Well, you've read the notes, you've tapped your feet to the notes, the notes had rhythm and swing, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're chewing their collective cuds and reading Proust.

Good morning, all!  I must needs hie myself to Toyland for a while today, and then it's time to finish off this choral piece and begin work on a number for Miss Karen Ziemba.

I had a lovely visit with DRs Jose and Jason yesterday afternoon, and DR Jason brought me a sparkling gift, which is much appreciated.  DR Jose looks great; the effects of his diet are showing, but to me he will always be the man who walks down Broadway and consumes his weight in food on the way.  As I worked around the apartment yesterday, I checked out two DVDs, a performance of Mozart's DIE ZAUBERFLOTE from 1983 and Strauss' DIE FLEDERMAUS from about the same time.  Both were quite wonderful, although the ZAUBERFLOTE as a staged production lacks the final magic of Ingmar Bergman's wonderful film of THE MAGIC FLUTE.

After dinner with DRs Jason and Jose, I worked a bit on my medley for the chorus, watched a bit of MAD TV, which had a funny parody of GHOSTWATCHER, and went to bed.

Sunday morning greetings!   Today is a one-day weekend for me.  DH Richard and I will go to church in Cincinnati, have lunch and a brief visit with DS Rob, and then go to a concert by The King's Singers.  They are performing at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral - a place I'm ashamed to say I've never visited in the 33 years I've lived in the area.

Sending vibes to:  DR Danise for continued recovery, DR Joy for dreams come true, DR Jason 'cause I miss him, and all the DRs who are feeling under the weather.

Requesting vibes for:  my mother-in-law, age 89, who's back in the hospital.  We'll check on her before we take off for Cincinnati.

I find that wearing a nice wig while giving notes is a great way to get the full attention of the cast and crew.

Since MADTv was a repeat - and the GhOST WHISPERER parody was VERY funny - I put on the STRAWBERRY STATEMENT dvd.

I was whisked back to 1969 or so.  Not a GREAT movie, but very good music and some nice young players....Bruce Davison, Kim Darby, Bud (friend of MR BK) Cort, and in all his YOUNG glory Mr Bob Balaban playing the leader of the group "sitting in" at the University President's Office.

Looks like my seller made a copy of his VideoBeat disk, but it looked much better than I expected, although it is in full screen.

THE RESTLESS YEARS....oh my, yes.  Also featuring Virginia Grey, Jody McCrea, and John Wilder.  Luana Patten does a wild cha cha and tries to force Sandy to give her the lead in OUR TOWN...which Sandra has won even though she wears strange clothes....and then there's the Bandstand!!  Dorothy Green is terrific.

Well...I guess we could talk today about Mr Don Knotts....

I first remember him from The Steve Allen Show, as the nervous man on the street.  He would shake and shake and try to answer questions even though he had about a hundred body, face, and hand tics.  Allen would finally ask him what his job was.  The reply:

"I put pins in hand grenades."

About Knotts's character in THE LOVE GOD?:

"Your honor, the prosecution has said that my client is a degenerate, a pornographer, the lowest form of human life.  We don't deny this....."

And Knotts' facial reaction was priceless and hilarious.

A bad day im hollywood yesteday not only did Don Knotts pass, but Darren McGavin also passed.

Did you know that BK does a wonderful Don Knotss vocal impression? If you closed your eyes you would swear he was right there.

Darren McGavin wonderful character actor who I first new when he did a series of car commercials in Canada and then I saw him a film with Roz Russell called Mrs. Polifax Spy. I also happened to meet him and his late wife when they came to my film school and showed From Zero to Sixty.

Did anybody else watch the Olympics yesterday.  Speedskating is probably my favorite sport to watch, so I rewatched it last night on NBC.

Comments:

First off, I found it slightly annoying that NBC shows things out of order.  They showed Apollo Ono's first races in short track way before they showed the long track (when the long track happened much earlier). But whatever.

I was actually very impressed with NBC's coverage, mostly.  Especially the way the covered the women's longtrack race.  I was stunned at how much time they gave to the Canadians. I guess with no American hopefuls they had to do something. But it was really moving.

