Exciting news!! A friend of mine has a play in the Samuel French Festival next month and he was notified that the play has also been chosen as a finalist by the Actors Theatre of Louisville for their National Ten Minute Play Contest!!!

They've just announced on the news that a verdict has been reached in the Michael Jackson case. The media will go crazy in about an hour when the persons involved arrive at the courthouse.

Reading about lame audition songs reminds me of auditioning for GUYS AND DOLLS quite a few years ago. A friend of mine (we had done A CHORUS LINE together) was also auditioning, and he had just gotten his hands on KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN's score. The audition pianist took the music, and my friend proceeded to try doing "Dressing Them Up." It was a total disaster. The pianst wasn't familiar with it at all; I don't know what key it's written in, but it was quite beyond this pianist's ability,. and his constant wrong notes got my friend off and he went up in thelyrics and melody. My friend was talented, but that has to be the most uncomfortable audition I've ever witnessed.

For my return today to DVD Land, I chose BELL, BOOK, AND CANDLE. We got to talking about the play version backstage one night, and I remembered that I had the film on my to-watch shelf and hadn't gotten around to it, so I got the first hour of it watched this afternoon.

I've always liked the movie, but I've never seen it on stage. I think I have a copy of the play around here in an anthology, and I'll drag it out and look at it at some point over the next few days. Don't know how close the movie is to the play.

The DVD transfer seemed a bit too grainy for my tastes.

I have seen the play - and it doesn't quite have the whimsy of the movie - which is helped immensely of course by Elsa Lanchester, Ernie Kovacs, and Jack Lemmon - and even Janice Rule. And Kim Novak was so beautiful....a perfect match for an almost too old James Stewart.

But the play is a lot of fun....it just pales in comparison with the star power it must compete with.

Can you tell I love the movie?

I don't have my score in front of me, but I think it starts in A, but goes through a couple of other keys too. However, the tricky part is the rhythm - that hook. But once you know it, it just grooves. However, I remember the first time I had to play it, and I had to play it in my head once before putting my hands on the keys. It's a bit chromatic, so... lots of info to process.

Yes, DR Jose, the rhythm and chromatic changes defeated both of them. Perhaps he had just practiced with the cast CD and not without someone to guide him in the singing. At any rate, it was cringe-inducing, and I felt for him.

Everyone at work are all excited about what the verdict will be, which rather surprised me.

I, myself, haven't even paid any attention to the trial at all. I have never been a big fan of M.J. so I guess I didn't really get too caught up in it.

Same here. Even when he was the biggest star in show business after the THRILLER phenomenon, I wasn't convinced of his "vast" talent. He had a mild, pleasant voice, a SMALL skill at dancing, but nothing of any titanic proportions that I could figure out.
