Well, you've read the notes, or have you read the notes? Only your hairdresser knows for sure. And now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - of course only their hairdressers know for sure whether they're actually coming home and the hairdressers are keeping mum on the subject.

And the word of the day is: IGNOBLE!

Continuing our discussion from yesterday's late-night posts.
It's both vocal energy (mostly) and regular show energy (to a lesser extent). What's especially frustrating is when they're coming off a perfect performance like Friday's. I just don't know why it can't be repeated the next night. After Friday's show I said to Tammy, "You owned the stage, and you owned your character." And then the next night we're down to low vocal energy again, coupled with some odd first-time line readings. I asked her about it, and she said she was just reacting to Matt's readings, which were slightly different but very good. I told her that she couldn't change what she's doing because if she does it tips certain things that are about to happen. She said she understood and will put back what wasn't broken. When I queried her about the vocal energy problem she said she's only human and not a robot, which I told her was a big old actor copout. No one wants robotics, but we do want consistency and we do want energy every single night. I mean, she's been in two big Broadway musicals and she knows this stuff. But when people come to LA they get in the weird TV acting mode and I just won't have it. I told her, she doesn't have the luxury to have "off" nights, because important people are seeing the show every night.

Dakota, I did listen to Christina's album. She has a beautiful voice and I enjoyed some of it. But, as is usually the case with self-produced CDs, there's no one there to guide, to say, no, don't do that, or there's too much of this, or why don't you do that? No one understands how important the role of producer is. A lot of people take the credit, but have no clew. I take that job very seriously, which is why the solo albums I've produced are so good - the singers are at their best because I make them be their best, the song selections are interesing and good because I have musical sense and I don't let them get away with choices that just won't work. My problem with this particular CD is probably with its very nature - she wanted to do an eclectic CD. Well, that's not a point of view, that's just arbitrary. And, for me, arbitrary rarely works. I know they're songs that have meant something to her, but you'd never know that from the result because the order of the songs is peculiar, the arrangements are very cheesy occasionally, and her performances are too similar. I did enjoy Mama, A Rainbow, and the duet with Matt, but I could have lived without the two David Lawrence duets. But, that's just me - I'm very hard to please.
-
Very good points, bk. I had taken some acting classes when i was in college many years ago and that was oen thing our professor stressed. You have to maintain your vocal energies regardless for theatre is a medium where the voice is the messenger. If that message is delivered well it can pack a punch of emotion, power and conviction....
His favorite pastime in class was to walk around and punch us in the stomach to achieve that projection.

My favorite track is the one she did with Matt... they also performed that on Soap Talk and I have that clip. They also sang together one other time to a piece from The King and I, "I have loved".
I would love to see her do a professional produced one.

WOW, impressive!!
I am suspecting you played at the Chester Fritz Auditorium in Grand Forks at UND.
I like that show, always have.
-
Jose, it looked like you might have been using the "Insert Image" button instead of the "Insert Hyperlink" button. Try that and it should work.
-
DR JOse, you will have to give me the heads up if you are touring again....
-
Oops... Just realized we also did not drive through Arizona and Nevada.
So, all but the seven of the continental United States....
;)
-Still, that's a lot of States to cover in that amount time!

<nod>
And, again, it was a miracle was all got along so well.
Our producer and company manager also made sure that whenever we had a "Golden Day" or two - no show, no travel - that we stopped in a major city. We ended up with three days in New Orleans - that was amazing! - two days in Nashville, and a couple of nights in New York City.

Yes it is...You were at the Chester Fritz Auditorium...
-
OH! And since we're on a soap opera tangent...
This was the third leg of the tour. The first two went out with Gloria Loring at Reno Sweeney. -Consequently, that's when the tour played California, Nevada, Arizona, Florida, etc... a.k.a. - "The Nice States".

And the word of the day is: IGNOBLE!
Speaking of...has anyone heard of the IgŪ Nobel Prizes (http://www.improb.com/ig/)?
The Ig Nobel Prizes honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think. The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative -- and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology.
They even have a couple of books! Volume 1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0452285739/qid=1140338022/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-4779504-7364131?s=books&v=glance&n=283155) (the link is for the paperback edition...other editions are available) and Volume 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0525949127/qid=1140338022/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4779504-7364131?s=books&v=glance&n=283155):

I "drew" up that map with Microsoft's "Maps & Streets" (?) program just to get an idea of when, where, and how long I would be travelling. Our actual bus mileage was much longer due to various detours along the way. -We stopped in Roswell, NM twice!
:)

Well, I know where they are... Alas, they're "real pics", not digital prints, so I'd have to scan them to post here.. Ah, well... Some day...

DR DakotaCelt - Is the Chester Fritz that auditorium with all the pics of the artists who have played there in the lobby? If I'm remembering correctly, it's quite an impressive display - and theatre.
-Although, I do remember that our dressing rooms were some of the classrooms in the building... I think.
???
-
Okay, I'm tired. <yawn> I'm going to bed. In the morning, I'm meeting a co-worker at work and we're going to Costco (it's only a couple of miles from where I work) and I need to get up early...well, earlier than I ever get up on a Sunday...and I must compose myself...so composed for a Sunday. ;) (sort of Sondheim references)

Goodnight all!

But first... Page Two!

You are correct in your description. They are pictures of different performers and theater companies that have visited. I am sure your show poster is now on the wall also.. :)
THey building also has some rehearsal rooms and sound rooms.

A few years back, the Guthrie and Ordway did a joint project of taking a company of Midsummers Nights Dream on tour through the Plains. It was part of a grant they got through JFK theatre in DC to take the Arts to the rural areas.
That was the first time I had seen a professional prodcution of Shakespeare and it was incredible.