Then came the men's short track race.  I was cheering for the 2 Canadians in the final.  They were up against Ono and the Korean (who apparently is Ono's arch rival, or so NBC said).  So their focus was on them. I was pretty disappointed that there were 2 false starts, and then it looked like maybe the American started early. So he stayed in the lead the entire race. I was also disppointed that the Korean edged his skate in at the end for 3rd place. :(

The most interesting NBC coverage was the men's short track relay. This is the craziest race ever, and with 5 teams (instead of 4) in the finals it was even more insane.

There were 2 races going on, one for first (with the canadians and koreans) and one for third (the US and italy).  I wonder if i was the only one annoyed that the chinese skater (in last) sort of got in the way at the end. It ruined the ending for me. Of course i wanted the Canadians to win. But i just wanted to see the end of that race be clean.

But what made me crazy was watching NBC's coverage. Now i get it, they are catering to American viewers. But they stopped showing the race for first (in the relay) between the Canadians and Koreans and only showed the race for third between the US and italians.

I was trying to think if the situation had been reversed, and it was the canadian team in third, would i have rather seen that or the leaders, and I really believe I would rather see the leaders.  I really think they should have shown the winners and then gone back after and shown the race for third. Instead they did the opposite.

I'm curious if any of you guys saw that race, and if you felt the same way.

Last night, DR Rodzinski wrote:

"I rarely am nuts about modern "important" movies made by Hollywood. But the last two films I saw, CAPOTE and GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK were remarkable, and so I must briefly rave about them.

Great lead performances at their core, but also great, subtle direction. And I find period detail in these sort of movies is often so overdone, seeming overly glossy or overly obvious, but these two films do a fantastic job recreating their time periods, again subtly. And the final bit of subtlety is in the films underlying themes. Not a heavy handed moment in either! One is not pounded over the head with the grim irony of Capote's situation or the connections between McCarthyism and our current situation in GOOD NIGHT. Two wonderful films and powerful achievements."

Absolutely agree with you in every respect. These two films are very powerful and completely unpretentious. They just are what they are and are all the more wonderful for their simplicity of storytelling and character exploration.

And they were each made for less than $10 million making their cases for being quality films at a reasonable price.

I had read of Don Knotts' passing yesterday, but was completely saddened to read about Darren McGavin in the newspaper this morning. What a wonderful actor.

Just to watch him in action on KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER or in A CHRISTMAS STORY is to see a master at work. I will miss him a great deal.

Got back from our whirlwind trip to Boca about 1:30 in the morning.

BOCA BAR MITZVAH - that's the title of my next documentary.

Getting there went without a hitch (execpt for the fact that it was a 7:30 flight, which I haven't done in many many years).  The synagogue service was set to start at 11:30, and our plane actually got to Fort Lauderdale early, so we made it to the synagogue with enough time to spare to say hellos before the actually prayers started.  The Bar mitzvah boy was pluperfect in his reading of the Torah and Haftorah and saying the prayers (when I was 13, I only had to read the Haftorah; what this young man did seemed extremely ambitious and his exceution fo it was exemplary.)  At the appropriate time, I said a Refuah Shlemah prayer for Danise, hope Danise felt vibes from Boca around 12:45 yesterday.

Then it was on to a gorgeous party, chockful of entertainment, including a group doing the Bottle Dance (which frankly looks more difficult than the Lambada - the Forbidden Dance - which I've seen at other Bar Mitzvahs by people who've drunk a little too much).  We were at a lovely table with several people we knew, and I also got to meet the truly lovely, effervescent Jan McArt, who was also at our table.  (What a terrific lady; I've heard that Jan McArt can be a controversial figure in the local theater scene in Boca, but she's an absolute delight!)

Don Knott's always amazes me whenever i come across an episode of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW...he was just so funny...it has been decades since I have seen any of his 1960s films...I should add some to my Netflix queue.

Darrin McGavin, as DR JRand55, was so good as Mike Hammer...and pretty much anything else he did.

