And let us not forget that poor John Lennon had his life ended by a crazy person on this day, back in 1980.

Let's have everyone post their ten best lists for 2007 of anything they feel like having a "ten best" of - but maybe post them spread out over ten posts.

Or maybe not?  :)

Gratuitous posts are tacky!

I believe dinner is at seven.  I'm on my way to dry cleaners and Gelson's and I'll be back in about thirty minutes.

If it was DINNER AT EIGHT, Jean Harlow might show up.

At least they didn't yell at me this time for making some suggestions regarding improving our worship service.

Of course, I shan't ever again make suggestions regarding how to improve our worship service.

Today I am a Republican Department:  we got our "kicker" check today.  The Oregon constitution requires excess tax revenue to be refunded, pro rata, to citizens.  I was expecting a couple hundred and was pleasantly surprised to see almost one thousand.  I'm sure my commie pinko leanings will return unabated tomorrow.

Music that always makes me feel good:

anything by JS Bach. I adore Bach.

Almost anything by Beethoven.

In both cases I am so awed at their talent and achievement that it restores my faith in the human race--well, in parts of it, anyway.

Mozart feels slighted!

We're celebrating the day at different parties.

Joy's off to a girls-only party, which I always imagine involves lingerie, somehow.

She wanted to bring a little gift for everybody there, so we wandered into a fancy card shop.  "How about dreidels?" Joy asked, and it seemed like a fine idea to me.  Wasn't going to cost an arm and a leg.  But then she wanted to know how to play, and, having ended my education in all things Jewish with the pre-kindergarten at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue some years ago, I had no idea.

Elsewhere in the store, I saw they had crackers, and suggested those.  "Crackers?" Joy scoffed, "There's already plenty to eat."  I then had to explain the tradition of the Christmas cracker, because, apparently, between the two of us, I'M the expert on such things.  What DID those nuns teach Joy?

So, she called the hostess, who boasted that she was expecting 28 guests, which meant $50 worth of crackers.  And she really wanted to know what's inside them.

And all of this reminded me to wish a happy birthday to the man who's the holiday cracker around here.  He cracks a lot of jokes, and if you pull hard on both of his ends, who knows what might come out?

It is one of my not so secret shames as a professional musician that I find Mozart largely vapid and unaffecting.  A few others I know have shared their similar feelings with me--I know it's shocking, but there ya have it.

I sometimes get Happy Pearl Mesta cards on my birthday.

Strange.  I get Happy Sacco and Vanzetti cards.
[/i]

Interesting to note, that if you AOL Search, Sacco and Vanzetti, the number one search is for Peter Miller's film.  Wow!

However, having been to Mozart's hovel in Salzburg I will say it's a miracle he wrote anything at all, considering his surroundings.

As I mentioned in my review of The McCartney Years, Paul's laser-keen commentary on this song went something like this:  "I decided to take a 'go' at a Christmas song, since Christmas comes around once every year."   ::)

Those contrapuntal lines stick in your mind for weeks afterward.

He pales in this regard next to Wagner.
