Children's Book Stirs Battle With Single Word

(Feb. 18) -- The word “scrotum” does not often appear in polite conversation. Or children’s literature, for that matter.

Yet there it is on the first page of “The Higher Power of Lucky,” by Susan Patron, this year’s winner of the Newbery Medal, the most prestigious award in children’s literature. The book’s heroine, a scrappy 10-year-old orphan named Lucky Trimble, hears the word through a hole in a wall when another character says he saw a rattlesnake bite his dog, Roy, on the scrotum.

“Scrotum sounded to Lucky like something green that comes up when you have the flu and cough too much,” the book continues. “It sounded medical and secret, but also important.”

The inclusion of the word has shocked some school librarians, who have pledged to ban the book from elementary schools, and reopened the debate over what constitutes acceptable content in children’s books. The controversy was first reported by Publishers Weekly, a trade magazine.

Toilets in one London prison are getting a face-lift — or rather, a change in direction — to accommodate Muslim inmates who can't use them while facing Mecca, a British newspaper reported.

Government officials ackowledged using tax dollars for the changes to the facilities, but maintained that moving the toilets was part of "on-going refurbishment," according to an article in The Sun.

Islamic code prohibits Muslims from facing or turning their backs on the direction of prayer when they use the bathroom. Muslim prisoners complained of having to sit sideways on toilets so as to not break code.

Good morning, all! Randy, JoAnn and I are all fighting colds now, so I guess the pressure last week has exhausted us enough to come down with something. I'm taking Airborne and Emergen-C (?), and continuing to work on the projects I have here. Today is a Toyland day.

I think later in the afternoon, we may go over to dad's house, and go through it for whatever items we think might go well into Matt's new house or for anything missed last year when dad asked us to clean it out.

I was entering the information for The Brain From Planet X into the ITunes Data base and came up with one song short! I was taking the information from the listing inside the booklet and discovered that one song was missing. It was The Will-Bent News. It is on the back cover of the cd but missing from the booklet.

Anyway it is uploaded to their database so when the cd is popped in and played on the ITunes program it should all be there.

Today is going to be a long day. After church we have a a potluck dinner and an afternoon program scheduled. During the service, I will be in the fellowship hall moving walls and tables to transform the building from Sunday School rooms to a large dining room. Luckily I will have a strong man to help me. Joey is six.

I will start with a few:

Barbara Stanwyck reveals to Clifton Webb that he is NOT the father of their son in TITANIC (1953).

Clark Gable sits up after Vivian Leigh throws the knickknack in GONE WITH THE WIND.

Discovery of Mother in PSYCHO - and many other moments in that film.

Well, I will tell you one piece of Macbeth gossip that has this household amused. Lady M is notorious for paying bills and gift checks late. I don't know if she thinks it's a hoot to be able to add to birthday and Christmas checks "late fee" or if she's plumb irresponsible. I'm sure that if my brother knew how much money she costs the family business in late fees, he wouldn't be so tolerant of her generally crappy behavior.

Yesterday morning, because they live in the country, they ran out of propane gas, either through her not paying a bill on time or not keeping an eye on the monitor. At any rate, the Macbeths have had two days with no heat because of her.

All I can think of is that moment in WAIT UNTIL DARK near the end of the movie when Audrey Hepburn is totally in the dark and the killer lunges.
