Well, you've read the notes, the notes flew by, by flew the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they just flew by, missed the house, and now who knows when they'll come home again?

I'm off now to usher for A Little Night Music.  I'm hoping it's good.  It's a college production.  Later. :)

Hope held out in one hand....and then it's hacked off by an axe.

(I hope it WAS good, though, George...one of my favorite scores!).

It was...very much a school production.  Not bad, but not great.  It's a fairly small theater, only holds 218 or so.  The "orchestra" was just a piano and a cello.  That's it, but they were very good.  The set was just the piano and cello on stage, chairs for the Liebeslieder (sp?) behind the cello, a bed on wheels and six chairs for everything else.  There were no props at all...other than the invitation.  The way they used just the chairs and the bed worked for the most part.

I really could nit-pick, but I'll just say that the worst directoral choice was that the director chose to do nothing with the Liebeslieder...or didn't know what to do with them.  First of all, there were six:  FOUR women and two men, but they just sat in the back behind the cello.  Except for the scene at the theater when two of the women are actresses, they did nothing except stand up and sing then sit down.  BAD CHOICE.  The second worst directoral/staging choice was how the scene changes were done.  For only having a bed on wheels and six chairs, they all took forever!  AND Petra and Frid were the only ones who moved anything!  There were a couple of changes where they had to move all the chairs out of the way of the bed, move the bed on or off, then put all the chairs back in place...and they moved the chairs only one or two at a time.  AARRGGHH!!

Other than that, the performers were okay.  Desiree tended to sing the early stuff an octave up in a legit voice :P but from "You Must Meet My Wife" on, she sang it where it was supposed to be.  Nobody had a "great" voice, but everyone pretty much was okay.  Not a horrible evening (for a three hour show ::)) but not a great evening, either.

In my CD player at work:  "Nights and Days" by Kevin Spirtas, "Strouse, Schwartz and Schwartz" then "The New Moon."

In my VCR:  tapes to tape tonight's shows.  I'm usering again tonight, but this is for a local production of The Spitfire Grill.  I saw a production in Seattle a few years ago (after I'd had the CD for a while) and absolutely loved it.  Hopefully, this will be a good production.

In my DVD player:  the complete series of the original "Battlestar Galactica" that I got from England (PAL, region 2) because it was a LOT cheaper to buy it new and ship it from England than to buy a US release. ;) Also, "Brokeback Mountain."

I'm here all alone at 8:03am.

I have lots of delicious (not salacious, just delicious) CDs from some place called Kritzerland. I will listen to them today. Also, on Wednesday I went to visit my vice, Academy CDs, the used CD shop, and someone must have been cleaning out their Sondheim collection. There were a plethora of Sondheim CDs. I had almost all of them, EXCEPT, the Terry Trotter Jazz CDs. I already own the Company and Passion Jazz CDs but I found Forum, Follies, Sweeney and Night Music so now I have all the Trotter Jazz Sondehim CDs! Hoo and Ray!

I will be heading out to Long Island after work. Seems the computer out there (an ancient machine in computer years since we got it in 1999) is sluggish and misbehaving. Anthony's mother has not been able to log on for two weeks and I'm being called to perform some computer maintenance. I think I'll be able to fix the problem but it means I will miss the planned late breakfast/brunch with Maria/Anna and Larry and Joe and William F. Orr. Have fun, kids, and play nice!

After working on the computer there will be things to watch. Rose (Anthony's mother) recorded Slings and Arrows for us so we will begin watching the six episodes of Season Two. I will also catch up on Sopranos. We may try to get the documentary Grey Gardens out of the Centereach library and watch that as well. That's a lot of movie/television watching in two days. We will be back in the city sometime on Sunday.

Passover is next week. I need to get two cards and mail them out!

DR Jane made a comment last night about the new WB show PEPPER DENNIS with Rebecca Romijn (hey i thought you didn't get the WB??).

The opening scene was not good. In fact my sister also said she almost turned it off after that scene.  And while she didn't like it that much after either, IMO the show greatly improved. Although i'm not really sure it would be your type of show anyhow.  But just thought i'd mention it's on again this sunday.

This afternoon I journey up the road 42 miles to see a friend in H.M.S. PINAFORE. I rather dread the drive and the show (though he assures me it's going to be well sung). But one does this for friends, and I wouldn't think of missing it.

Thus, I will be E&T this afternoon, but since the show starts at 7:30, I should be home before midnight and able to post some thoughts on it and the rest of my day.