Good morning, all! I had a marathon day yesterday with Season 1 of SLINGS AND ARROW, which the Sundance Channel showed back to back yesterday. Tonight, the second series begins. It's quite wonderful, and I wonder how much of the backstage intrigue at the Shakespeare Festival is based on the Ontario Festival. The cast is excellent and the writing very good.
I have a movie with goddaughter Charlotte today, depending on whether or not her dance class is cancelled. She wanted THE PINK PANTHER, which I nixed, so we'll most likely see DATE MOVIE and hopefully laugh. I'll also give her her belated birthday gift tonight.
I'll be heading out shortly to the recording office; when I return, I have a few forms to fill out for a meeting tomorrow at 2:00. Then, back to the Men's Chorus charts.
-
Whew! Caught up at last.
Read all about MR BK's nearly flat tire - DR RLP's new toy - DR RODZINSKI's anniversary and trip to LI - saw tulips and daisies - read about DR CILLALIZ's new kitchen AND her brief flirtation with a handsome actor - whew!!!
DR CILLA LIZ - if they have one in your area - the Tuesday Morning Stores have great bargains on home furnishing accessories and sometimes have beautiful area rugs at great prices!
The best things are the non-advertised clearance items!
-
We are having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave...it is up to 4 degrees.
I am off to work.
Have fun visiting with DR CP today, MR BK - I am sure he will enjoy the play.
-
Good morning!
Gorgeously sunny day here, but that sun isn't translating into warm temperatures. We'll be lucky to get to 40 today. Brrrrr!!!!
A good day to get laundry done and other inside chores. But it's pretty to look outside the window and see that azure sky.
-
Thank goodness to get off that widescreen page! Ugh!
-
Well here I am with almost nothing to say. Which mean I have something to say which is about nothing.
Actually I am surprised that I have time to write something even though it is about nothing. But since I am writing about something I might as well just say that I have been busy busy busy.
I have been going to work early and staying late and that makes me tired by the end of the day.
My mother has been visiting and see is still recuperating from her knew operations and the installation of her pacemaker.
I have join tostmasters international and my concert series has started for the season. Weekends have been occupied with the Renessaince Festival and catching up on films Walk the Line and Brokeback Mountain (which I was not crazy about). Been working on a play and what other little time I have is me time
So I guess I did have something to say
-
Looking forward to THE MIRROR CRACK'D FROM SIDE TO SIDE on DVD today. Then, I think I might put in Barbara Cook on the Bell Telephone Hour. Was talking with a friend about it yesterday, and decided that time is ripe to watch it. (I got it for Christmas, and I can't believe it's taken me this long to watch it.)
-
Nice to hear from you, DR Michael. Glad you're busy and enjoying it. Sounds like you are!
-
Has anyone here read SON OF A WITCH, the sequel to WICKED? Thinking about buying that today.
-
And no one answered my GOLDEN BOY question yesterday. No Charles Strouse fans out there?
-
Well, I'm going to hop over to the Amazon site now and see about SON OF A WITCH and some other books.
WBBL.
-
Hmmm.... gone for 45 minutes and no one posted?
Now, I'm off to get lunch prepped and some DVDs watched.
WBBL
-
Restate the Golden Boy question and I'll answer it.
-
...She wanted THE PINK PANTHER, which I nixed...
Good call.
-
Last night's French Onion Soup...well, I was a bit disappointed. The mix of chicken and beef broth was OK, but the sweet onions instead of the yellows...believe it or don't, the sweets didn't caramelize properly. I think they had too much water in them.
I've still got red and white onions to try, as other variants.
-
Good call.
Thank you! I'm sure DATE MOVIE will be offensive, gross, and totally dumb. We'll probably laugh ourselves silly, but I won't spend the film telling Charlotte what a genius Peter Sellers was.
Poor Steve Martin! I loved ROXANE and PARENTHOOD. Now he's doing things like PP, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 1&2, which bear as much relation to the Galbraith family books as I do! What's run off with his taste? Is it time for a new agent?
-
Good Afternoon!
And speaking of "Date Movie"...
While walking around Times Square Wednesday afternoon, I noticed a crowd had gather on the sidewalk outside the Marriott Marquis. Turns out it was a promo for "Date Movie" - they were giving free chair massages. There was even a bit of a "bait and switch" involved. They had some very pretty and nubile young women in "Date Movie" t-shirt handing out flyers, but the actual massages were being given by women from a Chinese massage parlor.
;)
-Oh, and they were also giving out small boxes of Kleenex - like the ons featured in the movie's ads... "Everyone wantsa happy ending."
:P
-
And now...
Page Three!!!

DR Jose, where are you now? Still in Manhattan?
Did you find the OPERA NEWS interview with Mr Panaro?
All right. I have work! Toodles.

Ignoble Eggleston was Belle Poitrine's sleezy brother-in-law.

All right. I have work! Toodles.
I'm currently in Fairfax, VA. Drove down last night. I'll be back Tuesday. In the meantime, I may be making an excursion down to Richmond.
I still have yet to find and Opera News. I'm going by a Border's later today, so...
Have fun at work and the movies. Toodles to you too.

What Steve Martin needs to do is stop associating with Eugene Levy. Levy has appeared with Martin in both Father of the Bride films, Cheaper By the Dozen 2, and Bringing Down the House.
And he's got to stop making films just for the money. The original Cheaper netted him over ten million - a definite contradiction of the title.
The good news is that a film version of Picasso at the Lapin Agile is in the works.
-
Restate the Golden Boy question and I'll answer it.
Matt asked:
A GOLDEN BOY question:
"I never got the original Sammy Davis Jr. version with his strained vocals. My LP (and of course the CD) contains his redone recordings on four numbers.
Is his voice really raw and unlistenable on the original cuts? I can hear some of the raspiness in some group numbers that are still on the released CD version (and on the LP I still have), but were his solos really THAT bad or did the rawness give some depth to his character rather than being that of a crooner trying to play a serious role?"
-
Good morning (yes, it's still morning in California).
Slept extremely well, even though it dipped into the low 30s overnight (and is supposed to get into the upper 20s tonight).
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
It hasn't been this cold here since I've lived here (12-plus years).
The mattress warmer is h-e-a-v-e-n!

