Have had a nice afternoon after my walk with selected DVDs.

First up was another CSI: NY episode from the DVD set, and what made it interesting was that what appeared to be two cases actually ended up being one big case. This isn't the first time a CSI show had this kind of ironic conjunction of cases, but I enjoyed this one just the same.

Next, I watched a CSI episode from Season 4, an episode entitled "Suckers" which involved two cases with entirely different uses of the word. The first case involved what appeared to be vampires living in Sin City. The other involved a bogus art exhibit which folks thought was worth millions.

Then I put in DOCTOR ZHIVAGO. Warners has done a magnificent job with this DVD transfer. It is unquestionably the best the film has ever looked on home video. I have a laserdisc of it that's got muddy color and some print damage. None of that is present here: just wonderfully sharp, detailed images with robust color. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound might be a bit more hefty than the Dolby Surround track on my laserdisc, but it still needs more bass to my ears.

I didn't do any side by side comparisons; just operating on a yers old memory as regards the laserdisc.

One question: if they were going to shoot a new introduction with Omar Sharif, why not encode it for widescreen TVs? How stupid it is to have him stretched out of all proportion in a nonanamorphic sequence and then the film comes up with the correct dimensions? (It must have been shot in very low resolution video, too, because it was very soft with smeared color, too. For a second, my heart skipped a beat thinking the feature was going to look this awful.)

Vacuuming - Done. *It just simply amazes me how much stuff gets dropped/left/etc. on/into the carpets upstairs in the living and in the kitchen. Heck, most of the time it's just my parents and myself in the house right now. Who knew we were so messy?

I bought the DVD The Flesh and the Fiends, a version of the Burke & Hare saga. The villians are played by George Rose and Donald Pleasance. When I got the DVD it proclaims:

This special Double Feture DVD presents the original UK cut of "The Flesh and the Fiends" in a brand-new widescreen transfer made directly from the film's camera negative. Also included is a widescreen edition of the fabled "Continental version" of the film with added scenes of nudity and violence shot for the more permissive European market!

Whoooo-hooooo! Also fetures Peter Cushing and Billie Whitelaw.

Hmmmm....has Janis Paige's reaction to be replaced by Doris Day in the film version of THE PAJAMA GAME been reported anyplace? I have never read what she thought about it....I can guess....but I don't know for sure.

I don't think I've ever read her reaction about being replaced, but I know I'm eternally grateful she was every time I listen to her sour notes in "I'm Not at All in Love" and "There Once Was a Man."

And I saw Janis in MAME. I don't remember her having the pitch problems in it that she exhibited on THE PAJAMA GAME cast recording.

Her singing in SILK STOCKINGS seems fine, too. I think her "flats" on the PG cast album are part of the charm.....and I was surprised when I did the show that the songs weren't written that way....LOL...I thought it was on purpose.

I am dog sitting again this weekend...this time it is my niece's dog Piper...a 4 month old Cairn Terrier/Yorkie mix...his is a little charmer and lots of fun. He is ready for his nap now, so......

...he and I will plop onto the couch and finish watching my first Bollywood movie of the weekend...ALADIN AND THE WONDERFUL LAMP (1952) starring that king of mythological and fantasy films, Mahipal, and the more then lovely Meena Kumari, who looks so young in this film!