DR George, I got the Rosie show, but I won't be able to get it dubbed until this weekend since I'll be gone from the house most of today. Should be able to put it in the mail on Monday for you.

I was reading about the show in THE ADVOCATE last night before I turned out the lights. You should enjoy it, and I'll watch while it's dubbing since it isn't likely I would have watched otherwise. I'm glad now I'm going to see it.

Especially for you FJL!!!

Quote
Here are nine of the funniest, though not recommended, tax-trimming attempts that clients have taken to CPAs across the country.

My son, my dog
Disc jockeys typically don't make much money and save even less. A few years ago, one approached Wyoming CPA Mike Lovelett for some free advice.

"I've got this problem, and I'm really starting to get nervous about it," the DJ said. "Several years ago, I was going to owe some tax, so I put an extra deduction on my tax return."

Well, reasoned Lovelett, managing director of Lovelett, Skogen & Associates in Casper, it couldn't be that bad. Then the DJ explained: "I put my dog on as a dependent." The radio personality had deducted his dog Red all these years, allowing him to escape owing the IRS on those particular returns.

But, unfortunately for the DJ and all other pet owners, claiming a dog or cat or any other furry family member is definitely disallowed by the tax laws.

And then there's:

Sex and the city: Then there was the client who approached Manhattan CPA Marc Albaum about a very personal tax matter. "He had made some money being a sperm donor and wanted to know if he could take a depletion allowance," Albaum recalls. "I told him he really needed to be an oil well or something like that."

Playing with fire: Herb Wakeford, a CPA in Raleigh, N.C., recalls a Pittsburgh furniture-store owner who, after years of trying unsuccessfully to sell his business, hired an arsonist to torch the place. The insurance company paid off to the tune of $500,000, which the owner dutifully reported on his income tax return. However, along with taking the proper deductions for the building, its contents and the usual business expenses, he also deducted a $10,000 "consulting fee" he had paid the arsonist. An IRS audit two years later landed them both in jail. The IRS disallowed the "consulting fee" and slapped on $6,500 in additional taxes, penalties and interest.

What, not the Barcalounger? Then there was the client who insisted on deducting the cost of his television and cable service, against his accountant's advice. "His reasoning was that he was a Spanish teacher at school, and the only reason he bought the TV and had the cable was for the Spanish channels so he could be able to teach his students better," Howard says. "I told him, 'Well now, not too many people out there can deduct the cost of their TV and cable, but if you can get away with it, knock yourself out.'"

Fun with livestock, Part I: Back when the Society of Louisiana CPAs manned a tax hot line, few inquiries stumped them. But Al Suffrin, SLCPA's communications and public relations director, recalls one that did: "We took a call from an ostrich farmer in St. Tammany Parish who called in to find out how to go about depreciating an ostrich," he says. Strange as it sounds, you can depreciate an ostrich or any other livestock, as long as it's used for breeding.

Fun with livestock, Part II: Which brings us to the tale of the crusty old Texas rancher who insisted upon accompanying his CPA, Raymond Lott of Lott, Vernon & Company of Killeen, to the rancher's first tax audit. When the rancher's tax depreciation schedule listed 15 or 20 animals as breeding stock, the no-nonsense young IRS agent challenged the old cowboy. "I presume you breed these animals?" she asked pointedly. Without hesitation, the rancher replied, "Nope," sending his CPA into mild tachycardia. After a sufficient pause, the rancher finished the popular Texas joke, "I've got a bull for that."

Go fish: There was a time when deductions were as plentiful as dinner mints. "Many years ago when I was a young clerk, a local CPA kept a very large glass bowl filled with receipts in his office," says Nancy Reynolds of Reynolds & Associates in Naples, Fla. "If a client came in and was a little shy of deductions, they merely dipped into the bowl and helped themselves to some of those glorious deductions."

Sic him, Fido: Sometimes deductions seem so logical they just have to be legal. "I had a guy come in one time wanting to know if he could deduct the cost of his dog food. His reasoning was that his dog was security for his house, therefore the dog food became a security expense," Howard says. "I kind of liked that one. The IRS loves that stuff."

And finally:

He works in mysterious ways
And when all other loopholes seem closed, sometimes only a higher power can help.

One fine February, a rookie tax accountant completed a slam-dunk return for one of the firm's old and trusted clients and turned it in to his boss, says Mary Anne Petesch, a CPA with Hagen Kurth Perman and Co. of Seattle. There followed several loud whoops of laughter from the partner's office.