Am having a modicum of fun with my new toy.
It amazes me that every time I buy a piece of audio-visual or audio equipment, the folks who write the instructions simply do not take into account that the new piece of equipment is being added to a larger component system.
These instructions presume I'm replacing a VHS recorder/player. Nothing more is involved so far as the instructions are concerned.
The new toy is connected directly into the TV, whereas the VHS recorder it replaced was not...it was linked solely by a video cable and the VHS was linked into my receiver. The new toy doesn't want to be linked into my receiver (and refuses to operate if I try it).
Sigh. Experimentation resumes later today.

Not completely sure what Costco is?? WE do not have them up here....
Costco (http://www.costco.com/) is a membership (http://www.costco.com/Common/Category.aspx?cat=503&eCat=BC|502|503) store that has very low prices on a lot of brand new (only) products. They have their own product line (Kirkland brand) and if you have the room for storage, it's quite the bargain. The only place I buy blank VHS tapes, CD-Rs and DVD-Rs is Costco. The last time I bought DVD-Rs, they had a coupon (they only take their own coupons) for a free spindle of 100 DVD-Rs if you buy a spindle of 100 DVD-Rs for $22.95! I also get things like paper towels (12-roll packages), toilet paper (36-roll packages), and I even bought my car (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=11067843&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=) through their program and paid only $100 over the invoice price! No haggling! I only live about two miles away, so I tend to go there quite often. ;)
-
PS. I have no stock in Costco...just a satisfied customer. ;D

That is cheap. The cheapest place round here is Target. I refuse to shop Walmart. Especially after one time when a sales clerk there grabbed my face and said read my lips. I was very, very offended. I told the manager and he laughed.
That was two years ago and I have not stepped ONE foot in Walmart since. I figure if that is how they treat people with hearing loss, I refuse to do business with them.
I need to get vid tapes and some cd's

Sunday afternoon greetings! I slept late (after 9am) again this morning and have been reading the Sunday papers slowly. Also watched a DVD - Big Eden.
DH Richard will be home soon from his second day of shape-note singing. We'll have a short visit, then I'm going out to spend the night at my mother's. She has an early morning appointment tomorrow for some tests at the hospital and staying overnight with her will save me a little driving in the morning. Mom and I will have a PJ party tonight and watch the Olympics together.

I don't know if there are other Mozart fans on the site beyond myself, but I had meant earlier to put in a good word for Jane Glover's new book for the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, MOZART'S WOMEN. It's a wonderful read about the women around him, mother, sister, notorious cousin, wife Constanze and her family, mother, father, talented sisters Aloysia, Josepha and Sophie - I had no idea until this week that the great Carl Maria von Weber was part of the same family - and several other interesting women, such as Nancy Storace, the original Susanna of LE NOZZE DI FIGARO.
It's quite a different picture of Salieri and Leopold from that of the film and play AMADEUS, and I'm enjoying it so much I'm listening to a lot of Mr Mozart, which is, incidentally, what Dustin Hoffman used to call me in the mid-1980s.
-
I just "declared my independence" somewhat from my job. No, I didn't quit, but I did change the homepage on my home computer browser from that of the library where I work to that of the New York Times.

Not Mrs Robinson? Guess he'd grown out of that.
-
DR Ginny, have a lovely evening with your mum...
Thank you, DR DakotaCelt! She moved here several years ago to a nearby retirement community after living in Phoenix for about 15 years. We like to do "girl stuff" together once in a while, sometimes just the 2 of us (like tonight) and sometimes with her sister, my sister, and my sister's daughter. It's a real trip when all five of us are together - we have one each in her 80's, 70's, 60's, 50's, and 40's.
-
Sammy's vocals on the original original LP are indeed very hoarse - not totally terrible, but none of the power he normally has. The redos are all for the better. When I reissued the album on Bay Cities we asked if we could include the originals but I think the tapes are lost or destroyed. I find it amazing that Golden Boy is having it's third incarnation on CD - first me, then Angel, now DRG. One would think it would have sold what it would have sold, especially the Angel reissue.
-
I shall now be on my way to the theater for the matinee performance. Pray for Rosemary's Baby.
After the show, I shall be supping with Pogue and his pal, Larry Drake.
-
Not Mrs Robinson? Guess he'd grown out of that.
Thank you, Jesus!
-
Pray for Rosemary's Baby.
Can't we pray for somebody else's baby by now???? ;)
-
Good Afternoon!
I want chocolate.
-That is all for now.

Catching up on the posts from late last night, I was sorry to have missed the US geography discussion. North Dakota is one of the 9 states I've never visited. While our son (now 20) was growing up we took 3 long driving trips, 2 west and 1 east. On our first trip west, in 1996, we especially enjoyed the drive west across South Dakota. Upon entering the state just north of Sioux City, IA, we stopped a welcome center and paid $15 for cassettes that described the drive along I-90. We spent a couple of nights in the Badlands/Mt. Rushmore area and just before crossing into Wyoming, turned in the tapes and got our money back. I always thought that was a great tourism idea.
-
Actually...
I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped on the scale this morning. I was expecting that I had put back on a pound or two - or three... or even four - since I had been back in NYC... And not really watching my diet that closely... And not running or exercising regularly... Well...
Over the past two weeks, I've lost two pounds since I last weighed in, and my body fat percentage dropped two more points too! -The body fat percentage was a very welcome surprise since it means I actually lost some more fat - and more than just two pounds of it!
I guess all the walking I normally do in NYC has been good for me. -And I had just figured my jeans were fitting "looser" since I had stretched them out through regular wear.
:)
-
And speaking of jeans.... I have some laundry to do...

