Well, you've read the rather obtuse notes o' the day, so now it is time to post until the cows come home or, at the very least, until I come home.  Say the secred word and you win a hundred dollars.

DVD - Empty at the moment

VCR - last night's The West Wing, and tonight's Survivor, CSI, and Without A Trace... I really have some catching up to do!

CDs - Male Ensemble Northwest "Reflections of Christmas," Manhattan Transfer "Swing," "The Student Prince," and a lovely bit of disco sent from Down Under!

DVD: Richard Rodgers "Some Enchanted Evening". My third viewing. I had better return to its rightful owner (and generous friend) this week.
CDs: Karen Akers "In A Very Unusual Way", "Titanic" OBC, Christiane Noll "The Ira Gershwin Album"
VCR: prepared for taping the first episode to be shown here of "American Dreams" In Oz it has been retitled "Our Generation". Not much faith by the network concerned as non ratings junk season has started.
Record player: Patsy Cline "I'll Sail My Ship Alone".

DR Ron thanks for taking on "tilting the windmills" for DR Jennifer!  :D

And actually, DRs - Mr Hitchcock appears in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" in the Albert Hall sequence, as Miss Doris (who can do no wrong) Day is explaining what is happening, Mr Hitchcock dressed as a diplomat in white tie and tails, and red banner comes down some stairs behind her and is being introduced to a group of people.  BUT Doris is SO compelling it is hard to take your eyes off her.

The bus sequence Mr BK speaks of may be the one that occurs immediately AFTER the credits in "North by Northwest".  ;D

Winter weather advisory!

In my DVD - "Pirates of the Carribean" just arrived!

In my CD - the Tony Perkins CD from Collectible Music, very nice.

In my VCR - "Come Back Little Sheba", ah Shirley Booth!

Hmmmmmmmmmm.....after writing this, I just checked a website and it says Hitchcock is in the Morroco sequence watching the acrobats.  I will check for sure, but I am sure I saw him in the other place.  More later.

Hmmmmmmmmm.......I don't see him in the Albert Hall sequence, maybe I dreamed it....but my VHS is not letterboxed.  He IS supposed to be in the shot in Morrocco where the acrobats are standing on each other's shoulders,  but again, pan and scan defeats me.

The quest goes on.  Perhaps someone else can answer!

On the CD player right now is The Boy from Oz. I knew so little of Peter Allen or his music before I saw the show, and have to say I'm enjoying the gentle songs even more than the flashy showstoppers. There's a bonus track, the moving, simple and beautifully sung Tenterfield Saddler, in which Peter tells us about his grandfather, his father and Australia. It's a far more effective handling of his father's sad story than is the present scene, and I think it would complement Don't Cry Out Loud, exquisitely sung by Beth Fowler. I know that some shows have been tweaked after opening night (Illya Darling is one that comes to mind). And if anyone is asking, that's how I would improve TBFO.

Good morning everyone!

My first exam is at 2pm EST.  Send me Arab and Israeli vibes! :D

My audio-visual pleasures of the week:

CD discman: RENT the first cd (don't ask me why, but around December I always get a hankering for this show... faults and all.  I swear it is my inner RENT-head coming out to haunt me)

MP3 playlist: a mixture of a lot of shows I only have snippets from (like THO MO MILLIE and Lippa's the WILD PARTY and CABARET and... the list goes on)

There's nothing in my vhs or dvd players.

Note on yesterday's SURVIVOR - how boring was that episode?  I'm afraid that nothing exciting is going to happen from here on in... :(

I go to deliver the cheques today to the travel agency.  I realized yesterday that on their sign they misspelled "Manhatten" as "Mamhattan".  Is that a bad sign or what?  I hope the office I was directed to actually exists...

Oh well I must learn all about the Middle East in less than 5 hours... wish me luck and send those vibes! :D

Did anyone see Friends last night? I usullay dont find that show very funny  but the whole Hanukah armadillo thing was hysterical! ;D

Not sure if you read my comments from last night, but yep I found it boring too.

Although when you say "nothing exciting is going to happen" how do you see the rest of the show playing out?

We have: Burton, Jon, Lil, Darrah, and Sandra left.

Personally I cannot believe that Darrah has won the last two immunities. She seems to just be sliding through without doing anything. I thought for sure Burton would win at shooting. But with Darrah's accent, I wonder where she's from. Maybe she's used to skeet shooting. Cause she got three shots in a row.

I know that Burton is committed to Jon and Lil. I know Lil is committed to Burton. I think Jon is committed to Burton.  I wonder if the 3 women will turn on the guys. I suppose that would be the smartest thing for them to do to win.  However, I will not be happy with Lil if she turns on Burton. Turning on your alliance is bad, bad Survivor form.

Okay enough Survivor talk.  Good morning all.

It is still freezing here. Brrrrr!

Why is it that even though I have checked the "Always Stay Logged In" box I still have to log in occasionally?

***

CD - JERRY SPRINGER - The Opera

DVD - Christmas on the Ed Sullivan Show

VHS - KISS ME KATE (Drake/Morrison/Wilson/Hayes)

***

I do not understand New York critics any more.  First WICKED got reviews a lot worse than it deserved.  Yes it had its problems, but nowhere near as many problems as the reviews would lead you to believe.

Next they took a good performance --- but hardly the be all and end all --- by Donna Murphy and praised it so that it seemed like the greatest performance in the last fifty years.

And now they have given mediocre reviews to NEVER GONNA DANCE.  It may not be the greatest show I have ever seen, but it is the most entertaining evening on Broadway I have spent in years.