It seems the client had accidentally lost his dentures when they fell in the toilet and had claimed them on his taxes as an act-of-God casualty loss.

Good morning, all. Another mild, almost-warm spring day here. Nothing in any of my electronic devices here at the loft... as you might suppose from my difficulty the other day in uploading a new pic, I haven't figured out how these various media players work. Oh, well. Gives me lots of time to read.

Speaking of which - 3 short blocks away from this building is a brand new LA Public Library! Just around the corner from the community center/pool/health club. So after my workout yesterday, I went to the library and took out three books - DOUBT, the Pulitzer winning play by John Patrick Shanley; Christine Jette's book about Tarot; and The Collected Plays of Neil Simon, Volume IV. And I have continued to enjoy the Natalie Goldberg book I started 2 days ago: Wild Mind.

I am really looking forward to it!

As a kid in South Carolina, we used to tell the "younger" kids stories about how we all had "Yankee twins" and that if we didn't mind our manners we'd find ourselves being replaced (i.e. switched).

We were used to northern (non-Southern) accents because of all the textile industry in our town, but we'd tell the little ones that in the north, people would poke fun at them if they were switched.

It passed the time....

LOVE the tax-deduction stories, above. I, myself, have gotten creative with that stuff, from time to time.. but it IS way easier to deduct odd stuff, if you're an actor or performing artist - which is its own catagory in the Profession code check box...

Wanna hear about BK's new play - but he tends to keep all new writing ideas close to the vest. Four characters, or four actors? Having come a month ago from a lunch with the aforementioned BK, during which we discussed my own 4-actor, multi-character play, my mind goes there...

I have been working on Lost in Yonkers - role of Grandma Kurnitz - she's 70-something, a real piece o' work - for an audition on May 6. Wowzaroonie! whatta character! She totally brings my father's mother to mind. The tight-lipped, determined misery and joylessness, the foreign accent used as a weapon to injure communication, the iron grip on the family... I'd love to play this character!!! So this audition gives me the excuse to start working on it, cuz sooner or later I'm gonna play these strange old ladies!!! Oh, boy!!!

PennyO, right now it's four actors/four roles, but I suppose that could change depending on where the writing leads me.

I managed to sleep nine gloriously glorious hours and boy did I need to.

Hiya, Bruce! I've gotten a good start on the structural changes you suggested for my play! Gosh, it's nice to have someone to bounce ideas around with. I'd love to hear about your play - nothing too revealing, of course... 4 actors: 2 and 2? 3 and 1? all 4 are women?

At this point, it's two and two.  As I wanted Deceit to be an old-fashioned thriller, and specifically wrote it in that style, I'm trying to do the same here and pay homage to 60s comedies.

Just popped in before leaving to say hello. I finished THE SHOCKING MISS PILGRIM while eating my lunch. Nice score, and a Grable musical that didn't feature dancing. The Gershwin score was very nice. Were these trunk songs never used before or did Ira take songs from their earlier musicals and construct new lyrics for them. I'll have to do some reading up on this collection of music for the film.

I changed out of jeans to get ready for tonight. Lo and behold, I took out a pair of pants I haven't fit into since I stopped teaching five years ago. My diet has brought about big changes! Not only can I fit back into these pants, they're a trifle loose! I couldn't have been more thrilled!

Great!  Thanks a lot! :-*

An old cowboy dressed to kill with cowboy shirt, hat, jeans, spurs
and chaps went to a bar and ordered a drink.

As he sat there sipping his whiskey, a young lady sat down next to him.

After she ordered her drink she turned to the cowboy and asked him,
"Are you a real cowboy?"

"Well, I have spent my whole life on the ranch herding cows, breaking
horses, mending fences... I guess I am," replied the cowboy.

After a short while he asked her what she was.

"I've never been on a ranch so I'm not a cowboy, but I am a lesbian.
I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the
morning I think of women, when I eat, shower, watch TV, everything seems
to make me think of women," told the young woman.

A short while later she left and the cowboy ordered another drink.

A couple sat down next to him and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?"

"I always thought I was, but I just found out that I'm a lesbian

My 50-something friend Nancy and I decided to introduce her mother to the magic of the Internet. Our first move was to acess the popular 'Ask Jeeves' site, and we told her it could answer any question she had. Nancy's mother was very skeptical until Nancy said, 'It's true, Mom. Think of something to ask it.' As I sat with fingers poised over the keyboard, Nancy's mother thought a minute, then typed,

A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and requests a $5,000 dollar loan for an upcoming trip out of the country.

