Title: BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH

Well, you've read the notes, you are now bewaring any residual Ides which may be in the ether, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just trying to figure out what a fershluganah Ide is.

Very Happy Birthday Wishes to BK's very own bdapp, Miss Barbara Deutsch!!

Probably my least favorite "classic" musical:  Camelot. :P

I did this show here in Olympia in 1991 and had a wonderful time doing it.  It was a great experience...wonderful costumes, sets and props; very good actors; incredible singers; fabulous and friendly director; etc.  I made some friends during the show that are still some of my closest friends.  But the show itself just grates me the wrong way...I hate it when that happens.

It's the only show (that I can think of) that I didn't like after I did a production of it.  There have been other shows that I didn't know (Brigadoon) or really didn't like (Peter Pan) before I did them, and then when I performed in them, I ended up liking the shows, but not (as we used to call it) Camelsnot. ;)

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...  And that's a good thing.  I'm really trying to gear up for next week's Lestat orchestra rehearsals which will be starting at 9:00am... Which means I have to be on the subway by 8:15... Which means I have to be up by 7:30... So...  After having the luxury of getting to sleep in until 10:00 (or later), I just need to adjust my body-clock accordingly.  But as I said...

I'm up.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I don't dislike the scores in toto, but there are a couple of selections from both Oklahoma and Carousel that I wouldn't mind being snipped.  However, I have a feeling my less than enthusiastic feelings may have something to do with some less than spectacular productions I've seen of both shows.

Otherwise, I've never really cared for Annie.

As for Flops with Great Scores:
Rags
The Baker's Wife

I'm sure more titles will come to mind as the day goes on.  Or I'll be "reminded" of them.  ;)

Good morning, al!  I can't believe it's nearly 9 am and there are so few posts!  I have indeed been a Wussburger this morning, but where are my am cohorts?

I have to ponder a paragraph in my introduction to the Toyland notes which will consume a bit of time today.  It's about the restoration problems of setting the musical program for a show that was a fluid, constantly changing item since its origin; how does one settle what is in and what is out and why.  Oy!  I'm not sure I need the paragraph, but a reader I respect gave me this suggestion so I want to see how far I can run with it.

I also need to hit the bank with a lovely deposit and set an afternoon date to see TRISTRAM SHANDY, which I quite look forward to.

In other news...

I believe I finally know what a pulled groin muscle feels like.  And I told him that it felt fine to me.

<ba-doom chick>

However...  I believe that some of the compensating I was doing due the callous on my right foot has caused me to strain some other muscles.  I'm still mobile, but I'm aching where I've not ached before.  I'm gonna give it a day to see how things progress, and then if I need to see a doctor tomorrow...

But, I'm OK, and just thankful that I sit down for a living.

Another link, for those who appreciate fine art (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-kinkade9mar09,0,5605083.story?coll=la-home-headlines).

Excerpt:

Quote
In sworn testimony and interviews with The Times, some ex-dealers have accused Kinkade — whose dreamily inspirational limited-edition prints are steeped in Christian-oriented themes of faith and family values — of ruining them financially while enriching himself and his business associates.

They and others also described incidents in which an allegedly drunken Kinkade heckled illusionists Siegfried and Roy; cursed a former employee's wife who came to his side when he fell off a barstool; fondled a startled woman's breasts at a signing party; and urinated on a Winnie the Pooh figure at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.

Just to get your curiosity going.

...But first some e-mails and phone calls...

OH!

BK - "The Stepfather" is one of those movies that I would always find myself watching all the way through whenever it came on HBO.  I haven't seen it in a couple of years, but it really is a nice thriller.  And I do remember that cheesy score.  Ah, well... At least you get Terry Quinn's beautiful - if sinister - eyes.  And that one sex scene has always seemed slightly gratuitous, but I guess it does serve it's purpose.

Alas, "Stepfather 2: Make Room For Daddy" ("Tonight - Daddy's Coming Home - To Slice Up More Than Just The Cake!) and the made for TV "Stepfather 3" ("Daddy's been working in the garden... again!") truly pale in comparison to the original.  And just how did Daddy make it from the wood-chipper to the insane asylum?  And, since Terry Quinn was smart enough to say, "No," to #3, the writers rolled out that wonderful device of a plastic surgeon.

Looks like NBC had a change of heart and decided to schedule reruns tonight instead of new episodes. TV GUIDE lists all new episodes of WILL & GRACE, MY NAME IS EARL, and THE OFFICE, but this morning's newspaper listed an hour of WILL & GRACE reruns (favorite episodes from previous seasons; "Das Boob" is one of the classics), and EARL and OFFICE repeats.