***

I understand that the real reason Mary Tyler Moore just left the new Neil Simon show in previews was that she was mad that Simon wanted her to learn her lines and not have them fed to her in a special earpiece.

And how long has Simon been married to Elaine (SUGAR) Joyce?

***

Yesterday the Times printed a lengthy obit for dancer Katharine Sergava, best known as the original Dream Laurie in OKLAHOMA!  Today they printed a retraction saying she is not dead, but is 94 and living in a nursing home in NYC!  Don't they check these things out?

Jennifer, I check your posts here first instead of going to the weathernetwork.com!

I'm almost done my detective fiction paper. Somehow, I put barely any effort into it, and yet I feel it is really, really good. In brief, it is about blondes, criminals and "otherness".I've learned the key to sucess in papers: to get A-, write about feminism, to get As write about sexuality.

Today, I plan on delivering this paper, seeing DR emily, going to walmart to develop pictures, remembering to deliver books to two different libraries, read 8 chapters of a history text book and see if I feel well enough to go clubbing. oy!

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOH.... there is no schooooool todaaaaaay, which means I get to sleeeeeeeep, and possibly go see a moooooooovie, and definetly shooooovel, and maybe not go to woooooooork, tra la laaaaaaaa!

That was my "No School" song. I love it when we get *shock horror gasp* 6 inches of snow, and school is cancelled. Laura II said it last night, the school board freaks out when any form of weather, other than wind and sunshine, DARE to show their ugly faces. We've had school cancelled for 2 inches. That actually wasn't a good day, you can't even have FUN in two inches!

In my CD player is the SHREK soundtrack. This is actually a very cute CD, it has a lot of entertaining songs on it.

In my DVD player is STIGMATA...I love this movie.

In VHS are old tapes of me when I was younger, making a fool out of myself to be funny for the camera. It will be good blackmail when I'm older, I suppose.

My kitty is crying for me to play with him, I'll come back later.

I have the widescreen DVD of THE MAN WHO KNEW TO MUCH, and would have checked it last night when challenged if I had been awake. I will check it today.

The bus sequence bk is thinking about is in TO CATCH A THIEF, I believe. No way Hitchcock would repeat an appearance on a bus a film or two later. By that stage of his career, he knew people were looking for his appearance and varied them as much as he could.

Media check:

CD - Judy Garland - ALONE

laserdisc - GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS (1969)

DVD - CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG today and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN tomorrow.

CD: Two fantastic CDrs courtesy of our man in Australia..thanks Tom! Peter Brocklehurst who has astounded me and I can't stop listneing to him! What an amazing voice. He should really go places! ...and Miss Dorothy Provine with her album THE ROARING 20s. What a surprise! She is quite a songstress!

Also listening to some wonderful Christmsas choral music supplied by DR Jason..of particular note is Robert Shaw Choir and Oklahoma City University Choir. Needless to say I have been listening to a lot of music this week thanks to the kindness of DRs!

DVD: Haven't watched much this week other then an episode of SHEENA, QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE and a fun budget DVD I found at Walmart, CHRISTMAS WITH GUMBY which is a compilation of vintage Gumby short subjects.

VHS: Taped WIZARD OF BAGDAHD but haven't watched it yet. Only thing I have watched on VHS this week was last nights episode of QUEEN FOR A DAY.

That comment cracked me up. Thanks DR Andrea.

Btw, if you check the weather network you'll be confused. It says it's snowing now. Sorry but it's not snowing here.

Also it says it's -10C plus windchill. And it says tonight it's going down to -24C with windchill (that is COLD).

The funny thing is that even though it's apparently snowing right now, there will be "no accumulation in the next 24 hours".   I love when they contradict themselves.

I just read the NEVER GONNA DANCE review from the VARIETY critic. It was mixed as well, but a bit more positive than Ken Mandelbaum's, though they seemed to agree that the show peaked in the first dance number 10 minutes in, the two leads don't have much chemistry, that Karen Ziemba is underutilized but scores big in her shimmy number in the second act, and that the show seemed a bit bland on the whole.

Yes, it's the bus in To Catch a Thief, and a bus in North by Northwest (although he's trying to get on rather than already being on).  I'll pop in Man Who Knew Too Much later, unless someone beats me to it.  His appearance would never have been as late as the Albert Hall sequence.

There are two sides to every problem, and I understand Neil Simon is in very poor health and very short tempered these days. Mary is getting close to 70 and the stress of learning new dialogue every day is challenging to even the most experienced actor. Also remember that even though she has certainly done her share of theater through the years, she's primarily a television and film actress, used to short scenes, retakes, and not always prepared for the brutal break-in period of a new comedy.

Good morning to "soaring like a bird" BK, and all of the early H/Ks --

DVD player -- another lovely episode of The Sopranos

VCR -- It started out to be the videocassette of Hello Dolly a couple of evenings ago, but unfortunately Dolly had come off of her spindle or something.  We ended up extracting a looooonngg piece of videotape out of the transport, and will have to give Ms. Levi a proper burial and a Shiva.

CD player -- a test CD of an upcoming project for a friend of mine....sent to me for evaluation.

In watching the national weather this morning, I am holding good and safe thoughts for our NorthWest Brethren (and Sistren??) as it was calling for high winds, very cold, and overall nastiness in some parts.

And also holding good thoughts for the east coasters and all the way in to Indiana and Illinois!

Good morning!

<cough, cough>

Damn, cough!  Ah, well...

Oh, Good morning.

Yes, it is snowing in the land of DR Swishy Sarah and me (mine?).  I have understudy rehearsal at 1:00, and will most likely go in even though it's sort of optional for me today - they are mainly covering scenes and not songs and dances, but if I'm there...  Besides, it will good for me to get in early before the afternoon flurries start up.  And depending upon the weather pattern tonight, I may end up staying at the theatre tonight - well, at least with one of the actors in their housing/apartments.

