Title: FEELING MY OATS
Post by: bk on March 08, 2006, 12:06:11 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you were weirdly chipper and weirdly elated reading the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're feeling their collective oats right now, then they'll eat some hay, then they'll come home.  At least that's what they told me.

How pathetic is this?

I signed off at 12:27...and here I am again more than three hours later...and posting the "next" post.

Sigh.

Why am I up at this unholy hour, you may well ask yourself.

I know I've asked myself.

And I've answered.  Oh, yes!

I've answered.

You betcha!
Title: Re:FEELING MY OATS

It's because...at some point yesterday, I became "super-congested."

That's right.  Congested beyond my capacity to decongest.

As in so congested I could feel the pressure building and building...and releasing.

So congested that I could put out a medium-sized fire with one sneeze.

I figure it was something in the air.

Yes.  That's it.

After being relatively free of such inconveniences, the great mucous demon entered my body and began to wreak havoc.

Oh, yes...havoc has been wreaked.

I've blown my nose until both sides of it are raw and burning.

I've taken decongestants, and the demon within laughs snottily at my efforts.

Haw-haw-haw-haw-haw, it snorts.

And here I sniffle.

So.  I am up...and I've desperately sought something stronger than the decongestants I took a few hours ago.

And I think I found something...yes, something almost double the strength.

It's Thera-Flu.

The catch is, I have no flu-like symptoms save this demonic sinusy-mucousy-you-know-the-drill thingy plaguing me.

Good morning, Larry.  I see you lurking there reading the posts from last night.

If you get here, know that I said "How do."

And once again, "Adieu."

Good morning, all!  Hello, DR RonPulliam, I'm catching up on last night's posts and listening to the music files Rodney Gilfry sent me. He's got a beautiful voice, and I'm enjoying his cabaret act.

I spent 9 hours yesterday rewriting, rethinking, and reshaping my notes on the Toyland edition, and I have yet to do the same thing with my critical notes.  But not today; I have a trek to the office, the NYPL, the pharmacist, and an inventory of msic paper in case I need to order any before starting the Men's Chorus orchestrations.

TOD:  I hate UPS, give me Fed Ex any day, although this new Fed Ex "home delivery" Tuesday-Saturday schedule is ridiculous and impossible since Fed Ex's left hand knoweth not wot its left foot is up to.

I will sashay off to work after saying good morning to Larry!

The next time you're downtown (besides today) let me know and I'll tell Anthony (he's off at an audition this morning anyway). He's salavating at the idea of looking at pictures from 1905. I think he's an old man in a young man's body.

Off to Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

In other news...

I'm currently soaking my right foot in a basin of warm water.  I have a callous.  It hurts.  What's weird is that I've had callouses before - actually, I've have had this one before - it's recurring - but it's never really hurt before.  So...

I hurt, therefore I soak.

A young man goes into a pharmacy and asks the pharmacist: Hello, could you give me a condom. My girlfriend has invited me for dinner and I think she is expecting something from me!"

The pharmacist gives him the condom; and as the young man is going out, he returns and tells him: "Give me another condom because my girlfriend's sister is very cute too. She always crosses her legs in a provocative manner when she sees me and I think she expects something from me too."

The pharmacist gives him a second condom; and as the boy is leaving he turns back and says "After all, give me one more condom because my girlfriend's mom is still pretty cute, and when she sees me she always makes allusions...and since she invited me for dinner, I think she is expecting something from me!!"

During dinner, the young man is sitting with his girlfriend on his left, the sister on his right and the mom facing him. When the dad gets there, the boy lowers his head and starts praying: "Dear Lord, bless this dinner... thank you for all you give us...!!!"

A minute later the boy is still praying: "Thank you Lord for your kindness..."

Ten minutes, and the boy is still praying, keeping his head down.

The others look at each other surprised and his girlfriend even more than the others. She gets close to the boy and whispers in his ear: "I didn't know you were so religious!!!"

The boy replies:" I didn't know your dad was a pharmacist!!!"

DR George!

Congratulations on getting the GOLDEN BOY recordings, especially the one with the program. What a find!

Now, when I've had warped records like that, I've put them between heavy books on bottom and top and let them sit for a week or more. I even did that to a laserdisc once, too, and I've always gotten them back into playable condition.

