At lunch today, acquired an "Easy Transfer Cable" that is supposed to make moving stuff from the old PC to the new PC... Well, easy.

We shall see!    :P

I'm trying to listen to Candide AGAIN, this time the 1999 Royal National Theatre Cast.  Every time I attempt to listen to the musical, I come to the conclusion that it really seems like a Can-Don't.

I've been a-listening to Ricky Ian Gordon’s operatic setting of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.

A downer of a story, of course, but there's some mighty fine music in there.  And much more accessible than some of this composer's previous works.

I've been thinking about getting this.  So, you'd recommend it??

It's definitely more opera than musical theatre, but if your taste runs at all in that direction, I'd say a definite "yes"!

I saw the production, and I wanted to stand and yell "it's an opera parody" because nobody in that production sang well enough. You don't listen to a singer do "Glitter and Be Gay" and wonder if she'll have the high E-flat or wonder if, after the a cappella cadenza to "You Were Dead, You Know," the singers will be in the same key as the band.

Every September 3rd I visit here just to see whether I still exist or not, and today . . . it's . . . finally . . . happened!

I am non-existent!

Just wanted to say thanks for all the birthday wishes and to send my greetings in return, from the "space BETWEEN the spaces."

You know, existence isn't all it's cracked up to be.  Someday you'll all understand.

Thank you, DRs derBrucer, Matthew, and George for the birthday greetings.

And I'm keeping my fingers crossed about Hanna myself. Having survived Hugo, I'm SO terrified that I won't be as lucky if Hanna comes through with anything like a similar force. There was destruction all around me - literally trees through people's roofs beside, behind and across the street from me, and despite having four huge trees in my yard, all I had was a few dead branches in my front yard.

I had friends who saw "Graps of Wrath" and loved it.  I'm not a fan of the composer.

I did manage to watch five episodes of MEDIUM this afternoon which leaves 9 left to watch in the package. I won't finish them today, but should have no trouble finishing them tomorrow.

There's that wonderful episode where Allison dreams about a deaf girl and goes deaf herself. A horrifying situation featuring Stphen Culp as the father of the kidnapped girl.

There's that excellent episode that had Bridget making friends with the telephone solicitor in India and warning him about his house being broken into. (And that wasn't even the major story in that episode).

The only bonus features so far have been four shows that had deleted scenes which had commentary by the creator-producer. They were right to cut the scenes as they offered nothing of interest.

I noticed that the bonus featurettes are all on the last two discs which I haven't gotten to yet.

You know, I did not understand a word of this!

Well, let's see....what I got out of that statement was:

That "Candide", for all intents and purposes, IS an opera.

That the production in 1999, for all intents and purposes, did not present it in a manner that was true to its operatic pedigree.

That the singers could not sing the score as it was meant to be sung.
That he was filled with constant doubt as to whether the singers would hit the proper notes during an a capella (i.e., sans orchestra) start to a song...and whether the notes they did hit would match the key the orchestra would be in when it started playing.

That, on the whole, he considered the entire production to be a huge waste of time.

But I've been known to be wrong.

And just in case they check in today, Happy Birthday to DR Joy and DR Siegerson Holmes, whom I saw logged in a couple days ago.

I'm pleased I'm not alone in noticing when Herbert (aka DR S H) logs on.

Any idea why he would visit today and determine that he is "non-existent"?

That's close; I think CANDIDE is exactly what it was billed to be in 1956, a comic operetta, rght up there with Gilbert & Sullivan and Jacques Offenbach.

Otherwise, I think you got it. By George.
