About halfway through our meal, an "older" couple was seated next to us.  It turned out that they were from Australia - from Melbourne, in fact!  They are over here in New York on holiday for about five weeks.  One of their sons has a house up in the Hudson Valley, so they've been going back and forth between there and city a week at a time.

Of course, I just had to tell them how much I loved Australia - and Melbourne - and the Australian chocolate!  :)

So very hot and humid now. It's amazing that a few hours ago, it was cool and pleasant. That's the South in the summer.

I checked with the bank and the post-dated check did indeed clear today instead of tomorrow, so I've already transfered that into the proper account.  The other check was not Fed Exed last night, but was Fed Exed this morning, so I'll have it in the morning.

bk - Post-dating has no effect on when a check clears.  Any check will start "processing" as soon as you deposit it - especially since post-dating is not kosher.  All that matters to the bank tellers, magnetic number readers and the computer system are the bank's routing number, the account number and the amount.  Yes, some people do post-date checks, but, hopefully, they will tell you if you really should wait to deposit the check until the date on the check, if you get my drift.

It started out weirdly, but seems to have improved and is improving.  Lauren called me and said I should not come to the reading this evening - she said it's REALLY bad.

If only some of my friends were that considerate.  ;)

While I cooked lunch, I continued with A FEW GOOD MEN on Blu-ray. I had started it some days ago and watched a little more, but the trial part hasn't even begun yet, so there is still much to see. Probably will take me the rest of the week to finish it.

I have had tellers refuse to accept checks for deposit that were post-dated.  I guess the answer to that is to use the ATM for such transactions.  :)

Next, I watched Sunday's MAD MEN while I ate lunch. Wonderful episode, really worked up to a highly dramatic conclusion for both Don and his wife and for Peggy.

I will say again that the show is SO much more enjoyable to watch, so much richer in all that period decor and design in high definition.

First adult book, if it's considered such, was TREASURE ISLAND. If we're talking about something truly adult, I guess it would be FROM HERE TO ETERNITY which my mother had to sign out for me from the local library because it was in the restricted room which high schoolers weren't allowed to check out from. I guess I was 15 or 16.

Next, I finished LBJ which was so amazing to see the rise and fall so quickly. And so agonizing to live through all of those riots and the escalation of the war once again.

Very well done, but I was glad to be done with it.

I'm glad she isn't claiming a gluten allergy, as some do.  Allergies and intolerances are very different things, but some intolerant people seem to think that saying "allergy" is the only way to get other people's attention, and get quite huffy if anyone suggests otherwise.  (Yes, I've had customers...  :P)

To be more precise, my friend has Celiac Disease - which is basically a very severe case of gluten intolerance, and is sometimes categorized as an auto-immune disorder.

So, unless she really wants to double over due to gastro-intestinal pains, she really does have to be careful about ingesting any gluten.  Thankfully, she's one of the "sane Celiacs" - there are some truly almost-militant ones out there.  Her gluten intolerance hasn't made her intolerant to other people - or vice versa.  ;)

*And did you know that Ghirardelli White Chocolate Chips contain gluten?!?!?!

**Which is the reason why she couldn't have the "Snowy Chocolate" gelato at Cones after our risotto fest.

I got about 25 minutes of NIXON watched, and I was pleased that it's only one disc, about 170 minutes, so I should be able to finish it this evening and possibly move on to Jimmy Carter.

I truly loved the closing minutes of this week's episode.  Some of the most emotional scenes so far in this series.  -And it's nice to see more of Don's family life this season too (so far).

I believe she has, and, actually I've tried a few of their products myself.  I forget which show I was doing, but there were a couple of gluten-intolerant people in the cast, so the stage managers always made sure to have gluten-free snacks available during rehearsals.  The chocolate chip cookies were OK.  The Chocolate-Chocolate Chip cookies were a different story, and not a good one.  ;)

Sometimes I claim an allergy to something because I want people to quit hounding me to eat something and they won't accept "no thank you" for an answer. For example: when I am trying to lose weight and someone shoves a brownie at me insisting I can have a taste.

TOD

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Since I had already devoured all the Sci-Fi and Mystery stuff in the Children's Section of the Public Library, the librarian bent the rules and introduced me to Burroughs - naturally I read the whole series (I was about 11 at the time). First "Adult" book was probably my Mom's copy of Forever Amber.

When I was in Charlottesville this past Saturday, they served home-made(!) sauerkraut with the brats (wursts).   Soooooo good that I ended up having a second helping of just the kraut.

Could you develop an allergy to Game Wardens?