So, looks like CBS' slate of new episodes for its lineup will win tonight handily.

I don't think there has been any change at all to the 1956 version in this edition. The only reason to buy it is to get the silent version as a bonus feature.

I won't be buying this film again. I don't watch it often enough to warrant the new purchase. Maybe years from now when a high def version is available, I may reconsider, but not now.

I just don't know how you can call Second Act Trouble Suskin's book - it actually says Steven Suskin instead of compiled by Steven Suskin or edited by Steven Suskin.  He actually only "wrote" about ten percent of the book.

For a giggle, I offer Amazon.com's synopsis for the upcoming DVD release of "Gold Diggers of 1933":

"Barneny Hopkins is producing a new show on Broadway, but the day before it opens, the set and costumes are confiscated due to not paid bills. Everybody is sitting on the street and due to depression there is no possibility for the three chorus girls Carol, Trixie and Polly. But they hear rumors, that Hopkins is producing a new show, they invite him and he promises to give them work - when he found a backer to produce it. He hears the tunes of the composer next door, Brad Roberts, Pollys friend. Brad joins them and is backing the show. On opening night he takes over for the juvenile lead, who suffers from lumbago. Roberts has been very puplicity-shy, because he belongs to a wealthy upperclass family from Boston. When his family notices what he is doing, his brother Lawrence and their attorney Peabody come to New York, to end his relation with Polly. But he mistakes Carol for Polly, who does not correct his mistake. Lawrence decides to separate Polly from Brad by drawing her love on himself. But soon he realizes, that he is really in love with that chorus girl."

My favorite sentence is underlined above.  All my young adult life, I wanted to take over the lead from an actor who suffered from lumbago.

It was my aspiration...my all...my everything.

And yet...I've never been within 100 miles of a lumbago clinic!

(There are obvious typos in the synopsis.  Oddly enough. Amazon PAYS someone to write them...and the other synopses (synopsi?) for the "other" DVDs in the upcoming Busby Berkeley box are even worse...side-splittingly so).

Last night's "American Idol""

What can I say?  I think Gedeon, Kevin and Will are in the bottom three, although I'd like to see Will stick around.

Elliot, Chris, Ace, Taylor and Bucky were really good last night.  REALLY good.

I didn't much care for any of the song choices, including Taylor's -- how quick the judges are to condemn a singer for taking a song too closely associated with another singer...and yet they didn't have a problem with Taylor's sounding like Michael McDonald singing the song he made famous.  Who needs mimicry?????  They did the same thing with Ruben, praising his copycat renditions of standards while chastising others for singing songs too closely associated with other performers...and sometimes taking a dig at them for trying to sound like the original.

Oh, well....

That's a real problem with 80s cinema. A lot of that synth stuff does not age well. And it is possible for a synth score to age well, but the 80s brought a lot of compression and cheesy rhythm machines and keyboard voices that just can't be taken seriously.

In the I DON'T BELIEVE IT department:

Local weather forecast sez that measurable SNOW fall at sea level MAY OCCUR tonight and tomorrow night.  A weird convergence of moisture and cold air -- much colder than normal -- is headed our way this evening.

Meteorologists are expecting temps to be 15 degrees below norm...and norm is in the mid-40s at night here.

So....The Bay Area could get  its first sea-level snowfall in AEONS.

From the internet:

The Ides of March
Just one of a dozen Ides that occur every month of the year

by Borgna Brunner

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as Caesar knew, the Ides were just another day.
The soothsayer's warning to Julius Caesar, "Beware the Ides of March," has forever imbued that date with a sense of foreboding. But in Roman times the expression "Ides of March" did not necessarily evoke a dark mood—it was simply the standard way of saying "March 15." Surely such a fanciful expression must signify something more than merely another day of the year? Not so. Even in Shakespeare's time, sixteen centuries later, audiences attending his play Julius Caesar wouldn't have blinked twice upon hearing the date called the Ides.

The term Ides comes from the earliest Roman calendar, which is said to have been devised by Romulus, the mythical founder of Rome. Whether it was Romulus or not, the inventor of this calendar had a penchant for complexity. The Roman calendar organized its months around three days, each of which served as a reference point for counting the other days:

Kalends (1st day of the month)
Nones (the 7th day in March, May, July, and October; the 5th in the other months)
Ides (the 15th day in March, May, July, and October; the 13th in the other months)
The remaining, unnamed days of the month were identified by counting backwards from the Kalends, Nones, or the Ides. For example, March 3 would be V Nones—5 days before the Nones (the Roman method of counting days was inclusive; in other words, the Nones would be counted as one of the 5 days).

