Saturday morning greetings!  Today's the first Sat. I've worked since July 14 and I've not missed it a bit.  A class from a local graduate school is coming in this morning for grants research training, so I'll be E & T until lunchtime.

Birthday greetings to the father of DR Tomovoz!

FJL said yesterday:
Additional trivia bit:  Rebecca Luker met Danny Burstein while they were both appearing in Skip's show Time and Again at the Old Globe in San Diego.

Question: Was she still with Gregory Jbara at the time or had they split?

The marriage was over by the time we recorded the Cole Porter album.

Hi DR GINNY.....

Hi DR JRand ~ No "Hi" to me and DR ELmo -- I'd use the chopped liver reference but I think it's already been used on this site before ...

Good morning, all!  I'm off to Toyland today, then to the Post Office, and later tonight, to BUKOWSICAL.  I haven't heard from my friend Matthew, so I hope he's still on tonight's schedule with me.

I have no other news.

My first memory of a standing ovation was for Carol Channing in the Houston Grand Opera Tour of HELLO DOLLY! with Alix Korey, Florence Lacey, and Leroy Reams, 1978, or so.  Of course, we now know that Ms Channing's ex-husband was the instigator for all those ovations, but I must say, I saw every performance as an usher in Cincinnati and she deserved them.

Me too! I'd trade my horse and dog for him!

Did you tie him up and brand him, too?

(By chance, does he have hair of red, and eyes of blue?)

You know what, I think I'm going to book a flight to NYC in September and go see that new musical The Brain From Planet X at the Acorn. I hear it's ever so much fun.

Great idea!  We need to get T-shirts for all the HHWers to wear around the NYMF

"I'm A Brainiac"  and then on the back The Brain From Planet X with the dates, time and location

Good morning!

It was so hot here during the night that every time I woke up during the night, I was aware that my central A/C was running, something that rarely happens during the night and early morning hours.

They're predicting another near-100 day today after the last three have been 102, 104, and 104 respectively.

I hate summer.

My first memory of a spontaneous standing ovation was during MY FAIR LADY which I saw on Broadway in 1958. My memory is hazy about which number occasioned it, but if I had to bet, I'd say it was "Get Me to the Church on Time." I remember it happened because I turned to my uncle and said, "I can't see anything any more." He answered, "They'll sit down in a minute."

As for movies getting applause, it wasn't common in my little town growing up, but I can remember being in NYC and being surprised how much applause THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT generated. Not just at the numbers, but when audience favorites would come on the screen, there was just this HUGE ovation. Both of Garland's segements (the Rooney/Garland sequence and Garland's solo sequence) got heavy applause throughout.

I especially enjoyed the sequence from the MGM 25th Anniversary lunch as the camera panned across the array of stars while they were eating. Some folks generated no recognition, and others like Angela Lansbury and Katharine Hepburn got HUGE ovations.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for HOT FUZZ to arrive today. I have other things I can watch, but I'd love to see it either tonight or tomorrow afternoon.

I'll probably watch or record the next MASTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION episode tonight on ABC. This one did not get good reviews, but since the show only has three more episodes (including tonight's), I'll stick with it.

I'll be back in a bit. Last weekend was tax-free weekend in NC, and I bought a reasonably cheap desktop computer to use as a back-up. It has Windows Vista on it, so I want to set the computer up and see if I can make heads or tails of the new operating system. If I like it, I may swap it out for the computer I'm using now.

Fingers crossed for an easy set-up.