The bank agrees but tells her she must give them some collateral before they give her the money.

"No problem. Here's the title to my Rolls Royce, it's parked out front."

The bank gladly accepts and gives her the loan. As the blonde is leaving they all joke about how she left such an expensive car as collateral for such a small bank loan.

After a week had passed the blonde returns to the bank to repay the loan and the interest. The interest came out to be $17.53. The loan officer asks her "Miss, why did you need the $5,000? We checked into your account and saw that you are a very wealthy lady."

The blonde replied, "Where else in New York City can I park my car for a week for only $17 and know that it will be there when I get back?"

Friday greetings!

Vibes for Mr. Richard Valley, with whom my niece Laura and I had a delightful dinner about a year ago, at Joe Allen following BK's reading in NYC.

I am late dropping in here because I had to be at the Dayton Marriott by 7:30am for the Ohio Library Council Southwest Chapter Conference, so had to leave home in what seemed like the middle of the night, in a thunderstorm.  The conference was surprisingly good - here are the sessions I attended:

"Cod, Smallpox, Murder, and More...Popular Historical Nonfiction" - the guy talked about books like Devil in the White City and The Professor and the Madman and handed out a great bibliography.  Anybody want a copy?

"No Free Lunch:  How to Work with Patrons Seeking Free Money" - presented by the person who does at Toledo Public Library what I do at Dayton Metro.

"The Courage to Weed" - presented by my boss and his wife

A truly frightening presentation by the chair of the OLC Government Relations Committee about a state constitutional amendment that will be on our November ballot - a tax-relief measure that would severely reduce state funding for local government functions, including public libraries.

The preacher's Sunday sermon was 'Forgive Your Enemies'. Toward the end of the sermon he asked his congregation, 'How many of you have forgiven your enemies?' About half held up their hands

He then went on to talk another twenty minutes about the need to forgive and then again asked, "'How many of you have forgiven your enemies?"

As it was past lunchtime, this time about 80 percent held up their hands.

He then went on to talk another twenty minutes about the need to forgive and then again asked, "'How many of you have forgiven your enemies?"

This time everyone raised their hands except one small elderly lady.

"Mrs.Jones," inquired the preacher, "are you not willing to forgive your enemies?"

"I don't have any." she replied, smiling sweetly.

"Mrs. Jones, that is very unusual. If I may ask, how old are you?"

"Ninety-three." she replied.

"Oh Mrs. Jones, what a blessing and a lesson to us all you are. Would you please come down in front of this congregation and tell us all how a person can live ninety- three years and not have an enemy in the world."

The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, faced the congregation, and said:

 "I outlived them all."

I have high hopes -- yes HIGH HOPES -- of getting my "autographed" CD set of "Goodbye Mr. Chips" today.

It was mailed a week ago today via UPS...and I've been tracking its (lack of) progress since then.

It was pretty much stuck in Virgnia until last night, when it miraculously appeared in California.  It is, allegedly, OUT FOR DELIVERY as of 8 a.m.

When I see it I'll believe it!

If I watch the first two, I may end up pulling "The Letter" and "Now, Voyager" just for fun.

CD:  BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY

DVD: AS TIME GOES BY, series 1, disc one.
I Hope we can get the entire series on DVD & not get left stranded as we are with MONARCH OF THE GLEN.  It is very frustrating knowing there are several more years left to watch on this show & we can’t get them-for now.

I really enjoyed hearing Mr. Kevin Spirtas singing today. He is now added to my list of favorite singers.

Then Mrs. Miller warbled to me for a while. Then I went home. Such an exciting day I had.

Thanks DR Jane.  Of course even though I feel cruddy and have warned my parents I haven't gotten things settled yet and it's a mess, I've been cleaning and organizing.   I mean it's my Mother coming. I don't think I'll ever outgrow wanting things to look nice when she comes to visit.

LOL, I finally decided to give up on trying to get anything more done. Mom will just want to rearrange everything.  She does have some good ideas, so it's not totally unwelcome

Good evening!

Back from my trip[ on the good ship PINAFORE. Before I go into the production, let me say my drive up was NOT pleasant.

I filled up the gas tank yesterday in anticipation of this trip. Once I got on the interstate, I glanced at my gauge, and it read that the tank was BELOW empty. However, the car was driving just fine and there was no "low fuel" alert on the dashboard readout. So, I surmised the gauge must be faulty.