I asked about Sammy Davis' original song tracks for GOLDEN BOY: if they were as bad as descriptions I've read have said. One write-up said the raspiness and lack of pure tone added to his character, made him seem scrappier and less polished. Another said the distress in his voice made listening to the solo tracks (and one with Paula Wayne) unlistenable and that he was right to re-record them and for Capitol to re-release the album with the new tracks in place of the old ones.
Also wondered why Davis' original tracks weren't added to the various CD issues of GOLDEN BOY as bonus tracks. I've never heard these original tracks and would like to hear just how bad Davis' voice was and if it did indeed add depth to the character he was playing.
-
Thanks for the GOLDEN BOY answer, BK.
One of these days I'd like to hear those hoarse vocals, just for my own curiosity.
-
Page Four Stepmother Dance!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed THE MIRROR CRACK'D FROM SIDE TO SIDE. Besides the always wonderful work from Joan Hickson, Gwen Watford was back as Dolly Bantry (she played a major part in THE BODY IN THE LIBRARY, too), and her scattiness is always entertaining.
-
Watched a couple more CSI episodes including one set in a mental hospital for the criminally insane; a most creepy episode.
Another featured Marg Helgenburger's real-life husband Alan Rosenberg as a sleazy suspect. Alan, of course, is now president of the Screen Actors Guild.
-
Finished up my afternoon viewing with a program in INHD2 called ENOUNTER IN THE THIRD DIMENSION.
In the program guide, it was described as a history of 3-D filmmaking, but it actually seemed more like a theme part ride with terrific surround sound and lots of computer animation simulating 3-D. Not what I bargained for, but I did watch the whole thing just to make sure I wouldn't waste my time with it again if the cable channel loops it in an upcoming round of plays.
-
There is a new DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES tonight (and GREY'A ANATOMY, I suppose), and COLD CASE is a rerun but I doubt I've seen it since I've missed so many this season due to overlapping sports programs that have run long.
-
DR Ron, if you continue to have problems with your set-up for the new video equipment, let us help. We'd only be glad to try to offer suggestions.
-
Good Afternoon!
Well... No chocolate in the house right now, so I put a pizza in the oven.
:)
-Oh, there is a box of truffles sitting on the counter. Unopened. It's part of Hershey's Pot of Gold line. I actually like the Pot of Gold chocolates, however, the truffles are my least favorite part of line, imho.
-
And just to make I'm getting my vegetables, I put some chopped, frozen spinach on top of the four-cheese pie before putting it in the oven.
-
Time to get der Brucer moving...he's been watching movies on the telly, but if I don't make sure he's got a copy of the Washington Post soon, he's going to start whining.
Roast leg of lamb tonight, with lots of garlic and rosemary, roasted carrots and taters, and I think maybe a gremolata to add a little more flavor at the table.
-
That is cheap.
DakotaCelt, that is appalling, I can't believe you were treated with such disrespect! That sounds like a story for the local news if I ever heard one.
-
DR SWW - Have you ever made the Greek Lemon Roasted Potatoes? My favorite accompaniment with leg of lamb. -But a really good rice pilaf is good too... as is yanni, the Greek-style green beans. -Not the Greek-style, long-haired keyboard artiste.
;)
-
Or you could place some orzo in the bottom of the roasting pan, and let it cook up in the pan juices. YUMMY!
-
Ben, please let Anthony know that he inspired us. I have had some pictures lying around the house, some of them for years that I have been waiting to go get framed. Since we had the opportunity to make a trip to Ikea yesterday, I purchased some frames and have been framing them myself.
-

I think I would rather have the long-haired keyboard artiste.
-
Well, here is Martha Stewart's recipe. I really do love these potatoes. When done correctly, the potatoes develop a "shell", and then the insides just melt away once you break into them. And all that lemon and oregano. You can roast these in the oven at the same you do the lamb. Or if you have a big enough oven and roasting pan, you can do them at the same time.
Greek Lemon Roasted Potatoes
Serves 8
Oregano is Greek for "joy of the mountain." Greek oregano has a more mild flavor than the Mexican variety usually found in the spice aisle of your supermarket. Look for Greek oregano at Italian or Greek markets.
4 russet baking potatoes(8 medium), peeled and quartered
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice(3 lemons)
1 tablespoon dried oregano, preferably Greek oregano, plus more for garnish
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1. Heat oven to 500°. Place potatoes in a metal roasting pan large enough to fit potatoes in a single layer. Add 1 cup water, olive oil, lemon juice, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Toss potatoes until well coated.
2. Bake, uncovered, until fork-tender and brown on the edges, about 50 minutes. Turn potatoes halfway through for even browning; add water if all the liquid has been absorbed, before they have fully browned. If desired, garnish with oregano; serve.
[/size]
So simple, and sooo good.
-
I think I would rather have the long-haired keyboard artiste.
Well, you know what they say about a guy with a big keyboard...
;D
-
And I have to say the pizza came out better than expected. In addition to the frozen, chopped spinach, I also drizzled some olive oil and minced garlic on the pizza. Soooo good. Very satisfying.
-Sheesh, I'm becoming "semi-homemade"... AAAGGGHH!!!
::)
Well... Now to find some chocolate.
:)
-
I'm looking forward to viewing Miss Barbara Cook on the Bell Telephone Hour later this evening.
-
But first, must go get the hall bath cleaned, not one of my favorite chores.

