Title: IN A STATE

Well, you've read the notes, you are now in a state of your own choosing, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're in a state - the state of Flux.

And the word of the day is: FLUX!

I posted about the Kritzer books on the Cinema Treasures site, on the pages of several of the movie theaters that appear within the books.  Well, Benjamin Kritzer went from being number 1,200,000 in the sales rank to number 69,000 in the sales rank.  Quite a nice little jump.

Not sure about X & R.  The definitions would be different here anyway.
"Dog Day Afternoon" was the first movie I saw which had "X" language.

Welcome eleven GUESTS (!).  We're talkin' about "R" and "X" rated first films.

I think that "Midnight Cowboy" might be the only actual "X" rated movie that I've seen.  I have seen (shhhh...don't tell anyone) XXX rated movies ;) (but not the movie, "xXx" with Vin Diesel).

Good morning, all!  The IRS situation is getting ridiculous:  last week, Thursday I believe, I received another 1099 for a rather large amount of money.  I had my taxes done on Feb 9 because of an outstanding IRS problem, some financial problems, and the need to complete the primary work early enough before April 15 to determine a course of action.

So, I had to call my accountant, alert them to the fact that I had just received a 1099, which was supposed to be mailed by Feb 1, and I have to pay a fee to have last year's taxes redone.  I'm to pick them up at noon.  Last evenig a cabaret singer DR Jose and I both know sent me an email saying she was ready to send my 1099 as soon as I sent her my social security number and address!

Two things here really burn my butt:  I will have to pay my accountant another fee and why isn't her accountant on top of this?  Since I always include address and ss# on my invoices, and since she sent me a 1099 last year as well, why isn't this information on record?

Beyond that, the weather continues fine.

TOD:  X-rated: MIDNIGHT COWBOY; since then I've seen too may X- and R-rated movies to remember any of them.  I certainly remember my first XXX-rated film.  1970, Cincinnati, as I recall.  But that's another topic.

Re: last night's Olympics Ice Dance competition.

I love Ice Dancing. If done well it's my favorite of all figure skating.  But last night was a disaster.  I'm glad they've changed the scoring system, so it's not pre-determined who will win.  But what I saw last night was extremely unimpressive.

First off, I don't think I've ever seen someone fall in Ice Dance. But last night at least 3 or 4 teams fell.

Second, DR Jose, I know exactly what you mean about the stare. OMG, that italian woman (they were leading) was vicious. Although her partner probably deserved it.

I was really heartbroken that the Canadian team fell, since I"m sure they would have been in the top 3. They were truly my favorites.  Their fall was really bad (since they were doing a difficult lift). It wasn't the man's fault (she lost her grip on his arm while in the air). But they've been showing it a lot on tv here.  And they are not sure if she will be able to skate.

I was not impressed with the russians now in 1st. I watched them without knowing where they were from or what place they were in, and I think that gave me a very unbiased view.  I thought their unison was really poor (they replayed it and it was completely off). I thought their routine was not inspired. I thought their lifts were not that difficult or interesting. And I found they were skating so far apart. That is key for me. I like them to be so close (that's what makes it difficult).  Anyhow the announcers on CBC said after how great they were (no mistakes). But later they had someone review it and she was going through the mistakes. So at least i'm not crazy.

I did not like the italians that fell either (formerly in 1st). He was not a very good skater and had problems keeping up with her. Plus they skated very far apart.

I guess my favorites were the Canadian/American (skating for US) team. My gosh she has long legs. They were good, although really not as good as I remember past Ice Dancers as being.

Anyhow i'm looking forward to watching the rest. I really hope the Montreal woman is okay.

DR Cillaliz re: THE LOOK and that she obviously blamed him (Olympics).

From the replay it did look to be his fault. HE totally tripped and pulled her down.  The commentators were saying how they had retired and hadn't skated in competition for like 4 years (she had a baby). But they came back cause the Olympics were in Italy.

It must be very frustrating to retire and come back for one competition and then have that happen. But geez she could have been more gracious!

My comments on last night's Desperate Housewives-- SPOILER ALERT!!!

Matt, I see your point about humor not having a place in alcoholism.  However, I did like the way Bree's storyline played out because I thought it did an excellent job of showing how the disease can creep up on you.  Most of us have been out to dinner and had too much to drink on at least one occasion.  And then they have her sparring back and forth with her son and you think maybe it's just him giving her a hard time.  But then you look back and realize how many times you've seen her with a glass in hand, or pouring herself a glass in response to stress.  I think the humor was to lull us into thinking that this was just another quirky plot line- until  something very serious happens as a consequence.

