My favorite song in I DO! I DO! (of which there are many because I think it's one of the great, unheralded musicals of the 1960s) is "What Is a Woman?"

I've had a full afternoon of viewing. I began by finishing RENO 911! which I had begun last night. Some typical foolishness, very easy to take and enjoy.

Next, I watched TWO AND A HALF MEN. Ordinarily, this show is not my cup of tea, but there was a gay-themed storyline last night, so I tuned in. Typical gay panic among the boys when they meet a man married 16 years who realized his same sex orientation.

There are so many sexual jokes thrown around on this show, it seems like 80% of the dialog veers in that direction. I'm not a regular viewer, but I'd think this would get old season after season.

SUnday night's ENTOURAGE had the nice version of Ari having a meldtdown because he wanted to fire someone and couldn't summon up the meannness to do it. Funny stuff with another totally winning performance by Jeremy Piven. It wouldn't surprise me a bit for him to win his second Emmy this year for this role.

I spent the majority of the afternoon, however, watching the 1979 Japanese film VENGEANCE IS MINE. I had never seen it before, and yet its storyline could have been an American one: a charming ne'er-do-well lies, cheats, swindles, and finally commits murder for no good reason except he's angry with the world and does things his way. There are five people killed during the film, three on camera in very brutal fashion (think the necktie strangling in FRENZY or the brutal killing of the man in TORN CURTAIN - all in-your-face murders) and the two others are revealed in cold blooded fashion that were just as disturbing. At over two hours, it's a long road to not much revelation about the killer's psyche, but that didn't make it any less absorbing.

I also watched the few special features that were on this upcoming Criterion disc: an interview with director Shohei Imamura and two trailers that were very effective in presenting some of the horrors of this smiling psychopath.

Dilemma of the Day:

WORD PURGENigger : An Autobiography by Dick Gregory

The Nigger Of The Narcissus by Joseph Conrad

The Bitch is Back - Elton John

Ho-Ho Basket at AMAZON

And one of these:

Do we put a muzzle on Santa?

der Brucer

I guess Ann Coulter and Isiah Washington are still free to use the "F" word!

And what about the California byword...."bitchin'"?

And I'm certain many DRs here would be amazed, if not shocked, to learn that the original title of Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians" is "Ten Little Niggers"....the latter word being a Raj word for Indian.

I still have Sunday's THE SOPRANOS and last night's CSI: MIAMI on the DVR to watch. I also recorded MY GAL SAL off TCM which I'd like to watch at some point. Don't know when that will be, however. Looks like a full week of DVD viewing.

So am I, DR Edi!  Those of us in the middle - you, me, DRs JRand, Cillaliz, CharlesPogue, jhvw (anyone else?) should meet somewhere for dinner tonight - how about St. Louis?  Might be a stretch for DR DakotaCelt, though...

Hmm...  If DR der Brucer were posting in dual identities here at HHW, what other DR could he be?

Hmm...

 ;)

It would be his polar opposite........you, perhaps?

-I just hope we start as close to "on time" tonight as possible.  Last Thursday, due to seating issues and special introductions during the curtain speech, we did not start the show until 8:16 - which meant we did not come down until 8:29.  That made for some frantic cab rides to the train station apparently.

Show started at 8:16 and didn't go down until 8:29?  These damned talky shows drive me crazy!!  ;D

Still proofing, but have also shipped a big order (store) and picked up a package.  I may take a break now and watch some more of the motion picture Freud.  I've got Freud in the living room DVD player and Lost Horizon (the musical) in the bedroom DVD player - can we say it's so schizo?  Does anyone have the running time of the uncut version of the musical?  Years ago, it was "restored" for laserdisc, but the person who "restored" it is notorious for putting back pieces that were never there - i.e. trims, things that were never in any release version, etc.  For 1776, he "created" an overture that never existed and was never MEANT to exist.  I have the laser but I can't get to it at the moment.  So, if someone has that info that would be great.

Five DVDs in today's mail!

Five (count 'em 5)!

"Les Miserables' (twofer with 1935 and 1952 versions)
"Jane Eyre" (Welles/Fontaine)
"The Queen" (Helen Mirren)
"Sailor of the King" (Jeffrey Hunter/Michael Rennie)
"Action" (all 13 episodes of the acclaimed, yet cancelled, Fox TV series about the wacky banalities of Hollywood).

"Action" (all 13 episodes of the acclaimed, yet cancelled, Fox TV series about the wacky banalities of Hollywood).

This is one of my favorite TV comedies. I'll never forget Jay Mohr, playing an insidious movie producer, telling Scott Wolf to "Go back to Party of Five Foot Two."

I've not heard of this one, but I'm a Menken fan.

It's a bit scarce, but I recommend it to Menken fans. I can't say I enjoy it quite as much as Beauty and the Beast or Little Shop of Horrors, but it belongs in any Menken fan's collection. There are at least a couple of really outstanding songs on it. And it stars Ellen Greene from Little Shop!

The longest running time I can find for Lost Horizon (the musical) is 151 minutes (referenced in Vincent Canby's NY Times review).

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers.

TOD: We had AOL for a very brief time. They had so much stuff there on AOL that I didn't know from "the internet." We didn't venture outside of AOL until I was banned for life and got another internet provider. But I think that DR Sandra found Playbill.

Banned for life! Good grief, DR Laura, even I'm not that kinky![/i]
