Well, you've read the notes, you know who fell on their ass and why, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they just fell on their collective asses laughing about how you-know-who fell on his.

I could always set up antoher photobucket account...

You could do that.  But also, if you find a picture on the internet that you want to use, you can right click (on a PC, I don't know about Macs) and save it somewhere on your computer.  Then when you reply to or quote a message (not in the "Quick-Reply" box at the bottom of a page), just above the "Post - Preview - Reset Form" buttons is a box that's labeled "Attach:" and a "Browse..." button.  Click "Browse" and find the picture file that you've saved, click on that file, then click "Open" and then "Post" your message.  HOWEVER you can't preview with the picture.  You can preview the text all you want but only "Attach" the picture when you're ready to "Post."  The thing that you can't do is make the picture move, like you can with a linked picture from another website.  Make sense?? :)

General comment - which I guess could be rephrased into a question!

Australians and Brits consider the use of the word "Ass" by Americans as a touch "precious". Does the word have a legitimacy in it's use as a synonym for arse or is it a colloquilism only?

Do Canadians use the term in the same way?

Good morning, all!  DRTomovoz, I hope this will help you out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arse

Today will be my first day back to the recording office, Babes, and Cinderella since Sunday.  We have now begun work on another Victor Herbert show, a version of Cinderella titled THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, which Charles Dillinghman produced in 1912 with Elsie Janis, and Montgomery & Stone.  I'm trying to learn what I can now about the 1902 WIZARD OF OZ production since Montgomery & Stone became stars playing the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow, and a lot of their 1912 material has references to Oz.  I've read the wonderful book OZ BEFORE THE RAINBOW several times, but I need to learn more about the score. Oy!

TOD: hmmmm . . .

Yesterday, after work, I went out and bought new work clothes, as the pants and shoes I've been buying so desperately needed replacing.

Today, I will show up at work wearing new pants, and new shoes, and a new t-shirt, and even new boxers!  Why, I shall practically feel like a new man!

But I intend to keep der Brucer, in spite of those feelings.

Yesterday, DearReaderLaura asked:
Quote
I have a question for the rest of the country -- when do you change your clocks? We don't do that here, so I never have to worry about it.
I rarely change my clocks, but have been known to do so when I get sick and tired of the design.

I don't thrown away the old clocks, however.  I keep them safely stored away in the basement.  (This is what is known as saving face.)

One method of making slippery walking surfaces less slippery is to sprinkle kitty litter on them.

I came by this information from some of my customers at the store.

There is no data, however, on whether the fresh-scent varieties of litter work better than the el cheapo kind.

(Feel better soon, esteemed BK.)

DR George, I read many reviews of THE ARISTOCRATS when it came out, and they were all mixed. It's a set up for a host of comedians to complete a joke any way they like and most of them make it the filthiest joke they can. It didn't sound appealing to me when I read the reviews, but I'll be interested in your take on it.

Well, tonight is the first time that I have FOUR (4) shows that I watch and greatly enjoy on at exactly the same time.

At 9 p.m. tonight I have LOST (ABC), LAW & ORDER (NBC), VERONICA MARS (UPN), and the AMERICAN IDOL results show (Fox).

LOST I will watch "live" with the over-the-air high definition signal. My DVR can record L&O and VERONICA MARS simultaneously. The VCR in the bedroom will record the 30 minute IDOL results show.

Whew!

Want to remind folks again that CBS has moved OUT OF PRACTICE and COURTING ALEX to 8-9 p.m. If you like either of these shows at all, you might want to remind yourself to catch them. If the ratings don't improve from last week's fourth place finish in the time slot, the shows will be long gone by fall.

Sorry for not posting last night, but I was having internet connection issues - the signal was being very wonky last night.  In any case...

Third preview went well.  And I felt very comfortable last night too - and we had a totally new orchestration for one song too!  Nothing like a group of musicians collectively sight-reading.  :)

The Lovely Wife and I started watching the Aristocrats while we were eating dinner  one night.  Very quickly into it we realize this was going to be gross for dinner-time fare and never went back to it.  I was very curious about the film...and get even get into gross upon occasion, but there was just something about this that I felt was going no where and after a couple comedians (Carlin, I think) had told the really foul, gross versions, I just didn't see how this could build anywhere that would actually be funny.  One of these days, I might return to it...but a warning!  This is not for the squeamish.

BK, I LOVE NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY.  But I'm just as crazy for the Kimmel-produced version of the musical No Way To Treat A Lady as well.  Very clever and funny musical.

Yes, my DVR does that, too. Of course, not everyone is fortunate enough to have these devices hence my alert.

That opening of THE CLOSER was priceless (G.W. Bailey was always one of the only bright lights in those awful POLICE ACADEMY movies, so he's been a favorite for a long time.)

Not only are TNT's broadcasts in HD, but on older LAW & ORDER episodes produced before they were filmed in high definition, they have upconverted the film, and it honestly looks as good as the more recent HD broadcasts. Amazing what technology can achieve now!

