Our first monsoon storm of the summer is occurring now -- so far just lots of wind (and dark clouds).

Good evening...  Boo was looking out at the fire flies tonight...she used to chase them when she lived outside, so I got out the laser light and she went bonkers chasing it around. It must have satisfied her, she is now grooming herself while sitting on my lap

Hooray!

The cool air came back just as predicted, and around 10 p.m., I opened the house up and am now enjoying delightful fresh cool air!

I listened to the audio commentary on SUPERHERO MOVIE. There were three people present, but the director did most of the talking. Occasionally all of them would get excited about something they were watching and talk at once drowning each other out totally, but most of it was easy listening albeit not especially thick with information.

We're supposed to have a cold front move through tomorrow and temps in the 70s on Thursday. Hooray, I love sweatshirt weather at the lake.

Then I watched the Blu-ray disc of 3:10 TO YUMA. Wonderful action picture with excellent characterizations and some folks in it I did expect like Alan Tudyk (who played a doctor and was grand). Of course, the picture was superb, and Lionsgate used a 7.1 uncompressed audio track. It was among the best audio tracks I've heard in quite some time.

I ended my evening with the HD-DVD transfer of SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. Much better looking than the sDVD I've been watching for the last couple of years, but the Dolby DIgital Plus 5.1 audio track wasn't as involving as the regular DTS 5.1 track. About halfway through the movie, I switched over to it for good.

I expect to get those Criterions tomorrow, so I'll start with the shorter of the two: PATRIOTISM.

I also got another review box set today - a 7-disc set of the animated TRANSFORMERS. Argh!

JUST NOT SO!

From the very onset (June12 thread) I disussed, and posted clips, of the lack of certainty of the source - you even taunted me with 'What do you mean, "believe", aren't they sure?"  All detailed print media and cable news stories have noted that the CDC was still lacking definite proof of the source of contamination and that tomatoes were just the "likely" suspect. If you think the media never reported the "maybe" element, it must be because you just read headlines or listen to news-show teasers.

der Brucer

You are correct - I don't ever get beyond the screaming headlines and the reprehensibly over-dramatic teasers.  For such a "likely" suspect, they caused an awful lot of trouble and they are now admitting for no reason at all.  They may as well have chosen squash or cucumbers.

TOMATOES STILL NOT OFF THE HOOK!

LA TIMESder Brucer

You're the perfect audience, aren't you? :)

What I get is that they don't have a fershluganah clew - they're grasping at straws.  A few people who got sick said they'd eaten tomatoes.  That was their entire intake of food?  Tomatoes for breakfast, tomatoes for lunch, tomatoes for dinner?  Me no believe.

Forewarned is forearmed:  it has virtually nothing to do with July 4.  :)  (I reviewed it last week).

No, due to DVDTalk's "spread the wealth" modus operandi, another reviewer did, but I think his review is live, also.  I have to say, it seems to be only the Criterions that DVDTalk gets so soon--it's quite a scandal how late some of our other major studio screeners have been arriving since the site was sold a few months ago to a big conglomerate.

I watched a very interesting DVD earlier - probably won't report on it in the notes for obvious reasons, but I watched the UK college production of The Brain.  It was fun to see it - way too long for its own good (both act one and two were about ten minutes longer than they should have been, mostly due to slow scene changes and looooong pauses between lines).  Some of the performances were very good - the narrator/Professor, the Joyce (an black actress - excellent voice) - the Zubrick was sort of from Tim Curry-land from Rocky Horror, which was interesting.  The Brain was interesting, too - a little Benny Hillish, which isn't a bad thing at all.  They used the full band, so it sounded good.

Nice to have a new fresh production.

I guess it's a testament to good writing that various groups can "take ownership" in different ways and still have a hit on their hands.
