Well, you've read the notes, the notes have changed your life, you've changed your socks, your socks have changed you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - oh, I forgot - they're home right now - APRIL FOOL'S!

TOD: best april fool's joke....

I told the gal where  I was working many years ago that Mattheaw Ashford and Stephen Nichols were out in the Mall walking around. We needed to get her out of the office for it was her birthday. I kept trying to to convince her that it  was a true story and they were in Grand Forks on a secret mission.

She then went racing into the mall looking for them. She bought it hook, line and sinker. She came back after an hour of looking breathless, and we told her they just left and then we told her it was April's Fools....

However I have to say my best practical joke did not occur on Aprils Fools, it was when my friend Sandi and I put her brothers underpants in the freezer!

I got an e-mail...some time ago that had pictures of "Why you shouldn't drink with your friends."  I also found a few other pictures of basically the same thing.  Most of the pictures are too big to post (and some just aren't appropriate ;)), but here's one that should work:

One time in high school, I went with some friends and toilet papered a house.  We were discovered, but ran away before we could be identified.  We didn't get much tp-ing done, though.

I never did understand what was so funny about short-sheeting. :-\

Dayton Art Institute (http://www.daytonartinstitute.org)

I should be able to check back in with y'all between that and going to Franklin High School to see our niece Lauren play Fruma-Sarah in Fiddler on the Roof.

I knew this was a joke because they'd NEVER admit there was anything wrong with the voting. Never in a zillion years.

I have to admit I had never heard of Matt Ashford either before DECEIT, but I noticed his name in the Soap News section of TV GUIDE the other day saying he was coming back to, I guess, DAYS OF OUR LIVES.

My stock brokerage sent me an updated statement of last year's transactions, so I spent this morning entering the new information and redoing my tax return.

Since I owed some on both federal and state, I hadn't sent anything yet, so no harm, no foul, but I was really angry when that new revised statement came in the mail this week. One reason I held off even working on my taxes was this very reason. Last year, they sent in an update during the first week or March. This year, it was the LAST week of March. Once I do these awful things, I want it to be over and done with, not to have to think about it for another year.

Can't complain too much, however. The revisions meant I owed less money, so I guess it's worth the distress.

Just a reminder that LIZA WITH A 'Z' comes on SHowtime tonight at 8. If you have cable or satellite at all, you can watch it since this is "free preview" weekend at Showtime, and it's open to all with access to their signal.

Good morning, all!  After CONVICTION, which has me still unconvinced, I went to bed, only to be awoken by nausea and cramps around midnight.  I spent around a total of 3 hours with all hell erupting and today I feel quite lousy.  Whatever I had for dinner didn't agree with me, sad to say, and I'm staying quite close to home for today, in case it's a virus and not contaminated lettice.

I have no plans, so I'll be a total couch potato, read some more of THE PARTY OF THE CENTURY and MOZART AND HIS OPERAS, and clear out the Netflix titles.

TOD:  I have never, to my faulty memory, played an April Fool's joke, and as for the day itself, I make a fool of myself publicly around 363 days already.  Who needs a special day?

Good morning! The girls are still sleeping.  They had a blast last night.  I learned a lot about hot boys and some new teenage lingo and also that when you go through a yellow light you tap the dashboard and hit the inside roof of the car to get "sex points"  good heavens.

Looks like it might be a pretty day here... somewhat cloudy - big fluffy ones - and patches of blue. Fingers crossed! I move into the loft today, for the whole month of April!!!

Wow, I had a good time at DECEIT last night. Yes, the strange, howling, drunk madwoman was quite near to DR Laura and me. Just to our left. First thing I noticed about her was her VERY resonant voice. It should happen to me!!! Deep, mellow, lustrous, LOUD! Her stage whisper was a locomotive moving through the theater... but her vocalisms! Oh, my, instant envy in my pipsqueak larynx!! You could do outdoor Shakespeare with a stimme like that!

She seemed quite happy. Her laugh was more than melifluous. It required the assistance of two people to walk her outa there.

OK, so tonight I have several friends attending the last show with me. One is my sister Rikki. One is Felice Black, who was the Goatseller in a production of The World of Sholem Aleichem which Bruce was in, over a hundred years ago. You WERE in that show, weren't you, Bruce??? Anyhow, Felice is coming.

And now, to pack...

Morning all.  I'd better say that today because tomorrow at this time it will almost be noon!

I like the fact that it will be lighter in the evenings but I sure do hate to give up one of my hours on the weekend.

I've never really played an Aprils Fool joke on anyone nor do I remember ever having one played on me.  At least none come to mind.  I also feel I tend to make a fool out of myself without some special day.

The only thing I do know about April Fools was that it used to be the New Year on a calendar until someone switched it to January 1st.  The people who refused to change were dupped "April Fools" and had tricks played on them.

I'm sure that if I did some internet research, I could come up with the reference but I'm to lazy.

In the meantime:

Thank you, DR DakotaCelt for the Doctor Who link.  I used it to link to the BBC page for the doctor and had a grand time looking at pictures and stuff from the older show.