Since we were flying back that night, we hadn't planned on going to the evening party, which was the "South Beach chic" attired party I talked about a few weeks ago.  So we didn't really have a change of clothing for that party, but the bar mitzvah boy's Mom and other family and friends heard our evening flight back was delayed a bit, so insisted that we at least come for 45 minutes or so of that party, which was held in the amphitheater at Mizner Park, or more accurately ON the stage at the amphitheater.  "South Beach chic" seemed to have been a term which confused a lot of people - not everyone had Jose to explain it to them :)  - so most people just came dressed casual but nice, and we just made do with what we were wearing for the 45 minutes or so we were there.  It was a lovely do, though,a nd it was a lot of fun to see the set-up for it.

The airline situation back was an odd one.  They had overestimated the length of the flight to begin with, so even though the plane was leaving over an hour late, they kept assuring everyone that we would be getting in to Newark only about twenty minutes "late" according to the original arrival time on our reservations.  Which begged the question, why estimate a flight duration of over 3 hours if it only takes 2-1/2 hours?  But it allowed people to feel less disappointed overall, since even though the flight left over an hour late, what we got was a flight which we were told would land at 12:40 but ended up landing at 1 a.m. - so maybe by overestimating flight diurations, they end up allowing a cushion which results in less disappointment for customers.

I'm astonished in reading over yesterday's posts how many of the songs that I heard on the airline's in-flight listening system were mentioned in yesterday's posts here.  Fun coincidence.

Darren McGavin really first became known to me through A CHRISTMAS STORY, and then the DELICATE DELINQUENT.

Two auditions yesterday - one quite by accident. The other WAS an accident!

Hadn't slept well, first time at the new loft... had a call from the ex to tell me that nobody showed up for the ZORBA audition in No. Hwd... get down here. Okay, so dress and blast outa here to get there by 2, hopin' I get on and outa there in time to head down to San Diego for the NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY thing I've been working on for two weeks...

There were only 4 people there at the Zorba thing - I sang, they said "Thanks" and I got on the I-5 to San Diego. Arrived WAY early, so had a little coffee and a bagel. Then - the pianist was half an hour late, so I cooled my heels. Finally they asked for the monologue while I waited. Gave 'em one of the Mom speeches from JEWISH THIGHS. They laughed! God, I love it when that happens.

Then cooled my heels again. Finally, pianist showed up, and I came in and sang the Old Lady's Tango from CANDIDE. Director asked me to do it again, as a little yenta from Brooklyn. Hey, I can do that. They laughed. I love it when that happens.

Apparently they had already cast the two 'regular" roles - and were only reading people for the Jewish Mother and the Serial Killer. Four of each. Grueling? yup. Three hours into it, I had lost most of my talent and ALL of my charisma. Good lesson - remember to stay talented and charismatic, no matter HOW long the audition is. Oy.

But, I tell yiz, I sure did sleep last night! Write if you get work...

In fact, those pages came to our guy "camera-ready" from the production, and the letters appeared in all proofs until the book printed. A rather mysterious thing, that.

It really is such a strange "error".  However, I noticed that in one place where there is white lettering on a black background, there is a very faint ghost image of the "missing" letter - a "Y" in this case.

I would be interested in finding out if a "culprit" is every found.

Had a nice afternoon of video watching while I did other chores (laundry, dishwashing, etc.)

Started with another CSI episode (only one more left and that season's episodes will be complete).

This was the one that dealt with a SHerlock Holmes society in which the member playing Holmes was found murdered. An offbeat and very entertaining episode with a mystery fully worthy of the Master.

Next up was an episode of FIREFLY involving "reivers," cannibalistic humans who catch their well-intentioned victims by pretending to be in dire peril and in need of rescue. Much entertaining episode.

I will probably watch the one remaining CSI episode - entitled "Snakes" with George Eads playing a leading role (and providing commentary on the DVD) - before COLD CASE this evening.

Then, I'll be finding a film in the to-watch stack to watch for the reamining two hours of the evening. Don't know what that will be at this time.

