the job vs. what the person actually found when he got there.   I've had at least two jobs in my life where I knew on the very first day that the fit was no good, and I'd wished I had either the guts or at the time the financial security to just call up and say sorry this isn't working out.  But I stayed a while, one of those times to my detriment when the time finally came to leave, because had I left on the first day, my old job would still have been open and they would have welcomed me back with open arms (as they did several months and much tsuris on the "new" job later).  I just wonder if the job that person was promised was not what he found, the wonderful lunch notwithstanding.  :)

My good buddy Dave who lives in Seattle is sending me a compilation CD (music of his choosing) each month during the year 2006...I received January's CD yesterday and am enjoying it as I speak.

This one has sort of an Oriental/Eastern European theme to it...Right now is the  song JAPANESE SANDMAN by Frank Chacksfield and his Orchestra (1957). Next is NIGHT-TIME IN OLD SHANGHAI by Whitey Smith's Majestic Hotel Orchestra (c. 1928)....I am loving it!

I am bound to find some new favorite orchestras and singers this year thanks to Dave!

Another neat song from that era Vixmom is Barbara Allen. One song that I like Froggy went a-courtin'

Thanks, everyone, for your most appreciated birthday greetings!

I've been busy with volunteer work at various film festivals. Last week I worked the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Had a chance to take in some very interesting movies--one of which terrified me and I wish I had not seen. Titled "Right At Your Door", it details multiple terrorist attacks on Los Angeles.  I enjoyed "Little Miss Sunshine", "Friends With Money", and "Stephanie Daley".

Tonight I'm working the opening film at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. It's a World Premiere, "Ask The Dust", based on the novel by John Fante. The director is Robert Towne, the Academy Award winner for writing the screenplay for the film "Chinatown". He is attending this evening, along with stars Colin Farrell, Salma Hayek, and Donald Sutherland.

Afterwards, I intend to celebrate with a large piece of chocolate cake topped with peppermint ice cream, my favorite.

Thank you again, all you Hainsies and Kimlets, for the kind birthday wishes!

I am also disappointed that the show will not be renewed. I rather enjoyed it.

I swear I have nothing to do with that movie! Honest! I never saw it either!
Mr Vincent Cassel, son of Jean-Pierre Cassel, seems to have a tendency to play weird characters; actually, he's in a new film, he's also producing, that has just been released yesterday and that deals with some sick plot too!

Re: Veronica Mars

I have never heard of this show. I am curious....

I think season one is out on dvd.

I highly recommend this show. Although it is on UPN so you may not get it.

It stars Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars.  She is an 18ish high school student who is basically a Nancy Drew type.  It's sort of the OC meets Murder She Wrote.

Veronica solves mysteries around her school. But it's more than that.  The show is critically acclaimed by many.  And it is very smartly written.  You have to think hard while watching because not everything is spelled out.  This was especially evident last week, when you had to use your brain to figure out what was happening.

I don't get UPN but my sis tapes it for me every week.  So I don't get to watch it till the weekend.  But if you can get your hand on the season one dvd, try it.  It's really good.

Your're right, why no movie yet?? I have to think on the casting, but I think you may be on to something.

Back from my second visit with the shrink. I got a lot of things out. It was good. I cried just a tad, but other than that, no breakdowns.

No breakdowns, that is, until she handed me the bill for my initial consultation! Apparently she forgot that I'm covered by my insurance so that I only have to pay $25 per visit. She tried to charge me 50% of the initial consulation, which was $220! I'm in the wrong business....

And I'm getting into the right one!!

Up until a few hours ago, I would have said no.  But even in the last hour that I have been catching up on posts, my health has taken a turn for the worse.  Rodzinski will confirm that I almost NEVER get sick.  In the fall I had a medium cold that lasted a few days and I struggled against when I should have had the sense to stay home.  I had a new year's flu/virus that I now attribute to his family (who admittedly brought something with them from Ohio) and now I have a super runny nose and sore throat, I'm guessing courtesy of Rodzinski.  Crapballs!!

Prior to falling ill, I had a delightful small dinner with a former mouse co-worker.  She caught me up on all of the office gossip, but more than anything it was nice to see her again.  I do miss some of the folks from the old days.

Plasmas come in two flavors: EDTV and HDTV. The enhanced display TVs have picture comparable in sharpness to a DVD. HDTV is about double that resolution.

HDTVs of varying kinds and sizes are actually less expensive than plasmas right now.

But you might as well buy for the future when you do decide to buy which means a widescreen set with HDTV-capable picture.

I am also disappointed that the show will not be renewed. I rather enjoyed it.

No one has said it was canceled. It's going on hiatus in early March for 6 weeks and will return to play out its season. ABC has made no decisions about its shows for next season yet. In fact, the only shows that have been renewed for next season (apart from the ones like ER and LAW & ORDER which had multi-year commitments) are NBC's MY NAME IS EARL and THE OFFICE.