Days in March

March 1: Kalends; March 2: VI Nones; March 3: V Nones; March 4: IV Nones; March 5: III Nones; March 6: Pridie Nones (Latin for "on the day before"); March 7: Nones; March 15: Ides

Used in the first Roman calendar as well as in the Julian calendar (established by Julius Caesar in 45 B.C.E.) the confusing system of Kalends, Nones, and Ides continued to be used to varying degrees throughout the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance.

So, the Ides of March is just one of a dozen Ides that occur every month of the year. Kalends, the word from which calendar is derived, is another exotic-sounding term with a mundane meaning. Kalendrium means account book in Latin: Kalend, the first of the month, was in Roman times as it is now, the date on which bills are due.

My thoughts on last night's IDOL.

I really didn't love most of the performances.  And I"m not sure who will go home tonight.  It's hard to predict, especially when the judges sometimes lobby certain performers, who I suspect the public might not otherwise vote for.

I did like Ace, although not the beginning too much.  All that high stuff was too high for me. But obviously he will sail through.  He is the one of the men who looks most like a typical pop star.

I didn't care for Chris as much as I normally have.   But was anybody else stunned to see what he used to look like before he shaved his head. OMG!  He was really hot.

I don't care for Gedeon at all. But the judges praise will probably keep him around.  While the judges' brutal attack on Will will most assuredly mean he is bottom 3.

I actually liked Kevin better last night than i have before. He was just so sweet and sincere.  I think he might not only have grannies voting for him, but also a bunch of little girls.

Another one I'm just not crazy about is bucky.

I think with what the judges said, anybody could be in the bottom (well not ace and chris).  But you never know even about someone like elliot. They were very harsh on him.  And i'm not even sure how many fans he has.

Though I have some scenes with the lovely Debbie Rochon that were pleasant to film in Times Square and Central Park, I'm guessing she would no more remember me than the man in the moon. That girl does like a dozen low-budget horror movies every year.

Her imdb bio lists fifteen for 2005 alone.

Hits whose scores I have no use for:
WICKED, CATS, CAROUSEL, LION KING

Flops I can use:
GREENWILLOW, JAMES JOYCE'S THE DEAD, DARLING OF THE DAY

Putting CAROUSEL into the list you did is an insult to composition, Richard Rodgers and God, I tell you!

I just finished my new section for the editorial notes on Toyland, and here's what I wrote:

The popular musical theatre is a commercial venture; the show is produced to  entertain an audience, and, by maintaining that audience, to provide its creators and investors with a nice bundle of cash.  Because of its need to please an audience, the show is a fluid entity, constantly in flux,  reshaping itself by whatever means it can employ to bring in the crowds.  In previews, the show is under close scrutiny as it plays to an audience: dull spots, poor jokes, and inept performances are all reasons for immediate cuts,  rewrites, and cast replacements.  Much of this can be seen by the creators in performance with an audience, but the reviewers' opinions are equally important in determining what does and does not work.

It was imperative that the show be fixed well enough to attempt a New York run of performances since it was this "New York hit" billing, true or false, that kept the show touring the country for years, and this tour, if successful, was the primary source of income from the piece.  If the show had been a major success in New York, first-class and second-class tours could take to the road and do even better: the Shuberts' Sigmund Romberg hit BLOSSOM TIME toured for years until it became a joke.  Once the show opened in New York, if it were a hit, it was imperative to keep the publicity machinery running and the audiences returning.  Often a cast replacement meant a new number and a bit of publicity.  In one of Townsend Walsh's scrapbooks, an anonymous and undated newspaper clipping has a photo of Bessie Wynn with the announcement that she has a new number, "Our Castle In Spain," in the hit BABES IN TOYLAND.  Come back and see it.

If the show were lucky, it might be picked up by a rental agency for stock and amateur performances, and Victor Herbert's publisher M. Witmark & Sons had formed the Witmark Music Library to represent the shows they published.   The shows were simplified for casting and scenic concerns and the orchestrations were standardized so that all their shows used the same orchestration, usually 5 reeds, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, percussion, harp, and strings.  Often, Herbert's concerns over how an amateur or pickup orchestra would play his music prompted the removal or simplification of the writing.  Many of his shows for the rental package lost their original overtures in favor of the popular (and published for anyone's use) concert medleys.

After touring for several years, the orchestra parts would have been recopied several times from the constant wear.  Often the part was recopied by the player or music director, accidentally replacing old copy errors with new ones: notes that had originally been cues were now accepted and played, accidentals were missed, and often bars were omitted.   After the tours shut down and the rights reverted to the authors and publisher, the original performance materials were discarded, burned, or lost in the shuffle with the costumes and scenery.

