From DR TCB:
Quote
I have been invited to the callbacks for THE ODD COUPLE later this month.  Now I have to decide whether I am interested in going.

Why are you hesitating and for which roll did they invite you?

It would be one of the poker players, whichever the director happens to see me.  I am just not sure I want to do another show.

So we did go to the theatre - when we arrived at  6:30 ther ewas no one else inthe theatre - I speread my coat over the two seats we wanted (center center)  and went back out to the Nathan's counter wher the Vixter was waiting for our dinner .  When we got back in there was a young couple sitting  a couple of rows in front of  us  and just before the film started another couple snuck in -  so it was a respectful audience  just the six of us   :)

They have a Nathan's inside the theater?

Before I say good-night, I wish to add that one of my favorite unsung, unproduced and unrecorded songs from a Harold Prince show would be the song that Ben should have sung in "Follies": The Snood You Didn't Take.  This song encapsulates Ben's realization that things could have been quite different had he worn the snood for Sally, but alas he regrets he hadn't.  A rather melancholy song in which the singer is accompanied by oboe and slide trombone all the while singing in a Frankie Valli-falsetto set to a rockin' calypso beat.  Why, oh why, has this never been recorded, yet . . . .

Back from a great show and getting there was not fun - the traffic in this city is out of control and drivers are complete morons.  My twenty-five minute drive took and hour and five minutes.  But the show was wonderful and Richard and Elizabeth Sherman were there and loved it.  More in the notes.

And let me just say this about that: In 1969 when I was in the Lehman Engel workshop in NY, one assignment was to write a song for Streetcar Named Desire a show he felt could and should never be musicalized.  Our next assignment was to do the same for The Glass Menagerie - it was hard because it should not ever be a musical.  So, these buffoons think they know how to do it - it's preposterous and will die the death it should.

Just in from playing a run through of Jesus Christ Superstar for a local theatre group that needed a pianist this eve.  It was a fun read as I've never played the show before.  But it's my pal, ALW, how hard could it be.  Well... there's some interesting turn of events and time signatures and sudden tempo changes.  But all in all, it was fine.

I'd love some pudding about now.  But I think I'll just eat some peanut butter.

To add to DA BK's post, I saw the PBS program (which you may be familiar with) "Theater Talk" (http://www.theatertalk.org/) a few years back (2006?), the hosts and guests (I'm sorry I've forgotten who was on the program) discussed the then-new edition of Mr. Engels's Words With Music: Creating The Broadway Musical Libretto.  There was mention of the kinds of source material that could provide great drama but could not ever be musical.  This was a very interesting show, but I could not find it online.  However, someone out there may be able to find it as it is highly recommended by lil' ol' me.

Break a leg George!

Thanks, Dakota!  Tonight's show went quite well.  It's "Thrifty Thursday," where all their Thursday performances are either $5 (instead of $16) or Pay-What-You-Can.  The place wasn't packed, but the house was probably at least 2/3rds filled.  They really liked it...several adult loud laughers. :))

Time for me to leave for the theater.  Tonight we start our second weekend of "The House on Pooh Corner."

Be back later!

Have fun and may you have a great show!

Thanks, Jane!  We did!

I just got a call from Susanna Moross Tarjan; there will be a regional production of THE GOLDEN APPLE in the fall.

Cool!  What region?

I won't say anything more until they announce it.

Larry - The Lyric Stage in Texas announced it on its season

Fiddler on the Roof, Sept. 5-14, 2014
The Golden Apple, Oct. 24-Nov. 2, 2014
Annie Get Your Gun in Concert, Jan. 22-25, 2015
Lady in the Dark, April 24-May 3 2015
South Pacific, Jan. 12-21, 2015

OK, so I went to their Facebook page. The announcement of this musical scared me. Then I saw that they misspelled Sally Mayes' name and that didn't help matters much.

At least it's not called "The Glass Menagerie: The Musical". ::)