I see that those sets of classic films by Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, and Carole Lombard are coming out next week, each priced less than $20 for the set! Remarkable bargains and highly recommended!

THE NUN'S STORY, one of my all-time favorites, also comes out next week on DVD. I have watched my full frame laserdisc for many years, so I am chomping at the bit to actually get this mastered in its proper aspect ratio and enhanced for widescreened TVs.

Add BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and LIZA WITH A 'Z' to the mix, and there's a terrific amount of  great items being released next week. (And I didn't even mention MONA LISA, SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN, NARNIA, etc.)

Kelly - Boring.
Taylor - Just OK.
Katharine - "Best vocal of the night" - hmm.. ??? :-\
Paris - I liked it, I guess.
Mandisa - Sort of too "easy" for her tonight/last night.
Elliott - :)

As for "The Aristocats" - Yes, most definitely not dinner-time fair.  And I'm not exactly sure it would be library appropriate unless you monitor the age of the person checking it out.

It is a one-joke film, but it's meant to be that way.  Paul Provenza and Penn Gillette just went out and started filming different comedians doing their particular riff on the joke.  The "spirit" of the joke is the same, as is the punchline, but it's all about the journey so to speak.  Truly an adult film.

Yes, they do and for one week it affects listening to live programs on the BBC. I usually listen to Stage and Screen on BBC 3 at 11am on Monday morning. This week it was on at 10am. The same with Desmond Carrington, usually at 2pm on Tuesday but yesterday he was on at 1pm and Showtime (my little corner of the world) is on at 1pm today.

The world goes back to normal on Saturday when most of the U.S. leaps ahead.

That's better than enighbors who asked me to help them calibrate their new HDTV. I went there, and they were complaining about how they couldn't see any difference between their standard TV picture on the new HDTV. In fact, they were considering taking back the set because the picture was worse than on their old set.

Turned out, they weren't watching on the high definition channels! They thought watching the standard signal on an HDTV made it high definition! Once I showed them where the HD channels were located on the cable list (way down in the 200s; the standard channels are at the top 2-15) and got the TV calibrated correctly, we turned to a pro football game that was on ABC. They practically cried for joy over what they were seeing. (Once calibrated, even the standard channels looked better than they had been viewing, but TVs with high resolution capability point up the terrible flaws in analog signals thus the poor looking pictures. Digital sets can't expect to do much with analog signals.)

I don't think I could agree with you more!  I thought most were eminently forgettable, as songs.

FINALLY, Simon said what needed saying last week to Chris.  CHANGE IT UP, dude!  I thought Chris was horrific last night.  Don't care what proponents of the song thought...it's same-old, same-old...only an angrier more pain-inducing version.  He's the competition's Johnny One-Note.

Katherine?  What I heard was a series of flat/sharp notes wavering around in her unsteady upper register delivery.  I thought she was appalling.

I liked what Taylor said in his defense: "I wanted to sing a song tonight."  If only he had chosen a better song.

Didn't care for Paris' song choice or delivery.  And she needs to lose that fake hair...and stop dressing like she's some sort of pop princess and just dress simply.

I think Ace, Lisa and Bucky/Paris are in trouble.  There MAY be a surprise in the bottom three.  I pray it isn't Elliot, who was the most pleasing -- even if the tune didn't linger  -- vocalist of the night.

On the basis of how they performed last night, I think Lisa is the most vulnerable. Singing forgettably in the first position was not helpful to her either.

Funny about Kellie's song "Buckets of Suds." Simon claimed it to be unknown. According to Billboard, it was a #1 hit on the country chart. True, he doesn't claim to be an expert on country music, but certainly if the song was present on the IDOL list of choices, it had to be reasonably well known to SOMEONE for it to be included for choosing.

I have hated the way Paris has dressed the last few weeks. I thought she looked like Olivia Newton-John at the end of GREASE last night. Ridiculous!

However, her telephone line was constantly busy on the exchange here. I think she's got lots of fans and will be safe for awhile.

As for "Idol" offering a list of choices, I don't have a clear idea of what, if anything, the show offers in the way of an "approved" list.  Apparently, based on Simon's remark, they had thousands of songs to choose from in all genres for the last six years.  Virtually every song written, within reason, was apparently available.  Since the judges often complain about the choices made, I have my doubts that anything "approved" amounts to more than a list of songs that don't contain obscene lyrics.

Clay mentioned once in a interview that the list wasn't all that inclusive. From what I understood from him, they have a list of songs available. If the artist wants something else, the producers will attempt to clear the rights, but there's never any guarantee they'll get what they want. He found, more often than not, that it was easier to stick to their approved list.

"AI" talk continued...

"Drops of Jupiter" is actually a good song, imho.  Ace just did not sing it well at all.  Well, he did not sing well last night, period.  My roomies have saved all the AIs on the DVR, and went back a couple of weeks to contrast and compare.  Ace is definitely singing differently now - he's being coached differently and/or trying to up his competitive edge (but the in the wrong way).

*I probably would have enjoyed Chris singing "Drops of Jupiter", however.