Well, I like Ayla. I like her voice and her personality, but I know she isn't going to win it all. Would like to see her hang around a few more weeks.

I was astonished, however, when Simon asked her her age last night and she replied "17." If I ever knew she was that young, I had forgotten, and she certainly did look much, much older last night. The fact that she's extremely tall makes her seem more mature as well.

I still think Mandisa is the lady to beat.

We do! A lot!!  :D

But as an actor, I have to experiment with dialects and accents all the time. I've never done an entire play with a Brooklyn/Bronx accent, but I did use it with the lead-in dialogue and throughout the "Mr. Cellophane" song in AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND. That was the director's choice for me to do it.

Yes, I'm up.  I managed to dress and drive to work.

Bedraggled, sleep-deprived and somewhat decongested.

The Thera-Flu worked well.  On my way to work this a.m., I stopped and bought some Sudafed...turns out I was taking tablets that had the minimum allowable decongestant medicine in them.  The stuff I bought this morning is three times as potent.

The Thera-Flu decongestant ingredient was also three times the potency of my regular tablet.  So...THAT's how bad it was.

I have had that kind of a congested nose and head in a long, long time, but I do remember how miserable it is to try to endure it especially while trying to sleep.

Hope things improve or at least that the more potent medicine helps some.

Hi everyone.

Well, I think I understand "Don't Push It" now.

The cab didn't come and pick me up until ten minutes before my doctor appointment.  I was several minutes late but since they make you sit almost a half hour before the doctor sees you it was ok.

I got a very good bill of health.  Let me just say that if you don’t like the way I drive, get off the sidewalk!   ;)

I was happy and bouncy, felt GREAT and spoke to the doctor about going back to work on the 20th.   He said we’ll see and wants to see me again next Friday.  He mentioned that most people take the full 6-8 weeks off.  I would be going back after only 3.

It took over an hour to get a cab home.  In the mean time I called my boss and told her I might be coming back early.  She wasn’t so sure.

When I got home and finished telling Mom everything the doctor said, I told her I was going to go into the living room and make a few phone calls.  I sat down for a few minutes to collect my thoughts and all of a sudden it felt like everything was draining out me.  I got soooo tired.  The more I tried to fight it, the more tired I got.

So instead of making any calls, I went in and lay down.   I slept all the way to this morning.

This morning, I made myself a cup of tea and had a honey bun with it.   As soon as I finished, felt like I wanted to hurl.  And I don’t feel all that good right now.

I can’t believe that going out just that little while could throw me so badly.  I think I shall be rethinking going back to work so soon.   :-\

No, he hasn't changed. They had better nights last night that the other girls, so he was kinder to them.

Two previous singers he both told to go ahead and book their airplane tickets home.

Actually, Simon isn't the real problem with the judges.  The REAL problem is Paula...she has nothing to say...parrots Randy's comments...and makes no worthwhile input to any of the singers other than:  "You look really nice tonight.  I just LOVE the tone of your voice.  You've always made me think you have talent."

What utter trivial rot.

The BEST judging came the night Paula sat in the first chair...forced to actually "say" something, she found herself having to make judgment calls rather than being a buffer.

This year, more than any other, I've found myself not only agreeing with Simon, for the most pat, but also finding no fault in his word choices.

After beating out tens of thousands of other wannabes, these finalists ought to be knocking our socks off.  Instead, the majority are boring me to tears.

Yesterday my SONDHEIM CELEBRATION AT CARNEGIE HALL video arrived and I watched it last night.

Enjoyed most of it - not ALL of it....  I like the songs from DICK TRACY, but there are others that MIGHT have been featured.

I thought Madelaine Kahn's version of I'M NOT GETTING MARRIED wasn't so hot, but she looked beautiful....it's NOT a comedy song as far as I'm concerned....it's a desperation/want song....

BUT - Miss Dorothy Loudon doing LOSING MY MIND/YOU COULD DRIVE A PERSON CRAZY (discussed here at HHW IIRC) - was devastating and the highlight of the evening for me, although Glenn Close singing SEND IN THE CLOWNS dressed all in red was also very touching.

More re: last night's IDOL.