Oh... What's a DVD player?  What's a VCR?  What exactly is VHS?  And a CD player is that thing you get music out of from shiny, plastic discs with small holes in the middle of them?

;)

Ah, well...  However, I do plan on digging out my Christmas music CDs when I'm back home in Richmond Sunday night.  One of my favorites is Tuck Andress' "Songs and Carols About Snow".  Amazing playing.

-And I'm guessing we should be sending out good vibes to DR Jason... Doesn't his show open this weekend in West Virginia?  I'll have to check out the website later...  But just in case...

[move=right,scroll,6,red,100%]Good Vibes to DR Jason currently in West Virginia![/move]

CORRECTION

Set designer Robin Wagner is male.  An incorrect pronoun was used in the review of "Never Gonna Dance" in today's Part 2 Weekend, which is printed in advance.

Of course I noted that yesterday when their review was posted six hours earlier than it should have been.

Good morning all!  BK named this Daily Discussion right--Like a Winged Bird.  That's exactly how this week of vacation went.  Sigh.  I am already looking forward to my next vacation sometime in the Spring when I hope to make my long awaited trip to NYC to see some shows and meet some friends.

In the DVD:   Babylon 5 first season.  Still working my way though it.

In the VHS:  Babylon 5 bloopers--just had to watch that again.  The "commercial" for the Book of G'kar,  seeing Londo sing Me and My Shadow and of course seeing Majel Barrett walk into the door and saying “It’s alright.  I’m used to it.”  are priceless.

CD:  The Monkees. Talking about them made me want to hear the old songs again.

Gotta go–we’ve got a cold front on our front door and I have some grocery shopping I need to do.  That and I’m going to shangkai my Mom into getting her flu shot.  I begged her to get one when I got mine but she didn’t want to go get stuck.  Now that they’re making such a big deal of it on the news, I think I have her talked into getting one.    I’m going to pull into the Walk-In clinic for her to get it and that will be that.  If I can get her out of the car.  Sigh. She can be so stubborn when she doesn’t want to do something.  It’s hard when the tables are turned and you’re the “parent” to your own Mother.

I haven’t had the chance to see Juliana’s Journal.  I promise to read it when I get home.

Everyone, posters and lurkers, have a warm, happy, safe day!

Thanks DR MattH --  Actually, that very thought ocurred to me, that Ms. Levi would make a dandy stocking-stuffer on DVD.

For part of the time that I still lived in Hollywood, it was always fun to be driving out towards West L.A., and see the backlot of 20th Century Fox.  You could still see the "New York streets" set for the Dolly exteriors.

Likewise, driving over on Forest Lawn Drive, for years you could look across the big flood control canal into the back of Warner Brothers and see the big exterior set of the castle with the port cullis and drawbridge that was built for Camelot.  It was even funnier when later they re-did the same exterior set by draping a lot of vines on it, and it became the llamasery for "Lost Horizons."

I think it's great that there are still a couple of studios who still have backlots! I have always when watching movies made during the Golden Age enjoyed seeing versions of the same exteriors used in film after film. It's actually quite fun looking for them.

It's falling ... the first snow of the year.  If only I could find my big winter coat.

I only wanted to see the new Simon play because I was intrigued by the combination of his writing and Mary Tyler Moore's acting.

When I was in Scotland some years ago, the leading man in my Murder at the Savoy there was someone who, like me, admits that everything he knows he knows through musicals.  He said "I don't know much about American history, but I AM familiar with Assassins.  Here in Britain, nobody recognizes the name Gerald Ford.  But I can tell you the names of the two women who fired shots at him: Squeaky Fromme and Mary Tyler Moore."

Oh no, I thought, not our Mary.

DVD: a new musical that played in Buffalo this year called A Week in the Life.  I'm mentioned in one of the bonus tracks, I believe.

CD: That Broadway In Love compilation and our first Nancy LaMott.  Who was it who wrote Not Exactly Paris?  I'd guess Dave Frishburg, but after what he wrote in Another Song About Paris, it doesn't seem likely.

Careers was a marvelous game because you had to decide on goals for your life: how much money you wanted to accumulate, how much fame, and how much happiness.  Then you'd move your piece through various career paths.  Farming, for instance, brought you lots of happiness, but not much money and very little fame.  I hope those unfamiliar with the game now understand why it's such a good metaphor for life.

Do check out the utterly revamped website at www.WeddingMusical.com (http://www.WeddingMusical.com) . . . you may even find a picture of DR Diane somewhere in there.

Why, Thank You So Much, DR MusicGuy!   You and DR Kerry also have very nice countenances.  ;D

As for DR Jason, if memory serves me right: Scrooge, West Viginia Public Theatre - ???   That's why he had to leave on a bus last Saturday in the wee hours of the morning.  Hope he made it there safe and sound.

Well, time for me to get the snow/ice scraper out...

-And, yes, I will be careful on the roads.  But if I'm not, does that mean I'll get punished?  ;)

Ciao for niao...

Thanks MATTH for clarifying the Hitchcock mystery - but now I am so upset that I can't remember the one I am thinking about...grrrrrrrr....I musta dreamed it.

And I forgot - congratulations on the royalty cheques, Mr BK!  You are worth every penny and more!

DR NOEL....LOL....Mary the Assassin...or the new musical Marry the Assassin!

DRMG - there is a part of the book WHERE THE TRUTH LIES that describes an experience on the back lot of Warner Bros - have you read the book, and it sounds like a great place!