And I wonder if the judges will go back to the tape and actually hear what came across the airwaves in Katharine's performance.  -However, she looked good last night.

Yep - It's all about getting the clearances from the record companies, publishers and artists (reps).  I have a sense that the current "list" is comprised of anything that's ever made it to the Billboard charts.  However, not all songs may get the go ahead to be performed on the broadcast.

...And I had no idea that Europe changed their clocks too.

Yes... It used to raise havoc with my dxing...

DXing is a term used by shortwave, medium wave (American AM stations), and long wave enthusiasts who search for different stations and then they send in a report that they received a signal from them. For me it was a bit more of a challenge to get the signals from some places due to the fact of living in the middle of teh North American continent. It hs been really interesting some of the neat things I have gotten over the years. Alas, in the last few years it is a practice that is not done as much as many broadcasters such as the BBC, VOA and others are opting for webcasting.

Some of the countries I got postcards, schedules or little trinkets and even a few t-shirts along the way include Peru, Australia, New Zealand, India, Indonesia, China, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Nigeria, South AFrica, Israel, Austria, Germany, France, Russia, Netherlands, Norway, Danmark,  Czechoslovakia (I received this postcard of the state broadcaster before the country broke into two distinctive countries), Italy and Switzerland.... A few pirate stations also..    These are the shortwave ones I recall..

I used to also do dxing of AM (Medium wave) stations and got some as far west as Missoula, Montana and Denver, Colorado. My furthest north stations was Winnepeg and Emerson, MB. AS far east os Detroit, MI and Louisville, KY. The furthest south station I got was Dallas, TX. The rockies prevented me from getting AM signals that were west of the rockies...

Hiya, kidz!

Well, THAT was one eventful weekend, I tell ya!

The run-through on Saturday ended just as the house opened. I was on the horn every few minutes , saying stuff like "Petur, we have to keep going..." and "you have eleven minutes until the house opens..." and "it is half hour - everyone off the stage!"

I did get about 40 minutes with the techie before the rehearsal started to program the simplest of cues. The "direktor" added a couple of blackouts-with-CD-cues, so there were three-count-'em-three spots in the show where the tech went behind the equipment and I took the light board for a simultaneous cue...

Oh! And I forgot to tell you - in order to have FULL stage lighting for the BIG dances, there are three separate, manually-operated switches BACKSTAGE, that had to be turned on and off -- by the Bulgarian-wrangler (my guy backstage who corrals and then lines up people for the next ensemble) on an ONSTAGE MUSIC CUE, since we had no headsets for communication between the booth and backstage.

And -- the show went seamlessly. Without a hitch. I was so focussed and determined, and had everything so tight, that there were no mistakes AT ALL. Once in awhile, a dancer missed a step. Once or twice, the intonation of a song was suspect (although it's really hard to tell with that music!!) -- but the show ran perfectly.

The Seattle P-I review mentioned that the show ran "seamlessly". That was me. I was so In The Zone!!! I just LOVED it!!!!!

Now ask me how was the car....

...And speaking of "clearances"...  OH!  And this could be a question for Ask BK Day too!!!...

A company in Richmond mounted Pete 'n' Keely a few years ago.  -And our very own BK produced the cast album.  Alas, the version of the show they were able to do was quite different from the original due to the various songs that were not cleared for release to be a part of the licensed version.  The whole "Cross Country Tour" section was particularly affected.  So...

BK - Did you have issues with the various "agencies" when it came time to record the album?  -I seem to remember hearing stories that you did, but that memory is very foggy right now.

Simon Cowell:  I find myself, more often than not, agreeing with him about the performances (??!!??!! @$#)%&), but he still manages to be offensive...making that asinine comment about Taylor's outfit looking like Clay Aiken.

From what I remember about Clay's attire on the show, he more often than not wore oxford (or other buttoned) shirts and slacks.

The car? Funny you should ask...

When Radost asked me to run this show, I said I would do it if a) they got a donor to contribute frequent flyer miles, and b) they found me a car.

No problem.

The car was a 1980 Toyota Celica. It seemed to be driving just fine. Got up to the cabin, down to Friday's rehearsal, back to the cabin. Drove it down for the Saturday run-through and concert, and back up to the cabin.

Sunday, I'm on my way down to a friend's 50th birthday party. I got down the mountain, and I'm on Hwy 2, between the tiny towns of Index (where I pick up my mail) and Gold Bar (where the grocery store is). Suddenly, I notice that the temperature indicator is WAY over into the RED!!!! Pull over!!! Where???? Half a mile later, a turn-out!

Long story short, I am now a triple-A member, who can't get Triple A-Plus until the second tow... so it only cost me $140 to get towed to Redmond WA. Then the driver took me to the birthday party. I stayed overnight, took her car up to the cabin on Monday to get my stuff, shut down the pump, close up the house.

So anyway, the woman who owns the car is still in Israel for the next 6 weeks, and her radiator, hoses, water pump and a lotta other stuff have to be replaced. It was ALL still original equipment... and I had nothing to do with it. But, still... it happened while I was driving it... oh, well...