Good Evening!

Another very good audience tonight.  Even the orchestra got applause after the Entr'Acte! -Which is usually "muted" by the change of lights and the direct segue into the opening of Act 2.

And it also happened to be the birthday of our cellist, Deb, too!  And we also had carrot cake.  Yummy!

...And there were some additional goodies in the greenroom tonight - some "leftovers" from a dinner/reception they had in the Old Vat.  Some amazing goat cheese dip concoction - pine nuts, dried cranberries, scallions, etc. - as well as dolmades, hummus, baba ganoujh and tzatziki.  Guess they had a Grecian dinner.

Enjoyed two more SUPERMAN episodes - "The Golden Vulture" and "Jimmy Olsen Boy Editor." The latter was especially funny.

Yes, it's going to be warm here, too, tomorrow. Right now it's likely to get near 70! By Sunday, back to the 40s for highs.

T.O.D.

I agree with Mr. Barnum that I would like to see THE CAT WHO.... books by Lilian Jackson Braun brought to life.  I would much rather see them as a series of films or television films, rather than a TV series as Mike suggested.  However, unlike Mr. Barnum, I would go with what a number of people have told me before, and vote for myself to play Qwill.

Another book I would like to see brought to the big screen is THE SHIPKILLER by Justin Scott.  It was a wonderful thrillride of a book.  When I bought my copy back in the 80s it said on the cover "Soon to be a major motion picture".   Well, I am still waiting.

FOUR KINGS has just enough laughs (smiles actually) to keep me watching. It's no laugh riot, that's for sure, but tonight's episode was about the best the series has had in its four airings.

YIKES!

And I just saw the news about the stabbing of Joseph Church.  He was the musical director of The Who's Tommy and The Lion King on Broadway as well as a slew of other projects.  It was a totally random act.  Thankfully, he's in the hospital and they his condition is stable, and they expect him to fully recover.  And they also caught his attacker.

Happy birthdays, Dear Readers Ben and Iris!!

Absolutely nothing interesting has happened in any of my classes so far this semester. Can you believe that none of my teachers have given me anything to complain about? What am I going to do now?

The biggest thing that has happened lately is that a new pita place opened near my bus stop and I got a pita there today that fell apart while I was halfway through eating it.

Topic of the Day:  "Good Omens : The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.  I remember reading this when it first came out in the early 1990s and I thought that it read like it could be a movie.  It was real good and quite funny. :)

I would love to see an Margery Allingham mystery done on the big screen. I know the BBC has done it.

Peter Davison in the role or Pierce Brosnan....

Another book I would love to see done on the big screen is any of Debbie Macomber's series called Dakota Valley...

Lorraine Snellings series called Red River Valley...
Scarlett Johannssen in the lead female role

Lillian Carolyn Braun series also would be good....

Audrey Neffenegger's book, Time Traveler's Wife... Excellent book....

I must be going.  Tomorrow, I'm working concessions for the Washington Center for the Performing Arts CenterFest celebration, here in Olympia.  It's the Center's biggest annual fundraiser.  They bring in a big act and sell tickets for a lot of money.  Anyway, the big act this year is The Pointer Sisters!  It should be a real good concert.  And a long day...I have to be there at 4:30 p.m. and stay until it's all over!  What was I thinking?!?

DRMBARNUM - Japanese Sandman is one of my favorite tunes!

Glad to see DRRODZINSKI up and around - EBB TIDE is one of Frances' more boring films, but it is in color!  She doesn't show up for quite awhile, but when she does she's brandishing a pistol!

Dagny Taggart -  Elizabeth Montgomery
John Galt - Gary Conway

I finally remembered my ASK BK question....but it's late, too....

When they were shooting the Hollywood episodes of I LOVE LUCY - there was a backdrop that was seen outside the Ricardo's hotel room that included a hotel and some different Hollywood landmarks.

When it was daytime it was brightly lit of course.  When it was night, some lights were on in some of the buildings of the backdrop....

Was this a separate backdrop - painted of the SAME location that was put in place for these scenes or was it the SAME backdrop with some different lighting?  Do you think?

Just in from the preview of "Hello, Dolly" at San Mateo High School.  I'm just playing the show and haven't been to rehearsals, but the students are doing a great job.  The orchestra is mostly students, and a few "older" students, and they are playing really well.  There are a lot of strings and they are playing OUT and are in tune.  Such a classic "Hello, Dolly!" is and so much fun to play.  I don't know what it is, but I still get goose bumps on the last chorus of "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" - damn that Jerry can write.

Back from the show and a late-night supper with a surprise guest, about which more later in the notes - which I must hurry and write right this very moment.

Excellent vibes and xylophones to Joe Church, a very nice fellow.