How many here recall that Peggy Fleming did a TV ice show special using the set from "Camelot" as backdrop?  They installed "ice" on the standing set and Peggy swirled and fluttered about for a full hour!

At least, I think it was Peggy.....!

Actually, that is a common mistake.  If you look closely at the legs you can tell that it was really Dick Button.

DVD: Two sets added to the collection this week, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.  In the first case, I really want to re-view Fellowship of the Ring before watching the extended TT, if just to get myself back into the story.  In the second case, I've got to quit watching the bonus material before watching the film, because the bonus stuff contained a major spoiler (boo hiss).  Still, this should keep me busy for a little while.  (I've got Alias, Season 2 on hold for the moment.  While the Delaware no-sales-tax business has me elated, I want to shop around on-line to find a better price.)

Well, lo and behold, there was an article in this morning's newspaper that a theater in the area is ALSO doing the 10 hour screening of all three LORD OF THE RINGS films. The showing is completely sold out and has been for weeks, but there are people who are going in costume to this event! This has become another STAR WARS! I had no idea that the films had such cults swirling around them.

The article said there were about 150 theaters nationwide doing it.

I have had to log in four of the five times I have come to HHW today even though the always stay logged in button is checked.  This has only happened once before since we switched to the new board.  I refuse to post this on the technical board as I will get another snippy reply which implies I don't know what I am doing.  Is anyone else having this problem?

The snow is here.  We will probably close early.

NEVER GONNA DANCE got an excellent review in the NY Daily News and 2½ Stars in the Post with the review much better than the headline ("Never Gonna Last") implies.

WEL-

Whether you post your technical issue here or on the technical forum isn't going to stop anyone from giving you a snippy reply. Having read the thread I assume you are referring to re: searches, I can only say that Mark wasn't being snippy (although that might be how you took it) - he was explaining quite clearly that for him to help you, or anyone else for that matter, he needs to know exactly what the issue is.

Think of it as this. You stop and head into a gas station and say to the attendant "I can't get to where I am going"

Does that mean you are out of gas, you have engine problems, you are lost, you can't find your directions, etc..

As for the logging in problem - there could be a plethora of reasons why you've had to log in (and Mark can correct me here) - everything from perhaps a corrupted "cookie" written to your computer, entering from a different page on the site or my favorite - random computer wackiness caused by the fact that computers are not perfect.....

The REASON there is a technical forum on this board, is so that the daily notes doesn't get congested with these types of matters for those that just want to read today's ramblings and not worry about other matters...

Just read the NEVER GONNA DANCE review at the NY Times. "The bland leading the bland" was a pretty funny line, but it seems to reflect what many of the reviewers are saying about it. Wonder how it's doing at the box-office? The first week of previews wasn't especially well attended if I remember the box-office reports from VARIETY, but maybe it's doing better as word of mouth spreads.

Thank you for welcoming me back, DR's Matt H. and MusicGuy. In answer to your question, DR MusicGuy, yes I have a number of things in the works. I'm waiting for Network notes to do the next draft of a TV-movie, have another one that will be shooting in January and a number of projects that are out there (including a feature) which -  to incorporate the analogy of the day - may or may not take wing.
Meanwhile, I'm settling into my new life.

First of all I was not the only person who got a snippy reply on the technical board.  I have read other threads and that is the tone of many replies.

I am doing absolutely nothing different than I have done in the past.  I go to the second page of BK's notes, click on the bottom and I am automatically logged in.  I am using Internet Explorer like I have always used.  And it happened again this time.    I don't know if it will happen on my computer at home, but I will try it there.  At least when I log in I can get on which is better than not being able to use the site at all.  I just liked the convenience of not having to type in my name and password every time.

The night I saw NEVER GONNA DANCE (the night before Thanksgiving) it was a full house and they even sold standing room.  The audience was very enthusiastic  and several numbers almost stopped the show.  I hope good word of mouth can counteract the fair reviews.  It has so far with WICKED.

Just rewatched the Morocco marketplace scene. As Day and Stewart are watching the acrobats with their backs to the audience, Hitchcock comes in from the left of frame and stands with his back to the audience watching as well.

The difference between watching a DVD or a formatted for T.V. version, we could only see Hitch from the back.  We missed his entrance, not visible to us, and believed it was possibly someone in the crowd who looked like him.

well, my WICKED CD arrived yesterday and I listened to it this morning.....I saw the show in SF and, since it became clear they didn't change much for NY, I skipped seeing it on my recent trip

it's always interesting to hear a score removed from seeing the show -- just the songs without all the flash and special effects -- and I must say that the CD confirms what I felt when I saw the show.....this is a very weak, mediocre score.......I am stunned by how 80's pop the music sounds and the clunky lyrics are sometimes embarrassing to hear......of course, the cast sounds terrific, I just wish they were singing more interesting songs

Warning to Dear Readers... I am about to be snippy. Please cover the eyes of the young and innocent. This post Rated S for Snippy content:

Oh William, you're a funny man. :)

Funny, you see, in that all of the other people I've been "snippy" to on the Tech board have chosen to lick their wounds somewhere else as opposed to feeling the need to talk about being wounded and wronged in the public daily discussion board. Perhaps, just perhaps, you're wrong? Also funny, oddly enough all of THEIR problems, in the end, seem to have been fixed but yours.

Funny too that you have yet to explain what it is you're doing that is getting incorrect or incomplete search results. I've asked several times to no avail. I can only assume that you've figured out by now what you were doing wrong and that the problem is no longer a problem. That would be so nice. If THAT were the case it would appear that the problem wasn't a site problem after all, but a problem on the user's end. Funnily enough, as I so snippily suggested in the begining, the problem would have been due to user error.