And I'm looking forward to seeing DECEIT this weekend with our dear Bruce in a role tailor-made for him! I had the pleasure of performing onstage with him a number of times in the distant past, and of seeing him in leading roles in classic plays. It will be a nostalgia-rush to see him up there in the lights again...

General comment - which I guess could be rephrased into a question!

Australians and Brits consider the use of the word "Ass" by Americans as a touch "precious". Does the word have a legitimacy in it's use as a synonym for arse or is it a colloquilism only?

Do Canadians use the term in the same way?

It's a common term...not colloquial at all.  It means butt, buttocks, rear-end, bottom, etc.  I cannot speak for Canada, but "arse" is a variation of "ass" in the Webster's Dictionary.  I've only ever heard a Brit use "arse".

I think it funny other English-speaking peoples would find our use of the word "ass" as "precious"...especially given the British use of the word "brilliant"...the food was brilliant, the day was brilliant, the sex was brilliant, the sky was brilliant, the repairman-who-replaced-a-fuse was brilliant, the favor-the-next-door-neighbor performed was brilliant...every bloody thing that hasn't an ounce of a capacity to "be" brilliant is pronounced "brilliant."

 ;)

Jose - I do remember that the cross-country tour sequence was a problem and a big one.  Is it on the CD?  If it is, I think we just went ahead and said "the hell with it" and didn't even address the mechanicals on it.  But, I know they were having terrible problems clearing all those songs for the actual production - the publishing companies were just asking for way too much money per song.

Good morning/afternoon.
Re THE ARISTOCRATS. Saw it at a screening and Paul Provenza was there to answer questions. He was hilarious. I liked it a lot - but I have a rather warped sense of humor. Also, I love to see comedians and the ins and outs of how they work. i started my writing career doing comedy, so it's like a mechanic looking at cars. (Okay - bad analogy. Live with it.) I went to the screening with a documentary film maker friend and she walked out in disgust after about half an hour, leaving me there by myself. Which was fine. Better watching alone than with someone sitting beside you who is actively hating every minute. Conclusion: It's not for everyone.

My question for ASK BK day....do you think that there are any musicals or plays that are indeed timeless?

Most shows written in the 50's/60's/70's etc even if they take place in another time....have their decade stamped on their music and scripts...

But is there one that could be produced as written and NOT seem dated?

I also wasn't that thrilled with last night's IDOL. I guess they cannot win. If they do a popular song then the judges will tell them that it's not as good (as the original), and if they do a song nobody knows - the judges will tell them to do something more popular!

I think my favorite was Elliot.  If he can just get rid of that bowlcut hairdo.

Not sure who will go (since they sort of liked bucky). Maybe Lisa.

I was sort of glad that they called out chris (even though i've really liked him in the past). I just didn't care for what he did last night.

And even though they didn't like kellie's song, I thought it was sort of cute.

We Yanks use "bum", too.  I've heard the term applied to anyone who is indigent, but I've always considered it misused except when applied to an idler... someone who chooses to live on the public dole, rather than conform to societal expectations of making one's own way by holding a job, earning money and buying "respectability."  .

RE: last night's AMAZING RACE

.
.
.

I loved it. This season is really good.  I am liking the hippies a lot. They are really smart and so funny. Same with the boys.

I didn't care that the danielles lost. They were bugging me.  They were not resourceful, or good at directions. They ended up just following people, which really bugs me (when teams don't think on their own at all).

It was sort of weird that dentist yeller guy yielded them (vs the black team). But it was also sort of weird to me that he helped that team (which i thought was nice). I wonder if he had something against the danis.

Also what was up with fran being so mean to the dentist yeller guy. Does she just hate him?  I get why she didn't want him and his wife to overhear their earlier flight. But she was quite mean to them. ANd then barry was also really mean to them (dentist guy) at the end. I mean fran and barry (does anyone else think their names are hilarious, think broadway!) were already at the pit stop. Why not be nice and help the team?

It was actually touching to see the team so far behind race ahead and not be eliminated. I did feel a little bad seeing the danis cry. But they should have been gone last week.

I wonder if the show will use more to be continueds vs non-elims. I certainly hope so!

Breaking News Dept.

Quote
MIAMI - Disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and a business partner were sentenced Wednesday to five years and 10 months in federal prison, the minimum they faced for fraud related to their 2000 purchase of the SunCruz Casinos gambling fleet.

Abramoff and Adam Kidan both pleaded guilty to conspiracy and wire fraud, but they won’t have to report to prison immediately.

The judge postponed their reporting date for at least 90 days so the two can continue cooperating in a Washington corruption investigation and a Florida probe into the killing of former SunCruz owner Konstantinos Boulis. Both deny roles in the killing. Abramoff pleaded guilty in connection with the corruption probe but has yet to be sentenced.

RE: AMAZING RACE.

I'm curious who everyone's favorites are now. My original favorites were the dating nerds (dave and lori). I still like them. But they haven't shown that much promise lately (always finishing in the middle of the pack). I also like barbie and ken (team mojo). It looks like she will have a nice tantrum next week.