In an era before easy access to multiple copies, the chorus and actors learned their parts by rote, reading from lyric sheets, while the conductor taught the notes.  Until some of these lyric sheets turn up, the lyric for "If I Were A Man Like That" will remain incomplete.    The original chorus parts written by Victor Herbert for BABES IN TOYLAND were copied into the scores Max Hirschfeld used to teach the singers and rehearse the orchestra.  Unfortunately, a number like "Jane" had no choral writing, perhaps because it was still a solo for Jane when Herbert composed it.  By the time the show opened, it was performed by Jane, Alan, and the Piper Children, and Hirschfeld may have written harmonies for the Piper Children since they usually sing in three parts.  We also know, from a Pittsburgh review, that the song had some whistling as well, but any routining today is conjectural, based on what is known.

The loss of original orchestra parts, especially those of the original run, leaves many questions involved in a restoration of a musical theatre piece unanswered:  how were numbers routined? how many verses in a strophic number were performed? how many encores? cuts? utilitiy pieces such as scene change, entr'acte, curtain calls?  Much of this information is not provided in the rental package or any extant libretto to BABES IN TOYLAND.   Luckily, Hirschfeld's notes on his scores provide some answers.

Herbert has a note on his rescoring of "Floretta" about an Entr'Acte, but there is no date to tell when this rescoring occurred.  The rewrite employs the same paper as that used for the finales to Acts One and Two, so it's possible this rescoring occurred in Chicago, July 1903, to remove the dance to "Floretta" and shorten the number.  Since this is the only source for any information on an Entr'Acte, it was determined that a reconstruction would be impossible.  Nearly everything about a reconstruction, especially when there are no survivors connected with the original production, becomes conjectural, based on the knowledge, experience, and tastes of the person(s) recreating the piece.

TOD:  Well, it's a horse race (on a Carousel, no less), so I hope there will be no bloodied noses here.  I do recall when the question on "Opera Quiz of the Week" was "are there any great operas that you do not care for?"

Oy, did Tony Randall get letters after his honest answer:  "How can you possibly dislike The Magic Flute?  It is Mozart's greatest work."

To which Tony replied, "The question was about great operas, and I admit that is a great work.  Just not to my personal taste, which is a different thing."

So with that disclaimer out of the way, I doubt I will ruffle many feathers here when I say,

Hits:  Although I have really grown to like many of Lloyd-Weber's recent melodies, his recent scores, as musical theatre scores, leave me cold.  Otoh (on the other hand in Internet Lingo), I like all of his Tim Rice work.  Maybe it's just Tim Rice I like?

Rent, from the OBC and seeing it on Broadway:  I still just don't get it.  Although "Seasons of Love" is helpful in my Mathematics of Finance course, when I ask who knows how many minutes there are in a year.

Flops:  The usual suspects.

Flora, the Red Menace
She Loves Me
Candide
Mack and Mable
Tenderloin
Drat! The Cat!

I Can Get It for You Wholesale
and say, haven't most of Sondheim's works been, technically, flops:  Follies, Sweeney Todd, Company, Passion, Pacific Overtures,... ?

I get it...you really, really don't like him.

Oddly enough, your "judges were very harsh on him" was not what I heard at all.  If anything, Randy and Paula praised him to the skies...and Simon's comments were "constructive", simply telling Elliot that he's more a "soulful" singer and should select songs that display that quality.

Not a harsh word was uttered, that I heard.

As for his fan base, I wouldn't worry about it.  We know who we are and we know who "isn't" among us.

elmore I enjoyed your writing very much.  Could you explain to me what is meant by "rountined" and what is an "accidental"?

Sincerly,

Dear IF,
Routining is how a song is laid out in performance:  for instance, "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" in HELLO DOLLY! is routined thusly:  intro, refrain for Cornelius and Barnaby, transition, choral refrain, patter for Dolly and Ambrose, refrain, big finish.  In BIT, most of the songs are strophic: several verses and refrain, usually followed by a dance after each refrain in the orchestra score.  The routining would tell us if the dance was played after every refrain or only the last time.

The song "Jane" has a verse and refrain in the score, but there are three verses:  was it repeated three times, and how was the routine set up to involve other groups of singers?  This would only be known to some extent from what the original orchestra parts showed, such as "3 times" or pencilled notations telling us the player to repeat another chorus.  Also routining might mean how the singing was laid out:  possibly verse and refrain 1 for Jane, verse 2 for Jane and refrain 2 for Alan and Piper Children, verse 3 for encore and refrain 3 whistled.  We'll never know.