Once I got to my friend's house and turned off the ignition, I waited a half a minute and then cranked the car again. Lo and behold, the gauge said I had almost a full tank of gas. What's up with that!

The phantom gas gauge strikes! I'm hoping this was an anomily and not something I'm going to have to have fixed. The car is still under warrenty, of course, but the dealership is a long drive across the city that I'd rather not make unless there is a serious problem. I'll keep an eye on it over the next week or so and I will take it in if it happens again.

I meant to add that the gas gauge worked just fine on my return trip home tonight. No sign of trouble.

On the way home, I listened to all the CDs that I listed on the Friday Media Check this morning and then I put in Al Jolson's THERE'S A RAINBOW 'ROUND MY SHOULDER. Not for all tastes, I guess, but I love listening to his renditions of these standards on this CD. There were the Decca cuts he made after the surprise hit of THE JOLSON STORY in theaters.

H.M.S. PINAFORE that I saw tonight did nothing to change my own lack of enthusiasm for Gilbert and Sullivan.

However, it was an excellent collection of singers, especially the male chorus which was superb and all the principals likewise had strong voices.

British accents were a come and go affair (and for many, mostly fleeting at best) and there wasn't much movement on stage making things rather static and more a concert than a theatrical staging.

Still, the set was very well done and the costumes were rented and seemed very detailed and right in period. Very well rehearsed and tight orchestra.

So, overall a fine production of the piece. I hope I NEVER have to watch or listen to it again.

For some reason, the HUNCHBACK jpeg I'm trying to attach to the Page Dance above won't load. I don't know if the file is bad or I'm doing something wrong but it won't load. Drat!

But, BK, you ARE mad as a hatter!

You should be hearing from my friend, Pat, regards something that might be of interest.

I just spent an evening at a little happy hour party at one of my neighbour's houses, meeting several of the folks in the neghbourhood.  Tres interesting.  I look at my watched and realized I had spent about four hours there, when I had anticipated only staying an hour and a half or so.

BAck to the grind and then perhaps watch another movie by the tiem I am done I would be an expert on several movies...

BTW JRand, I was gentle on Caroll Bakker. I rather liked her character. Karl Malden's character, I was looking for  a brickbat! Aside from some things that D.W. Griffith did with silent flims it is the biggest offender in my grouping....

That film did do 1 thing taht was Cheyenne... It is wrong in their worldview to take the life of another Cheyenne and you are exiled for that.

Hello Children!

Just dropping in, by way of the public library, to let you know that my computer passed away last evening at about 8:00 p.m., PDT.  Unfortunately, there seems little home of revival, so I will be checking in whenever I can snare someone else's computer for a few minutes.

See you soon (I hope).

Back from ushering at The Spitfire Grill.  If you ever get a chance to see this show, go!  It's a wonderful show.  The actors in this production were pretty good (most are from the church that produced the show, so they're not "regular" local actors).  The set was a simple diner.  The only real problem was the sound person.  It was all just a little too loud and there were a lot of pops when they spoke.  Other than that, it was a very good production. :)

Back from an excruciating evening of "theater".  More later, but might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  This is the lowest day we've had in ages - don't LIKE THAT!

BK, have you ever seen the original movie or the musical The Spitfire Grill?  If you have, what did you think?  If not, have you heard of it?

So, not to change topics or anything, but a bunch of friends and coworkers are going to buy tickets to see Wicked in Seattle!  We're getting them through the theater's group purchase agent and we should get pretty good seats!  They (the theater) needs a minimum of 20 people and so far, we've got 22 confirmed, and one specific person may get either two or four tickets!  It's going to be at the Paramount Theater and we (hopefully) will get tickets in the front part of the lower mezzanine.  I can't wait!  I know it's not "Broadway," but I think it'll be pretty cool. ;D

The tickets are $68 each and include all taxes and fees.  Regular tickets for the same area are only $70, but they have fees on top of that.  So, it's a bit of a deal.  Also, we have to pay at the time of the order, so everyone has to pay me before next Friday, when we order the tickets.  Since I don't have a credit card, my friend Margo (who instigated this whole thing, but who doesn't have the greatest organizational skills) will actually pay for the tickets on her card that gets frequent flyer miles and I'll write her one big check after everyone has paid me.  After...that's the important part. :)

Especially since 26 tickets times $68 is $1,768!!  I may not have any more debt, but there's no way that I could actually pay that at one time. ::)