Right now as DR Dan said last week, the hippies and the boys are the clear favorites. They are both so strong and always finish at the top (even with bunching).

I suppose barry and fran are doing better than i expected. They are fairly smart. So i guess they just might stick around a few more weeks.

I wasn't really that fond of the team that finished last (the long distance daters) until last night (sorry i cannot remember their names). But even though she made some bad mistakes, they sort of seemed sweet.

I'm really not liking the yeller.  But it is so funny watching his wife patronize him. She is being so sweet. Well actually i'm not sure if she is actually being sweet and encouraging him. Or if she just knows that is what he likes to hear.

Timeless musicals: Hmmm, that is more difficult than it seems.  Of course, I think Li'l Abner is timeless but, of course, it isn't - it's firmly rooted in its decade.  Gypsy seems timeless, which is why it probably gets revived so often.

Yes DR Ron. "bum" is still in vogue.. The use of the word by Americans for vagrant, used to provide some mirth to us a kids.
Our "Waltzing Matilda" is a song about a "bum".

Brilliant "Brill." is no doubt over used by our Brit cousins - more like the American use of "neat" which we only use as a term for "tidy".

I just find the language developments interesting. I wondered if "ass" became the norm because of a pronunciation difference - as in the English/Australian "grass" "glass" and which rhyme with arse not ass.

I've  never understood why out neighbours across the Tasman sea in Middle Earth have developed such a different set of vowel pronunciations.

My use of the word "precious" was as in "affectedly or excessively delicate, refined or nice".

My Father-in-law who emigrated to Canada from England at the tender age of 65 insists on using "ASS" at all opportunities and roaring with laughter... the problem is that the word "ASS" is not considered  delicate, refined or nice at all, in fact quite the reverse.  It is considered a rather rude word and not to be used in school, churches, children's events or tea parties

On the other hand you can say "bloody" all day long on this continent and no one would raise an eyebrow

Well, I certainly didn't hate it. ;) The kind of humor (being presented as humor...in that specific context) didn't offend me at all.  It was interesting, as Maria said, to "see comedians and the ins and outs of how they work."  But for me, there were more moments of "okay, this is getting old" than moments of laughter, which there were quite a few, just not as many.

But I also took THE ARISTOCRATS to be sort of a historical document on a couple of levels.  On one level, it's preserving and presenting to the general public a joke that is known primarily only by comics but seems to be known by every one of them.  It's a kind of "behind-the-scenes" history lesson.  On another level (to me, at least), it's also a visual document of many comedians performing today and a lot who don't (or won't ever) have their own DVDs/recording and won't be seen (known?) by future generations.  In a few years (when they start dying off), this is probably going to be one of the few times that they have been preserved for posterity and the greater general public will even know about them...they didn't interview only hugely successful comedians.  It's a little like a "Broadway:  The Golden Age" for comedians, but in reference to one joke...sort of.

Simon is almost always the most astute of the three judges, but even he is ridiculous, inconsistent, and tone deaf from time to time. (For example, last week he praised Chris for being true to his singing nature. This week he chastised him for not switching it up and trying other styles. Which advice does he mean?)

As for the crack about Clay's attire, I do remember Clay wearing a brown leather jacket the week when "Grease" was one of his songs. This was near the end when they were singing more than one song per week, and they changed clothes to go with each number they sang. I remember Simon criticized Clay for wearing that outfit. The audience shouted him down for his disapproval.

Got four shows watched and cleared off the DVR. Before I watched them, though, I put in the third disc in the MURDER SHE WROTE set, and the episode selected was one of the most chock full of guest stars ever.

The breakup of a Dean Martin and Jerry Lewistype comedy-music team was used as the basis of this murder story which featured the likes of Steve Lawrence, Buddy Hackett, Patricia Crowley, Sheree North, George Furth, Arte Johnson, AND playing the part of Steve Lawrence's son - George Clooney!

Re: Mandissa/ American Idol.

I can't really see her winning. I suppose it's too hard to tell right now.

But to me she sings well, but i just don't love watching her.

Whoever put her in those tight jeans last night should be boiled in oil. They made her look twice as big as the outfits the last two weeks have made her look. I had honestly thought she had lost a serious amount of weight, but it was the clothes disguising it.

After looking so good the past few weeks, I don't know why she okayed that look last night.

LAW & ORDER: SVU had an Ice-T based episode, always my least favorite shows during the season. I find him such a limited actor and as he was in the spotlight for a great portion of the show, I just basically suffered through this one.

THE SOPRANOS had an interesting episode with the made guys squabbling about which pieces of the pie they wanted and were going to claim while Tony lay in a coma. Loved the coma-induced hallucinations with Tony as Kevin Finnerty. Wonder if that's somehow going to come back into the series at some point this season?

THE AMAZIN' RACE

SPOILERS  &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Funny Amazing Race last night.  Interesting challenges....and I am glad they are NOT making people EAT stuff....

Sad to lose the team that was eliminated, but they had a couple of chances to catch up and didn't take advantage of them....of course it didn't help that they had a delay they weren't counting on.

