Last night I went to a gathering of Turner people. The occasion was that the woman who schedules sessions quit to pursue her dreams of making documentaries (I have been a bad influence on her!) so I got to have a pre-birthday party with a lot of people without telling them it was my birthday!

I ran into an editor I hadn't seen in years. I almost didn't recognize her---she looked much older and very drawn. She told me that in the past year, she and her husband separated, her father died, she was robbed at gunpoint and had a bad car wreck. And then she went to work at Turner full-time so she could have a regular income and benefits for her son. She was a free-lancer for many years and it was tough for her to move into a coprporate environment. She was happy I was able to stay out of house.

Of course, the "bombs" were quite the topic of discussion...they had been up in many cities for weeks and nobody had thought much of it.

I have been working all week at a new post place belonging to an editor who left the place I usually work and started his own compnay, taking with him a very young, talented editor that I adore. He tried to get the CLOSER work, and the old place was working hard to keep it there, so I was sort of caught in the middle. I knew the editors didn't want to be in-house so I just fed everybody as much info as I could about why we would be better off out of house, and then let them make their own deals. Last night I got to see the folks from the old house and they were very excited about "getting the band back together" and were thanking me profusely for tipping them off about the CLOSER leaving so they could present a good case to keep it there.

The owner of the new place overheard some of this. He has the place where I'm doing the work on The Brain. Awkward! But I think they all know that I wasn't playing favorites. If the CLOSER left the old place, it could possibly have driven them out of business.

Then DH and I escaped and took one of the young producers with us to a restaurant she liked down the street. I had the best hamburger I've ever had in Atlanta, complete with "aoli mayo". She's one of the few people I know who can talk about birds and plants (she says the same) so we had a "field day" talking about the new birds we've seen at the new house.

I was very jealous that she had seen a ROSEATE spoonbill recently. That's one of my favorites!

The heated mouse is a good idea. Some of these editing rooms are very cold and I'm usually sitting on my hands to warm them up when I'm not editing. I have some wool gloves with no fingertips but they're too bulky for that kind of work.

However, if I was working at the computer warming my hand in my pants, I think that would be a little unseemly!

TOD: The Zoo Story. I haven't seen very many one acts, but this was the first one I saw, in high school. We didn't have a drama club; these two guys just decided on their own to work it up. I was really impressed by it!

This reminds me of being in rural France and seeing guys on scooters weighed down with dozens of baguettes, making their deliveries. They looked like anys staggering under the weight of a giant crumb.

I also enjoy The Zoo Story very much.

There is also a collection of one-acts by Mr David Ives titled All In The Timing that is terrific. My favorites in that evening include:

WORDS WORDS WORDS - Monkeys with typewriters in a laboratory.
ALL IN THE TIMING - a couple on a date try to get it right
UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE - By the end of the play you can understand a brand new language....

They've been my main client for many years (I helped with the launch) and are the network that airs THE CLOSER. When we rebranded it as the drama network, the programming changed quite a bit. Before that, it was a place for Turner to show all the libraries they acquired (Warner Brothers, Hanna Barbara, etc.) until they started the Cartoon Network and TCM and lots of random TV shows they had acquired.
