And the word of the day is: XEROPHILOUS!

Smoke on your pipe and put that in.

Has Ann caught up?

Jose/Jrand:  Nope, made up my mind not to attend the matinee - many reasons, some of which Jose would probably understand.

I shall be truant for the day . I'm attending a funeral some three hours or more drive away. ( a family friend for 55 years who would have been 80 in a couple of weeks time).

Good morning, all!  I really like quiet Sunday mornings; Mozart's Great Mass in C-minor is playing, the coffee's on the stove, and 82nd Street this morning seems very subdued, which isn't always the case among the homeless waiting for food from Holy Trinity Church across the street.

I'm back to Toyland for a few hours this morning, then I've got an arrangement to work on here.  Tonight, I need to finish getting my tax receipts in order for Thursday's visit to the accountant, and I'm looking forward to the next instalment of BLEAK HOUSE.

Yesterday's topic was lines from plays and musicals, so I'll start a topic; since a lot of operas are also based on plays, do our DRs have any favorite arias, duets, or ensembles from the opera world?  To make it a bit easier, I've included favorites from CANDIDE, since in 1956 it was billed as "a comic operetta" and a lot of these moronic current productions like Trevor Nunn's miss the fact the score is an operatic one, but I also believe PORGY AND BESS amd SWEENEY TODD are operas.

I'm partial to these:
  ARIAS
O Mio Babbino Caro (Gianni Schicchi)
     Visi d'Arte (Tosca)
     Glitter and Be Gay (Candide)
     Lucy's Aria from "The Telephone"
Steal Me, Sweet Thief (The Old Maid and the Thief)
Ann's Cavatina and Cabaletta from "The Rakes's Progress"
     Song to the Moon (Rusalka)
     Mi Tradi (Don Giovanni)
     Lonely House (Street Scene)
Tarquinius' Ride to Rome (The Rape of Lucretia)
My Man's Gone Now (Porgy & Bess)
  DUETS
     Tenor/Baritone Duet (The Pearl Fishers)
     Seguidille (Carmen)
     In the Dooryard (Street Scene)
     Concerto Duet (Orphee aux Enfers)
     Black Swan (The Medium)
  ENSEMBLES
Act One Trio (Cosi Fan Tutte)
     Septet (La Vie Parisienne)
     Make Our Garden Grow (Candide)
I Am So Proud (The Mikado)
We'll Walk to the Spiiney (Albert Herring)

Good morning, DRJRand55!  Why do I suspect that cornfield innocence is all a put on to hide some glorious light?  I agree with you about the Widow, one of the great musical theatre scores, and "Un Bel Di"!  With Puccini you can hardly ever go wrong:  Sir Andrew thought enough of the duet in FANCIULLA DEL WEST to steal it for POTO!

The first aria that instantly pops in my mind as my favorite is "Nessun Dorma" from TURANDOT. I love to hear Pavarotti's renditions of it, but even Deanna Durbin did an English version of it to brilliant effect in FIRST LOVE.

Reading over that list of upcoming Warner DVDs was very exciting seeing the classics that are on their way to us, but I'm VERY disappointed to see that THE PIRATE wasn't one of the listed titles. I will do my best to ask about it at the forum conference on February 21st if my dial-up connection can log on. Last time they did this, I wouldn't gain entry and had to read the transcript the next day.

Reading bk's talk about the Super Bowl reminds me that I have never watched an entire Super Bowl in the previous 39 that they've had. In fact, I could count the total minutes I've watched them combined on the fingers of my two hands. Just not at all interested in them, but I'm sure today is a highly anticipated day to a great many folks. I'm glad for them, and I hope the game turns out to be an exciting one for them.

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?  You'd think it was Super Bowl Sunday or something, when in fact it is Super Non-Bowl Sunday.

Jrand: The only one who knows I won't be there is our associate producer.  Whether she tells others is something I don't know, but it shouldn't be newsworthy, really.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I let myself stay in bed until Noon.  -Of course, since I didn't really end up falling asleep until around 4:00am... -Was just sort of restless last night...  My mind is just starting to get in gear for my return back to NYC later this week... And all the stuff I would like to get done before heading back up... I have a feeling I'll be making lots of lists over the next few days, and I'll have a lot of prioritizing to get done.  -But that's a good thing.
Title: Re:SUPER NON-BOWL SUNDAY
Post by: JoseSPiano on February 05, 2006, 10:32:30 AM
As for DR elmore's Topic of the Day...