Funny send-off they got from Phil.  In effect, he said that they were the sluttiest women they ever had on the show.

Otherwise, I think it was the best episode in this race so far.  I really like the nail biting final task--wasn't all together sure who was going to be in last place during the last 15 minutes.

Definitely don't like the old folks.  Of all teams to pull attitude!  "Stay back. please!  Don't look at what we are doing!"  "Nope, can't tell you where the clue box is!"  What a couple of jerks!

While DR MAtt H was slogging through the chaff on his TV channels last night, I was listening to Michael Giacchino's music for "Lost" -- the new CD that features music cues from various Season 1 episodes.

In addition, I heard the "Return to Peyton Place" score (lovely thing it is, too), and I treated myself to a few concerti...the "Warsaw Concerto," the "Dream of Olwyn," and the "Danse Macabre" from "Hangover Square" by Bernard Herrmann.

Most enjoyable.

Congratulations on the seemlessly-smooth-running-ness, PennyO!  I was seriously thinking about coming up to see it and to meet you, but I almost forgot that I had signed up to usher for a performance, here in Olympia on Saturday.  I couldn't get out of it.  Maybe the next time!

Tomovoz - I read somewhere that TEACHERS is the American version of the British show.

Looks like it's going to rain again. And it's cold (for here).

Interesting piece in today's LA Times about so many books, shows and movies these days being about a loved one suddenly missing. Not necessarily dead - but simply gone. Leaves the house in the morning  - just another day. But never returns. A terrible, aching mystery and void left behind. Obviously a biproduct of 9/11.

Oddly perhaps, "Bloody" was not permitted on the Radio here before about 1970. And the word was "Beeped" in songs such as "The Battle Of New Orleans" and "Snoopy v. The Red Baron" a decade later.  Our "precious" years perhaps.

I put bloody right back in the song...

Also Montana does not like the sheep jokes that ND comes up with

Well, TEACHERS began with a geometry class being disrupted by two teachers hitting a golf ball into the class and interrupting the lesson by "playing through." Next we found the teachers in the lounge being called "gay" as a putdown. One guy admired the other's leather blazer and was called gay for doing so. Then, a male teacher (the lead of the show) has the female substitute history teacher into his classroom where they proceed to open beers and drink during the school day.

As I said, not for me.

I don't know.

I saw it in Sioux City. It's a horribly filthy joke, but you get desensitized to that after awhile.  I thought it was funny, but I would never let my mother see it

I think Fran and Barry just don't like the way the dentist guy yells so much. (He's really a dentist? I wonder if he's a "Little Show of Horrors" type dentist! ) I don't like them. I'd love to see them eliminated

Well...just how OLD are they?  Older than...???????

Fran & Barry have known each other for 45 years and have been married for over 40. The proud parents of two children, this adventure-loving couple makes their home in Summit County, Colorado. Although they travel a lot, the word "vacation" is not a frequently used term in their home. They prefer to refer to their trips around the world as "adventure travel."

Fran, who is 61 years old, is a retired accountant who describes herself as having a positive outlook on life. Fran enjoys skiing, biking, and hiking and has climbed all of Colorado's 54 14ers, which are the Colorado mountain peaks that exceed 14,000 feet. Fran admits that she's running THE AMAZING RACE to show that "old people" can compete just as well as most 25 year olds.

Barry, who is 63 years old, thrives on challenging himself and loves to compete. A retired urologist and former battalion surgeon with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, Barry describes himself as outgoing and dependable. His biggest disappointment with regards to Fran was that she refused to bungee jump from a bridge in New Zealand. Although he does point out that she made good by agreeing to skydive.

Having traveled to more than 45 countries together, these high school sweethearts are hoping their previous traveling experience will give them an advantage over the other Teams.

Watching LILITH.  Warren Beatty and Jean Seberg are almost unbearably attractive.  And I seem to remember reading years ago that Mr Beatty was sullen and nonresponsive to director Robert Rossen (making his LAST film) and extremely rude to Seberg - for some reason.

It is one STRANGE film to be sure.

THIS SPORTING LIFE is on TCM tonight.

The Hippies

BJ & Tyler are bohemian best buds who first met four years ago during the Semester at Sea program, where they shared the experience of sailing around the world. One of their most memorable moments was starting a dance party in the streets of downtown Guilin, China, which turned into a mass gathering of hundreds of Chinese men. They have been friends ever since, whether bouncing on trampolines at Burning Man or spontaneously swimming in the San Francisco Bay.

BJ is a graduate of Harvard University, while Tyler graduated from UC Santa Cruz after completing two semesters abroad--one in Hungary, the other in South Africa. Both have traveled the world extensively and speak several languages including Spanish and Japanese.

Both BJ & Tyler share a love of adventure, travel, and good times. After graduating from college, BJ moved to California to pursue surfing, karate and frisbee. Meanwhile, Tyler fell in love with a Japanese girl and decided to impress her by walking the 2000-mile length of Japan.