I don't watch DANCING WITH THE STARS or GREY'S ANATOMY, nor am I curious about the closing ceremonies of the Olympics, so I'll find something else to view.

I was just reading a review of the DVD of YOUNG MR. LINCOLN, a Fox film that Fox turned over to Criterion to package and release.

One wonders why Fox would turn one of its real gems (directed by John Ford) over to Criterion when they've done just fine with a wide range of their own classics under their own label (and a quite a bit less money to the consumer).

I'm sure the Criterion disc is superb, but I just found it odd that Fox wouldn't want to package and distribute one of its own which might gain it great acclaim. This is one of the greats.

Hello To All!
Long time, no post! Been much too busy. And today I don't have the time either, BUT I didn't want the day to pass without a mention of meeting the gracious host of this here site last night!

At first, I was a little disappointed that he didn't recognize me, but then I realized--he's never even seen a photograph of me, let alone met me in person! Oy. Such a ball of energy and quick wit is he. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation, and also meeting Linda Purl. I've long been a fan and to see this other side of her was wonderful.

Cabaret West is a co-sponsor of the Cabaret Series at The Shannon Center and Linda's show was the last in its second season. It was a great finale. BK's contributions to Linda's show were very much in evidence and, if ever she is performing in your city, I strongly encourage you to see her. You won't be disappointed!

Did you know Linda grew up and studied in Japan and one of her first roles was as Louis, Anna's son, in The King and I? To illustrate, she sang Whistle a Happy Tune in Japanese. It was absolutely delightful! And, boy, can she belt! Every so often I glimpsed a similarity to Judy Garland--although she is definitely her own person. She slips into the emotion of a song and tells its story so effortlessly. She's a complete joy to watch and listen to, and with BK's sure hand, her show can only get better.

Happy Birthday to all and Loving Blessings and Prayers to those in need.

What a day! Much unpacking done and 30 boxes broken down and taken to the recycling center.  I saved way too many boxes at the old house and we took tons of them out of there (well, maybe not tons, but a lot more than I will admit) so I have sworn that I will not save my cardboard boxes and started on it today.

I have a lot more to unpack. Most of those boxes were books and the last bit of the kitchen stuff. It's so nice to have books on shelves again. It really feels more like home

I also love THE SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST - and THE GHOST AND MR CHICKEN....

Did Barney and Thelma Lou ever get married?  I can't remember.  I know Knotts left the show after five years - because Griffith had decided to end it, but then after Knotts was contractually obligated to Universal Studios, Griffith was talked into going for a few more season.  It was NEVER the same, and some of the people they got to replace Barney were terrible.  One deputy - can't think of the comedian's name....was terrible.

Even though the Dancing With The Stars finale is on now, I'm not watching. I stopped after they got rid of Lisa Rinna and kept Jerry Rice. I will probably tune in at the end just to see who wins. Hopefully it will be Drew Lachey.

I watched parts of the Closing Ceremonies this afternoon.  The Vancouver 2010 parts were sort of touching to me. And it was nice to hear Avril Lavigne sing.  Then when I switched to the other CBS (newsworld) they were doing an hour feature on Elizabeth Manley (it totally made me cry).

Back from a really good performance of the play, and a really lovely dinner with Miss Jessica Rush, who I think terrif.  She's starring in a new musical about to premiere at the (heaven help me) Ricardo Montalban Theater - really the Huntington Hartford to anyone who grew up in LA (the final Kritzer book is loaded with loving references to the Hartford).  It's something called Pilgrim, which I'll go see when it opens.  For anyone with the latest Guy Haines CD, the beautiful Miss Rush sings I'm Past My Prime with Mr. Haines - and it's one of my favorite duet tracks ever.

I had special sale coupons for Macy's... But I didn't end up buying anything.  There were a few temptations along the way, but nothing that was truly a must-have or must-buy.  However, the next round of clearance discounts kick in this Wednesday, so...  ;)

I always feel bad when two or more celebrities pass away within a very short period of time.  It seems as if one person never quite gets the attention or respect that they deserve.  I remember when Mother Teresa passed away, her death went almost unnoticed, because it followed so closely on the heals of Princess Diana's death.

