short article about puns

Quote
When it comes to puns, not everyone is laughing. Puns -- words or phrases deliberately confused for rhetorical effect -- may be an endangered species, as changes in comedy have writers panning puns.

"Puns worked when most humor was written," says Andrew Smith, a comedy writer who used to write for Saturday Night Live. "Puns have gone out of favor because they work for the page, not for the stage."

I'm very glad that the Speke's gazelles, as well as the other animals at the LA Zoo, appear to be safe.

I would not listen to a writer from Saturday Night Live (former or not) as an expert on what was funny - or not.

Yes, sir.  Would you care for John Wilkes, Edwin or Shirley?

I would write a ditty about Mt. Etna, but what rhymes with Etna?

My presentation is this morning so I shan't be around much. I'm heading downstairs to make sure everything is in working order, unlike my silly colleague who did Part One of the presentation yesterday. He does it every year and he never seems to learn. He doesn't use Power Point (not that he has to, God knows people overuse PP) and the handouts are ridiculous. They are even more ridiculous when he begins to photocopy them 20 minutes before his presentation and then runs into problems with the copy machine and doesn't have a staple remover and he's late for his own seminar! Thankfully, we don't present together. He comes off looking unprepared and unprofessional so my time this morning looks fresh and together. Am I bragging? Maybe a bit, but I'm also happy that he shoots himself in the foot like this become some people in this organization seem to be blinded by his "charm" and I use the word with caution, feeling he is quirky and adds new elements to a presentation. If you call hemming and hawing and participants looking at their watches new elements, far be it from me to complain.

On that note, I'm outta here for a while.

Later, gaters.

Presentation Vibes to DR Ben~~~~~~~~~ I'm sure you'll be fresh, together, interesting and fun...

Michael Stewart's lyrics in BARNUM (not to be conufsed with Mike Barnum) had two rhymes for Etna.  Hope it's Ok to quote the lyric here since it's for educational purposes:

Quite a lotta
Roman terra cotta
Livin' lava from the flanks of Etna
Statuary
Ride a dromedary
See the Temple tumble and the Red Sea part.

McNamara's band
The fattest lady in the land
A pickled prehistoric hand
A strand of Pocahontas' hair
Crow and Sioux
Who're going to
Be showing you
Some rowing through
A model of the rapids on the Delaware.

Armadillas
Clever caterpillas
Reproductions of the Cyclops' ret'na
Crystal blowing
Automatic sewing
Venus on a shell and other works of art.

Educated fleas
A tribe of Aborigines
Two ladies joined across the knees
A Mona Lisa made of ice
Hottentots
We've gotten in
Forgotten spots
A cotton gin
A night with Lot in Sodom
Better see that twice!

One iguana
Snakes and other fauna
Got no bearded lady but we're get'na
When you duck out
Take another buck out
Run around the block And see a
Run around the block and see a
Run around the block and see a
new show start.

Thank you for reminding me of that song, DR FJL.  It's actually one of my favorites.

Good morning, all!  I had a constant nightmare last night: I was back at The Drama Book Shop dealing with returning defective scripts and vocal books to Dramatists Play Service and Samuel French.  I was back in my old cubicle surrounded by shipping problems and sorting tons of those flimsy scripts!  Oh, God, don't tell me I'll be returning to that hell!

Today, I've got a tiny project keeping me around the apartment, then a visit with my Mac Man to do some computer adjustments.  After that, I head off to Encores! to see their new extravaganza.

Today is going to be great. Unless I get called at the last minute, which has already happened once this week, I don't have court and this afternoon  the rest of the office staff will be on their way to Des Moines.  This is going to be a nice day.

This reminds me of the dreams I used to have of being the Judge's secretary (she quit with no notice when I was his law clerk, so I had to fill in until she was replaced).   I had dreams of being buried in paperwork I didn't know what do to with and I couldn't breathe.

I am not the dream interpreter, but I think they are just stress dreams, DR Elmore.  I think you should try to relax, have fun and be glad that the Drama Book Shop is not your problem!

A couple of people mentioned that Games is a redo of Diabolique. I don't think so. I vaguely remember the plot and I don't it is a remake. Perhaps similar in style.

Perhaps people are thinking about Reflections of Murder that was made in 1974 with Tuesday Weld, Sam Waterson and Joan Hackett

or
House of Secrets with Melissa Gilbert, Kate Vernon and Bruce Boxlinter in 1993.

The reason why I don't think Games is a remake.......
SPOILER BELOW

James Caan dies and Simone Signoret leaves alone at the end with lots of money (if memory serves)

Puns work for the page. Hmm. I thought buns worked for the page - or was it the Congressman worked the page's buns - I get so confused....