I'm gonna make DR elmore proud of me! Not that he needs to be!!
DR Francois, friend of friends, mensch of mensches, kindest of the kind, gentleman of gentlemen, I'm always proud of you!

Dream on, Alice! I got my own Wonderland.

Is that true of all keyboards, or just the organ?

I have been online looking for recipes so that I can recreate the deep fried macaroni and cheese balls we had as an appetizer at the cheesecake factory yesterday. The secret is to freeze them before dropping them in the oil so that they don't break into pieces.
Soooo good!!

It helps if you only buy male macaroni and cheese.
I have no idea what that means!

Of all the film spoofs, from AIRPLANES on, DATE MOVIE is the nadir; it's very very very gross, and the jokes are of the writing school that says throw out a constant barrage of sick jokes and maybe one will get a laugh. Well, I did laugh at parodies of these films, among others:
MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING
MEET THE PARENTS
MEET THE FOKKERS
THE WEDDING PLANNER
THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY
SHALLOW HAL
SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
BRIDGET JONES' DIARY
MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING
THE WEDDING CRASHERS
THE BIRDCAGE
There are also digs at Britney and Kevin, Ben Affleck and everyone, Michael Jackson and boys, STAR WARS 3, LORD OF THE RINGS, and anything else they could throw into the mix. Did I laugh? Yes. Was I grossed out? Yes. Best bit: Jennifer Coolidge as Barbra Streisand.

DR TPunk - I remember walking by a small deli in Richmond and doing a double-take when I saw that on their "deep fried" menu they included mac'n'cheese. Hmmm...
And then I happened to catch an old episode of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" this past week, and came across this:
Next Day Mac and Cheese "Toast"
Recipe courtesy Alton Brown

And it really looked Good Eats on the show.
-Now I'm wondering if those deep-fried broccoli and cheese balls will make a comeback.
;D
-
And I wish I could still find those "pasts chips" that came out a few years ago and just sort of disappeared. It was simply deep-fried pieces of pasta - usually bow-ties or wheels - that were seasoned with parmesan and garlic. Sooo good. Safeway used to carry it in their bulk section.
-Of course, they're actually very easy to make at home. And a very good way to use up leftover pasta.

Lemon roasted taters - no, that's a new one for me. I'm just doing a simple roast this time.
But I've made a gremolata to serve with dinner.
-
Don't look at me like that, DR JosePiano!!
I know you don't care for Axe!! LOL!
Well.. Actually, I don't care that much for Ben Affleck as much as I used to. I was looking at him.
;)

Well... Next time.
Even though it is basically a simple recipe, you'll find some very lengthy instructions in books - and on the web - for the proper cooking technique. Alas, the proper cooking technique is basically to leave them alone as much as possible while roasting. Very simple.
And then there are those potatoes that are traditionally served with Chicken Vesuvio. Very similar, and almost iconic in some culinary circles.

Hmmm, there is one that just opened. I had no idea what it was, I just saw "Tuesday Morning" on the outside of the building. I did find a rug today at Lowe's. I'll post a photo when I get caught up on the posts

Oh, yes! Tuesday Morning. The selection can be hit and miss at times, but if you get there early enough you can find some great items. They will close for restocking every couple of weeks, so each time you go back you can browse through different things.
I believe Ms. Lauren Bacall does TV commercials for them.

You're welcome, DR Cillaliz.
*The Greek place I used to go to in Richmond would make them on the weekends. Sometimes, I would just make a lunch from them and some green beans. Simple and good.
-
DR Dakotacelt - regarding the discussion yesterday, the Sioux are in South Dakota. They are called the Lakota Sioux. They actually came close to shooting Lewis and Clark near Yankton on their way up the Missouri. They were once throughout this area hence Sioux City, Sioux Falls etc. they call this area Siouxland. I read somewhere they are talking about not doing that anymore, but I've never heard anyone say they are offended by it.
I grew up in an area where a large number of white settlers were massacred by Inkpaduta and a band of his followers. He was a Lakota Sioux as well. I learned it as he was just a renegade. Now they are teaching the whole story of how he was treated and his brother or another relative killed shortly before the settlers were killed. Anyway, they call it the Spirit Lake Massacre. Just thought I'd point that out

We have a Greek Orthodox Church in Sioux City that has the most wonderful dinners several times a year. The lines are huge and they have a bakery set up. All the food made by the congregation. They put out a great cook book last year, it's in a box somewhere, hope to find it sometime soon.

I had heard bits and pieces. The Dakota Sioux up here prefer being called Dakota...
It was after 1862 revolt in Minnesota and they pushed out of the Minnesota River Valley into the Red River Valley.
University of North Dakota has been embroiled in a nickname debate for years.. It quite the controversy up here.
BTW, DR Cilla, my grandmother is originally from Bridgwater, IA

I love me some Greek Food Festival Food. The Greek Orthodox church in Richmond, VA, has a wonderful annual festival. Huge turnout of people for all the goodies. And the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Falls Church, VA, also has a nice festival. And then there's St. Catherine's in DC... and... and...

I have been through Fargo. After my first year in law school, my parents, my aunt and I drove to Alaska. The way out was via the Black Hills, Yellowstone, the Canadian Rockies, then to Prince Rupert and the ferry. My Aunt flew back, my parents and I took a cruise and then drove back straight across Canada through Edmonton and Saskatoon then down through North Dakota, South Dakota and home.

Yes. Although, the "game" I like watching the most is "Let's try to walk a straight line after drinking a couple of bottles of retsina and having a couple of shots of ouzo."

SLINGS AND ARROWS had a wonderful beginning to its new series by tying up the ends from last season. It is such a neat show, and it's nice to learn once again that pretentious twits who think they're actors exist in the professional world as well as other spheres. After that, BLEAK HOUSE started rolling toward its denouement, and I forget if there are one or two more episodes to wrap up this epic.
It's been Mozart, Dickens, and a Shakespeare Festival today. Thank God I had DATE MOVIE to bring me down to the level of American pop culture these days.