I would basically duplicate your list, DR elmore.  -However, I do have to say that G&S still is not my cup of tea - even as casual listening.  -I think I'm still scarred from playing rehearsals for the Washington Savoyards a couple of years ago... Some of those dyed-in-the-wool G&Sers are, well, sort of scary.

;)

Otherwise...

"Steal Me, Sweet Thief" was one of the first arias I ever accompanied.  Beautiful, emotional.  I also like the baritone aria from The Old Maid and the Thief, "When the air sings of summer" - at least I think that's what the title is.  Isn't it?

"Ebben? Ne andro lontano" from La Wally - Yes, I first heard this in the movie Diva.

"Elle a fui" from Les Contes d'Hoffmann

"Deh vieni non tardar", "Dove sono", "Porgi amor", - Mozart, Le Nozze di Figaro

"The Embroidery Aria" - Britten, Peter Grimes - Truly a haunting piece of music.

"To this we've come", Madga's Aria - Menotti, The Consul - Another haunting aria.

"What a movie!" - Bernstein, Trouble in Tahiti - And this one is hoot to play too!  Fun!

...And that's about all that comes to mind for now, although I know I have many, many more operatic favorites.

BK - Yes, I think I know what you mean.  I do understand.

...And I also have to say that it's been very nice not having a 2:00 matinee today... Just been a nice leisurely morning/afternoon... Well, since I didn't get out bed until about an hour and a half ago... ;)

I'll head in for the show around 4:30.  We have the kids pre-show rehearsal at 5:15, then the show at 6:00.  And we should be done by 8:23...  Then since they will start some of the strike tonight, I have to clear my area of the pit.  Thankfully, I just have to make sure to take my keyboard pedals and chair with me, so I should be out the pit in no time, but I'll probably help things along by dressing my cables and such.  And then the party in the lobby...

It's been a good run.  Good people.  Good process.  Yes, there were some "issues" for me during the rehearsal process, but the show must go on, and it has.  I really have had a wonderful time, and the past couple of weeks have been a great warm-up for Lestat in NYC.  On Broadway.

I just feel a little weird right now in that I'm not really feeling sad about the show closing.  And I even know, sense, that this will be my last show at Arena for a while - regardless of the success or failure of Lestat.  It's just time to move on.

...Of course, I'll probably be blubbering like an idiot come the final downbeat...  We'll see...

To pick some by performers I normall love to listen to:

Van Halen's "Jump" gets me turning to another station pretty quickly.  Also, Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" for some reason.  And to be honest, there are times when I just don't have the patience for the whole 8 minutes of "American Pie."

Favorite lines by audience members:

At HAPGOOD (to the ticket-taker):  "Sir, that sign says gunshots will be heard at this performance.  Why only THIS performance?"

At THE HEIRESS, about twenty minutes into the second act, an elderly woman was heard explaining helpfully to her friend:  "You see, Mildred, she's an heiress."

Overlooking your possible distain for Sir Andrew, if the above are operas, why not "Evita"; and Cameron notwithstaning, it would seem "Miss Saigon" should also qualify.

I used to get choked up during the last performance or two of a show I had grown to love. Blubbered like a baby during the entire final week of '1776,' and that was the second time I had done a run in the show (though playing different characters).

Watched more MARY TYLER MOORE episodes. The utter brilliance of that show still amazes me.

The last episode I watched was positively inspired in the plotting of the show and totally unhackneyed. Started off as a show about Lou not getting to go to Las Vegas because of a snowed-in airport. A poker game is begun. The show segues into a Murray-story about his compulsive gambling habit before ending with a capper where Murray, in debt to Ted, bets him double or nothing about his ability not to screw up the pronunciation of a certain Japanese official while on the air. Each of those three supporting actors were given juicy scenes they could act to the skies.

All of this in 26 minutes of show (and gaining HUGE laughs at the same time). Genius.

To my way of thinking, the ambition of the score and the compositional worth.  Since neither Sir Andrew nor the Frenchmen seem to know what to do in terms of dramatic and compositional development of their tunes, I don't consider either worthy of being considered operatic writers.  Perhaps soap operatic writers.

There was actually a story about this on NPR I believe the other morning.... Or it might have been on the local news-radio station...

