Thursday morning greetings!  It's very spring-like here in SW Ohio this morning - hard to believe just one week ago we were anticipating the big blizzard of 2008!

Jacqueline Winspear (author of the Maisie Dobbs mystery series) gave a delightful presentation last night.  She didn't read from her new book ("I write 'em, you read 'em," she said.)  She talked about the aftermath of World War I in Great Britain and how women's lives were impacted.

It's a good thing her talk was so good, because my experience at Books & Co. was NOT.  This is a formerly-independent store where Richard and I have been shopping since it was a strip-mall storefront before DS Rob was born.  It's now owned by Books-a-Million and has opened a glitzy second location.  Last night's program was at the old location, where they've drastically reduced the program space and installed hand-me-down chairs.  It was uncomfortable and hot.

Book service was lacking, too.  I had no intention of buying the newest book (#5 in the series), but was prepared to buy #'s 3 and 4.  Not only did they not have any copies of #3, the clerk informed me that the only Winspear title in the store was the newest (hard cover, of course).  I had a paperback copy of #4 in my hand and had just come from the shelves, where there were multiple copies of the first 2 books in the series.  I bought nothing.

I must hie.

Whether or not there are additional noses in the house when I return, I'm certain either der Brucer or I will comment.

I think der Brucer needs his head examined!

The "additional noses" in question belong to a pair of Lab mixes - a small 55lb male named Wiggley and a "robust" 90 lb female named Hoopie.

Back story is that some women is the victim of spousal abuse and needs to vacate her present surroundings for now - she says she only wants a 60-90 day temporary home for the dogs. The dogs are neutered and up-to-date with shots and will not attempt to climb fences.

I had planned for her to bring the dogs down here at noon for an introductory visit (she keeps hers outside and bring ours out one at a time for a sniff and snarl meet and greet. But then I realized that if she wanted to leave the dogs, I would be confronted with bringing them both inside by myself - that would be chaos! Woody gets off work at 3, so I've reschedule the visit for 2:30 so he can be home in time should we attempt to keep them.

The main problem I foresee is feeding time. Seems the male will eat what he wants and then walk away from a bowl; the "robust" female wants to eat all the time.  Our dogs have one dinner bowl, and expect it to have food whenever they choose to nosh. We can easily feed the newcomers from their own bowls in a separate room, but I'm not sure about keeping them from commandeering our tribe's community dish.

I guess we play it by ear - if the six can co-exist for a hour or so the rest can work itself out. We always have the basement kennel in a crisis.

Was listening to Ben Bagley's "Leonard Bernstein Revisited," and noticed in the liner notes a very prominent thanks to our very own DR elmore3003!

Mr Bagley, oy! A funny man, but a very sad one, and way way way too cheap on his recording budgets so there was never time to fix any wrong notes from the players.  Working for him was hell because he was so cheap - of course I can say nothing about his recording period before I got involved in the early 1980s - but socially, he was charming, funny, a bit crazy, and a lot of fun to hang out with.  He really should have spent his last years writing a biography.

Good morning, all! I'm feeling quite lethargic today and I really didn't want to crawl out of bed.

Still, I have Toyland work, and I need to tackle the window blinds today.

Good morning!

We're headed to mid-70s today, and in checking the mail just a moment ago, I could feel the heat already upon us. I guess I'll wear a long-sleeved shirt out to lunch today, but I may need to roll up the sleeves later.

TV Reminders:

LOST! (and tonight's LOST pop-up show at 8 p.m. appears to be the last one of those. ABC is beginning a new short-ranged series there next week.)

ELI STONE

SMALLVILLE is new tonight!

LIPSTICK JUNGLE (is anyone watching? I'm not but was curious if anyone is.)

(And for reality gurus, SURVIVOR, APPRENTICE, etc.)

Favorite "insanity" movie is THE SNAKE PIT (though the ending is not very satisfying).

Favorite prison movie is CAGED. I think it's an outstanding movie and resented Warners putting it in a camp movie DVD box set as if it were a B-movie title.

And I also loved OZ as a television series on HBO.

As I mentioned last night, I have THE SMILING LIEUTENANT cued up to watch this afternoon. That is, unless something to review comes in the mail today. And even if it does, unless there's an expired street date to it, I will put it on hold until tomorrow.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Yes, "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest".

However, I don't think I would ever place "Ordinary People" in this category, especially since the two "crazy people" are already out.  But, I guess in some sense you could call that household of three a "looney bin", but it's certainly much more than that.

Another wonderful sequence in a movie that's otherwise not about the insane is in THE NUN'S STORY where Sister Luke assists in a mental hospital and comes up against a schizophrenic played by Coleen Dewhurst, one of the most harrowing sequences in film.

On tv tonight for me:

SURVIVOR

APPRENTICE

LOST

ELI STONE

And yes DR MattH, i know at least 3 people who are watching LIPSTICK JUNGLE.

I have been recording it. And while it's my least favorite of the Thursday night shows it is still keeping me entertained.

I am especially loving Lindsey Price who plays fashion designer VIctory Ford. I am loving her and her love interest!

I can't say that i was totally surprised. I predicted kristy, sayeisha (sp?) and even remi would be in the bottom. Of the guys david hernandex was the only one i thought did poorly enough to be vulnerable.

So i wasn't surprised to see kristy, sayeisha and david in B3. But i really did think one of the girls would go (mostly because i thought he was more popular). I'd heard a few people say he was their favorite. I can't say i care (since there was something about him i did not like). But it was interesting that his publicity did not keep him around longer.

Well, now it is time for me to wash my oatmeal bowl, and then I need to get a bit of practicing in.  The set of auditions I'm playing for this afternoon are "the finals", so I best be up to snuff for the "people behind the table, but, more importantly, for the "finalists" themselves.

Laters...

I'd never heard of it before. ::)

Not a fan of "Billy Rose's 'Jumbo'"?

In the "Circus on Parade" number, Jimmy Durante says the word in one of his lyrics.

"We've got a brobdingnagian rhinoceros
Who's preposterous!"

 ;D

Of course, the way Durante pronounces things, it might be hard to "hear".

To wit (i.e., it has always sounded to me this way):

"We got a brobdingnaggerin rhinosterous
Who's preposperous!"

 ;D

Lovely weather today.  I bought some grass seed in anticipation of filling in the bare spots....on the lawn....not on my head.

I watch Big Brother once a week.....I think it's on two or three times, but once a week is enough for me.  Those people are too much like some of the people I have to deal with in REAL life.