The problem with these so-called spoof films of today is that they are like a sketch comedy TV show, sometimes not as funny. They all hope to invoke Airplane, but they don't actually learn anything from Airplane - Airplane was spoofing a genre, a specific genre, and while there are outrageous and outlandish gags every minute, they are always true to the genre they're spoofing, and at the film's core are two characters you actually like and care about. That is the difference.
-
Show was decent today, although I am once again going to have to talk to the third actor strongly - he's now playing an entirely different play than everyone else, and the sad part of it is he has no clew, no clew at all. We had about a half-house, which is very good for a Sunday.
Dinner with Pogue and Larry Drake was great, and we laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we laughed again.

I am catching up on the weekend Bollywood movies...just finished watching SHAIR (1949)...starring Dev Anand, Suraiy, and Kamini Kaushal....home town girl falls in love with poet..poet falls in love with pretty radio singer...the 3 of them duke it out...the ending was certainly not what I expected.

Don't have to work tomorrow. Yeah!
Long Playing Record cover of the day:
So you like rare soundtracks? I present the Soundtrack to the film ESSENTIAL OILS OF THE FAR EAST. This is the background music for a a 50-minute industrial film made by a company called Fritsche-D&O. According to the brochures I found inside the sleeve, the film was available without charge to educational institutions, industrial, civic and religious organizations for group presentation. The record is "A first edition, limited to one thousand copies." I think I found it in California.
The music itself is two enjoyable sidelong suites of pseudo eastern music with some neat recurring motifs. No credits for who wrote or performed it or why they made an album of it...

DR Jose, I'm not completely sure, but I think that there is some form of pasta chips in Target's line of snack foods.

I watched a bit of PRESUMED INNOCENT on one of the HBO channels which reminded me I need to take out the DVD of that movie and watch it again. Always liked it, though it's one of the few really quality mysteries in which I guessed the identity of the murderer before it was revealed.
-
I notiuced that a Poirot full length mystery - based on CARDS ON THE TABLE - has been filmed and was showing on the Biography Channel tonight. I've got the DVR set to catch its rebroadcast at 3 a.m.
I always thought it was one of Dame Agatha's cleverest mysteries since there were only four suspects, but I find it surprising they chose this one to film. I can't think of another of her Poirot books that's less cinematic.
-
Put in the Bell Telephone Hour/Barbara Cook DVD. How glorious to see Barbara at this stage of her career, the way I remember her from seeing SHE LOVES ME and SHOW BOAT in NYC. I got the MUSIC MAN, CIVIL WAR, and VIENNA segments watched before network TV began (and also saw part of the 1962 Broadway season tribute with Robert Goulet). Will complete it tomorrow.
It was really a treat to see.
-
COLD CASE had a very, very sad episode tonight. Such a poignant story of mother love.
-
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES
spoiler - - - -
I found the Bree storyline very hard to endure. Alcoholism isn't funny to me under any circumstances, and though there was seriousness underlying tonight's story with her, even the few "funny" moments (the sprinklers) weren't funny to me.
No Applewhites at all this week!
For a change, I liked the Susan storyline. But much of that is lusting after RIchard Burgi!
Gabby's story held my attention. So now, who are we really to believe - Gabby's version of the events or her mother's? I think the episode was tipping us toward Gabby's story, but maybe that's just my own inclination.
-
DR Jose, I'm not completely sure, but I think that there is some form of pasta chips in Target's line of snack foods.
Oohh... And since I have to make a trip to Target tomorrow... Ooohhhh...
*Although, I think I've tried their mix before. It's good, but it's a mix - has pretzels, nuts, etc., along with the pasta. I just want the pasta.
Mmm.... Target does have a website.... Hmm...

POSSIBLE OLYMPICS SPOILER>>>>
WOW!
For anyone who wants to see some "looks that kill", just watch the Ice Dancing competition tonight. WOW!
-Or if you are watching now, you just saw it.
-
I watched David Starkey's last episode of THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII, the Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr episode. I had seen Catharine of Aragon and Anne Bolyn some months back, so I just have the middle segment to find and I will have seen the entire series.
As history, they're just fine, but I much prefer the dramatic plays the BBC did in the 1970s with Keith Michell.
-
I still have CABIN IN THE SKY to finish at some point tomorrow.

I've also promised to dub some shows onto DVD for some folks, so will be busy with that for much of the day tomorrow.
I think my usual Monday lunch companions are off tomorrow and will be with their own significent others, so I'll undoubtedly be preparing my own lunch again tomorrow.
-
Oh, my gosh--is anyone watching the dance skating tonight? How bizarre!
-
Of course, tomorrow is another Monday postal holiday, and wouldn't you know that I have several parcels on their way to me that will be delayed due to no mail delivery. Darn!
-
Try relaxing and putting your hand in a warm bowl of water.
I believe Glenn Gould used to do that before going on stage.
;)
*Actually, it was ice water with him.
-
Oh, my gosh--is anyone watching the dance skating tonight? How bizarre!
Yes- See above.
:o
-
I have a headache and I want to watch a movie, but can't decide what movie to watch. That is all.
-
Looks that kill in skating - Katarina Witt used to do that at every competition. Would stand on the edge of the rink and watch every competitor skate in order to psych them out. Sometimes it worked, but I loved it in 1987 when she stood there with her heart sinking while Debi Thomas skated a perfect program to win the world championship that Katarina had held for the past three years.