Detroit does have an enclosed station.  The NFL does favor stadiums in more temperate climes - the Superbowl is back in Miami next year.  They would like to have more "northern" Superbowls, but weather is a major consideration considering the economics of the venture.

And one story I did hear on NPR yesterday morning was one about how small record labels are "saving" the Original Cast Recording.  It was a tie-in with a report about the Grammy nominees for Best Original Cast Recording (or however that's worded).  They had interviews with people from Ghostlight and PS Classics, and I'm sure Kritzerland will be included in next year's round-up.

:)

Indie Labels Take a Risk, and Win, with Musicals (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5187068)

DR George, the first line of the recitative that begins it is "Viens, Malika," and it's usually referred to as the Flower Duet or Barcarolle from LAKME, as opposed to the Flower Duet from MADAMA BUTTERFLY or the famouse barcarolle from TALES OF HOFFMANN.  And I agree, it's a beautiful duet.

Unlike the majority of folks here, I am a big football fan and never miss the Super Bowl.  I've seen all of every game for the past 20 years, except for a couple times during college when I had to leave for work at halftime.  Oh yeah, and it just so happens that the team I've been a diehard fan of all those years (and that included some truly ugly years) is playing today, so there's no way I'll miss a single play this afternoon!

Wouldn't you think that Phoenix would get a Super Bowl often? It is perfect spring weather here in February. We were told we couldn't have a Super Bowl until we passed the Martin Luther King holiday. We did that and got one Super Bowl. Then they told us that we have to build a NEW stadium before we get another. Said stadium is under construction.

Having grown up in Detroit, it's been interesting to me to see all the press the Motor City has received.

I'm for Seattle, because I don't like what Pittsburgh did to the Cincinnati Bengals in the playoffs.  And, yes, even though we watch for the commercials, we also pay attention to the game.  Go, 'hawks!

I'll bet some of you thought I'd changed my mind and gone to the matinee.  But, here I am, planning the musical theater workshop, and writing my short story (just did four really good pages - somehow I've done sixteen pages of this thing over the last week-and-a-half, and it's only going to be a twenty page story).   It's been quite warm here today, and cloudy but lovely.

Now, might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  65 posts at 3:00???  This will NOT do, oh, no, this will NOT do.  I see people but I don't see posts.  I'd like to see people AND posts.  Why if everyone here suddenly made fifty posts in a row, we'd set a new Sunday record.

Oh, I see how it's going to be - no posts in an hour, sixty-six posts and a new all-time low.  So be it, baby, so be it.  And all because of football - if there's anything more rectal than that I haven't seen it yet.  Even last year's Super Stupid Bowl Sunday wasn't like this!

Anyway, off to the theater.

I am back from seeing KING KONG.

I am posting this as a spoiler, although I don't think this post will reveal much if you are even remotely familiar with the story...here goes...

Right now I HATE myself for even going to this movie...it was the most rancid waste of cellulloid I have ever sat through...and I have sat through some real stinkers in my time.

Now, keep in mind I was very much looking forward to seeing this movie...I figured it would be quite entertaining...but it was 3 hours of pure torture for me. It was one of those "lets see how many action scenes with special effects we can throw into this movie and then when we get to the kitchen sink we will through that in as well...several times over...and over...and over!"

Now, I never thought Fay Wray was all that particularly great in the original...she was ok, but not great...as an actress she had her limitations...as Ann Darrow her character screamed way too much and she didn't seem to have a lot of personality...but at least she reacted to the situation that she was in as any normal human being would...she was terrified of this huge, hairy beast...in the remake the herione is appropriately horrified at first, but by the end of the movie she seems to have fallen in love with the creature...despite the fact that he has killed, on purpose, several hundred people...not including those that he accidently killed. There is just no way this gal would do the things she does in this movie...the brontosaurus stampede was the silliest and most unrealistic thing I have ever come across. GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER was more believable! Here you have a dozen dinosaurs running for the hills along with another dozen tiny human beings, some of whom are overweight, elderly, and out of shape...and yet the humans are running just as fast, if not faster, then the stampeding dinos!

People fall thousands of feet into a ravine....and live! Only to be attacked by tswarms of giant, killer, flesh eating bugs...which they use their machine guns to get rid off. Uhg, it was awful!

And then there were all of these extra characters who really had no purpose in the film.

And the "great wall" that the natives had built hundreds of years ago to keep Kong out of the village...well, the way Kong could climb and jump around he could easily have climbed right over that wall without hesitation!