Accidentals are sharps, flats and natural signs changing pitch.

Sincerely,
Cosi Fan Tutti

DRPanni is in town Saturday April 8-April 10.

Good Afternoon!

VIBES Request:

I just got back from visiting my cousin, Richard, who's currently in the hospital with some mystery ailment.  He was admitted last Friday due to a "shutting down" of part of his lower intestine, and as of this morning, his doctors still have no real idea what's going on.  He's been going through all the usual and non-usual tests, but they have yet to provide him with an official diagnosis.  -It's a very "House"-like situation (minus the bedside-manor-free doctor).  And since he's not been able to keep any solid food down, he's been living off of Italian ices and Sprite for most of the past week.

To further complicate the situation, he is dealing with some pain.  However, if he takes the meds to alleviate his pain, then that in turns slows down his digestive system.  So, he's been testing his pain threshold over the past couple of days in order to keep things "moving" - he even opted not to take the meds last night when he went through another round of tests.  -But at least his body was 'smart', and he ended up blacking out during the procedure.

Needless to say, Richard is very frustrated, and he and his wife just want some kind of answer.  And soon.  He was hoping to get discharged this afternoon, but that's not likely.  He has another consult with a doctor this afternoon, and they'll also be bringing in a surgeon this time.

I hadn't seen Richard in a couple years - I even met his wife for the first time today -  but we practically grew up together during grade school.  My father and his father met while they were in the Coast Guard, and the families have been close ever since.  And in true Filipino fashion, since the fathers and mothers became such good friends, they children of each family have become cousins.  He's also a musician - rock bands.  Even though it was not under the best of circumstances, it was nice to be able to catch up with him this morning.  He's always been a mover and a shaker, and not one to stand still, and all the bed rest is definitely making him antsy.

I'm gonna stop by again tomorrow, and, hopefully, the mystery will be solved.

So... Vibes would be much appreciated, both for my cousin, Richard, and the staff of doctors and nurses attending to him.

Thank You.

:D

Maybe my tone did not come across properly.  But I never said I didn't like Elliot.  I do like him, and think he has a really nice voice.  He might not be my absolute favorite, but I do think he is one of the best men on IDOL.

When I mentioned that i didn't know how popular he was, I wasn't trying to be mean I was being genuine.  I do not know how many fans he has.

As for the comments by the judges, maybe i'm mixing up the comments.  But from what I remember Simon was really tough on him.  And even if Randy or paula says someone is decent, if simon says he did not like the performance, then I believe this how the people vote.

Larry, the commercial wouldn't play. I got a message about a corrupt file. Oh, well. I'll try it again later.

I am available on April 8 and 9 for a Panni party. I don't yet know about Mr. Morelli. I will check when I return home.

Like many others have already posted, I am not a fan of Mr. Weber, although I do enjoy Evita. Les Mis has some moments but otherwise I'm not a big fan. I also do not like Miss Saigon and Lion King bores me.

My big flop love, as I've mentioned ad naseum, is Pacific Overtures. I can listen to it over and over. Someone in A Tree is, IMHO, one of the most brilliant songs I have ever heard, and I don't use the word brilliant with abandon. I do like lots of shows already mentioned, such as Dear World, Merrily We Roll Along, Anyone Can Whistle, Baker's Wife, Candide and Working (another show that I adore for some unexplainable reason).

Then Will and Kevin have the most to worry about.

WEll I definitely think they should be worried, especially Will. I think Simon sent him home last night.

Although then again, sometimes if Simon comes across really mean towards someone then you get a backlash and that person stays.

Btw, I just checked out the AmericanIdol.com message boards, which i haven't done in a while.  And someone is reporting that they are announcing that America will be surprised by 2 of those voted out.  Some supposedly accurate survey system said lisa, konnik, gedeon, will.  I wonder how close that will be (although i think konnik and will are no brainers after how they did).

That's why the guild instituted the rule that now only 10,000 writers can be credited for any one screenplay.

Please add my best wishes to the chorus of vibes, xylophones, celesta and triangles  to DR Jose's DC (Dear Cousin) Richard.

It seems to my un-medically educated self that they could easily bypass the affected area of the lower intestine...we have a whole lot of that stuff, as I recall, and portions can be removed when they become troublesome.

Sometimes foodstuffs get trapped in the walls of the intestines where little pockets form...and cause all kinds of trouble.  I'm betting something like that might have happened, although I am in no way qualified to speculate.

