Hi all, I went to POSEIDEN tonight. It was ok, but nothing to write home about, so I'll write here instead.   The effects are very "Titanic"-like and there were times that I squirmed a little as I do in all disaster movies even when I know they will save themselves in the nick of time.

The characters are all different from the original movie, so in that sense I didn't know who would live or die - but it's never that hard to figure out who's expendable and who's going to play hero. Actually there isn't much the same as the original, other than the ship gets hit by a wave on New Year's Eve and tips over. There are a few similarities, but they are the formulaic disaster movie similarities and not really like the movie.

Richard Dreyfus has either really aged or the make-up was very good. I didn't necessarily buy the connection he made with another passenger, but hey, it's a disaster flick.

I wouldn't call it a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it's been a long time since I've seen a good old fashioned disaster flick with a predictible plot, so I enjoyed it.

Watched a varied number of videos and TV material. First I finished GAY PURR-EE. The last 20 minutes of the film are darker in tone than the earlier bits, so the bright splashes of color exhibited earlier aren't in these last minutes. The last part does that that lovely song "Paris Is a Lonely Town."

DR Cillaliz - our paper today described Poseiden as a good "popcorn movie."  Did you have popcorn?

Next, I put in a CSI episode from Season 3, a case involving a man right on the brink of execution by lethal injection who gets a stay while forensic evidence gets reexamined using newer technology. I did enjoy the episode, and while the solution was a bit open ended, I remember that another episode maybe in season 4 or 5 disclosed the actual murderer.

Next up was the widescreen laserdisc of MAME. I just got my hands on a copy of this laserdisc after having a crummy tape recorded off AMC years and years ago.

Warners has said the film needs restoration work they're not prepared to pay for, so there are no current plans for it to be released on DVD. It's an awful movie, I know, but it's a guilty pleasure and may be the only visual version of MAME we'll ever have.

The laser transfer did have a few speckles and some print damage along the right side of the frame for a couple of seconds during "Lovin' You." Otherwise, it looked sharp enough for a laserdisc (except in Lucy's close-ups, of course) and the Technicolor looked very nice. Mono sound.

Then I put in the newly remastered DVD of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. It does look VERY good and they have a Dolby Surround Stereo track that gives the sound some much needed body. I only got about 40 minutes in, but it's probably my favorite of the 70s disaster movies, so I'm enjoying it.

Finished the evening with the LAW & ORDER: CI rerun on NBC. This was one of my favorite cases from this season featuring the murder of a Secret Service agent. Good episode with a surprising murderer.

More sorting this evening, this time a box of craft supplies and fabric.  Much of this is going to the AAUW garage sale next month, along with sets of sheets and towels in kid motifs such as Sesame Street, Mickey Mouse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, 101 Dalmations, and trains.  Don't think DS Rob will mind if I get rid of those items from his childhood, but I'll ask him tomorrow - just in case.

Is there such a thing as a movie without popcorn??? ;D

There still is here in Paris! Goodness gracious!

I went to see Antartica the other day and a young lady, next to me, was taking her bloody time savouring her popcorn, and the smell of popcorn and butter on it is quite a turn off for me!
It makes me want to vomit on the ground; à la BK! Really!
I almost left my seat for another one far away from the popcorn and that girl!
I remember some theater in Montréal were one shoes would almost get glued to the floor if you were to attend the 3rd or 4th showing of the day!
Yuk!

In some places -- not here though -- I know they make more money selling the snacks than tickets to the flicks!
What can I say?.....

AND the munching on popcorn also does get on my nerves!
I'm HERE to watch a movie not to stuff my mouth with fatening food!
And keep your physical pleasure to yourself; thank you for sharing it with me, but no thanks! >:( :D ;D

A refernce is a typo.  The word should have been refinance.

The Marriott Residence Inn was quite a delight.  I shall definitely seek out this sub-chain in the future.

Although if it weren't such a safe area, I'm not sure how I would have felt about being on the ground floor.  But it was a safe area, so the ground floor was just grand.