Their primary motivation for taking part in THE AMAZING RACE is to share in the adventure of racing around the world, meeting new people and, of course, winning $1 million.

"I want to be a dentist...."

Lake & Michelle are a close-knit married couple from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. They met as freshmen in college and have been married for 13 years.

Lake is a dentist who has limited traveling experience outside of the United States. While he describes himself as energetic and motivated, Michelle notes that he's your typical Type A personality, very impatient and always looking for ways to do it better.

Michelle is a stay-at-home mother of three who works part-time in Lake's office. She claims that she's much more laid back than her husband and hopes this won't cause friction between the two while taking part on THE AMAZING RACE. Michelle sees herself as being loyal, kind and loving and is running the Race to prove to herself and Lake that she's capable of accomplishing things.

While Lake & Michelle are both aware of their personality differences, they feel they work well together and hope their differences will actually help them as they travel the world on the Race.

The Nerds

David & Lori are a couple from Manhattan, Kansas who have been dating for three years. Although Lori is ready to get married, David would like to get his career off the ground before he ties the knot.

Describing himself as intelligent and compassionate, David has done little traveling, but is eager to explore the world. He received Bachelor's of Arts and Science degrees from Kansas State University. A musician who is very involved with his local underground music scene, David's many bands have released three full length CDs and have played in several local music festivals and venues across the country. His one phobia is heights.

An assistant manager at Pizza Hut, Lori says she is energetic, understanding and willing. She also believes herself to be more spontaneous than her partner, who is more reserved and likes to have a plan. Nevertheless, they look forward to working together as they travel around the world and learn about different cultures on THE AMAZING RACE.

It is actually quite amazing to see the lists of guest stars for this show...especially when you realize how many of them are no longer around.

I probably won't end up doing a LESTAT report here from a "quality" perspective, since by committing to not doing one before seeing the show, I won't have to say anything at all if I don't love it.  I'll report back on the experience of seeing it, though.  I am of course rooting for it to have a long life, mainly because of DR Jose, and have heard that lots of good changes have gone in.   We are really looking forward to it, very excited about the show that awaits us in a little over an hour.

Does that make any sense?  :)

Timeless musicals - I wonder if CHICAGO fits that bill, since it turned out to be even more relevant in irs 1996-to-present revival than in its original production in the 1970's, and it's got the movie version that will keep audiences interetsed for a long long time.

Well, congratulations are in order - with two days to go, we have just set a new record - March 2006 is our highest posting month ever, in the history of haineshisway.com.  We're currently over 9300 posts for this month, with the previous record, January 2005 clocking in at 9233 or something like that.  We still don't know if this will be a record month for number of hits - that we won't know for another two days - right now we're far enough behind our high number of hits that it's hard to tell.

I feel that soon we will be the most popular site on all the Internet.

Timeless classic musicals: I think FIDDLER ON THE ROOF qualifies - timeless, because the story is not really Jews and pogroms in turn-o-the-20th-century Russia - it's about the generations... about tradition versus "progress"... that's why it plays so well in Japan, too. It is about Family, about The Village. This is Timeless stuff...

Otto was born on Feb 5, 2006 and is still living with his brothers and sisters while they all go through the dreaded ear cropping and should be able to come "HOME" in a few weeks.  He is of the Schnauzer breed.  Eric and I played with him, his mom and his brothers and sisters last Sunday and were totally taken by him.

I'm with you, DR PennyO.  The tails I can understand because a Schnauzer tail that is not cropped looks like a pig!  All twirly and such.  I had a hard time getting passed the ear cropping.  In the end, they are easy to maintain.  It all began with Schnauzers were used as Rat dogs and the floppy ears and tails got in the way of their work.  Now they just do it, I guess.

Ok, I am now caught up on TAR and can comment!

Good episode! My favorite teams keep changing... I do like Fran and Barry and I do root for them, but they have not become my favorite as of yet...I was sad that they pulled the attitude on that other team.

Lake is loud and boisterous...I don't particularly care for him...but he sure looks good with his shirt off (from a couple of episodes ago!). As a team he and his wife don't do a lot for me.

The nerd team is fine...they got a bit grouchy, which surprised me, but I thought it was touching how he got teary eyed about it all.

I really like the hippies...they are quite entertaining...I really like Ray and Yolanda as I think they wore very, very well together and as other teams fall apart they could jump out ahead if they continue on as they have.

The frat boys I also get a kick out of just because they make me laugh.

You mean that's not how normal schools are?   LOL!!!

We are also fans of BOSTON LEGAL.  The show is very funny.

Last year, BOSTON LEGAL was entered in the dramatic categories at the Emmys where Spader and Shatner both won in their respective categories. I read that this year, producer David E. Kelley is planning to submit the show in the comedy categories instead since there are many fewer competing shows. It should do very well this year with the nominating committees.

For some reason tonight, I put in the DVD of MY FAIR LADY and watched various musical numbers while waiting for network TV to begin. Maybe I just never paid much attention before, but the sound is a real mess on the new DVD issue. You've got all this echo coming our of the rear channels. In their efforts to give this a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack, it's just not very well done. I might need to take out my laserdisc and see if the Dolby Prologic track is similar.