Just popping in to say hey, long time no read... I'm playing a little catch-up, but I haven't had much of an opportunity to do recreational internet lately. At any rate, hi everyone!
Jose, congrats on your weight loss success! Your pic looks great, just from your face you can tell you're making progress!
I miss you all... not much news, except that I'm obsessed with the Olympics. Hopefully I'll be back soon!
:-* :-* :-* :-*

Hiya, DR Joy!

Nice to meet ya Joy!!
VERY, VERY dead tonight at the library...
Getting a lot of things done though....
-
DR SWW - Have you ever made the Greek Lemon Roasted Potatoes? My favorite accompaniment with leg of lamb. -But a really good rice pilaf is good too... as is yanni, the Greek-style green beans. -Not the Greek-style, long-haired keyboard artiste.
;)
YUM
Recipes, please? :D
-
Hey, DR Joy, long time, no see!
-
Whoops, never mind ;) ... there it is!
-
Darn!
No real listing of Target's house brand, Archer Farms, on their website, however, I did manage to Google this site:
http://www.taquitos.net/snacks.php?manuf_code=305 (http://www.taquitos.net/snacks.php?manuf_code=305)
It seems there is an "Italian Potato Chip", but that's just a potato chip with Italian seasoning. But they also list a Thai style chip... Hmm... Guess I'll have to check the shelves.
*Oh, and looking at the list has made me miss those Ming Tsai, Blue Ginger cookies. There were two varieties: a five spice shortbread, and a chocolate-chocolate chip ginger cookie. Both were very good.
-
Whoops, never mind ;) ... there it is!
Where are you now nowadays, DR Joy?
-
Yes- See above.
:o
sort of spoiler....
I loved the dirty look. She obviously blamed him.
-
Lately, I've been enamoured of Utz's Dark Kettle Potato Chips. Crunchy with a robust flavor.
-
Haven't firmly decided on any DVDs for tomorrow. I do have those DVD-Rs to burn for others, but if I have time, I guess I might try to finish up the CSI boxed set for Season 5. There is one disc left in the box.
-
sort of spoiler....
I loved the dirty look. She obviously blamed him.
Not really a spoiler. You didn't name any competitor. It could have been any of the teams.
-
The local foods market makes their own potato chips. They are a little greasy, but boy are they good. Hot from the frying pan
-

Sort of spoiler...
Two pairs of ice skates: $500
Two custom-made ice dancing costumes: $400
Apologizing to your partner in front of millions of people watching around the world... Priceless.
-There truly are things money can't buy.
*At least they didn't mouth anything. The other night, I could have sworn I saw an athlete mouth the F-word, among other obscenities.
;D
-
Oh look, I'm in the count down to 2000, ok it's a long countdown, but I'm on my way
-
Where are you now nowadays, DR Joy?
I am sitting on my couch in my apartment that I share with my darling husband (absentee DR Noel) in Manhattan, in New York City, in the Great State of New York (a.k.a. the Empire State), in the United States of America, planet Earth, Milky Way Galaxy, somewhere in the universe. ;D
And I'm looking for a job -- got close to a job at Binder, but no cigar. Oh well, hopefully I'm still on the "will call" list. I had a job at a management company for awhile, but it didn't work out and I said goodbye after a week and a half. So if anyone knows anyone who needs a casting assistant... I'm available!
I should post the map of our route on the My Fair Lady tour. It will cross your eyes and make your hair stand on end. :o
-
Not that long; you'll get there before you know it! :)
-
*At least they didn't mouth anything. The other night, I could have sworn I saw an athlete mouth the F-word, among other obscenities.
;D
If I worked that hard, got that far and then had something stupid happen to end it all, I'd be more than mouthing obscenities, I'd be saying them out loud!!
-
Lately, I've been enamoured of Utz's Dark Kettle Potato Chips. Crunchy with a robust flavor.
Those are good. And Utz has rolled out a new line of "natural chips" which are pretty good too. However, my favorite will always be the Grandma Utz Potato Chips. Love that crunch. And the BBQ variety is pretty good too. -But I also like Utz's Crab Chip and Salt & Pepper ones too.
-
Not really a spoiler. You didn't name any competitor. It could have been any of the teams.
Seriously. I was gonna ask "Which one?" LOL There must be an oil spill on the ice!
-
Hi Joy!
-
...And whenever I would buy a sub at Subway, I would inevitably end up putting some of those Grandma Utz Chips on my sandwich for some extra crunch.
:)
-
Dark Kettle chips....dark....oh my, I forgot I have a dark chocolate bar in my purse....I mustn't let it be all alone in the dark
-
*At least they didn't mouth anything. The other night, I could have sworn I saw an athlete mouth the F-word, among other obscenities.
;D
Totally! And then there was the reaction shot of Lindsey Jacobellis' mom, who was clearly screaming "GET UP GET UP GET UP" just like me and DR Noel. Sheesh.
-
These are the chips in question:

With a lot of internationally understood gestures, to boot!

LOL, that sounds like work. So is it your testimony that the chips in question located on the table where the victim choked on the sandwich?
bad example but you get the idea
-
Underpants!
Sandra! Now THAT'S my kind of post! Kritzerheads will know why.
-

There is a local brand of chips here in PA, Herr's, that produces a Kettle line that includes a Salt and Vinegar variety. They are incredibly tasty, but leave my lips and tongue feeling like I had been sucking on a bar of lye soap.

So you know what it feels like to suck on a bar of lye soap?
-
I've certainly seen obscenities come out of people's mouths in others sports, but not with skating.
-

If the chip don't fit, you must acquit!
-
Those of us on diets (meaning me) are suffering by reading about delicious chips.
-

Herr's also makes it down to Virginia too.
Hmm... Just checking out Utz's site, and they don't list the Dark Kettle ones their. But I seem them all the time in the stores, so...
And I usually get that "lye feeling" after eating Dill Pickle chips.
*And I have to admit that I did give the Utz Ketchup chips a try... Once was enough for those.
-
So you know what it feels like to suck on a bar of lye soap?
Oh, the experiences I've had...
-
Got to the end of the Judi Dench A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. She's fine and Laurence Guittard playing Frederick is marvelous.
But that dreadful actor playing Hendric! Oy! how awful!
-
LOL, that sounds like work. So is it your testimony that the chips in question located on the table where the victim choked on the sandwich?