It's just something to do.

Has anyone here ever been called a "worry wart"?

If so, do you have any idea what the etymology of the term might be and why someone began applying it to overly cautious worriers?

My take is that a wart worrier is someone who rubs on warts over and over...picking at them, rubbing at them, scraping at them...in hopes they'll go away.

Some possibly graphic medical speak coming up.

Alas, the part of his intestine that is shutting down - actually, they say it's been in spasms - is right at the end of the lower intestine, right before it "changes" into the colon.  They were - and still are, I hope - trying to find what is wrong before having to resort to surgery to what is wrong, not working, blocked, etc.  They've tested from diverticulitis, Crohn's, cancer, etc., but nothing is coming back conclusive.  The only outward physical symptom of his current condition is a very bloated, distended stomach.  Additionally, according to his blood tests, there's no sign of infection in his blood - which is the usual sign that there is some blockage in the intestine causing the "bad stuff" to seep back into the body and bloodstream.

Hopefully, those patented HHW VIBES will do their magic, and the wait for an answer will come soon(er).

Again, Thanks for the VIBES.  You're all "The Best"!

As for "Project Runway"...

I did see last night's episode and the announcement of the winner, but I was thinking last night's episode was supposed to be "Live", not "Live on tape".  The three designer finalists were making the rounds this week - "The View", "The Today Show", etc. - and I could have sworn during those appearances they were saying the announcement would be made Live.  Again, I guess I was wrong.

...And then seeing an interview this morning with the winner from the winner's home... when the winner - and the other finalists - were just in New York City yesterday for the press appearances.  Hmm...

I guess I was happy with the selection of the winner, but I also did not think any of the final three collections really stood out.  *I also think the various tasks during the course of the season do not properly prepare the finalists for the finals.  It would be nice to see at least one piece that was made during the regular season appear in the final runway  showing.  And I also believe all the previous creations should come back to "haunt them" during the final judging process too.

*Oh, but Santino did show off his Mermaid(?) dress - the one with all the large gold sequins - on "The Today Show" yesterday... Eh...

And even though this is not Ask BK/Ask DR Day, the whole "Project Runway" process prompts a question I've been meaning to ask about other reality/contest shows...

Does anyone know exactly what the penalty is if someone reveals whether they won or lost before it airs on TV?

*I'm particular amazed that the woman who beat Ken Jennings on "Jeopardy" was able to keep quiet for so long.  With that taping schedule, she probably had to stay quiet for at least a month, probably more.

**And I had an inkling of the final winner of "Project Runway" when one of the judges stopped mid-answer while being interviewed on "The Today Show" yesterday.  Oops!

I think one Survivor contestant a few years ago said something that pointed to the outcome before it was broadcast, and was immediately sued for six figures by CBS.  I think there is a non-disclosure clause in the reality contracts that call for forfeiture of any winnings or renumeration and/or responsibility to recoup for the network any loss of revenue caused by such disclosure....which would amount to millions, I would guess.    Perry Mason, Esq.

Throughly enjoyed the first section of SECOND ACT TROUBLE that dealt with THE ACT.

Perfect? Not on your life. Suskin is annotating the articles written by others with comments, corrections, additional information, etc. Odd, though, how he didn't spot the writer of THE ACT asserting that Kander, Ebb, and Minnelli all took home Oscars for the film of CABARET. Only Minnelli did. Wonder if the writer though Kander and Ebb got Oscars becasue CABARET won the musical scoring award. Ralph Burns got that award, not Kander and Ebb.

I'm about halfway through the SEESAW article. Again, some of this stuff I knew, but I've never read the actual article in question before.

Larry, I'm playing the audio right now for the commercial. It's very funny! There is no video to go along is there? I don't need any video just wondering if I'm missing more.

No, DR Ben!  Only the audio.

DRvixmom, to answer your Babes In Toyland question:  I first got involved with the show when the Houston Grand Opera hired me in 1989 to do a new musical adaptation for a holiday piece they hoped (and later abandoned faith in) would become an opera house equivalent of NUTCRACKER.  At that point I went to the Library of Congress and looked at everything in the Victor Herbert Collection, which is enormous.

After a dismal experience in Houston, which opened, and never performed the piece again after 1991, Babes amidst too much infighting and too little faith in the piece.  Losing a Great Performances broadcast because PBS waffled too long before saying yes was the coup de grace.

Several years later, I proposed the piece to John McGlinn, who looked into it, became interested in Herbert's music, and conducted a nearly complete concert performance with the St Paul Chamber Orchestra.