I also liked Gabby's storyline, I thought it explained a lot about who she was and why.  I wanted to shake her mother- little girls are supposed to want to try on their mothers' shoes, makeup and jewelry (and little boys too for that matter) that's part of their developmental process.  And as for who we are to believe- absolutely Gabby.  No fifteen year old girl "seduces" a man twice her age.  That is a lie the child molestor tells to rationalize his behavior.  The adult absolutely has the power in that situation, not the child.  I loved the way Carlos took care of her in the end by saying blood isn't everything.

TOD: The first R rated film that I saw was Carnal Knowledge.  I shocked my mother when I told her that I had seen it.  Then again, she shocked easily.  (I was attending college at the time, in Fresno of all places.)

I never told her about seeing Behind the Green Door.  (Again, in Fresno.  There's something about that town that's pornographic.)

TOD - Hmmm don't remember first R movie I saw. My dad used to take me to movies when I was a little kid when my mother had bridge club. I think I was 6 or 7 when he took me to BONNIE AND CLYDE, which looks like it was rate M at the time. He never paid any attention to ratings, it was just an easy way to babysit

The first X was probably an Emmanuelle movie in college...one night with my boyfriend and then a group of my female friends wanted to go to an X rated movie sometime later. I went along...it was the same movie!!! So I saw it twice...  Yes it deserved an X rating. It was hilarious.

The cabaret singer just sent an email telling me the deadline for 1099s in Feb 28.  So, why so late?  If I'd had lost all my tax records from last year, the 1099s and W2s would be my only record of income.  How can you begin your tax prep without valid records?  I also just got hell from my accountant and a weary "any more coming in?" along with a lecture on my crappy record keeping, which I must admit I deserved.  Still, it burns my ass.

First X Rated movie was A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, and it was shcoking enough to receive its rating, at the time.

Second one was BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, which was on a triple feature with VOTD and MYRA BRECKINRIDGE, which I believe was also rated X.

Many M and R movies, probably the first of which was STRAW DOGS....

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES spoiler - - - -

Yes, DR TPunk, I think Bree's plight is interesting and certainly dramatic. I just felt that first incident, with her passed out on her lawn and her son being typically mean to her, was played for laughs, and I just didn't find her predicament funny. Kids can be cruel to their parents (and Andrew has certainly measured up to that description in numerous ways over the last year and a half), but something about it just struck me as a cheap laugh about something deadly earnest.

But the show is called DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, and I guess they need to keep the ladies in various stages of desperation to earn that title.

First R rated movie was probably something along the lines of SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE or another of those early 1980s teen horror films.

First X rate movie, I believe, was WANDA WHIPS WALL STREET starring Veronica Hart, who I had seen on the Phil Donahue show a few years earlier and became fascinated with.

I think this is a lousy time period for both shows. They're both sophisticated enough to be 9:30 shows, not 8 p.m. comedies. I think OUT OF PRACTICE is going in at 8 and ALEX at 8:30 if I read correctly.

The new Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy is going into that protected hammock between TWO AND A HALF MEN and CSI: MIAMI. I haven't much liked the previews of that new show that I've seen, but I've read a couple of critics who have seen some episodes and say it's good.

Sure! Maybe in the spring or summer we could meet half way....is there anything half way between here and there?  I mean it would be South Dakota after all - well we could get off I-29 and go into Minnesota

Sounds like a plan!!

I think my first two X rated movies were seen almost concurrently and, if memory serves, both in NY.  The first was Coming Apart with Rip Torn and Sally Kirkland, and the second was, of course, Midnight Cowboy.

The sky is very blue here, but I'm not sure if it's warm or cold out, since I didn't arise until ten and have been dealing with IMs and e-mails and telephonic calls.

I think the first X-rated film I saw was Russ Meyer's film VIXEN, which I saw surprisingly enough at a drive-in in Ellensburg, Washington.  Jed, maybe your mother and I........ never mind, too early.

As far as R rated movies, it was probably a toss-up between BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE or THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE.  Hmm, one was one of the funniest movies i had seen at the time; the other was one of the most depressing movies I had seen at the time.

