How long before he could sit down?

It was more a matter of how long it took for his mother's hand-print to leave his face.

Actually, the predictions were almost spot on except for the height of the storm surge. Estimates said 20 feet, reality was 15.5 feet. The surge protection for Galveston is 17 feet.

Another two feet of surge and Galveston would have been destroyed, the Houston ship channel severely compromised, and the oil refineries seriously damaged.

der Brucer

And, there was enough destruction to more than justify the mandatory evacuations.

The report I read said the estimate was 22 feet and the reality was 11.  It's all horrible, but one is catastrophic and one isn't.  Which report is true?

The run-up of pump prices was done at the independent retailer level - the oil distribution companies did not do a bump-up of wholesale prices. Most states will prosecute retail priice gougers given sustantiation. The Texas AG was on TV inviting complaints.

der Brucer

I have no doubt that's where the problem was - that's what I meant, anyway, and I hope they take these gougers and put them through hell.

Most movies do not justify a running time of two hours and twenty-seven minutes.

ASSOCCIATED PRESS

Quote

...
Officials were encouraged that the storm surge topped out at only 15 feet — far lower than the catastrophic 20-to-25-foot wall of water forecasters had feared, but major roads were washed out near Galveston, and the damage was still immense.
...

Much confusion was generated because there were different levels of storm surge measured at various points. Thre was a pretty good visual indication of what was happening when TV showed Geraldo Rivera standing at the 17 foot high Galveston sea wall with the waves spaying over the wall, but the sea level still a bit below the top.

The major catasreophe would have been the topping on the sea wall coupled with damage to the Houston Ship channel.

PS Notice how the IKE kept the LA Metrolink train disaster off the lead stories. So far, more dead in that one train wreck than in all of IKE .

Vegetable Soup - served as a dinner main course. But considering the huge chucks of beef chuck swimming in the bowl, it was more a very juicy beef stew. The soup pot sat on simmer for the whole day before serving.

Runner up was a stuffed lamb shoulder.

Engineer Caused Train Crash, Officials Say

Quote
A local teenager told CBS2-TV that he had exchanged a brief text message with the engineer shortly before the crash. The station reported that the teen, Nick Williams, was among a group of kids who befriended the engineer and asked him questions about his work.

Tyrrell said before the report aired that she would find it "unbelievable" that an engineer would be text messaging while operating a train.

Isn't it funny - the back of the box says the movie I just watched runs 145 minutes.  The imdb says 145 minutes, and yet the actual running time of the film is 139 minutes.  Somewhere along the line someone got it wrong, and my guess is that some dope at Universal checked the imdb instead of actually looking at the readout on the DVD.

Hi, all.  Susannah hit it out of the park.  Some incredible choices, everything from Berlin to Brown to Bucchino (wow, lots of B's).  Nice large audience, I'm quite relieved.

In sad news, I just found out my friend, the brilliant guitarist Jorge Zamorano, has just passed from Stage 4 cancer, which he had managed to fight successfully for several years (!).  A sweet man and one of the most incredible guitar virtuosos it's ever been my privilege to play with.

My condolences, JMK, on the loss of your friend.

I just finished watching BK's very own "The First Nudie Musical."  And then I watched the hour-long retrospective documentary.  I hadn't seen either in quite a while.  Still good, as ever!

And is it included in the Library System treasures?