And there was so much more that was wrong with this movie....I can't even begin to tally them all.

I had not problem with them remaking KING KONG, I thought it was a wonderful idea...I loved the original, even with its many faults... but this new one was just  too putrid...and that is the kindest thing I can think to say about it.

My buddy Ron hated it just as much as I did...and we are both very, very sorry that we went to see it. We were both ready to walk out of the theater half way through the film.

Just my opinion of course...you mileage may vary.

Now for the good things...the costumes were great, very authentic...the first part of the movie, before they landed on the island, was atmospheric and not at all bad.

Hi all!

I had a pretty good scare this week because my Mom fell while I was at work.  Long story short—she’s ok.  Thank Goodness!

I have only watched one Super Bowl game from start to finish in my life.  That is not to say that I understood anything that went on during said game except that the Bucs won.

I can’t say much for this game except that Mom wants Pittsburgh to win because she’s from there.  It’s all the same to me.

I have no plans on seeing Kong.  Mostly because I consider the film a tear jerker (for me at least) and I hate to cry in public.

I heard that WIW is closing soon.  That's really too bad.  I never did think that fat suit was a good thing for whatever actor was inside it but it's really sad about all the other illnesses the cast has had.

I'm not watching the Stuporbowl ;) (Jed and anyone else, I really am happy that you love football).  I've been watching tapes of shows from Friday night and am about to watch "Battlestar Galactica."  I've pretty much watched everything else:  "Ghost Whisperer," "In Justice," "Living With Fran," Reba" and "Twins" (those last three, I also watched episodes from two weeks ago).  I also have to watch Friday's Oprah with Dave Chappelle, then I'm all caught up.  And I only caught about two minutes of the half-time show.  The Rolling Stones = :P (just my opinion).  I do need to pay attention when it's over because "Grey's Anatomy" (what does "Code Black" mean!?!?) is supposed to be on right afterwards...or maybe it'll be on at its regular time at 10:00.  I've read conflicting reports.

I also have a tape set to tape tonight's "Inside the Actor's Studio" with guest, Liza.  I am looking forward to this. :)

Keith has been trashing food in bags, that hadn’t been transferred to plastic containers, and spraying our pantry with bleach.  We have had some kind of little bugs in there we were told like moisture and mold.  Then we had a moisture and mold expert come out and he didn’t find a problem there, under the house yes, but not inside the house.  The bug guy said the bugs shouldn’t be in the food and spraying the area shouldn’t make a difference.  We have to try something.

The bleach is making me rather ill so I’m off to wash the rest of the dinner dishes and get out of this part of the house.

Back from watching the Super Bowl.  The first half wasn't too exciting. But the 3rd quarter was quite something.  And that Steelers touchdown with the guy who used to be a quarterback was outstanding.

It's funny I don't really have a favorite between the two teams. But my brother-in-law is a huge Steelers fan. And I just found myself subconsciously cheering with him.  It was so funny. At one point he was holding my niece. And his team was scoring. So he was calling her the lucky baby and would not let her go. And everybody wanted to touch the lucky baby. So cute!

Hello! Good heavens only 115 posts so far!!
Well, I wasn't watching football I was working on the new house....again or still....they finished ripping out carpet and all the tacks and nails and made a new door for the storm shelter (yes, a real storm shelter) I stripped wallpaper, patched a couple places and painted the bottom half of the kitchen (the top half is a slightly different color). I also moved about 35-40 boxes of dishes and books. I now have floor space in the old house to keep packing.
Tonight I watched THE CONSTANT GARDENER.  It was ok, but I saw CAPOTE last night and liked it much better.

I would love to see MRS HENDERSON PRESENTS, it just isn't anywhere around here.

Good evening!

spoiler  (in case someone Tivoed the game and won't watch until later tonight or tomorrow)- - - -

I actually stayed for the first half of the Super Bowl. Not that I watched that much of it, but the hosts did have a high definition TV, so we saw it optimally. The Sprint commercial was very funny. Otherwise, the first half was kind of a bore even with the Steelers' controversial touchdown.

Saw the final score after I finished watching the shows I wanted to watch when I got home, and I'm so sorry for the Seahawks fans here on the board. When the Panthers lost in their first Super Bowl appearance two years ago, I'm sure their fans felt the same way you do tonight. Be proud that your team was the NFC champions. No other team this year has that honor.