Enjoyed BONES tonight. As they've been doing for several episodes now, we're getting bits and pieces of backstories on the lab assistants during the show, and I'm enjoying getting to know them in more depth.

LOST had a superb episode full of breathtaking tension, some laughs, and the fascinating continuing story of John Locke. Such an amazing show!

THE EVIDENCE had a surprising episode that included some gay themes within the context of the show. Really came out of nowhere and greatly surprised (and delighted) me. I enjoyed the show quite a bit tonight, more so than last week's pilot episode.

Quite a day at the theater seeing THREEPENNY OPERA in the afternoon and LESTAT in the evening.  But the true highlight of the day had to be seeing DR Jose in a real Broadway orchestra pit, to which he came down to say hi to Skip and me at intermission.  (Just happened that one of Jose's colleagues, to whom Jose introduced us, had played for Skip's TIME AND AGAIN in San Diego, so that was fun as well.)

OK, I said I won't say anything from a "quality" perspective about LESTAT, but I will say that i just looked back at some of LESTAT's San Francisco reviews, and from what's on the stage at the Palace now, you'd never believe that this show (2 hours and 35 minutes, but which breezed along like a show under 2 hours) was the same basic piece as the one that got the San Franscisco reviews - in fact, they seem to have taken some of the major reviews to heart and used the tryout reviews the way MOVIN' OUT had apparently used their out-of-town reviews, as a constructive springboard to create a show that could well be a success.  My only concerns are (a) that Bernie Taupin's totally intentional (and not even remotely lazy) use of pop near-rhymes might come under criticism, as ear-tickling as they are and (b) well, how can I put this delicately - the show's content is extremely gay-friendly, and some people in our vicinity were heard to go "ewww" at the sight of two men kissing - I had to check my Playbill to asusure myself that this was New York and this was 2006.  As to clarity of the show, there were only two plot points I didn't follow, and I had them explained to me, but otherwise not knowing the novels was not a detriment.     A lovely evening, and both of us can't wait to see it again in a few weeks!

As for IDOL, the person who went home needed to go home. The wake-up call for the fans of the next-to-the-bottom finisher couldn't be clearer. Sad to say, the person who finished third from the bottom actually seemed resigned to leaving and will in all likelihood be next.

Nice to read, DR FJL, that work has taken place on LESTAT. When hit musicals open and run, it gives many of us who love them reason to come back to the city to see them.

Just finished watching a very scary movie called MUTE WITNESS (1994).  Not the sort of film I normally watch but this one happens to star my interviewee Diana Darrin's son, Evan Richards. Evan will be in Portland in two weeks showing his movie (he is now an independent filmmaker) at a film festival at the old Laurelhurst Theater.

Of course Diana Darrin has become a dear, sweet friend and I am excited to be able to finally meet her son...he was a kid actor back in the 80s (Mama Malone TV series, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure TV series, DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS movie and TV series).

Anyway, I had never seen any of Evan's films and thought I should view a few of them....he is one heck of a funny actor...and I mean that in a good way...and although this movie scared the bejeebers out of me, it was very entertaining!

Good Evening!

DR FJL - :)

And it was a pleasure seeing you and Skip again too.

Btw, it was a really good audience tonight - at least "you" sounded good through the house feed.  You got the humor and knew that it was OK to laugh.

*Now we just need to "fix" the wine bottle.  Let's just say, that, thankfully, no instrumentalists nor instruments were hurt/damaged.  Whew!

Just caught up with the posts. Congrats on the **record breaking month**! Glad to have been a small part of it.

Skamen! I'll be missing the HHW Deceit gathering on Friday. I'm set to attend on Saturday. Close but no cigar. However, I was there for the opening on Friday the 13th. It's only fitting that I should be there for the closing on April Fools Day. Looking forward to it.

Little Shop of Horrors was quite good tonight.  My friends Raney played Audrey and Melissa played one of the urchins.  They both have kick-ass voices and are wonderful actors. ;D The guy playing Seymour was appropriately "stylized," funny and touching.  Mushnik was okay and the guy playing Orin, et. al., is a Playhouse regular and was pretty good, but not quite as good as the part requires.  The rest of the production was pretty good, too.  The next show that they do is Urinetown.  THAT will be interesting. ;)

In doing my research, soem things have baffled me....

1. The fact that I live in ND and we have a sizeable Native American population, material is sometimes hard to come by, at least timely stuff concerning film, education and health. Lots of historical material but not a lot of current material is readily available. I have had to order a lot through ILL..

2. LOTS of stuff on the Metis, Ojibwa and The affiliated tribes but limited info on the Sioux. Very Ironic!!

Have you ever seen the original Roger Corman 1960s movie?  It's pretty bad, but in a cheezy, "I like it that way" kind of way. ;)

Anyway, the stage production is based on the original Roger Corman movie...and has the same ending as the original Roger Corman movie.  In other words, the movie musical has a "happy ending" that was changed from the stage version.  Just be prepared. ;D