And for those who like COURTING ALEX, I guess you read that CBS is moving it and OUT OF PRACTICE (the show it temporarily replaced) to WEdnesday nights at 8 and 8;30 starting next month. They will replace YES DEAR and STILL STANDING whose seasons will have ended.

Please DR Matt, tell me that this is the end of both series, and not just the end of their seasons!

Monday greetings!  Back from my overnight with Mom (Yes, DR TCB, we are very lucky still to have both mothers).  Her tests at the hospital went smoothly and afterwards she wanted to go to her favorite bakery (Central Pastry, Middletown, OH).  She's probably had her coffee and danish and is taking a nap.  I'm home catching up on last night's posts and trying to figure out the rest of my day off.

I would kill for a Central Pastry birthday cake with sugar roses!

DR SWW - "The Second Greatest Sex" is crooned in the movie - but my favorite is the one all the gals belt out after the old maid school marm (played by Edna Skinner) tells 'em all about Lysistrata.  They decide to go on a "love strike" and move into the old abandoned fort....all except Cousin Emmy, the blacksmith, who don't cotton to menfolk no way no how...anyways.

Good Afternoon!

-I would wish Good Morning greetings to the West Coast contingent, but since it's already Afternoon there too...

;)

I ended up staying in bed until 2:00... Just felt tired.  Actually, I've also been feeling something going on in my sinuses and throat the past few days, and it feels like it felt when I would get chronic low-level ear infections... I never felt any pain in my ears, but my sinuses and throat would get a little sore... So... I was always advised to rest as much as I could when I got them, so... Just playing it safe.  However, I'm pretty sure the rather rapid return to winter weather has also contributed to my possible malady.

I am feeling better this afternoon, but if I happen to still feel a little "off" when I get up tomorrow morning, I may try to sneak in a visit to my doctor/uncle before heading back up to NYC.

Please DR Matt, tell me that this is the end of both series, and not just the end of their seasons!

I would say that the decision to renew them will be based on how OUT OF PRACTICE and COURTING ALEX do in these timeslots. If there is a significent improvement from the ratings those other two shows generated, then most certainly CBS will end them. On the other hand, I think they have KING OF QUEENS, YES DEAR, and STILL STANDING, all of which are on the bubble and probably not all will be renewed for next year, but they're going to keep the ones that rate the highest in these early slots. I think OUT OF PRACTICE is far superior to any of the others in quality, but CBS is only interested in ratings, and to the victor goes the renewal.

DR elmore - Sorry about your troubles with the cabaret singer.  :-\

And, yes, alas, unfortunately, 1099s have a later deadline than W-2s.  Most companies will send them out by January 31 since their computers will just print them out with their W-2s, but then there are others...

I also believe that one can file a tax return without an actual copy of a 1099 - or at least it was that way at one point and time.  -Maybe DR FJL can confirm or deny this.  There was one year I had lots of 1099 income, and my accountant just ended up doing a listing on a separate piece of paper with the companies and amounts, and sent that in with the return.  As long as she and/or I had a copy of the 1099 or at least proof of the income, that's all that was needed (since no taxes were withheld, they fall low on the government's tracking list, so to speak.)  -At least that's what I told at the time... And since I was not audited...

Well, at least for amounts lower than $600... But..

OK.. I'll stop rambling and digging this hole now...

;)

Ahh yes, the old Ellen Drive-In.  How I wish it were still there.  Sadly that land is now filled with some condos for residents age 55+, as well as a little complex of offices containing a doctor or two, a chiropractor, and some school district offices (that's what was there about a year ago, anyway).

As for the Topic of the Day...

I was going to say "Jaws", but according to the IMDB, it's only a PG.  Then I was going to say "Orca", but, again, just PG.

Then I realized that I'm pretty sure my parents would not have taken me and my brothers to an R-rated movie - and I remember seeing both "Jaws" and "Orca" at a drive-in movie with my parents.  So...

I guess the first R-rated movies I can recall seeing would be ones I saw while I was in high school.  And I watched them in class.  And this was in a Catholic High School too!  I remember watching "Ordinary People" in Father Luis Valdivieso's Sociology Class, and "Apocalypse Now" in AP English - with a nun in the room!

Hmmm... Now I'm wondering if "Ordinary People" was released today if it would still receive and R rating?  Hmm..