On the way to and from the Super Bowl party, I listened to FORBIDDEN BROADWAY: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT. I had had the CD for many months but just now got around to it.

The WICKED parody was hysterical, and I liked the Jerry Orbach impersonator (haven't read the liner notes; will do that in bed tonight).

Overall, the lyrics were pretty clever, but I don't think the impersonations as a whole were as inspired or as spot on as on other discs in the series (where the Gwen Verdon, Liza, and others were astonishing).

Congratulations on ALL the writing that is getting done, MR BK.  Do the stories have a theme?

Good DOODLEBOPS vibes!

When Luana Anders came on ADAM-12, all I could think of was her yelling at Mark Damon...."Are those my stockings?   What are MY STOCKINGS doing here?  What did you say about me?"  Whew....and then her sister became Miss Indiana!

LOL, DR JRand55! Hope there will be an ADAM-12 season 2 someday! I noticed that season 2 of EMERGENCY just came out, so I would think that ADAM12 and DRAGNET'S second seasons ought to show up soon...I hope!

And I LOVED that Luana Anders episode! She just cracks me up!

Jrand:  You know, at the moment the stories are all very different, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some common thing between them at the end of the day.  I did tie one story to another in a very subtle way, if anyone is paying attention.  But, my goal was to write interesting stories but have them all be very different in tone.  There's one very silly fun story, a couple of moody ones, etc.  Oh, I guess there is one thing that runs through all of them - they all take place in LA.

The word on the matinee was a third of a house, quiet, but loved the show, with lots of chatter at intermission about which way it could go, and lots of positive buzz at the end.

I did clear the air about one thing that was bothering me, so that's good.  I'm sure I'll be back on Thursday with a notepad.

Thank heavens we didn't achieve a new all-time low.  It certainly looked that way around six o'clock.

Sounds interesting... I am hoping after some of the dust settles this week to read your Kritzerland books.

Closing night was, well, closing night.

I could tell that people were starting to get a little emotional early on, but we all pulled it together until the final curtain call.  It was a very good performance, and we had another great audience.  And, as I've said it before, it's been a great experience all around, from the first set of auditions last summer in New York City and DC to tonight's closing night party.

And the party...  Wow!  There was so much food!  When most of us made it up to the lobby after the show, there was plenty of food on the tables: sandwich platters, lasagna, pasta salad, empanadas, cakes, etc.  And then came the pizza.  And then more pizza.  And then more sandwiches.  And then more cake!  Yes, we had a big cast and crew for this show, but it really did seem like the production office had over-planned and order-ordered the food for the festivities.  I'm not complaining, but it really was sort of funny to see new trays of food and boxes of pizza coming out every ten minutes.  *However, we also had the casts of Awake & Sing and The Rainmaker join us after their respective performances and rehearsals.  Oh, and Moises Kaufmann was in attendance tonight since they were workshopping a new play of his in the Old Vat.

I took a bunch of pictures, and I'll do my best to get them posted over the next couple of days.  In the meantime...

I did have one "emotional hug", and that came when I said goodbye to our stage manager, Sue.  She truly is the best in the business.  The perfect balance between friend, confidante, mother and dictator.  ;)  And as some DRs may recall, she is also a cancer survivor and this was her first show back as a stage manager on a full-time basis.  A truly very special lady, special person.  God is keeping her on this earth for a reason.

And the drive back to Richmond was easy.  And it was sooooo nice to see the cops on the road tonight pulling over speeders.  They seemed to be out in full force - for the first part of my trip, I saw a car pulled over almost every two miles.

And a big grin came over my face when the idiot in the SUV who was pushing me, and eventually made his way around my car got pulled over by an unmarked car.  However, this "victory" was even sweeter due to the fact that I had just seen this unmarked car finishing up one previous traffic stop, and re-entering the main flow of traffic.  He even had his flashing lights on for a bit.  And was driving right next to me.  There was a reason I was making sure to drive the speed limit, and I guess the idiot driver of the SUV didn't see it.  ;)  *And in the dark, you can see the computer screens in the police cars as your drive by them... I guess some people don't pay attention.

:P

Well... It's time for me to get some sleep.  I'm hoping to head over to UofR in the morning to get a run in on their track.  And then I'll just spend the rest of the day visiting and making the rounds.  We shall where the day takes me.

Goodnight.