That said, if you STILL believe the search problem, or any others you may be experiencing, are occurring... PLEASE, oh please I beg of you, go to the Tech board and explain what you're experiencing in as much detail as possible. If you simply suggest there is a problem and your only response when I ask what you are doing is "well, I'm not the only person experiencing this problem" then I'm afraid I can't do much to help you out. I need to be able to see what you are doing and what you are seeing in as much detail as possible, especially if I cannot recreate the problem on my end. Furthermore, I've asked others to use the search function to see if they could figure out what in the world you were referring to and, funnily enough, nobody could.

As Craig so aptly pointed out, and as I have explained on many occasions (in which all dear readers but yourself seem to have understood), the REASON there IS a technical board is so a) there is a reference section of problems, fixes, questions and answers as to how this section of HHW works and b) so the rest of the DR's can participate in the daily discussions free of such postings.

So, and I mean it this time, one last time, what in the world are you searching for that returns incorrect or incomplete results? The catch to my question, however, is that you need to respond to it in the Tech board. *tag* You're it. See you there?

The reason I chimed in was because I have had the same problem (trying to search from the main board).

But re: the search function on the discussion page

I'm not sure if this is the problem DR WEL was trying to tell you about. But he had posted here the other day trying to find info about a book called "EVER AFTER" which had been discussed a few weeks prior.

A bunch of us tried to do a search and it showed either nothing (or only comments from the day before).  Shouldn't the search show when the topic was discussed weeks earlier?

And btw, DR Mark: I'm sorry if what I said didn't come across properly. I'm just having a bad day.

And how long has Simon been married to Elaine (SUGAR) Joyce?

Since 9/11/99

Yesterday the Times printed a lengthy obit for dancer Katharine Sergava, best known as the original Dream Laurie in OKLAHOMA!  Today they printed a retraction saying she is not dead, but is 94 and living in a nursing home in NYC!  Don't they check these things out?

I thought Bambi Linn was the original Dream Laurie in Oklahoma!

Bambi Linn was one of the dancers in the chorus of OKLAHOMA on stage, but not the Dream Laurie.  She was the Dream Laurie in the movie though.

Thanks to the DRs who helped me get the info on EVER AFTER which I could not get in the Search here.  I now have it ordered at Drama Book Shop here.  And thank you for confirming that this could not be found on the search even though it was discussed in several posts here about three weeks ago.

And now for something completely different.........

Oh Boy!  I'm excited!

I just got my new CD -- 50th Anniversary Edition of "The Robe" -- one of THE great epic film scores, totally remastered in true stereo (this was the first stereophonic film, "Fantasia" notwithstanding) from original master elements.

I'm thrilled.

I also get to leave work early today so I can go to my local VA clinic and wrangle with the pharmacy over my blood pressure prescription that has gone unfilled even though I requested a refill two weeks ago and am now out of meds.

I get these meds via Veterans Administration health care free of charge because I developed HBP (hypertension) in the military and am accorded a disability rating because of it.

I get to present my empty bottle to the pharmacist and wait for him to get my doctor to re-prescribe it.  I figure two hours ought to do it.

Sigh.

Not being able to see Hitchcock enter from the left is but another in a LONG series of reasons why formatted to fit TV screen versions of movies are just wrong! And every time I see a studio release a DVD in that format only (when the movie was widescreen) makes my blood boil.

While Mark's post may seem snarky (and we do love that word here) -  he did a tongue in cheek warning ahead of his snarky-like post.

And in all fairness - while taking the high road might be the way to go, one might also suggest that the instigating tone of the initial post that prompted Mark's reply was quite snarky WITHOUT any tongue-in-cheek connotation. I might be reading "too" much into it.. but it DID sound like WEL was taking a potshot at Mark in a very out of the blue manner.  I know that I, for one, would probably not be able to take the high road if it were me who was put in that position. In fact, there have been times that I have rebutted (and rearmed and relegged) with Bruce for similar type posts.

Either way - the technical board is where all of these issues should be brought up. And if there is a personality issue, perhaps that is best left to private emails.

As someone posted last week - this message board shouldn't be used to air laundry. In fact, airing laundry is not supported by this board. So I am off to the technical forum to ask why this board cannot air laundry!

No snow here but there have been forecasts that there may be some light flurries tonight. It has been COLD, however, so it feels like it COULD snow.

It won't matter to me one way or the other. I have a cabinet of DVDs I haven't watched, and it would be the perfect excuse to cut that pile down to size.

Captain Kangaroo was an "American institution."  He had daily visits with Grandfather Clock and from characters like Bunny Rabbit.  And he had sidekicks like (human) Mr. GreenJeans!

The Captain and his show ran on TV from 1955-85.  Bob Keeshan, who portrayed the captain, was the original ClaraBelle from "The Howdy Doody Show."

My favorite children's television host was none other than Marni Nixon.  She had a Sunday morning kids show with a bunch of puppets called BOOMERANG based out of Seattle in the early 80s.

I still remember the theme song...
A boomerang, a boomerang
What does it do? It comes back to you
A boomerang, a boomerang
Bing-bong-bang, it's Boomerang!
You throw a ball against a wall, and what does it do?
It comes back to you like a boomerang, boomerang
Bing-bong-bang, that's Boomerang!
We all have seen a trampoline, where you bounce so high
Then back down you fly, like a boomerang, boomerang
Bing-bong-bang, it's Boomerang!
It's a funny looking thing
Something like an airplane wing
And when you throw it ever so high
So high it seems to hide in the sky
It fools you with its special knack
Of turning around and soaring back
A boomerang, a boomerang
What does it do? It comes back to you
A boomerang, a boomerang
Bing-bong-bang, it's Boomerang!