...But I do remember some of the hushed conversations that my parents would have with my adult relatives and their friends after they had seen a movie that they did not take me and my brothers to.  I specifically remember them trying not to talk about "The Exorcist" in front of me and my brothers.

We were living in Seattle at the time, and my aunt, Tess, was staying with us at the time.  My parents saw the movie one night while my aunt was the babysitter, and then my aunt saw it another night while my parents stayed home.  I remember her being sort of freaked out, but didn't know why.  And there were a few times when I would walk into the living room and they - my parents and my aunt - would stop talking...  Hmm...  Eventually, my aunt told me she had seen the movie.  At that time, I didn't really know anything about it, so I just figured it was an "adult" thing and left it at that.  However, a couple of years later when I found out what all the fuss was about, well...  Ah!

Now, as for X-rated movies... Hmm...  Let's just say my father did not hide his video tapes very well from me and my very curious brothers.  Oh, and my cousin, Alex, was quite the "adult" at age 14, and he managed to have some films on 8mm, and would show them to his friends in his bedroom.

And then he also managed to de-scramble some of the adult channels on the cable system.  And there were those inevitable evenings spent watching the scrambled transmissions while hoping for a few moments of clarity every now and then.

HA!  Boy were we immature!

*Of course, after a while, I realized I was not being entertained by the women in those movies...

Concerned Clergy wants Perry Meridian High School to cancel its production of RAGTIME because it contains the "n" word.  Concerned Clergy said that asked the school to change the word (which of course contractually, they CAN'T do).

The Superintendant of the school system says the play will go on.  The Concerned Clergy will stage protests when the play opens on Thursday.

I only know that the bit of rehearsal they showed featured hip hop choreography and some inarticulate spokespeople from the cast....I think they may have been speaking English, but I'm not sure.

I went to Ground Zero in the Spring of 2002 and it was very very difficult for me. Last spring, we had a meeting at the Marriott Financial Center, so I spent 3 or 4 days and nights literally a block from there.  I was amazed at the positive changes, the train station, the way places have been rebuilt or are in the process.

I did go see the sphere or orb. When I stayed at the Marriott World Trade Center in November 2000, my view was the sphere. So it was really interesting to go see it and the way it survived.

I realize I'm not a New Yorker, so the meaning may be different for me, but spending a number of days at ground zero and really focusing on how things are coming back to life and thinking about how amazing it is that even though there was such a tremendous loss, New York is so resilient and alive. It was actually uplifting. That may sound strange, but it always feels good to know that life goes on.  The photo on my avatar is from that trip - when my friend Steve and I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and back before breakfast.

The question is, DRJOSE - where is cousin Alex today?

I believe he and his wife and two adorable sons are still living in the DC Metro area.  He eventually cleaned up his act, but it took him a while.  He was never really into drugs, drinking, smoking, etc - at least to my knowledge - but it took him a while to become a real adult.  Truth be told, he was the bane of my existence when were in middle and high school - he was just two years older/ahead of me..  He was one of the "cool kids", and I was a "drama queer".  But from what I gather, he's settled down in many ways, and all for the better.

-I actually haven't had any direct contact with him in a couple of years, and the last time I saw him was at the funeral for his mother.  His eulogy - well, more like commentary - sort of pissed me off.  -And it also upset my parents.  He made some comment about how there were a lot of faces in the church that day that he had not seen in years, and how it was sad that "we" only came together during the difficult times.  "Take a look at the faces around you, and decided whether you really want to spend time with the people around you."  -I just wanted to say to him, "Well, it's a two way streak.  I may not have been in contact with you over the past couple of years, but you haven't been in contact with me either..."  It was just such a weird and inappropriate comment to make at a funeral.

OK... That's my Oprah moment for the day.

That's a wonderful sentiment, and I know exactly how you feel.  It really is amazing at how "normal life" has resumed in New York City post-9/11.  Sometimes it feels like nothing ever happened, and while it's never a good thing to forget, there is something comforting in that sense of continuity

Before I left for that bus and truck tour of Anything Goes - remember that map? ;) - I bought a pair of webcams for me and Steve.  -Actually, I believe the cams came in a two-pack now that I think of it.  Well...  This way we could say Goodnight - and sometimes Good Morning - "in person" to each other as I travelled across the country.  I would even take pics on the bus.  It was a great way to document my trip, and keep in touch with Steve at the same time.  I also managed to take a lot of pics of various hotel room art.  :P

But since you asked...