In 2001, the Packard Humanities Institute began an Americn Music Theatre project, which employed me and the very first thing we recorded was every piece of extant music (at that time) for ther show.  We're still waiting to release the discs.  The project was to include new editions of the Kern and Herbert shows we recorded, and I'm finishing up the work to publish a new edition of the show.  I love what I do, and I believe I do it quite well.

I'm back from TRISTRAM SHANDY, which is quite wonderful, bawdy, and outrageously funny and intelligent.  In the Sterne novel (?), which is the most unique book I've ever encountered, Uncle toby's favorite song is "Luliburlero."  In one of the film's scenes, Uncle Toby is whistling the song, which was a nice throwaway bit.  Lots of other funny bits are blithely tossed off, like the discussion of Al Pacino's MERCHANT OF VENICE.  The cast is wonderful:  Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Gillian Anderson, Roger Allam, Kieran O'Brien, Stephen Fry, and Jeremy Northam as the film's director Michael.  I recommend it highly.

I just read the very mixed to negative review of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA with Paul Sorvino. The VARIETY reviewer didn't much think Mr. Sorvino was up to the task, but did like the actress playing Cleo.

He also thought the direction was listless and the dancing generic

In other news...

I just booked six days of work over the next few weeks which all just happened to coordinate beautifully with my Lestat schedule.  When it rains it pours.  And the extra bit of financial compensation will be quite welcome after the past couple of weeks of being "between gigs".

TOTD:
I too have never really liked the scores for "Peter Pan".
"J C Superstar" is way down on my list  too.

Of the scores for flop musicals I would concur with most of those mentioned.  "Merrily" and "Overtures" are wonderful.  I'm also fond of the scores for "The Good Old Bad Old Days, "Gone With The Wind" and "The Good Companions".

IMHO "Carousel" is possibly the most beautiful score written for a musical.

She's the one that needed me to come in and pull the materials for City Opera.  This show's been my bailiwick in the Loesser office since the 1997 complete recording, with many cut numbers in the Appendix, for Jay Records.  And I went back and checked my post; I didn't mention what I did on Jan. 30 at the Loesser office.  I only remember the date since it was exactly one week after the recording of the Styne song for PS Classics.  In my advancing senility, I need signposts.

It's high on my list as well!

I could be wrong, but I suspect PETER PAN counts as a flop; it closed soon after the NBC broadcast, I believe.  This is all DR Matt H's bailiwick, not mine, but I doubt it paid itself off as a theatre run.  NBC may have helped it clear the books.

DR MBARNUM do you have any revelations or interesting bits in the Diana Darrin interview that you care to share with us?

Hmmmm....she said that her starring role in the 1961 western THE BROKEN LAND was likely the only time she would have billing above Jack Nicholson (the film was one of his early roles).

She adored Shemp Howard and the other Stooges that she worked with, and she had a 10 year affair with Carbine Williams who was the one who brought her out to California from the East Coast.

Just finished Betty White's book HERE WE GO AGAIN....written in 1996...or there abouts.  Talks about her years in television and her marraige to Allen Ludden.

She also talks about their friendship with Carol Channing and her (then) husband Charles Lowe.  When Betty did HELLO DOLLY in stock in Ohio, she greeted Carol with the news that everyone in the audience had told her it was better than the Broadway production and that Betty was wonderful....Carol deadpanned to her:  "Your mother said what?"

Had a great time watching another FIREFLY episode, one I had never seen before because Fox didn't air it. It involved a villainess from a previous episode who duped the crew and got away with it. This episode allowed them some retribution, and I loved it. Also got to see star Nathan Fillion with no clothes on, always a special treat.

Glad to see Francois back.

This has been a day or organization and taking care of business, and I must say I got quite a lot done - no writing, unfortunately, but might try some after our rehearsal tonight.  I'm also waiting to hear my muse Margaret's reaction to the three latest short stories.  And I'm still debating whether I need another one or two - right now, I think the book would run to about 200 pages (a couple of the short stories are, in fact, long stories) - seven stories.  I do have another idea or two, not fleshed out yet, but if I need to, I may just go ahead and write them and if I don't end up using them I could hold them for another time.

Then again, maybe they could just use the following recipe:

Tequila Mockingbird (http://www.cocktail.com/recipes/t/TequilaMockingbird.htm)

1/2 cup unsweetened apple cider
2 oz. tequila
2 oz. black currant-flavored liqueur (Cassis)
2 tsp. fresh lime juice
ice

Pour apple cider, tequila, black currant-flavored liqueur and lime juice over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Pour contents of cocktail shaker, including ice, into 2 old-fashioned glasses and enjoy! Serves 2.