Re: Ayla.

I thought she was 18 or 19 since she said she was going to college soon. Here we go at 19. But I guess in the US you go earlier.

Anyhow I think she is okay. But her personality doesn't really capture me, and I think she is good because she puts work into it, not because she is overly talented. And I want the winner to be really talented, not merely someone who tries really hard.  But that said, she has been better than I thought she would be. But still, she doesn't really do anything for me.

DR MattH said that Mandissa is the one to beat for the women.  I'm just not sure.  She doesn't appeal to me the way someone like Kellie does. But she is talented. I think her success in this competition depends on what the judges say about her. If they continue to praise her that much, then i think she will go far.  But i'm just not so sure that America will love her.

Right now my favorites are Kellie and Katharine.  I do still like paris, but she doesn't seem as real to me as the two girls i mentioned. I just love kellie and katharine. They seem so genunie and have such nice personalities. It makes me just like them.

Hey, no comments on last night's TAR???

AMAZING RACE SPOILERS FROM LAST NIGHT'S SHOW.

.
.
.

.
.
.

I must say I am LOVING this edition.  It's interesting how the same teams that finished in the last places last week finished in the last places this week (even with the bunching).

I was not sorry to see the sisters go.  They really just did not have what it takes. And while I'm not a huge fan of the old people, I was happy they weren't forced to leave because of their car. I will be very interested to see how long it took for their replacement to arrive. Hopefully less than 30 minutes. BUt i'm doubtful since it was so dark. That seems so unfair.

I'm liking the slightly obnoxious ken dolls. They are hilarious.  And I like monica and joseph (i think those are their names). Last week i called them barbie and ken cause she is blonde and he is dark. They seem really sweet. I think they will go far. And I still like the dating nerds.

Does anyone know how the new show The Unit did? I am just hoping they switch TAR back to 9pm.

And the word of the day is: SASHAY!
Ah, yes, the typical start of an instructions sheet from der Mommy's interior decorator.  "Please pull sash A through curtain rod B," that kind of nonsense.  No indication of picking out fabrics, working out color schemes, not a whit.  The instructions proceed directly to putting things together.  Well, at least Mommy is pleased, personally I think it all looks like hell.

I'd read (years ago) that you could put records between panes of glass and put them in the sun for a little while to flatten them, but I've never done that.  I don't know if I have two books big enough (and flat enough) to effectively flatten an album, though.

AMAZIN' RACE SPOILERS  ***************************************

DR Jennifer, I more than agree that the Glamazons had to go, with the old folks to follow next week.  With the frat boys and the hippies being so far ahead of the pack in the two legs so far, it seems that the last half hour of the show turns into a waiting game for these laggers to just catch up to the final task before the pitstop.  I think once the old folks are gone the general pace of the show will pick up throughout the whole hour.

I think my favorite team is the nerds.  They are so straightforward and comfortable with each other and it's clear that they are enjoying every second of the race.  I haven't been won over yet by the frat boys or the hippies, and I'm on the fence over MoJo.

DR GEORGE  - what DRMATTH says about albums really can work....I always use the Encyclopoedia Britannica....several volumes place on the LP one at a time for a week or so....then check it and see if it needs more.  Those Capital albums are advertised as "unbreakable" on the LP cover, I think....

I don't think this is one of those "unbreakable" LPs, but I'll try it.  But then right after I realized what I got, I did get another one on eBay. ::) So now I'll have two stereo LPs. ;)

Good Afternoon!

I decided to "escape" from the basement here.  Just needed a change of scene.  I like the basement, but just been spending too much time down there the past couple of days.  But, again, it has been nice "embracing" my "between gig" status.

I also needed some lunch. :)  I even got showered, shaved and dressed even though I don't have any real plans for today.

And my foot does feel better, but I'm not sure what the right course of action is right now: Do I try to keep any weight off it? or do I go ahead as "normal"?

I prefer to talk over the phone, you get things resolved faster and people don't get insulted by reading a "tone" into your email that was never intended.

On the other hand, I almost always follow up a phone converssation witha email cnfirmation of what was said so I can print it out and keep a written record. Who said law work wasn't redundant?

Seriously...