Here I am in my hotel room in Ruidoso, NM.  I believe it was a Super 8.  And there was also a Biker's Rally in town at the same time.  And there was lots of "interesting" smoke in the hallways wafting from underneath the rooms doors.

We stayed in Ruidoso, but played up on the mountain in Alto, NM.  The views from there were gorgeous!  And the theatre complex itself was quite spectacular too.  They had lots of Chihuly glass in the lobby.

-And here I am on the bus heading out of NM.

Oh, and here is a pic of our set in the theatre in Flint, Michigan.

-OHH!!! Now I remember, "Mom" was in Clinton Township, MI.  However, Flint will forever be remembered for one of the scariest hotels I've ever stayed in.  It was a TraveLodge, but by the time we had reached there, they had lost the franchise license, so it was just a TraveLodge.  -The "Trave" was blacked out on the sign!  Ah, memories.. :-\

In any case... here's the set from the balcony:

I remember driving up to NYC a few months after 9/11 with some friends...  Seeing the WTC was always the sign that I was very close to The City...  It truly was a different landscape, different skyline...  And still is.

For a friend of mine in N. New Jersey, the WTC was a landmark going to and from work.

That's a wonderful sentiment, and I know exactly how you feel.  It really is amazing at how "normal life" has resumed in New York City post-9/11.  Sometimes it feels like nothing ever happened, and while it's never a good thing to forget, there is something comforting in that sense of continuity

I admire the city for its resiliency, but I just looked at that huge emptiness, thought of everyone who died, and lost it!  For about a year after 9/11, I couldn't pass a policeman or fireman/firehouse without breaking into tears.  Such inhuman cruelty still amazes me.

I have not seen that in years in these parts. Off to get a bite to eat and put togehter the lamp i bought... This could get interesting. I just hope the instructions are in English and not Korean or Japanese.

I watched a very strange little movie last night on DVD.  It was called STRAIGHT-JACKET, and, no, sorry MBarnum; there was no Joan Crawford or John Anthony Hayes in this version.

It is a comedy about a 1950s screen idol, like Rock Hudson, who happens to be gay, like Rock Hudson.  So, to save his career, he marries the secretary of the studio head, like Rock Hudson.

It had a very likeable cast with: Matt Letscher, Jason Plotnick, Michael Emerson, and a very wonderful Carrie Preston. It was filmed in a very Fifties-style, with cardboard looking sets, very bright colors, and a very filmed-play style of camera work.  There was some very funny moments in the movie, but boy, when they tried to get serious or deliver the message of the film, the movie kind of fell apart.

I know others. here, have said they had seen it, but I don't remember anybody's opinion.

TOD:  I believe the first X-rated film I saw was CALIGULA, which I saw at the Avenue U movie theater in Brooklyn.  I was very bored.  First XXX movie was DEEP THROAT, which I still remember for its title song.

First R film I saw was, I believe, THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT.  I really didn't understand it then, but I had to see Barbra Streisand so my folks took me to see it.

Ginny, we just finished (actually it was at about 5:30) dinner of left over tuna glop. It was very successful on Saturday and just as successful tonight. It was so successful that when we went shopping this afternoon as we walked down the aisles Anthony asked if we should get more Mac and Cheese so I can make tuna glop next week. Your recipie was a success! Of course, I can continue to make tuna glop (or chicken if I choose to experiment) as long as I continue to ride the exercise bike for an hour every day (or at least 4 days a week) or I will turn into a glop myself.

We had a very nice three day weekend, doing not much of anything. We watched 200 American (a Larry Moore gift) and like it. We watched Keeping Up Appearances and As Time Goes By on Channel 21 and Channel 13 (two PBS stations in the area) and we burned some CDs. Anthony is taking a break from making labels and booklets. He's watching a Lifetime Movie Network movie so I'm here catching up before I have to return to the grind tomorrow morning.

Be careful what you order, Jrand.  STRAIT-JACKET is Joan Crawford.  STRAIGHT-JACKET is the Rock Hudson spoof.  I would certainly watch STRAIGHT-JACKET a second time.  Some of the lines are wonderful.  And Veronica Cartwright is very butch and quite funny in the film.

Of course Joan's co-star was one Leif Erickson, ex-husband of you know who, and I'm only hoping she had the presence of mind not to wander into a theatre just to see what he was up to in 1964.