But I have to say, I've never seen much Marni Nixon in TCB. :)

Wow, Jed, I had no idea that Marni Nixon had a TV show.

I have to say, and this is going to come off as blasphemy, but she really didn't impress me all that much as Guido's mom in Nine.  The full, radiant soprano from the great musicals of the sixties has thinned into a voice that I found almost annoying in quality.  It WAS cool seeing her onstage though!

I never quite got the appeal of Captain Kangaroo as a kid...he always made me think of a wrestler.

It's raining here in Olympia and I was out and about with my niece.  She rented some movie and I rented Ellen DeGeneres' new stand-up concert:  "Here and Now" on DVD...so that's what's in my DVD player.

In my VCR:  I checked out (from my local library) "The Swan Princess" only because I have the CD (I got it used quite a few years ago) and it has the singing (speaking?) voices of the fabulous Liz Callaway and the hunkalicious Howard McGillin!  I'd heard that the movie itself is not supposed to be very good, but I think that I should watch it at least once, especially since I got it for free from the library.

In my CD player:  "Sousa For Orchestra."  For his Thanksgiving radio show, Donald and Michael Betts (did I remember/spell his name correctly?) played a couple of tracks (or was it just one track?) from the musical "Teddy and Alice" that are on this CD (it's the only time that they've been recorded).  I really liked what I heard.  I checked eBay and found a copy and was the only bidder.  The CD arrived today after only 2 days!  Ron Raines also sings on one of the tracks!  It's really good...short, but good.  Only six tracks are from the musical--the other six tracks on the CD are Sousa instrumentals.

Great pictures DR Michael Shayne! Pic. #1 - MR. DRESSUP (only in Canada could a name like that be taken in total innocence) - was a particular favorite of my daughter's. Some years ago I received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Academy or ACTRA or one of those... It was flattering, but a little strange, as I was far too young to get a lifetime anything, plus I'd left Canada years before. But I figured out that they'd never given it to a woman before, nor anyone under sixty or seventy. In fact,  until I got it I called it "The Old Farts' Award".... Someone must have pointed out this rather old boys oriented world-view to the august members of the judging committee and they probably began searching frantically for a suitable woman to receive the award... when someone brought up my name. And the rest is history. When they called me to inform me of my win, my first thought was that I had some horrible disease that everyone but I knew about. Anyway, to get back to my point, I was flown to Toronto and received the award - very nice. BUT the high point of the evening was meeting Mr. Dressup - who also received some kind of award. ...Aren't you glad I'm back, kids? Where else would you hear such fascinating tales?

If anyone else starts using "What is it, fish?", I think there's a problem.

I had thought that Dorothy Parker was known for her "Dear Readers" usage in her columns of the 1920s in "The New Yorker." However, it was her reference to herself as "Constant Reader" that I was recalling.

And never was it more amusing than when Dorothy Parker, under her pen name, Constant Reader, reviewed A. A. Milne's The House at Pooh Corner in The New Yorker, with predictable, now-famous, results:

". . . And it is that word 'hummy,' my darlings, that marks the first place in The House at Pooh Corner at which Tonstant Weader fwowed up."

Tom, do you have an actual recording of Teddy and Alice WITH Len Cariou?
(Is it a legal copy?)

The CD, "Sousa for Orchestra," is actually a recording of music written by John Philip Sousa.  It includes six songs that were used in the musical Teddy & Alice, and are sung by Gordon Stanley (who was in the original cast, but not as Teddy), Meg Bussert and Ron Raines.  This CD has one song by the character of Nick.  Ron (who sings it) played Nick in the original cast.  So that one song would constitute an original cast performance!

I got Mom to get her  shot!  I’m so glad since I heard on the news tonight that they've run out of vaccine.  Of course her arm is hurting her right now and she swears that’s the last time she’s going to listen to me and get the shot.  That’s ok.  I have a whole year before I have to start harping again.

Finished up most if not all of my Christmas Shopping.  Whoopie!  Now to wrap it all.

Thanks again for calming my fears about LIFE.  I picked up a couple of stuffed animals today to go with it.  The mail lady will pick it all up tomorrow.

I read Juliana’s Journal.  I’m so glad for her. May it be the first of many, many times she is the star of a show.  I only wish the Millie tour was going to come through Tampa.  I would make it a point to.

As promised, the next cold front announced itself in the breeze today.  You could feel the change in temperature from one hour to the next.  We’re at 59 degrees as I write this and falling.

I guess no one remembers Miss June and Rommper Room?  Always be a Do Bee Never be a Don't Bee.

And of course, Mary Ellen, from our local Channel 13.  I was on that show for my B-day.  I think I was about 6 or 7 at the time.   I got to meet the weather man, Roy Leap and most of the news crew.  I was scared to death because they popped balloons on the show.

This is going to sound very silly but I am terrified of balloons.  Not the new mylar kind but the old rubber kind.  I had to go to a party where they tied one to every ones chair last year and thought I was going to die!  I was shaking so hard when I finely was able to leave.  I don't know why.

The movie "It" must absolutely terrify you.

How do you feel about clowns?

Clowns are fine.  Balloons--bad.  I know everyone thinks it funny.  I have a heck of a time on my B-day because they have them at the staff meeting for you.  I never WANT them so they put them on my desk.    I have to get someone to take them away.  I'm serious.  I can't touch them for fear they'll break.

My dear sweet departed cat named "Dickens" was deathly afraid of --- toilet paper spindles.