I remember 3 of the Doctors before I lost interest.  Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Colin Baker.  I met Peter Davison at one of the cons.

I also remember the Production Unit Manager: John Nathan-Turner.   I (along with several others) got to share a hot tub with him.  Not planned.  I just happened to go to the hot tub  and there he was.

The other thing I remember was a kid who wanted to make an impression on him so he pushed him into the pool!   :o  He made an impression alright.  He was baned from the con and any future cons that group put on.  :D

That wasn't on April Fools day but I guess that would be considered a trick played on someone.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes of yesterday.

Owing to the 9.5 hour work day, it wasn't a very celebratory day.  But DB Jed did take me out to Red Lobster, and we had a yummilicious dinner.  Jed had a shrimp trio platter, I had the broiled seafood platter, and we both stuffed ourselves.  Tomorrow I will be going out to breakfast with my mother, sister, and Jed in Seattle.  Then tomorrow evening Jed and I will be going on the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train.  Neither of us have ever been, and Jed's never been on a train, so it should be lots of fun.

Congratulations, Bruce!  I'm glad the taping went well.  I wanted to be there with Laura and son, but it wasn't to be.
Sorry about the drunk woman in the audience--very wise to get of her before the performance.

My favorite See's candies are their Butterscotch Squares (these wonderful brown sugar things) and Bordeaux.  Can't be beat-- and Godiva, Kron, LeNotre and all the others don't make anything close to it.  A good old plain chocolate covered vanilla buttercream is pretty darn good, too!

Hello, my  friends.  I went away from the lights of 14th Street and into my personal haze.  But now that I'm back in the lights of 14th Street, tomorrow will be brighter than the good old days!

I'm up, I'm up.  It was raining early this morning and it got me up at six-thirty.  Since I hadn't fallen asleep until three, that was not pleasing.  I just went back to bed and I finally fell asleep about an hour later.  So, I guess I got a whopping five hours of sleep.  Oy and vey.  Well, I'm doing nothing today but shipping a couple of packages and resting my voice, so maybe I'll get another hour somewhere along the line.  Don't we Spring Forward tonight at two?  Someone confirm, please.  I think I shall set my TIVO to record Liza, although I should probably just wait for the DVD, which comes out this week, I think.  We shall see.

I don't remember Felice as the Goat Seller.  I don't remember the Goat Seller at all, but I was definitely in the show, playing Aaron Katz.  Dolores JiJi was my wife in that show - she's the gal I recently spoke to, whom I haven't seen or heard from since graduation.

Back from the Princess Diana exhibit, which was quite lovely.  One of the ladies in our party played a real April Fool's trick on her husband by telling him it was "historical" and making him accompany her.  My husband, when I asked if he minded if I went, said, "Fine with me as long as I don't have to go!"

DR Elmore - I'm sorry you've had stomach problems.  Thursday, my mother-in-law had her third bout since Christmas with that sort of thing and has, again, landed in the hospital.

wait a minute...what's this about getting sex points?

What do you do with them?  Are they like the old S/H Green Stamps?  How many books do you have to get to cash them in?  Is the catalog online somewhere?

I hope DR CILLA LIZ can answer these important questions, because I certainly don't want to go to an Asslee Simpson concert.

Well, I'll be doggoned if I didn't rush down to Fred Meyer's today to buy plants and what nots for spring planting and then hurry home so that I could mow the lawn and get the plants into the ground...and then it started raining just as I was putting on my "working in the yard" duds!

OH, well...I guess I will just lounge on the couch and watch PLEASE DON'T EAT THE DAISIES which stars DR Jane's old school chum Flip Mark.

Neat on meeting Peter Davison... I also liked him as Tristan Farnon on All Creatures Great and Small.

What a way to meat John-Nathan Turner. I always found it interesting that he worked on the first seaston on All Creatures and then went o Dr. Who.

You are a naughty girl for pushing him in the pool!

Sleepy time gal when all your dancing is through
Sleepy time gal I'll find a cottage for you
You'll learn to cook and sew
What's more you'll love it I know
When you're a stay at home, play at home 8 oclock sleepy time gal

The rain this morning was an April Fools joke. It's totally disappeared and the day is gorgeous. Who knew?

TOD: I abhor April Fools jokes, so I don't play them. DD, when she was younger, even though she knew how I felt, did it to me each April 1st. One year she rigged the kitchen faucet so when I turned it on it sprayed me in the face. And I'm such a chump when it comes to things of that sort, that it never occured to me it was a joke. I ran for the phone to call the plumber!
As for See's...  Dark chocolate marzipan, of course (DR Jane and I will one day share a box) and dark chocolate Coconut Delight. And almost anything that's dark choc nutty and crunchy as long as no toffee is involved. Yummy. That's made me hungry for chocolate!

I'll be attending DECEIT tonight with a friend. Should be fun.

