SOMEONE LEFT THE CAKE OUT IN THE RAIN

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had runny icing, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - someone left them out in the rain.

It has yet to be determined where and how Spike Lee will show his film of Passing Strange.  It could hit the cable TV circuit - most likely HBO, Showtime, etc. - or it could also go the movie theatre route.

I'm just wondering if Spike Lee will be able to tape the show two additional times without an audience - as has been reported - between now and when the show closes.

As ambivalent as I was about the CD, I am really looking forward to the filmed version.  Having a chance to see everything in context makes it a lot easier to understand what's going on.  And I just love theater...even though a DVD isn't the same as actually "seeing it live," it's a good enough approximation for me. :)

And now, since I can barely keep my eyes open, I am going to sleep.  I only got caught up to page 8 or 9 yesterday, it won't do me any good to try and read it now.

So, good night, all!

Now playing on my iPod, The Carpenters singing I Just Fall In Love Again - rather Miss Karen Carpenter singing - I sometimes forget just how much I love this woman's voice and how she is a great interpreter of song.  What a shame she could not defeat her problems - oh, the music she could have made.

Karen's recording of "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" is my favorite.

MBarnum - get your bus ticket to LA:

LATIMES

Quote
Five years ago, Jay-Z performed on a track called “Beware of the Boys,” a remix to the bhangra song ”Mundian To Bach Ke,” by the hugely popular Indian artist Punjabi MC. Although this type of fusion between rap/hip-hop beats and traditional Indian folk-dance music had been around at least 5 years prior to that song, and gaining steam in the dance clubs of London and NYC, it didn’t really make that huge a dent elsewhere.

But don’t be mistaken, bhangra is alive and well. Especially to fans of Bollywood films. Friday night, the Blue13 Dance Company will offer free bhangra dance lessons at downtown’s Music Center, followed by a bhangra-DJ dance party.

And if you have any spare change, you can get Orchestra seats for WICKED for a mere $172

No DVD pklans for the weekend as I watch one last night. It was a film called The Man From Earth and it was the last screenplay by Sci Fi writer Jerome Bixby (He of Star Trek [OS] and the original Twilight Zone)

It is about John Oldman a university professor who claims to be 14,000 years old. He is moving on as he does every ten years when people start to realize he doesn't age.

Basically a one set, eight character film with some "philosophical meditation" about life and religion. With an interesting plot turn and an interesting reveal (not really a twist). It is a lot of talk talk talk.

A cerebal science fiction film without special effects, bombastic music scores and not one CGI shot in the entire film.

I do recommend it. I had never heard of the film and the plot description intrigued me. I rented it from NETFLIX.

Good morning, all! I have a long overdue visit this morning to my barber, and short stop at the 42nd Street NYPL, then a trip to the Lincoln Center NYPL, where I will make another try for the long lost BABES IN TOYLAND scrapbok, and then back here to finish up (hopefully) the notes to the Appendix of the critical edition.

Last night I rewatched SAVED, which I've been wanting to see again since seeing the musical version. I thought the film's ending was far superior in its tension and mood, but I found the musical to have some wonderful moments.

DR edisaurus, Martin Gardner's ANNOTATED ALICE was one of my favorite reads during college, and I must have read it many times. I've got the the latest two editions, but I've only skimmed them.  I recently made a list of the ANNOTATED books in the sseries I don't have; I think there are four.

DR FJL, follow the email instructions ASAP. Thank you.

TOD:
DVD:  2 Netflix movies should be arriving today, CARMEN (Glyndebourne Opera)
CD: several live performances of Jerome Kern shows: THE CAT & THE FIDDLE, THE CITY CHAP, SHE'S A GOOD FELLOW, SWEET ADELINE, Guy Haines, Offenbach, The Palm Court Theatre Orchestra
    VCR: cheap porn

Well, I've made it through the 1st week on the new job and haven't died yet.  :)  Still somewhat overwhelmed, but feel better a little this morning after some sleep.  Tonight going to The Police concert with Elvis Costello at the Clark County Fairgrounds...should be fun!  Then a school reunion tomorrow night.  Busy weekend, but at least I can sleep in tomorrow!  Have a great day and weekend! :)

Rosalind Russell is the Star of the Month on TCM, and I am enjoying watching some of her early films, early in the morning.  I like her best in comedy,  but she could do a drama as well....

And I will ALWAYS remember her response in MY SISTER EILEEN, when she finally got a date and her sister was ironing her skirt and asked:  "Which way should I turn the pleats?

Russell took a perfect pause, rolled her eyes, and said: "Toward Mecca."

I am thankful for all of the OPENING NIGHT vibes from everyone here at HHW...they indeed did the trick.  Mr Talk Slow actually knew MOST of his lines, still talked a bit slow in spots, but he was much improved.

He wouldn't talk to anyone before the show, ME included, barely joined the circle at Half Hour, and then after the show when I talked to him, he said:  "I told you I would get, I don't know why you were worried."  And I guess he really doesn't.

Thank you DR ELMORE....they are much appreciated.

Of course the same people who walked out of FOOTLOOSE because they thought it was "the one with the monkey" walked out of ALL MY SONS last night because they thought it was the "Fred MacMurray."