Just for you, DR elmore:

Quote

Hey!  Matilda, Matilda, Matilda, she take me money and run
Venezuela.
Once again now!
Matilda, Matilda, Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Five hundred dollars, friends, I lost:
Woman even sell me cat and horse!
Heya!  Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Everybody!
(Matilda,) Sing out the chorus,
(Matilda,) Sing a little louder,
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Once again now!
(Matilda,) Going 'round the corner,
(Matilda,) Sing out the chorus,
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Well, the money was to buy me house an' lan'
Then she got a serious plan,
A-hey, ah!
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Everybody!
(Matilda,
Matilda,
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.)
Once again now!
(Matilda,) Going 'round the corner,
(Matilda,
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.)
Well, the money was just inside me bed,
Stuck up in a pillow beneath me head.
Don't you know,
Matilda, she found me money and...
Everybody...
(Matilda,
Matilda,
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.)
Once again now!
(Matilda,) Hooma locka chimba,
(Matilda,) Bring me little water,
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Women over forty?
(Matilda,
Matilda,
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.)
Everybody!
(Matilda,) Goin' round the corner,
(Matilda,) Bring me little water,
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Well, me friends, never to love again,
All me money gone in vain!
Uh, heya...
Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.
Everybody!
(Matilda,
Matilda,) Oom, ba-locka-chimba!
(Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela.)
Sing a little softer!

(Language differences are fraught!)

I hope you do better with the lyrics than did poor Jimmie Rodgers!  He had to rerecord the song for Australian audiences.

The song has been a Top 40 hit here for:
Jimmie Rodgers
The Seekers
Frank Ifield

and  Dame Edna had a version too.

She used to tell us stories about growing up on the Prairie. The one I've never forgotten is about a snake that bit a man so he bit the snake back. The snake died and the man lived. I could never quite figure that one out when I was little. Why on earth would anyone want to bite a snake?

Me, too.  I think I have some highlights on a CD....but no complete recording.  Of course PT's will always be my favorite!  ;D

When I was looking for GOLDEN BOY this afternoon, I found a 1958 RCA studio recording of SHOW BOAT with Howard Keel, Anne Jeffreys, and Gogi Grant.  Grant is singing all the "Julie" songs and Anne is doing "Magnolia"...Howard also sings "Ol' Man River" in addition to Gaylord's songs.  8)

DR JRand - If you'd like a single-disc recording of the Prokofiev "Romeo & Juliet", I'm rather partial to the suite that Michael Tilson put together and recorded with the San Francisco Symphony on RCA.  And it's been reissued as part of their mid-priced series.

Otherwise, I agree with DR elmore about the Lorin Maazel recording.  It's a complete recording, and I believe that it is part of Decca/London's 2-for-1 series.

Dakota - I grew up in Estherville, IA. It's a lot more Norweigian than Sioux City is. I think we had 5 Lutheran Churches in a town of 8000 people. Some of our family's best friends were the Hendrickson's. The father in the family, Jerry was from somewhere near Fargo. So I had a lot of exposure to Nort Dakota while I was growing up.

Not to be a pain in the neck CPA/tax attorney, but strictly speaking, it really seems to have been the position of the IRS that it's the responsibility of the person filing a Schedule C to keep track of their income throughout the year.  It's supposed to be income from your business as a "self-employed" person, and it's supposedly the notion that you're running it like a business that allows someone the deductions he or she might take.  The IRS actually has, in the case of some of our clients whose returns were being audited for other reasons, asked for bank statements of people with Schedule C's rather than just accepting the total of that person's 1099's, so if someone is self-employed, you probably need to be able to account for just about every deposit you make to your bank accounts.  :(

DR JRand, I think with those two extra numbers on the front of the GOLDEN BOY numbers, you have the original reissue. I bought a later reissue with different numbers.

The best way to tell is to simply play "Night Song" and see if Sammy's voice is hoarse or smooth. Do you have a working turntable?

BTW, my GOLDEN BOY later reissue LP has Sammy Davis' face (done in a drawing rather than a photo) on the front cover rather than the original GOLDEN BOY logo with the deawing of Joe and Lorna hugging.

Wow!  The American couple were shaking booty out there!

I would say that about most of the skaters tonight.  Exciting skating, choreography and music choices.  Much better costumes, too!

I was on the edge of my seat for about 75% of '24' tonight, and the other 25%, I was just squirming out of anxiety. The show has generated the most amazing consistency of tension this season that I can ever remember.