It all depends on the situation.  The one thing about e-mail and faxes is that you can see the "writing" in advance.  And then once all the fine print it reviewed, then any issues and negotiations can be taken care of in person, either face-to-face or over the phone.

However...  I don't like contract negotiations at all.  Talking money has never been comfortable for me.  Thankfully, with most union gigs, the scale/pay is already pre-determined by the union and the theatre/producer.  I don't have to negotiate anything - just pick up my check each Thurdsay.

In the cases where I've had to negotiate, I always prefer for "them" to give me a figure first rather than having them ask me for what I want.  I usually end up under-selling myself - at least that's what I've been told.  Heck, as long as it's over minimum wage...

I also get very uncomfortable when I'm dealing with actors who aren't yet established - i.e. they have day jobs.   Some people have seemed shocked that my rates are so reasonable.  My general rule of thumb is: If I know you can afford "it", then I will bill you accordingly.  Otherwise, I'm there to help you further your career not to empty your bank account.

And then there's the ultimate uncomfortable situation... Talking money with your parents.  :-\

And when it comes to non-money related issues...

I've found I get the most satisfaction out of face-to-face meetings.  Yes, they may initially be the most uncomfortable situations, but, in the end, having the person right there in front of you is always the best.  Even if the conclusion is not a happy resolution.

Began the afternoon's viewing with a FIREFLY episode. I have now gotten to the part of the boxed set with episodes that either never aired or that I didn't get a chance to see before the show was taken off the air. Excellent episode.

This one also featured running commentary with stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyck, so after I watched the show, I replayed it to hear their comments. Hearing them loving their own show and co-stars so much was really great, and I can imagine how unhappy they must have been to break up their merry band so early when Fox pulled the plug on the show.

Next up was the forgettable JOEY. I'm sure the show won't be renewed for another season, so since I've come this far with it, I'll continue to watch, but it's SO obvious the writers are floundering at this point not knowing what direction to send the show. For a character I loved so much on FRIENDS, it's pretty depressing to see him in something so much less in quality than the former show.

That said, there was one running gag with an Joey action figure (the character Joey has just made a big action movie) that was reasonably funny. None of the plots worked last night at all, I didn't think.

SCRUBS had a pretty good episode featuring the usual mix of slapstick and pathos. No word yet whether NBC will pick this show up for another season, but on the basis of quality writing, it certainly deserves another season.

And I loved THE CLOSER this week as well. Maybe not quite as much as last week's episode (which I still will rank as my favorite of the run thus far), but the characters are all so interesting and the fellows in the squad room have pretty much come around to a respect for this Southern deputy chief. Now they can work much more as a team to solve these cases.

Not counting more recent movies, do you have a movie score that stands out to you as utterly inappropriate? In other words, the music does not match the images at all. What is your most egregious example of this?

One nice thing about the lack of totally new programming on tonight is that I can make a serious dent in the rest of the things that are being stored on the DVR. Apart from GET BRUCE! which I still have a half hour of to watch, I still have THE SINGING DETECTIVE that I've never gotten to. With my not recording anything tonight and apparently the HARRY POTTER movie from Amazon nowhere in sight for me, I may actually get to the Robert Downey Jr. movie tomorrow.

Hi Everyone, I made it through the job fair! It went pretty well, although I feel it was a bit disorganized- and a fellow stipend intern told me she had received an email from our group leader saying that we didn't need to be there, that we would hand in our resumes and coordinate interviews through her.  I didn't get any such email, but I don't doubt that it was sent, that's just the way things work there sometimes. Anyway, the "mini interview" portion at the end of the hour went really well.  I have no idea whether I actually needed to be there or not, but it was good practice, and I suppose it's good to get as many different feet in the door in as many different ways as possible.

Do people here prefer to discuss business by email or phone?

People where?  In LA?  On haineshisway.com?  In NY?  I'm finding everyone in LA would rather deal via e-mail - weird

Well... It looks like I may be helping my parents out with a special project/search tomorrow so...  Friday at the latest.  I want to be back up for the final run-thrus in the rehearsal hall for Lestat.

I know, I know... Excuses, excuses...  But I'm booked all next week for various projects - besides Lestat.  So, once I'm back, I'm back.

Question for Ask BK and Ask DR Day....

