DR Matthew - The demo for SMILE was released publicly and legally as the second disc of "Howard Sings Ashman" last year, and the liner notes explain the origin of the recording (which bk already explained).

Jose, sorry to inform you that you are completely incorrect - the synth version of Smile done for Samuel French, which features the majority of the B'way cast, is NOT what's on the Howard Sings Ashman CD - that's a demo recording with Hamlisch and Ashman singing all the numbers with a piano.

It's part of PS Classics' "Songwriters Series" which also includes Jonathan Larson and Charles Strouse among others.

Oh, you are correct. I blame the fact that I'm posting from a bus at almost 3:00am in the morning. -But it's still a nice set to have. ;)
