I finished SOUTH PACIFIC to begin my evening. It continued to look every bit as spectacular as the first 2/3 of it I had watched. Mr. Chapin and Mr. Allesandrini hold the film in much higher esteem than I do.

Next I put in REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE. I saw the movie for the first time at a revival theater in the late 1970s on a double bill with THE SERGEANT. The print they showed, of course, did not have the golden wash, so this version I saw on DVD tonight was the first time I've ever seen it that way. It does give an eerie, unsettling presence to what is a very strange tale indeed. The movie looked just wonderful in terms of sharpness, and the mono sound was full and rich. I got to within 20 minutes of the end when my friend called to come over to watch THE DIVINCI CODE.

I thoroughly enjoyed THE DA VINCI CODE though my friend did not have the volume up quite loud enough for me. Of course, he had two young children asleep in another part of the house, and I understood the need to keep the volume moderate. Ian McKellan pretty much speaks sedately anyway in the film, so I brought it home with me to watch again at some point over the next week.

I hadn't read this book though I had read ANGELS & DEMONS. My friend had read it and said there was quite a bit missing.

DR td was correct. The transfer looks wonderful. Can't wait to see what it looks like on my equipment.

So tomorrow, I'll finish REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE and get to Friday night's MONK. Then I'll have the rest of the day (until 9 p.m.) to go through some of the other DVDs that have come in the mail this week.

I'm back from MARY POPPINS, which I attended with the recent birthday boy Skip.  I had a great deal of fun, although I think the show's a mess with wonderful moments.  Too long, too many plots, and by the end, too many endings.  The cast is good, and I think Matthew Bourne's choreography the best thing about the show.  The new songs don't do much for me, but the cast is quite wonderful, especially Gavin Lee as Bert, who's an amazibng song and dance man.

Rebecca is beautiful as ever, sings divinely, and she has some wonderful moments, not to mention a figure that makes Edwardian and Victorian fashion poetry in motion.  I believe we saw the same Jane and Michael as before, and the girl playing Jane reminded me a lot of Hayley Mills in POLLYANNA.   Skip and I went backstage, where we met Danny Burstein and his two sons, two visiting friends from San Diego who knew Skip and DR FJL.  I also stopped by Gavin's dressing room to tell him how fantastic he was; I had met him in 1999 when he played the Prince in the BBC-Radio 3 broadcast of my Cole Porter show, JUBILEE.  Rebecca played the Princess in the original 1986 production of the show.  Small world.

Dear Friend BK, I got your message.  I suspect you want Gmajor over E instead of the Gminor over E in the printout I got.   I'll try that tomorrow.

Have you ever consider writing an article for American Cinematography magazine and expressing your views what is wrong with color transfer of older films. Maybe people will see the error of their ways or maybe someone will hire you to do it correctly.