Or THIS ONE (http://www.cocktailtimes.com/tequila/tequilamockingbird.shtml)

2 oz Tequila
1/2 oz Lemon Juice
1 tsp Creme de Menthe (white) - Glassware: Cocktail Glass

Shake both the ingredients in a shaker with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

Hmm... The first one looks interesting... And the second one kind of scares me.

DRvixmom, did you get all your questions answered today?

Oh you're back!! Yes!  I am quite intriqued to hear this after all you have been saying.  All this time I've been thinking of the Babes In Toyland with Laurel and Hardy but everything you been saying today makes it clear that I have been entirely on the wrong track all along.  Do you have any expected date for the release of your work?

Reviewed a return by someone in the office today that was a big step forward for this person as a tax preparer.  I was all set to praise her on a job well done (well, actually, I did praise her about that) but noticed that I had to break the news to her that she had to enter everything on it again, because she had simply done the whole return in the wrong year and there's no way to just transfer info.  :(

DOH!

I hate when that happens!  I had a similar experience recently with a  difficult bunch of land transfer documents ansd I put them on the wrong county forms.....grrrrr

Alas, no!  I hope we can finish up the edits by summer to present the edition to the Institute for perusal.   The recording release has been quite frustrating.

Most of us STILL do not speak English here!

It was well enough to have to say Eyes Wide Shut when buying a ticket, even though, and it's against the law here, a lot of US films do keep their title en Anglais, when exploited in France, something I find rather annoying!

You see, Les Misérables must have been so hard to say that it was transformed into Les Miz.... over there, in Bushland!! Poor Victor Hugo!

On a more serious note.  B flat -- a very serious note, indeed!  I was talking to a very old and dear friend of mine who is employed by the local county health department.  It was quite an eye-opening conversation.  They told me that everyone from the CDC down to the local health department personnel is extremely worried (to the point of being terrified) by the very very very (that is 3 verys)real possibility of an avian and pandemic flu in the very near future

This goes well beyond the usual dire forecasts that we are used to hearing and reading about.  This pandemic is very real and when it hits, it will hit so hard and so quickly that we won't have a chance to prepare ourselves.  Health departments around the country are holding military-style alerts to test the readiness of their own personnel.  From what I am told, perhaps it is time we all took these warnings a little more seriously.

I do have to add that I was proud today the Republicans also were dismayed about the Arabian firm controlling the ports.  But then I was sorry about the patriot act being signed; what are those asses thinking?  After they've come for the first round of enemies, they'll find reason with the act to start on another group, and then another.  Ugly business.

Good Evening!

Well...  THE VIBES WORKED!!!!

They ended up re-running and re-checking some tests they had run previously, and they were able to provide my cousin, Richard, with a diagnosis of colitis.

I'm not sure when he'll be able to leave the hospital, but at least they found the problem, and they didn't have to open him up to find out what it was.  I'm gonna try to stop by tomorrow morning to check in on him.  *I'm just hoping the extra days he had to spend in the hospital due to the delayed diagnosis will all be covered by his insurance.  However, in the meantime...

THANK YOU!!

Well.. I almost went there, but...

One of my most memorable French classes in college was when Mssr. Beck took the time to review the terms for the male and female genitalia.  Quite enlightening.  And if I'm remembering correctly, I believe the male genitalia are feminine gender nouns.  His theory was that the gender was determined by which sex actually owned them.

I looked it up. It ran 149 performances and closed as a hit, not because of scant business but because the NBC telecast had been agreed upon before the Broadway run. I'm sure their paying for the rights to telecast the show is what allowed it to play those relatively few performances and still close in profit.

THANK YOU!!

*I tell you, we should patent those VIBES!!!

Even though Bucky is from NC, I couldn't help but feel a little sad that Gedeon was ousted instead of Bucky. Gedeon's styl;e of singing is, of course, much more to my liking than Bucky's gravelly country rock sound. Will's elimination seemed pretty much a foregone conclusion.

I would rather have kept Ayla and let Melissa go, but she'll be gone in a week or two anyway, so it really didn't matter. Kinnik's dismissal was most deserved after this week's disastrous performance.

CSI did a change of pace episode tonight with a reality camera crew following the team around as they investigated their crime. Liked that it strayed a bit from the formula. The reality show footage was widescreen but less resolution than the usual show making it easy to tell what was being filmed for the reality show and what was the actual "live" investigation.

Among the guest stars: Jack Noseworthy.

Thank You.

I send get well vibes to Richard...

Very interesting read DR Elmore and very well written!!