When a roll of paper was finished and I installed a new one, I took the spindle to my bedroom where Dickens was lolling on my bed.  He was about 5 months old at the time.  One of our favorite games was for me to put a sock on my hand which he attacked over and over...and he loved for me to upend him and make him mad...and then he would get ferocious and put my hand in its place.

I thought we could start something new, and I put the spindle up against his chest and blew into the end nearest me.

That cat totally f-r-e-a-k-e-d and any time he saw a spindle of any kind, he'd head for cover.

I think Mr. Mark Bakalor is doing a great job and has been nothing but helpful in our transitition.  Believe me, I'm as guilty as anyone for asking and expecting him to deal with problems while I'm not being entirely clear about the exact nature of the problem.  He doesn't feel superior, or have delusions (well, he has SOME delusions), he's just trying to get people to really be clear.  I ALWAYS think I'm being clear, but when he finally asks me to really pinpoint something I can see that I haven't been.  And I know for a fact that he has never bood anyone here.

I'm leaving soon - unbelievably long day, and I'm sure tomorrow will be, too.  But I shall be home to post tonight and I hope some of you will be here with me.

Speaking of strange weather (Were we?  Yes!), in Maple Valley, which is to the north and east of George and Ann and I (but not as far east as Jed), they had a bad windstorm yesterday.  My good friends who live up there escaped damage to their own home, but one street over from them, over 150 trees fell on that one street alone.  And here in the Tacoma / Olympia area we didn't even get a breeze!  Very strange!

Also, as I said I most certainly did not invent "Dear Reader" (Stephen King has used it a lot, as have others) but I've been doing the column thing since, I think, 1998, and I have used it from day one, am known for it, and am, I believe, the only one using it in an internet column.  Therefore, for this guy to suddenly throw it in (Mr. Wontorek fully knows who I am and what I do) is more annoying than the Radio Shows and Journals that have popped up since we paved the way.  I mean, I'm flattered and all, but I really would like to drop a safe on broadway.com right now.

Hi, gang,

Just a quick note so you all don't forget me in my errant truantness.

Busy day packing bags. The weekend should be calm. We have had some snow here in NYC so we will just stay in most of the day. I am scheduled to see Juvenalia, a new show at Playwrights Horizions tomorrow evening but otherwise, the weekend will involve long periods of sleeping, cuddling, drinking hot chocolate with peppermint sticks and other cold weather treats.

"It's me, it's me, my name is Pinky Lee."  Wasn't Pinky the one who would always rub his head and pat stomach?  Or was it the other way around.  I have vague memories of him.  I think he also had a stutter.  He was originally a burlesque comic who oddly made the transition to 50's children's host.  You can also catch him, I believe, in the film, LADY OF BURLESQUE starring Barbara Stanwyck...before he became a children's host.  He wore a lot of checks...checkered hat, coat, etc.

Canadian Televisions I remember seeing when I lived in Canada. Of course these are just some of them, and there is a lot more. Which I might post at another time

ADVENTURES IN RAINBOW COUNTRY with Lois Maxwell (Miss Moneypenny of the James Bond Series) Last one series but ran endless in reruns.

http://www.rainbowcountry.com/images/pics/sbenj2.jpg

The Beachcombers last 18 years but never a favorite of mine. Beachcombers was based around Nick Adonidas ( a beachcomber) and Molly Carmody and her family. Nick lived above Molly's diner which was called Molly's Reach.

BEYOND REASON  A most unusual game show featuring various 'psychic' types (astrologer, clairvoyant etc) trying to guess the identities of mystery guest using various things pertinent to their trade (for example the astrologer getting the birth time and date detailds etc). The series also took in other aspects of the paranormal via short films. Regular panellists included clairvoyant Irene Hughes, astrologer Geoff Gray-Cobb, palmist Marcel Broekman and graphologist Marilyn Rossner. Allan Spragget was the creator.

DR SIMON LOCKE aka Police Surgeon Sam Groom starred but the cast and plot kept on changing. Oscar winner Jack Albertson appeared in the first season.

FAMILY COURT My mother guest starred on this soap and I was supposed to be on the show but before my story line could be used it was cancelled.

FOREST RANGERS Adventure series. The members of the Junior  Rangers Club of Indian River help Ranger Keeley as he tries to keep the area crime and trouble free.

FRONT PAGE CHALLENGE Long running panel based game show in which the four panelists (after seeing a short film full of clues) tried to guess the identity of a mystery guest.

HOUSE OF PRIDE Drama series. Episodes in the lives of the various members of the scattered Pride family living in different parts of Canada, principally Toronto, Winnipeg, Montreal, Halifax and Vancouver. The various segments of the series were kept seperate. My friend Julie Amato was in the Winnipeg segments.

JULIE a variety series featuring my friend Julie Amato. I appeared several time on the shows.  The first time was when she sang a song to me "I Love You Because You're Trash" Got to meat many great US performers. The funniest being Phyllis Diller and the saddest being Peter Lawford.

KING OF KENSINGTON Sitcom. The exploits of Larry King, an overweight Jewish Store owner. In early seasons Larry had a wife called Cathy but from 1978 he had a girlfriend called Tina. Larry later gave up the store to his mum and started working at the Kensington Community Centre.

I know some DR  in particular might want to comment on this show.

QUENTIN DURGENS M.P. Drama series. Rural MP Quentin Durgens juggles his constituency duties in the small town of Hampton County with his role as a back bencher in Ottawa

See below for a picture. It was too large to post here

THE STARLOST a bad sci-fi series shot on video tape that laste a half a season before the plug was pulled Keir Dullea was the big star in this dud.

WOJECK before the was Quincy there was Wojeck starring John Vernon

I spent part of this afternoon and evening watching the Deanna Durbin movie I recorded off TCM yesterday: IT'S A DATE.