I noticed it again when ABC Weekend News announced tonight that there was one passing of note this weekend; and then went on to discuss the death of Don Knotts.  Maybe it was because he had such close ties to Tacoma, but Darren McGavin was always one of my favorite televison actors.  It would be a shame if his passing was not properly noted (except, of course, here at HHW).

I always feel bad when two or more celebrities pass away within a very short period of time.  It seems as if one person never quite gets the attention or respect that they deserve.  I remember when Mother Teresa passed away, her death went almost unnoticed, because it followed so closely on the heals of Princess Diana's death.

Mother Teresa wouldn't have wanted the attention, I don't think.

I finally broke down and bought the LEAVE IT TO BEAVER season 1 DVD set.

I also picked up DVD sets ($5 a set at Fred Meyer) of the following TV series:

GANG BUSTERS (12 EPISODES)

MEDIC (16 episodes)

LOCK -UP (10 episodes)

BUFFALO BILL, JR (12 EPISODES)
PISTOLS N PETTICOATS (6 EPISODES)
FRONTIER DOCTOR (4 EPISODES)

Those last 3 shows are all on once set!

That is a LOT of television to watch!

Had dinner at Macaroni Grill with my sister Sue, brother in law Doug, niece Katie and hubby Brian, nephew John and wife/family Jamie, Taylor, Benny, brother Jeff and wife Linda...it was fun.

I had veal something-or-other which was quite tasty.

Wow, and I thought it was Ricky Schroder!

Wallace Beery and Jon Voight the same? Not in this lifetime.

I had a nice selection of media watched tonight. I began with "Snakes," the last CSI episode on the disc in the set I had skipped. Weird couple of cases and very interesting ones.

Then, I plucked QUEEN CHRISTINA off the shelf. It was one of the Garbo films I skipped from that boxed set because I had the laserdisc that I had watched many, many times.

The DVD really varied in quality. Some of it looked silky and wonderful. Some of it looked overly grainy. There were too many small scratches throughout the film. This was not a high quality print they used for this transfer. Because the film is quite old, I guess it's the best they could find, but if so, that's pretty disappointing that it's ever going to look any better than this.

At some point, I should take out the laser and watch selected scenes to see if those scratches are on it. I sure don't remember it having so much smal damage on the sides of the frame.

COLD CASE had a new episode tonight that dealt with a case only five years old, so all the actors could play themselves in the past and present. Veronica Cartwright guest starred, and this is like the third or fourth guest star role I've seen her in during the new year.

During commercials, I flipped around the cable guide to see if anything was coming on at 9 on any of the pay cable channel.

Sure enough, Starz was debuting SIN CITY tonight. I didn't see it in the theater, so I was anxious to see this much talked about graphic novel brought to the screen. Very true to graphic novels and the hyper-violence present in this particular series. Beautifully realized art direction and photography give it a most unique look and flavor. And all star cast certainly got with the film's point of view and played it for all it was worth.

Not really my cup of tea film-wise, but for an experiment in tone, texture, and atmosphere, it pretty much scored a bull's eye with its goals.

And I understand a special edition was released on DVD at Christmas that allows the user to place the episodes in whatever order he'd like to view them (in addition to having more footage on view. At just over 2 hours, there was all I wanted to see already there).

Now my turn to agree with you, MattH. For what it was trying to do (not really my thing either) SIN CITY was on the mark. Some memorable moments. And Mickey Rourke was quite good.

THat feeling is always nice... I was preparing on donating some old smithsonianis and national geographics to the local nursing home

DR Jennifer I agree with you about getting rid of LR... I rather enjoyed her.

I am looking forward to seeing the vancouver olympics. It is a beautiful city... Is she still skating

Last post at 9:48 and no one in the jernt.  You WUSSBURGERS are driving dear readers off the site because they have no one to converse with, and were all about the conversing, baby.  Guess I won't be in a hurry to write the new notes - I'll get to them when I get to them.
