Yesterday, der Brucer took our car over to the DMV for new registration tags. In the process, they did a check on the car and found that the right brake light wasn't working. It's been fixed now, and everything is working fine (and we won't need to reregister the car for two years) but...

...But we just had the car in the shop for a few days to work on the brakes! Wouldn'tcha think they'd check the brake lights at the same time as they got the brakes working correctly?

Sheesh.

You know they're overbeaten when they start to fall apart again. They start to appear dry, curdled looking and water will usually start to pool in the bottom of the bowl.

I was trying to make a meringue cookie.

So how long would it take? I was doing it for 15 minutes and it never got the peaks. But it certainly wasn't dry.

The eggs were room temp. But perhaps the mixers weren't completely dry.

States I HAVEN'T been to:
Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Washington, S. Dakota, N. Dakota, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Idaho.

Of those, I would most be interested in Hawaii.

States I have LIVED in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, California, Ohio, New York.

Why, I oughta EXCORIATE BK for changing the Word of the Day in the middle of the day before I had a chance to use the previous WOD in a sentence, because I have awakened with a HUMDINGER of a stopped-up nose. I hope that it will not turn out to be a HUMDINGER of a cold, because I have a HUMDINGER of a workload and don't need my body falling apart on me for the next couple of weeks.

Ron what is new about Bush screwing over the people who got him elected? That has always been the case...the people his policies hurt the most have always been the idiots who voted for him. They deserve him when they get when they think that so-called Republican "values" are more important than Health Insurance, Social Security, prescription drugs, job security, a bankrupt government, a declining dollar, a pointless war that has recruited more terrorists than ever before, and more money in your pocket . You can just hear them now "I may cancer and have no insurance to pay my medical bills or for my drugs, but God bless George Bush, at least there'll be no more wardrobe malfunctions on my beloved Superbowl."

Someone was mentioning "Lil Abner" on here. Maybe Charles Pogue. I think that show has an incredible and trenchant score in the service of a pretty weak and dated book.

Question for BK and all: If you could take only the music from one show and create an entirely new book for it, what would it be?

We like to drive to Florida from Long Island (well perhaps LIKE isn't the correct word, it beats the cost of round trip airfare for three and a car rental for two weeks)

So IF that counts, let's see, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, NC, SC, GA and Florida , and I have also been to Texas a few times (Houston in '73 & Dallas in the 80's), spent three days on 1982 with my cousin who lived in Newport Beach CA, she took me to Palm Beach, New port Beach and I went to Knotts Berry Farm on my own, where I met the cowboy who held up the train, and I went to Disneyland with HIM the next day!

Spent a week in Boston, MA, twice, once with my girlfriend and once visiting my bro who worked there for a while

spent 10 GLORIOUS days in Hawaii , one day on Kaui all the rest in Waikki,

I spent a week in AZ, mostly in Tuscon, including a three day stop at the Grand Canyon

my DH worked in Greenbelt MD for about 9 months, so for awhile we spent alternate weekends down there looking around.

Spent a long weeked in DC (ok not a state) during the blizzard of '96 (got snowed in at the Capitol Court Hotel) damn you Newt!! You must send out the snow plows DURING the storm, don't wait until it ends!!

Spent a couple of weeks in Harrisburg PA, when my grandmother lived there. In fact I watched the moon landing with my Nana, on her little black & white set

Spent one day in New Orleans, and a week in Mississippi with my girlfriend who was living there (the New Orleans trip was a daytrip from her house)

I drove through Alabama on the way to Mississippi (I was in Florida first), I sat in a airport in Minneapolis and Chicago a couple of times but that doesn't really count

Oh, and I also spent a week in Illinois when the same friend lived there

Of course I've been to New Jersey numerous times (sometimes by accident) and to Conneticut, when my uncle used to live in Greenwich, and also when they had the Shakespeare festivals in Stratford (when did that theatre close down? That was a wonderful place)

I think that covers it....

It wouldn't be Li'l Abner, which I talk about ALL the time, since it's one of my all-time favorite musicals. I don't find the book dated at all - I find it timely, in fact. I love Panama and Frank and the dialogue in Li'l Abner, if performed by great people, is priceless. I haz spoken!

I would take the music from Smile and do a whole new book that better understood the point of the film.

DRRodzinski, I love LI'L ABNER, both as a comic strip and a show, and I totally disagree with you! I am so looking forward to the DVD release.

GIRL CRAZY could use a new book, but I don't think the score needs tinkering as much as was done to it in CRAZY FOR YOU.

PIPE DREAM could use a new book, but ME AND JULIET could use a new score.

I've been in quite a number of states, when I toured with The Bishop's Comapny doing Do You Know the Milky Way, back in 1966. We went everywhere. States I remember - Arizona, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Wisconson, Detroit, Ohio, Illinois - there are more, just can't remember.

Rodinski you are right about humidity affecting egg whites. It does the same when making whipped cream.

I do not worry about re-washing my bowls or beaters. I might wipe them off if something is noticeable. The most important thing to me is the egg whites need to be at room temperature. I suggest you try it again without the liquid sweetner.

Ghirardelli double chocolate chips are really good in chocolate chip meringue cookies. I leave out the nuts.

Yes, because driving through the state (and stopping at a Denny's or Cracker Barrel (

but that's just my personal opinion) means you've SEEN something of the state. Airports don't count, because all you see is the airport, which is at best looking in at a souvenir shop. Looking at a coffee mug and a sweatshirt just isn't the same thing.

Granulated sugar is a must - not liquid sweetener....it is a granulated chemical reaction that you are looking for. But that has all been discussed already.

Hmmmmmm....nothing in the mail. I was waiting for my humdinger of a Laconte DVD so I could watch INTIMATE STRANGERS....maybe it will come tomorrow.

I was reading in USA TODAY about some changes the director of the show wants to make in the Oscar telecast - with Chris Rock as the host (so it will be "happening" and "now") - he wants ALL nominees onstage when the winner is announced - kind of like Miss America. If this is the case, I think a bathing suit elimination round is also called for!

Answering my own question (which I had to think about after posing it):

I've lived in California and Delaware.

I've traveled through or to: Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Washington DC (which isn't a state but should be or something), Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Florida.

I'd love to travel to Alaska.

Rodzinski, I guess BK set you straight on Li'l Abner. It gets talk about a lot here. BK is the Li'l Abner Freak, but there are many of us who also adore it. Like BK, I don't think the book has dated much at all. I just watched the movie recently (thanks to auspices of BK) and, with Bushie in the White House, I think it has never been more timely and that it's ripe for a first-class revival.

I have been through all of the Southeastern United States, the Southwest, and most of the Midwest. And New York on the Eastern seaboard. Washington(well Seattle) on the Northwest ocean side. I've never been through any of the New England states (nor Maryland), in the midwest I've missed Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas. I've missed all of the Upper West and Great Plains States...I've missed Oregon, Michigan, and Wisconsin. And haven't seen Hawaii or Alasksa...I've probably got half the USA to still see.