Since I'm currently watching "Oprah", and she's showing clips from interviews of inter-racial couples in conjunction with the new movie, "Something New"... Who seem to be sharing some intimate details of their relationships...

Would you, could you ever go on a talk show and share the details of your personal life and relationships?  On national TV?

Depends what they were asking - I obviously wouldn't share names, dates, places - but perhaps an overview of things.

Question for BK-

Not counting more recent movies, do you have a movie score that stands out to you as utterly inappropriate? In other words, the music does not match the images at all. What is your most egregious example of this?

Ryan's Daughter comes to mind.  Some of the original Amfitheatrof score to Major Dundee comes to mind.

Maybe a stop in Chinatown might help.  I'm sure there's some specially formulated tea to help ease your unease.  -I still use a boxed tea - comes in a green and white container - that was recommended to me a couple of years ago.  Always seems to work for me when everything else hasn't.

I won't bother asking our East coasters, I will simply assume that Jose knows all of them.   ;D

Good Evening!

OMG!

Well...  My parents have started looking for a new house, a place to retire.  They headed out today, and just got back.  And they're very excited about the places they looked at today...  In Richmond, VA!  -Which was my homebase until last March.

Of course, it was I who half-jokingly suggested they look down there since property values and taxes aren't as obscenely high as they are in NoVA, but I didn't think they'd fall in love at first sight.  We shall see...

Well... The last time my parents went looking for a house - and they weren't even looking for themselve, but for my brother - they found the house they're currently in.  They saw it on a Sunday, and signed the paperwork by the end the week.  "Guess what?  We're moving!"

I'm just amazed that my parents are finally considering retirement.  However, it is nice to know that they are looking forward to doing a lot of things that they haven't had the chance to do.  And if they get what they think they can get for this house, then they should both be set up rather well for years to come.  -Especially if they end up in Richmond.  They found that the same house - square footage -  design by the same developer costs about about $150,000 less in Richmond than up here in the DC area.  Again, we'll see what happens.

Alas, they did comment that "You'll have always have a place to live," was not what I wanted to hear from them.  But I know it comes out of love and concern.  Maybe once Lestat gets past opening night they'll realize I'm in this for the long run.  And, hopefully, Lestat, will have a long run.

As for AMERICAN IDOL contestants - - - - -

My favorite tonight was again Elliott who sang a sincere, heartfelt ballad that wasn't as showy as last week but I liked just as much.

Ace did "Butterflies" in part chest but lots of very strong falsetto that he managed to control very nicely. Unlike Shay who tried falsetto for most of a song three weeks ago, Ace's voice didn't give out and it stayed on pitch. Not my favorite song by a mile but I was impressed with his versatility.

Taylor won the audience over, and I liked Gedeon's "When a Man Loves a Woman" though the judges didn't.

Will's plastic pop rendition of "How Sweet It Is" didn't show off much of his voice, and Kevin did a simple rendition of "Vincent" which Clay Aiken struggled with three years ago because it was handed him at the last minute.

I put in a bunch of calls for Elliott and I got through 95% of the time. I don't know what that means especially since Taylor's line was pretty busy the whole night.

One of my favorite musical themes from a merely-pretty-good movie is the theme for VIVA MAX.  I keep thinking it's a flawed enough film with an intriguing premise (a general tries to recapture the Alamo to impress a woman) that it might make a good musical, but when people watch the film with that in mind, they just don't see it.

There was a lightning flash practically right above my house and then thunder and my power blinked.  My computer restarted and I had to start it all up again.  It's been a long time since I've seen lightning in this area.

That is unusual for your part of the country.

Was just reading the sources cited of this dissertation that the UND had received as a gift from the man wh did it as part of his doctoral work at USC.

I am suspecting that USC also must have a sizeable film collection. I knew UCLA did but from what I am gathering USC must also have a sizeable on.

Couple of other libraries that have sizeable telly collections outside of the Museum of Television and they are the Library of Popular Culture are Bowling Green and the other is the University of Wisconsin at Madison...

For those who are sci fi fans, the Library of Popular culture has one of the largest collections of science fiction.

Well, it seems to have stopped raining and thundering and lightning.  Earlier this evening, there was a minute or two of a light snow!
