I always knew if someone on the phone knew her or was just reading her name off a list.

Something I always have trouble with:

AMC Loews Theaters
Lowe's Home Improvement Centers
Lerner and Loewe

But I get the pronunciation right every time!

Okay, I'm watching "Behind the Candelabra" and Liberace is having a facelift...SPOILERS:  IT'S PRETTY GRAPHIC!! :o

It doesn't last long, but there are several shots of the cutting of skin...up close and much too personal.  At least when they show Scott's (Matt Damon) surgeries, those are not as graphic.

If a member of the Missouri Synod showed up in our congregation this morning they would have been shocked and not just by the hymns

How very strange!  I was totally unfamiliar with the term "Missouri Synod" until about ten minutes before I read your post.  I was watching (and crying) the National Memorial Concert on PBS.  I decided to look up my old friend Brian, who died in Vietnam, and who is remembered on the Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C,  And there, on his listing it said, "Religion:  Lutheran and Missouri Synod."

I am curious, one of my niece's names is Megan, which we pronounce May-gan. That is how I hear everyone here pronounce it.

But every time I hear someone in the US pronounce it they say Meh-gan.

She heard someone on tv pronounce it the second way and it freaked her out.

We say Meh - gan in NY

We call her M.

I would, also, say BerNed, but I would also ask the person how they pronounced it.

Another name I hear said two ways is Stefan.

On The Vampire Diaries they say Steff-un.  But here we say it Stef-ann.

We don't allow Stefans in this country.