I was HORRIFIED at the condition of the print they showed: scratches all over the place, missing frames, dirt and dropouts. It was appalling! Usually TCM uses the finest print they can lay their hands on. If this is the best print of IT'S A DATE that Universal has at its disposal, it's close to being a lost film.

Honestly, THE COCOANUTS from 1929 looks better than this 1940 film. I guess I've gotten so used to the cleaned up movies that get released by the major companies on DVD that I forget what terrible shape most of their studio libraries must be in. Seeing this print really saddened and depressed me.

DR Michael Shayne - a trip down Memory Lane. Literally. KING OF KENSINGTON, of course, changed the course of my life and gave me my writing career. But some of those other shows you listed were ones I worked on as a kid actress (QUENTIN DURGENS, WOJECK, etc.). The last time I visited Toronto, I saw that the site of the original old CBC studio (where I worked on a wonderful non-musical SWEENEY TODD with Barry Morse and JEKYLL AND HYDE with Jack Palance, Billie Whitelaw and Tessie O'Shea, among other things)  - has now been torn down and is the site of a new condo complex. Which reminds me (naturally) of a silly story... My mother tended to get married and married... she finally decided to have a BIG wedding - #3. I was rehearsing JEKYLL AND HYDE the afternoon of the wedding and almost missed it because it ran over and Tessie O'Shea grabbed my taxi. That's how obsessed I was with acting - I would've missed my mother's wedding, if necessary.

DR Swishy mentioned that she had also not heard of Captain Kangeroo. What year did they stop making shows?  I don't know if they show repeats.  But if they don't show repeats and he ended before you were the right age to watch, then I don't find it that weird that you don't know him.

DR TFO - You have e-mail!

Well, good understudy rehearsal, good show.

I just wish we had more snow.  I really like snow.  Now it appears our neighbors to the north and northeast will be bearing the brunt of it.  I have some friends who are in NYC this weekend - I hope they remembered their snow clothes.

The one unfortunate thing about the snow here in the DC area tonight was the there were people who left the show at intermission - but better safe than sorry, I guess.  And it really wasn't - and isn't - snowing that hard.  Still more like a really cold, wet rain.  The box office also had a bunch of cancellations and no-shows.  Ah, well... At least "all sales are final".   ;)  -And, more importantly, with the way drivers around here drive - and can't drive - in the snow, at least it took some people off the roads.  We shall see what tomorrow brings, but I'm sure everything will be hunky-dorey by the time I have to head in for the matinee.

-Now I just have to plan what to do with my Sunday afternoon since we only have a show at 6:00 that evening.  Hmm... Shopping?  Movie?  Sleeping?   Laundry?  Christmas Decorating?  Hmmm...  And that also means I'll be back home in Richmond by 11:00! ;D

Well, that's all for now folks...

Oh, I did have some "arts and crafts" fun in the pit today during the show... it's amazing what you can do with a show flyer, scissors, scotch tape and a sense of goofiness...

DR TomFromOz:  Do you watch morning TV talk/news shows?  I saw a program tonight about naughty international bloopers.  One involved the allegedly most popular Australian morning talk show -- a man and woman co-anchor (he looks a lot like Helena Bonham-Carter's brother who appeared in the BBC's "Pride and Prejudice" as Mr. Bingham).  The female anchor starts to say something, looks down at him and breaks into laughter because his fly is open.

Five other people are logged on, but they must be engaged in pursuits requiring their hands for something other than typing posts.

I did so want to chat, but I'm throwing things out anyway in hopes someone might offer ideas, information.

I see I have moved us onto a new page.  My next two posts are strictly vanity.

Do forgive me, if you can....

I very much wanted to hit the 900-post mark before retiring for the evening.

Here's Pinky Lee. He was a crazy man as well as I can remember his show.

Isn't Pinky Lee the kid's show host who had a heart attack while on live television, and everyone thought it was part of his act?

Every now and then, friends bring up the Captain.  And I confidently chime in:

"Bob Keeshan's still around.  He does theatre in the Tacoma, Washington area.  I know he's played Horace Vandergelder, and soon he's doing Fagin."

::) And now I learn I was WRONG???

LOL

Noel, I laughed so hard I almost choked to death on my cranberry juice!

DR Ron Pulliam - Patty Duke I wasn't (although my name IS Anna)... No, you wouldn't know my teenage acting work. I appeared in minor roles in Canadian TV and films from the age of 14. As an adult actress I worked mainly on stage.

i realize I'm making myself seem older than I am when I say "kid actress" - as some of those shows are pretty OLD. I was a teenage actress, okay? Not Baby Rose.

Oh, Panni, I remember that Jekyll & Hyde with Jack Palance.  My mother got me up, out of my crib, so that I could watch it.

No Ron I do not watch morning television (or in the afternoon). Some of the "bloopers" they use are from years back too.
I suggest you look at the member list if you want an answer to your other question.
Did you realise that when you reach 1000 you go back to square one?

Should we all stay here until Jed removes his purple tights and reports in?  For some reason I just thought of "The Court Jester" and then went from that to Tony Curtis in "The Black Shield Of Falworth" and "The Purple Mask". I must need food.

Well, I shall now be off to bed.  Hmmm, I wonder where DR Ann is this evening?

Well, goodnight all (at this moment, "all" being me).  I'm off to bed because I have to get up early in the morning.  Tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) I have to help wrap gifts at the local Barnes and Noble as a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life team that I'm on (at work).  After that, I'm ushering for a performance of a local choral group.  Sunday night, I'm ushering for another show.  I'm busy this weekend, for sure.