#84: Viagra for Hamsters
In 2000 The Independent reported that Florida researchers had developed a Viagra-like pill to treat sexually frustrated pets, including hamsters. Veterinarians were said to have greeted the news with derision, but the article pointed out that there are few things as sad as a pet suffering from feelings of sexual inadequacy, noting that "It's not unknown for a guinea pig to sit in its cage thinking, 'I haven't had sex for months. Am I so unattractive?'." Owners were instructed to simply grind the pills up and sprinkle them in the pet's food. Laying some newspaper down on the floor once the pills began to take effect was also advised. The pills were to be marketed under the brand name Feralmone.

#44: Daylight Savings Contest
In 1984 the Eldorado Daily Journal, based in Illinois, announced a contest to see who could save the most daylight for daylight savings time. The rules of the contest were simple: beginning with the first day of daylight savings time, contestants would be required to save daylight. Whoever succeeded in saving the most daylight would win. Only pure daylight would be allowed—no dawn or twilight light, though light from cloudy days would be allowed. Moonlight was strictly forbidden. Light could be stored in any container. The contest received a huge, nationwide response. The paper's editor was interviewed by correspondents from CBS and NBC and was featured in papers throughout the country.

#35: Big Ben Goes Digital
In 1980 the BBC reported that Big Ben, in order to keep up with the times, was going to be given a digital readout. It received a huge response from listeners protesting the change. The BBC Japanese service also announced that the clock hands would be sold to the first four listeners to contact them, and one Japanese seaman in the mid-Atlantic immediately radioed in a bid.

This story was related to us by a guide when we made a trip to Sitka, I gues the whole town fell for it.

#14: The Eruption of Mount Edgecumbe
In 1974 residents of Sitka, Alaska were alarmed when the long-dormant volcano neighboring them, Mount Edgecumbe, suddenly began to belch out billows of black smoke. People spilled out of their homes onto the streets to gaze up at the volcano, terrified that it was active again and might soon erupt. Luckily it turned out that man, not nature, was responsible for the smoke. A local practical joker named Porky Bickar had flown hundreds of old tires into the volcano's crater and then lit them on fire, all in a (successful) attempt to fool the city dwellers into believing that the volcano was stirring to life. According to local legend, when Mount St. Helens erupted six years later, a Sitka resident wrote to Bickar to tell him, "This time you've gone too far!"

#17: The Sydney Iceberg
On April 1, 1978 a barge appeared in Sydney Harbor towing a giant iceberg. Sydneysiders were expecting it. Dick Smith, a local adventurer and millionaire businessman (owner of Dick Smith's Foods), had been loudly promoting his scheme to tow an iceberg from Antarctica for quite some time. Now he had apparently succeeded. He said that he was going to carve the berg into small ice cubes, which he would sell to the public for ten cents each. These well-traveled cubes, fresh from the pure waters of Antarctica, were promised to improve the flavor of any drink they cooled. Slowly the iceberg made its way into the harbor. Local radio stations provided excited blow-by-blow coverage of the scene. Only when the berg was well into the harbor was its secret revealed. It started to rain, and the firefighting foam and shaving cream that the berg was really made of washed away, uncovering the white plastic sheets beneath.

For you tv lovers....

#3: Instant Color TV
In 1962 there was only one tv channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station's technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed technology, all viewers could now quickly and easily convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their tv screen, and they would begin to see their favorite shows in color. Stensson then proceeded to demonstrate the process. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of people, out of the population of seven million, were taken in. Actual color tv transmission only commenced in Sweden on April 1, 1970.

My biggest shock of the entire evening: those wonderful dancers who gave it their all weren't listed in the credits anywhere on the broadcast! It was nice to see LIZA WITH A 'Z' again and put pictures with the music I've been listening to for 30+ years on the soundtrack LP.

I'll be curious to read what you folks getting the DVD will say about the transfer. The high def broadcast looked adequate in sharpness but just adequate. At 11, I started watching it again on the standard definition Showtime Channel, and it looked very soft and a little pale. I understand it had to undergo an extensive restoration to look even this good, but I'll be curious about the quality of the DVD.

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?  Yikes.  Back from an excellent show - certainly it was my best - I was completely relaxed and just had a great time.  Terrific audience, too.  We had a little afterparty, and now I'm home and I'm going to have a bite to eat and then write the notes, which will be up later.  Now, let's have a frenzy, shall we?

Back from the closing night of DECEIT. A full house, an excellent audience. Having seen the play back in January on opening night, I must say that there is a world of difference. And that world is round and slightly balding and called Kimmel. bk's performance brings humanity, humor and pathos to a character who, when I first saw the play, was in short supply of all those qualities. Congrats to bk. Time for the 21 year hiatus to end.

The closing night partay was pleasant. I'm not huge on those things, so I didn't stay for too long. Just long enough to chat a bit, fill up on a lot of cheese and some delicious dried apricots.
(I offered to take some photos for the site, but bk pulled a Greta Garbo, so you'll have to use your imaginations.)

All in all, a wonderful evening.

Sounds it like it was a splendid evening all around. I just finished slogging through Cheyenne Autumn for the second time today...

Contemplating going to bed in a bit. Not feeling the greatest...

I've been watching "Saturday Night Live" (I haven't watched it in years) and the guest is Scarlett Johansson.  She's pretty funny.  Who knew? :)
