You know, I did not understand a word of this!
Well, let's see....what I got out of that statement was:
That "Candide", for all intents and purposes, IS an opera.
That the production in 1999, for all intents and purposes, did not present it in a manner that was true to its operatic pedigree.
That the singers could not sing the score as it was meant to be sung.
That he was filled with constant doubt as to whether the singers would hit the proper notes during an
a capella (i.e., sans orchestra) start to a song...and whether the notes they did hit would match the key the orchestra would be in when it started playing.
That, on the whole, he considered the entire production to be a huge waste of time.
But I've been known to be wrong.