I object!
-
Will council please approach the bench.
crunch, crunch, crunch... hmm... Yum... crunch, crunch... crunch... Got any dip?... crunch, crunch...
-
Excuse me, your honor, could you pass the diet cherry coke?
-
Well kids, I think I'm going to go get some sleep. No work tomorrow, but the plumber is coming to fix all the things his son in law messed up or forgot to fix. So I need to be up bright and early to let him in... night
-
You're leading the witness, Councillor.
...And consuming the evidence.
-
So you know what it feels like to suck on a bar of lye soap?
Cilla, they have lutefisk up here that is soaked in Lye.... I wont touch the stuff...
BTW, have any of you had Poore;s GArlic adn Parmesan chips....
I also like ARcher FArms Blue Chips
-
I'm now hearing potato chip catchprases in my head:
"No one can eat just one."
"Rrrrrruffles have rrrridges!"
"Aiy, aiy, yai, yai,
Oh, I am the Frito Bandito!"
-
Will council please approach the bench.
crunch, crunch, crunch... hmm... Yum... crunch, crunch... crunch... Got any dip?... crunch, crunch...
DR JOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU are making me very hungry here at work!!!!!
-
DAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got done yelling at Jose !!! ;D
-
R... rr..rrr....rr..ruffles have rr...r...rr... ridges.

I can barely keep my eyes open, which is a very difficult way to watch a DVD.
-
Good Chips Ahoy! You're driving me bonkers!
;D
-
CRUNCHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Now I will have to stop at the store after work and get something crunchy!!!!
-
I can barely keep my eyes open, which is a very difficult way to watch a DVD.
I had the same problem watching THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII discussed on an earlier page. I had to run the DVR back a few minutes because I nodded off.
I guess I'm just TOO familiar with the story.
-
R... rr..rrr....rr..ruffles have rr...r...rr... ridges.
YOu are enjoying yourself, aren't you jose..... LOL
-
But, I think I'll do something about my heavy liddedness right now.
Good night, all!
-
Now I will have to stop at the store after work and get something crunchy!!!!
And for an extra special treat, just put them on a paper towel and heat them up for about 15 seconds in the microwave.
:)

That is good esp. with the blue chips. I will get those tomorrow when I go to Target.

-
Cilla, they have lutefisk up here that is soaked in Lye....
... it's best with lots of butter.
:-)
Name that movie, anyone?
-
I think I missed a few stops in Minnesota, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, ON, the upper peninsula, and Indiana. Oops.
-
Will someone more competent than I please create a page 9 dance?
-
DR Joy - Well... I guess your bus and truck tour beat mine, so... but I'm not necessarily sure that's a good thing.
;)
*However, did you have "Mom" in Flint, Michigan? -I think she was in Flint. That was some good between show food.
-
... it's best with lots of butter.
:-)
Name that movie, anyone?
Either FArgo or Grumpy Old Men
-
a page 9 Jig!!
-
Will someone more competent than I please create a page 9 dance?
OK...
Well... they look like potato chips... Pringles, at least. ;)
-
Jose, I have a vague memory of "Mom"... can't link her with a particular city, though... I loved the between-show food. You could just eat and take a nap before the next show.
-
Lovely dances, grazie (in honor of the Olympix)!
-
OK...
Well... they look like potato chips... Pringles, at least. ;)
DR Jose, you are a CHIP off the bloc my friend!
-
Who knew there were so many types of chips!
I have always wanted to try Lutkefish, DR DakotaCelt!
-
Whenever Freddy comes in for the night he always smells of smoke...I think he is hanging around the neighborhood ruffians.
-
Whenever Freddy comes in for the night he always smells of smoke...I think he is hanging around the neighborhood ruffians.
Maybe he needs some Sen-Sen.
;)
-
However he smells of smoke from a fire, not from a cigarette, so I don't know what that means.
-
Gosh, another one of THE COWSILLS died. Billy Cowsill passed away Friday in Alberta, Canada at age 58. It appears he was suffering from a number of ailments.
If you recall another member of THE COWSILLS died in Katrina and his body was found just a few months back.
-
I can barely keep my eyes open, which is a very difficult way to watch a DVD.
That's usually how I watch a movie.
-
However he smells of smoke from a fire, not from a cigarette, so I don't know what that means.
Ah, Febreze then?
;)
-
Ohh...
And I finally took down my Christmas tree earlier tonight.
:)
-
Who knew there were so many types of chips!
I have always wanted to try Lutkefish, DR DakotaCelt!
I tried Lutefisk once and I was NOT impressed....
They actually sell it in the stores here.
-
DR Jose.... I am now sitting here eating Garlic and Parmesan chips
I also saw Ketchup chips, Dill Pickle, Vinegar and Salt, Jalapeno, Taco, Pizza, Ranch, Hot Pepper, and a few other interesting varities. We have a local variety called Buffalo Hot.... and they are HOT!!!!
-
... it's best with lots of butter.
:-)
Name that movie, anyone?
Last Tango In Paris.
-
I turned on the Olympics about 10 minutes ago and just happened to see "the look that could kill." I always feel bad for the skaters when things like that happen. :-\
-
Here it is, the visual itinerary of the 2001-2002 bus-n-truck tour of My Fair Lady!
Joy, where in Washington did you play? I worked backstage for a tour that came through Olympia (where I live), but I don't think it was that long ago.
