Hmm, I've never had a NY egg cream. Should I put that on my list of things to do during my next trip?

I love it. It's called an egg cream but has no eggs and no cream in it.

I saw "Children of Men" tonight [last night, now] and have been home for a couple of hours.  It was...interesting.  Has anyone else seen this?  It's about the world of 2027 where no babies have been born since 2009 or so (I think it was a flu pandemic, but they never say why no one is able to conceive after that, unless I missed something) and all illegal immigrants in England (where the movie is set) are rounded up and sent away...or killed.  Anyway, Clive Owen gets contacted by his ex-wife, played by Julianne Moore.  She wants him to ask his cousin (someone in the government) to get papers to get a girl out of the country and she'll pay Clive £5,000 (he really can use the money).  He gets two sets of papers (he's going to escort her, for some reason) and it turns out that the girl is pregnant.  The first pregnancy in the entire world in 18 years!  They have to get her to some people who are part of a group called The Human Project and I guess that they will protect her.  And that's the movie.

I am sure I have either seen or read this plot before.

I just watched Ballet Russes....what a fantastic film!

I am very grateful to whomever brought this documentary to our attention here at HHW. Thank you!!!!!!!

Hmmm...George Zoritch has his own website.

And evidently the trick to looking young even in your late 80s is to have been a ballet dance! I cannot believe how good all of these people looked!

DR MusicGuy - For the audiobook of "Kavalier & Clay", who was the reader?

Frankly, I would like to see it done as a mini-series of sorts, or at least a mega-movie - some five or six hour deal.

IMDB still states a movie is in the making.  Considering the lack of info, I’m not too sure about it.  I too believe it will make a wonderful movie.

Jane - the plot of CHILDREN OF MEN vaguely reminds me of the TV movie THE LAST CHILD, where no family was allowed to have more than one child.  Is it possible that's what you're thinking of?

Earlier, I tried watching PLAY IT AS IT LAYS. Wanted to see the re-teaming of Tuesday Weld and Tony Perkins. Plus Tammy Grimes and direction by Frank Perry. It should have at least been intersting, but it was so downbeat from the word go, I couldn't stick with it

DH Richard and I are back from a visit to his mother, our errands, and a yummy meal at

City Barbecue

in Centerville, OH.  They have about a dozen locations throughout Ohio and are very supportive of the nonprofit sector.  Oh, and the food's good, too!

JRand, probably the funniest part of Kathy Griffin was her recounting her various run-ins at different parties with Lindsay Lohan, who would one time behave like she was a big fan of Kathy, then the next time like she had no idea who Kathy was.

Good afternoon DRs and H/Ks........

I just wanted to pop my head in for a minute to salutate!  (DR Kerry absolutely goes ballistic over the current trend of making verbs out of what are truly only nouns).

As for the TOD -- one of my favorite films of all time is "A Little Romance" with a very young Diane Lane.  Laurence Olivier plays a great old character, and even though he chews the scenery shamelessly I still like him.

I know, it is an American director, but at least a lot of the first part is all shot on location in Paris, and then the story shifts to Italy.

That's all for now folks !

So, Lindsay is still playing identical twins?

Back from our two performances, which went very well indeed.  I'll have complete details, but my only real unhappiness stemmed from ongoing sound problems (with the "live" sound - the prerecorded stuff is all fine) - I just don't understand why we're having these problems - it's six people, six mics, and it's just no good.  We're arriving tomorrow to continue trying to solve it so it's good for our final show.

I added one litte "bit" for our "bear" character, between the first and second show, and it got a nice laugh.  And we learned that the applause and screaming is so loud and sustained after the penultimate song that our twin DJs closing dialogue will never be heard - so we cut it and I've figured out a way to have the entire cast shout out "See you next time!" and then go right into our reprise of the opening number.  It should work much better.

I have to attend an opening night tonight.  I finally got my clothes back from the dry cleaners so I should look okay.  I'm going to have a quick supper at Genghis Cohen with Miss Patti and her mother.

Der Brucer wants fish and chips.  He showed up at work - well, just a little after work, while I was dinner shopping - with a recipe in hand.

So I'll be making fish and chips tonight.

I did insist on getting a deep-fry thermometer.  The business of using a chopstick to determine if the oil for frying is hot enough got old.  (So did the chopsticks, but that's another story.)

Now, here's a question for all - why do we pronounce the word thermometer as ther-MOM-eter?  Given that it is two words portmanteaued together, shouldn't it be THER-mo-ME-ter?  It isn't used to measure a mom, well, not usually.  I don't think I'd want to stick anyone's mom in a pot of hot oil.

After eight years of trying, I have finally got the extremely elusive and OOP CD of The Sandpiper.  I have no idea why I didn't get it when it was released in 1996, since I got the other two soundtracks that were released at the same time on the same label - it's inconceivable that I would have missed it, but I somehow did and it went out of print within months.  Now, it's a very pricey item indeed, but I lucked out and got it - FINALLY!  We do love our Johnny Mandel soundtracks.

Rather than the usaul suspects, here a list of French films I have enjoyed recently:
Strange Gardens
8 Women
Nelly & Monsieur Arnau
Les Miserables (The Jean-Paul Belmondo version)
Train Of Life
Etre et Avoir (Documentary)

Wow!  You mean they did LE MIZ in France, too?

Yep! But Jean-Paul Belmondo's singing being lousy, they removed all the songs! ;)

I've just read an interview of Mr Patrice Leconte in which he states he's going to direct 3 more films and retire; he's then to fulfill "two or three dreams", like direct an operetta at the Opéra-Comique and travel by car with his wife from Chicago to Los Angeles via route 66, "l'esprit libre et le téléphone portable éteint!"
