Thanks for all the info about using aftershave. I had a feeling it was unnecessary. But this person seems to think it is. And is making me very sick each time!

Also re: costco. After my niece found out about the samples she liked that better than eating at the restaurant.

But i will say that a ton of people eat at the restaurant part here. It's very busy. aNd the food is pretty decent. I actually had no objection to going there, especially since i know how much my niece loves it.

But oddly enough my aunt hates the new restaurant just as much!

Tuesday morning greetings! I am at work today, where there IS power, but left my family at home, where there is NOT. Yesterday was my regular day off for the week, so at least I could be with them and help with some clean-up.

It has been a most interesting 48 hours and appears that the interesting-ness will continue for a few days. Cincinnati and Dayton are in better shape than Butler (where we live) and Warren Counties, the two between those bigger cities.

We do, fortunately, have hot water and a TV and radio that we can run on batteries. Also, our land line phone is working, as are all the cell phones (which we can charge in the cars).

We lost a lot of limbs from the old trees around our house, but there was no damage to the house. Richard, Rob, and Mary Linda did a great job getting most of the debris cleaned up in time to be picked up by the trash crew today. I helped as I could and kept folks fed from our rapidly-thawing freezer. We ate up the ice cream Sunday night and the steaks last night (cooked on the outdoor grill). What we'll eat tonight is anyone's guess.

Blessed relief from Indian summer! It's very cool, and it had been raining hard earlier this morning, but it's just dripping rain right now. A high of only 72 today, so the doors and windows will be open all day long.

I had something very strange happen yesterday that has never happened before to my knowledge. I went into my bathroom to wash my hands before taking out my contacts, and I had no water at all, out of either the cold or hot tap. It was just like there was no plumbing in my house at all. I looked outside to see if there were city maintenance workers in the street, but I didn't see any. I got a trickle of water out of the hot tap in the kitchen, so I washed my hands in that (I was going to use bottled water if I had to).

About thirty minutes later, everything was back to normal. That's one of the weirder experiences I've had in my life.

Due to the demands of this reviewing job, I'm cutting a fair number of TV shows from my rotation this season. Though I will occasionally watch them if other shows are in reruns or bite the dust that are on opposite them, here are the shows that I will no longer be watching regularly each week: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, CSI: MIAMI, HOUSE, LAW & ORDER: SVU (if ELI STONE gets cancelled quickly, I'll go back to SVU), PRIVATE PRACTICE, CSI, MY NAME IS EARL, COLD CASE.

If I've had any awful food at restaurants before, I've blocked it from my memory. More often than not, it's mediocre rather than inedible.

However, the worst dining expierences I've had were either due to poor service or inappropriate behavior from the people I was dining with.

I remember a particularly nasty time in a restaurant in Tampa when some (former) friends got drunk during dinner. We had a very elderly waitress who was slow (but she got everything right; she must have been 65-70 years old). One of my drunken friends continually said rude, cutting things to her about the service, and I just found it appalling.

Our friendship ended during that trip after I confronted the rudest of the guys about his behavior. I never traveled with either of that couple again.

Thanks, DR Singdaw. We've been affected more by Ike than we expected and, unlike those in Texas, we had no warning. One of the challenges getting power back on here is that a lot of crews were sent to the Gulf Coast in anticipation of problems there and they're being recalled.

All those L.A. officers on the roof of that mall and not one of them aimed at the sniper's head? It was painfully obvious he had body armor after the first few rounds. But seven officers are firing dozens of rounds and nobody figured out that the only target was his head? Not one of 'em? And when someone said "Shoot the bag", why didn't they actually shoot at the sniper's hand which was holding a pipe bomb? All that supposed talent and they couldn't hit the sniper's sizable head or hand and he was kneeling in an unmoving, fixed position? After that, they removed the wounded officer from the rooftop and took him out to some isolated parking lot where a NON-EMT helicopter flew in? REALLY? No medical personnel for a fallen officer...AT ALL? And when they were ready to go, the man the wounded officer had saved positions himself in the door to say fumbling words -- words that took 25-30 seconds away from the possibility of saving his co-worker's life? That final few minutes represented one of the most incomprehensible enactments of complete ineptitude among professional law enforcement personnel I ever hope to see again. MattH, I had the exact same thing happen here with no water, and I wrote about it back then because it was so weird. I called the DWP who told me that the pipes had frozen and would unfreeze quickly, which is exactly what happened - took an hour.

Beyond bizarre, I'm telling you. It was around 6:30 p.m. so there was no one to call, and I thought I'd just wait it out. Thankfully, all seems well now.

It is POURING down rain! The sky was starting to clear some and the rain had gone to a trickle, and then, it got dark again, and the bottom fell out. This looks to be another day of multiple inches of rain.

I've had plenty of bad dining experiences in terms of service - several of those times I've walked out of the restaurant, and other times I've mad a huge stink about it.

One of my worst dining experiences was when I was taken to an Indian restaurant back in the early 1970s. I'd never had Indian food and my cousins said I'd love it extra hot. And that's what we all ordered. I took one bite of whatever I had and that was the end of that. I thought I was going to die, my taste buds were certainly dead, I coughed for about twenty minutes straight, and drank about sixteen glasses of water and Diet Coke. And I've never eaten Indian food since.

One other I can remember, another meal with my cousins, was a Mexican restaurant where I was convinced to try the Chicken Mole. One bite of that particular Mole sauce was like eating fresh vomit and that was the end of THAT meal.
