For DRs who've been wanting to see snow:  Check to see if your local CBS affiliate is broadcasting the Cleveland/Buffalo football game.  It's being played in Cleveland and the conditions make me very glad to live in southern Ohio  8)

And now, I must leave to shower and get ready for the last performance of Nite of the Living Dead! The Musical!  I hope my voice holds out. :-\

After that, we'll have to strike the set and clean up the theater.  THEN I can come home and crash.  I'm sure I'll call in sick tomorrow.  I don't think that I'll be completely recovered by then. ;)

Sometimes taking aim at DR MBarnum's comments is like shooting fish in a barrel. At other times his eloquence is too mind-numbing just as it stands and needs no critique..

LA TIMES

Quote
Reading between the lines with Kindle

"People who care about literature care about substance and permanence," wrote novelist Jonathan Franzen, author of "The Corrections," in an e-mail. "The essence of electronics is mutability and transience. I can see travel guides and Michael Crichton novels translating into pixels easily enough. But the person who cares about Kafka wants Kafka unerasable.

"Am I fetishizing ink and paper? Sure, and I'm fetishizing truth and integrity too."

But how can truth depend on whether the words that express it are printed on an electronic page or a paper one? Are they not words in both cases? Confronted thus, Franzen remained firm.

"Yes, in theory, words are words," he replied. "But literature isn't data. The difference between Shakespeare on a BlackBerry and Shakespeare in the Arden Edition is like the difference between vows taken in a shoe store and vows taken in a cathedral."

Virginia Postrel comments:

Quote
…using Shakespeare as to argue that good literature must appear in printed editions is bizarre. Shakespeare presented his plays in oral form, with no footnotes and no flipping between pages. He never published his work. The folio editions came only after his death. And now they're online.

I am hungry for such a sandwich.

I have had two sordid dreams about my neighbor across the street in the last few days...the moon and the stars must be crossing Uranus, or something.

Mike, I definately think you might be right about Uranus!

I happened to attend the same performance as Hairspray as BK. This was my first in person meeting with him. I spotted him as he was taking his seat.

Well, at least you didn't spot him when he was picking his seat.

Although, I do have to admit, with this crappy weather, I'm also really tempted to stay in today and watch some DVDs.  God knows, I have plenty still in the shrink wrap.

If I had a dollar for every time Jose has said that!

Where did I get fifty million stories in the naked city?  Now that I think about it, isn't it six million stories in the naked city?  Just how many stories are there in the naked city?  And what if one person has three stories?

You were right the first time, Bruce. There are fifty million stories in the naked city because the stories have cloned themselves over the years. Blame it on inflation. Blame it on Jose. But the count has risen.

I'm feeling quite lazy today. Several friends phoned and we chatted. I stopped at the video store. I'll phone my cousin because it's her birthday. That's my lazy Sunday.

And NONE of my neighbors interest me. :)

I think it's "eight million stories in the naked city," but I, too, could be wrong. It's been months since I watched that DVD.

Then, I started watching some of the bonus features on the disc: how the puppets are made, what the sets look like, a typical recording session. They get about 8 seconds of footage a day with this stop motion animation.

I also listened to interviews with Peter Paige, Alan Cumming, and Wilson Cruz about working on the show. They only talked about the main characters they voice, but I believe they each do A LOT of voices for the final recordings.

Then I watched THE HEARTBREAK KID. Amazing how they turned that 1970s comedy adapted by Neil Simon into a typical Ben Stiller movie (i. e. he's embarrassed at every turn by everyone including himself), and since it's directed by the Farrelly Brothers, you know there is every sex and fart joke there that they can plant.

Great transfer and there are some laughs, so it's an OK rental, but the Charles Grodin original is SO much better. I still don't understand why they feel the need to remake movies that worked out well the first time.

Guess I'll head back down now to clean the guest bathroom and then settle back in for the bonus features on THE HEARTBREAK KID and then EXTRAS and DEXTER.

Today, I wore my Santa hat to work again.  Dixie, my boss, took one look at it and said "No.  No, no."

A few minutes later, she came up to me with a new Santa hat.  She didn't like the one I'd been wearing because Fletcher had eaten most of the puffball at the tip, and all that was left were these pathetic little white whiskers.

So I now have a new Santa hat with a full puffball.  When the puffball flops down to one side, it's a bit like wearing half a pair of earmuffs.