Here's another:

The telephone ring and Lena picks it up.

"Hello, Lena!  It's Ole!  You will never guess where I am calling from!  I'm in the car!  I bought one of those new fangled car phones.  I'm talkin' to you while I am drivin' home!"

And Lena says, "Oooh, Ole--be careful!  They just announced on the radio that there's a nut out there who's driving on the wrong side of the highway!"

And Ole says, "A nut!  Hell, there must be a hundred of 'em!"

Due to the recent improvement in employment status for both DG Ann and myself, we have found ourselves in the market for a new apartment.  Our current one-bedroom shoebox was just fine and dandy when it was Ann's by herself, and has sufficed for the two of us, but we would be much happier with a little more space.  And by golly, I do believe we've found our new home.

It's a nice two bedroom with a load of storage space, a bigger living room than we currently have, a kitchen that two people can actually stand in at once (as opposed to our current postage stamp), will soon be equipped with free high-speed internet, and has a lovely, large balcony with a very nice view of both the water and mountains.  Our rental application is in, and we have an appointment to sign the lease tomorrow night.  We even get the first month's rent free!

One other interesting thing about this particular place... we'll be sharing a living room wall with some guy who goes by the name of TCB... ;D

TOD: The first R rated film that I saw was Carnal Knowledge.  I shocked my mother when I told her that I had seen it.  Then again, she shocked easily.  (I was attending college at the time, in Fresno of all places.)

This always reminds me of the "All In the Family" episode when Archie and Edith went to see it, thinking they were going to see something called "Carnival Knowledge!"

I think someone may have seen it and mentioned it here.  This is in my Netflix queue.

Rodzinski... we had to have been at the same IKEA, there is only one on Long Island.  You were in Hicksville!  I wonder if we were there at the same time!  The Cheescake Factory where you ate is in the next parking lot from the Best Buy where Vixdad bought the computer doohickey  (and that is in Westbury!)

One other interesting thing about this particular place... we'll be sharing a living room wall with some guy who goes by the name of TCB... ;D

CONGRATULATIONS!! and...what a small world. ;)

They're about to show the couple that fell last night and haven't spoken to each other since then.

Well, to my untrained eye, they just skated a flawless routine.  Very good...and the crowd loved them. :)

So far, so good!  Today, I actually made a couple of purchases, as well!  I bought the DVDs to "Blazing Saddles" and "Contact," and a comedy CD by a guy named Daniel Tosh.  It's called "True Stories I Made Up (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BKDNVW/sr=8-1/qid=1140506039/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-4779504-7364131?%5Fencoding=UTF8)" and includes a CD and DVD.

DR MATTH - I have the Golden Boy LP - had it for YEARS - but have never listened to all of it.  If I can find someone who can put it on cassette for you, I will make you a copy.  I will keep you posted.
I can put it on cassette...and CD. :)

DR MATTH - it IS the reissue.  Sammy sounds smooth and mellow...and it is on the Capital Orange label....I think the original would be on the Capital black label with the rainbow rings like the old Beatles albums...and the fine print on the back says....manufactured by Columbia House under license from Capital Records...says the same thing on the label.  I think I have a Record Club edition of the album!

I suspected as much as soon as you mentioned the drawing of his face.  Thanks just the same. I'll hear those tracks one of these days.

I just checked my copy and I have the VAS-2124 (mono) edition, as well as the BK re-issue.  There is a noticeable difference between the two versions.  Of course, the album being in mono and having lots of pops throughout the whole thing doesn't help. :P And either my record changes speed by itself or some songs are in different keys.  "Night Song" is a half-step lower on the Cd.  On the next song, "Everything's Great", both versions are in the same key.  Hmm.... ::) On the third song, "Gimme Some," the album is in a lower key as well as "Stick Around," but that sounds like it's a third lower.  What gives?

Holy moley on rye if we haven't had us a frenzy since I left at 1:45.  It took me a half-hour to read all the posts (we were on page four when I left!), but I'm caught up and now I must write the notes.  Shall we go for 400 before midnight?

Just checked my own copy of "Golden Boy".
I have the Capital recording in stereo. I doubt if I've played it more than once! I would have purchased it second hand about 15 years ago.

At least it's another post.

I doubt if I have seen the film version of Clifford Otes play either.

I always seem to confuse "Golden Boy" with "Mr Wonderful".
